PoliticsFG Completes 37 Dams, Rehabilitates 10 (Old News) by Osode(op): 2:02pm On Jan 03, 2015
WorldStage Newsonline-- Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it has completed the construction of 37 large dams, rehabilitated 10 while 149 are under construction across the country.

The Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe in a statement said that the ministry engaged in the construction, operation and maintenance of dams nationwide to impound raw water for potable water supply, hydropower, irrigation, fishery development, flood control, tourism and recreation.

“The Ministry, in the last four years completed 37 large dams of various sizes, rehabilitated 10 dams, while the construction works on 149 dams of various capacities are on-going across the country,” the statement said.

The Minister said out of the 37 completed dams, 16 were with hydropower potentials capable of generating 135.15 Megawatts of electricity.

Ochekpe said that when the construction of all the dams are completed, the water impounded in the nation’s dams would be increased by 3.6 billion cubic meters

Ochekpe further said that some existing dams including the breached Goronyo Dam emergency spillway in Sokoto, Alau Dam in Borno, Tiga and Chalawa Gorge dams in Kano, Hadejia Barrage in Hadejia as well as other dams in many states have been rehabilitated for more optimal operation.

Speaking on Kashimbila multipurpose dam, the Minister said that the dam was intended to control likely flood from the imminent collapse of lake Nyos upstream in Cameroon and it had recorded 87 per cent completion status.

She added that the procurement of the works on the proposed Datsin Hausa Dam that would address the issues of flooding as a result of uncontrolled releases of water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon is currently under review.

PoliticsInterview-nigeria Sees Cocoa Export Revenues Up 45 Pct In 2 Years (CNBC) by Osode(op): 1:37pm On Jan 03, 2015
* Cocoa output on track to hit 370,000 tonnes this year

* Revenues up to $1.3 bln, against $900 mln in 2012

* Nigeria seeking to cut dependence on oil through farming

(Adds details, background, quotes)

ABUJA, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Nigeria expects to earn $1.3 billion from cocoa exports this year, an increase of 45 percent on two years ago, after a steady rise in output that could help shift Africa's top economy away from its reliance on oil, its agriculture minister told Reuters.

Akinwumi Adesina, speaking on the sidelines of a cocoa summit in Nigeria's capital Abuja late on Monday, said the world's fourth biggest cocoa producer was set to produce 370,000 tonnes this year from its 14 major producing areas, up from the 250,000 tonnes that earned it $900 million in 2012.

Last year production was up to 300,000 tonnes, Adesina said.

"If we don't diversify the economy, we are exposed to shocks. The bulk of our export earnings come from crude oil but we are mindful as a government that this is not a sustainable pathway," Adesina said.

"Today agriculture is the largest contributor to the non-oil sector and the key components of that is ... cocoa."

Nigeria government revenues fell 16.5 percent month-on-month to 502.09 billion naira ($3.03 billion) in September on a fall in global oil prices and outages caused by oil theft. Benchmark Brent crude has fallen more than 25 percent since June.

"We want to replace oil within the next 5-8 years ... so that we can buffer ourselves against ... global commodity price shocks," Adesina said.

That is an ambitious task. Oil revenues currently make up 95 percent of foreign exchange earnings. Nigeria earns roughly $50 billion a year from oil exports, almost 40 times what it earns from cocoa.

Adesina said Nigeria was working on agricultural commodities, including cocoa, sugar, oil palm, and cassava, to help plug shortfalls from oil revenues.

Cocoa was one of the first victim's of Nigeria's discovery of oil in the 1950s, which led to the gradual abandonment of other economic sectors.

High unemployment and poverty levels among Nigeria's 170 million people have prompted authorities to look again at the labour-intensive cocoa industry, with the aim of getting more people to grow a product for which prices have been rising to a 40-year high in the past two months.

Adesina said the government aimed to produce half a million tonnes of cocoa next year and 600,000 tonnes by 2016, as a new hybrid variety given out to farmers improves yields. Europe is the main buyer. The long-term aim was to produce a million tonnes a year, just shy of top grower Ivory Coast.

Adesina said Nigeria's cocoa revenues hit $900 million two years ago, rising to $1.2 billion last year, on increasing global cocoa prices and domestic production. Cocoa accounted for 9 percent of Nigeria's $12.9 billion total non-oil revenues in 2013.

