Police in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, have arrested three people, including a medical doctor (names withheld), for alleged child trafficking. Daily Sun gathered that the medical doctor. based in Abayi in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of the state, and two others, Nzekwe and Ogechi, were arrested following the disappearance of a baby boy delivered at the doctozr’s hospital. A police source revealed that one Peace Pius, an itinerant pregnant trader of 63 Rivers Road, Warri, Delta State, who was abducted while on transit to Aba, was made unconscious and kept in the custody of Nzekwe in conspiracy with Ogechi. The two suspects were later said to have taken their victim to the doctor’s hospital where a caesarean operation was performed on her and her baby removed. However, when Peace regained consciousness in the hospital, she was reported to have demanded to see her baby but was told the baby was dead. Peace, who did not believe what the doctor told her, went to some of the nurses who were around when she was delivered of the baby but were oblivious of what the doctor had earlier told her, who informed the woman her baby was alive. It was then that Peace reported the matter to the police and in a swift operation by a team of crack detectives led by Anari Anari, the medical doctor and the other two suspects were arrested. During interrogation, police were said to have discovered that Peace was hypnotised before being taken to the hospital where she was successfully delivered of a baby boy but that the suspects sold the boy to a woman when the mother was still unconscious. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abia State Command, Onyeke Ezekiel, confirmed the incident. Ezekiel said the suspects had taken the police to the woman who bought the baby but that she was on the run. BANGKOK—Two Nigerian men, suspected of being part of a drug smuggling ring, were arrested, yesterday, with 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ‘ice,’ valued at an estimated Bt1 million (about $33,300) in eastern Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng area, according to narcotics suppression police. Identified as Ahamefule Cosmos and Iriegbe Chinonso, the two Nigerian nationals were detained at a convenience store near Ramkhamhaeng Soi 24. Police took them to their apartment for further investigation and found 28 packages of crystal meth, weighing in total 500 grams valued at $33,300. The arrest followed the arrest of Thai national Polsingha Putthasri, who held 100 grams of ‘ice,’ saying he bought the illegal drug from a Nigerian drug syndicate. According to the initial investigation, the detainees claimed that their friend smuggled the drug for them to sell it to party-goers and tourists in Bangkok’s Ratchada and Nana areas. A Magistrates’ Court on Thursday granted bail to two accused persons, Chima Oforkasi and Chigozie Nnamatu, both of Gishiri village, Abuja, charged with alleged conspiracy and theft. Police prosecutor Buba Irimiya,told the court that on Oct. 15, one Julius Amogun, of the same address, reported the case to the Mabushi Police Station. Irimiya said that the accused persons formed a common intention and allegedly stole the complainant’s television set and Nokia phone, valued at N21,500, and N5,000 cash. The prosecutor said that during interrogation, the accused persons confessed to the crime which contravened the provision of sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges wereread to them. The magistrate, Mr Musa Jobbo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100,000 each and a surety each in like sum. Jobbo said that the sureties must be resident at a fixed and verifiable address within the jurisdiction of the court. He adjourned the case till Nov. 5, for hearing.