He also said that the government was working on a cocoa board in conjunction with the private sector which would help accelerate growth in production, noting that a board helped Ghana double its output to 700,000 tons in the past 10-years.

Adesina said the European Union was supporting Nigeria with around 12 million euros to develop a standards laboratory.

AgricultureFG Crashes Fish Prices To Affordable Levels by Osode(op): 12:56pm On Jan 03, 2015
Millions of fish consumersare heaving a sigh of relief as fresh import quotas for fish issued by the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has brought down prices acrossthe country.

For instance, Herring prices have come down from N7, 600 to N4, 000per carton. In the case of Horse Mackerel, the price came down to N5, 800 from more than N9, 500 per carton. The Titusspecies is being sold in the marketfor N6, 800, down from a level of N10, 200 per carton. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) figures, Nigeria currently has a shortage of 2.6million tons of fish. While the global average of fish consumption is18.7 kilogrammes per person, Nigerian per capita consumption of fish is only 11.2 kilogrammes.

Nigerian fish supply consistsof 600,000 metric tons of local production and the balance is mainly covered by importsof frozen fish. Frozen fish are caughtin high seas by trawlers in Asia, Europe and Russian the major markets from where Nigeria imports fish. Nigerian domestic production consists predominantly of farmed fish, mainly catfish. The varietiesof frozen fish that Nigeria imports are not available in Nigerian coastal waters. Besides, Nigerian trawling industry has been seriously affected by oil spillage, piracy and non-sustainable fishing practices.

“The impact of any major reduction in imports would only mean that catfish will be the onlyvarietyof fish available in Nigeria”, a fishery expert, Solomon Anichebe had said. He hasopined that Nigerians have gotten used to varieties of imported frozen fish over the past decadesincluding Herring or Shawa, and Sardine which are popular in the North, Horse Mackerel (Kote), Sardinella (Agbodu), and Mackerel which are staples in the East and Blue Whiting(Panla) which are favourites in the Western region of Nigeria. Only the catfish has become accustomed to breeding in Nigeria, he says.

PoliticsRe: US Warns Its Citizens Ahead Of Gej's Declaration by Osode:
Collynzo22:
Ahead of President Jonathan’s declaration to
contest the 2015 Presidential elections tomorrow, the US embassy in Nigeria has issued a warning to its citizens visiting or residing in Nigeria to be security conscious and stay away from public places. The message on its website (nigeria.usembassy.gov) reads thus: President
Goodluck Jonathan is expected to announce his candidacy for re-election on November 11 at 10 am in Eagle Square, Abuja. Heavy traffic in and arou eagle Square is expected. We also expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security,
and possible road blocks. The U.S. Mission suggests
you avoid this area. The Mission would also like to remind all U.S.
citizens to review and ensure they practice the
following security precautions: In Public Areas Always be aware of your general surroundings
and try to avoid large crowds, especially political
marches, gatherings, and demonstrations. When in crowded public areas, remain vigilant for
signs of trouble. Before entering any establishment,
scan the area for suspicious activity to avoid
walking into a robbery in progress or other
trouble. Remember where the nearest fire exits and
other avenues of escape are located. If you hear shots fired, immediately get down on the ground.
Do not try to investigate or intervene. While Driving Due to increased security and heavy traffic delays,
the U.S. Mission expects a higher potential for traffic
accidents, roadblocks, and other street crime.
Traffic along Shehu Shagari Way, Ahmadu Bello
Way, Constitution Avenue, and Independence
Avenue often becomes completely stopped or blocked. U.S. citizens should alter their routes to
avoid these areas. Do not leave anything visible inside your vehicle
that might tempt someone, including purses,
backpacks, briefcases, laptops, cellular telephones,
and other electronic items. Store these items in the
trunk or under the seat. Keep windows up and
doors locked. Car-jackers target moving vehicles but thieves also frequent parking areas looking for
anything in plain sight worth taking. Remain alert while driving, especially when
stopped at traffic intersections and highway off-
ramps. Keep an eye on pedestrians and other
drivers around you. Leave at least half a car length
of space between you and the car in front of you in
case it becomes necessary to take evasive action. When leaving a public area, such as a shopping
area, restaurant, or airport, check your rearview
mirrors for any vehicles that may be following you.
If you feel you are being followed or notice
suspicious persons or vehicles near your vehicle
entrance, do not enter your property. Go to a safe area (such as a police station or the Embassy/
Consulate General/Guest Quarters, and so forth)
and call the Embassy or Consulate General.
On-Going Security Threat The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor closely the
ongoing threat posed by a Nigerian extremist
group and their intentions to carry out attacks
against the Nigerian Government and western
interests in Nigeria. U.S. citizens should continue to exercise caution.
Please maintain a high state of vigilance and
personal awareness, particularly in and around
Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, near Nigerian
government facilities, diplomatic missions, large
gathering places, hotels, markets and malls, and places of worship. Please be advised that Nigerian police and military
units may establish additional police checkpoints,
security, and road blocks in Abuja. If you are confronted by an armed individual Immediate compliance is suggested, avoid making
sudden movements, and do not offer up any form
of resistance. Any hesitation on your part could be
perceived as a threat, which may result in
unnecessary violence. We recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or
residing in Nigeria enroll in the Department of
State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
STEP enrollment gives you the latest security
updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or
nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have internet access,
enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or
Consulate.

RomanceRe: Should A Lady Cook For The Guy She's Dating? by Osode: 8:04am On Nov 01, 2014
mitchyy:
Interesting thread. Yes, a lady can cook for her boyfriend. But then, its not compulsory she does that all the time. A man who has brain upstairs and understands that his girl is not his maid will not insist she does.

I'll use the example of a male friend who is happily with a kid now. He was dating one lady who ensures there's always soup and stew in his fridge. She cooks and clean. She was like the perfect wife. But when this guy was ready to marry, he went to search for a random lady in his church, they dated for 3months and he married her.
Mrs cook and clean was very pissed because she gave him everything yet he left her for someone he never knew. So to those saying its a criteria for a guy to marry you, think again.
Another example, a friend told us he needed a wife and wants to settle down this November. We tried to hook him up and finally, he found a lady he liked. They are currently dating and she visits almost everyday to cook, clean, do his laundry. Sometimes they spend the night together. This is November and he hasn't even engaged her. We asked him what happened to "I want to marry asap". And he said he still wants to watch his girl. But we asked him to be honest, becus we know its because she gives him everything he would have gotten when married. So he sees no need to rush. And then he smiled sheepishly.

In a nutshell, cooking for your boyfriend or fiancee is awesome. But making it mandatory for ladies, is archaic. And its NEVER a criteria for him to marry you.
Balanced, and Matured...

Tymax: Real women don't provoke their husbands to anger.

A sensible woman doesn't seek to be the object of her husband's rage.

A cantankerous woman should have the presence of mind not to marry a quick-tempered man.
I am impressed that the younger men of the new generation are also becoming 'liberated' men like the women. And are equaly begining to demand certain things that my generation would or have foolishly conceaded/overlooked to our women as 'Rights' in the newly emerging relationship with their own women.
On the topic, I Propose that if women want laws that criminalise hitting them under any circumstance then men should demand (AND ENFORCE) laws that criminalise 'verbal and emotional' abuse (that women of all generations 'Indulge' in ...including my beloved mother), That men, of all generations have always had to bear, concead to, and contend with.
In this new Dynamic; all a carefull young man has to do is 'Record' the offending woman (by some means) indulging in their favourite 'past time' and get it to law enforcement and she would get six months in prison (or what ever penalty a man would get the said Bill). I can almost hear all the men on NL laughing, ... Because Instead of the men, (as it would be now), It is most women that would hardly spend six months in a year out of Prison. I so trust the Man; If he needs to, he can be 'Deadly Cool' and calculating (because its Part of his Assignment on earth) ...Its his natural 'design'.

Am I to assume you totaly missed the Oscar Pistorius trial. (where the prosecution 'desparately' sought after slight evidences of ficticious quarrels and disagreements btwn the couple on social media?). Oscar was just lucky they had nothing of such online to realy nail him.And this was someone 'favoured'. Not to talk of what this one posted..
Anyway as I've already said 'enjoy your chata'
