Amnesty International Nigeria has called on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the Federal Capital Development Authority to halt planned demolition work at Plot 5334 in Maitama, Abuja, until concerns over the site’s reported drainage function, land allocation and ongoing legal processes are independently reviewed. The organisation warns that disturbing the site could obstruct stormwater flows and increase flood risks.
Amnesty says the plot is designated as a public utility corridor and reportedly contains underground stormwater and sewage infrastructure built between 2012 and 2014. It is raising concern over the reported allocation of the land for private real-estate development, and says an FCDA inspection reportedly confirmed the site was reserved for an infrastructure corridor.
The call comes amid litigation over the proposed development and an alternative dispute-resolution process before the FCT ADR Committee. Amnesty says a demolition notice dated 9 October 2026 targets protective boundary structures along the corridor. It argues that proceeding before the outstanding issues are resolved could compromise due process and expose nearby properties and infrastructure to avoidable risks.
The organisation is seeking an urgent legal and technical review, an independent assessment of the corridor’s drainage capacity, and disclosure of the relevant land-allocation records and planning approvals. It also wants development suspended until the risks to public safety, neighbouring properties and the environment have been assessed.
The FCT authorities’ response and any independent technical findings were not included in the reports reviewed. Amnesty’s statements about the corridor, allocation and potential impacts should therefore be attributed to the organisation rather than presented as independently established findings.

The Federal Government has begun discussions with electricity distribution companies on plans to establish special energy zones that could provide round-the-clock power supply to homes, businesses and industries in major high-demand areas across Nigeria.

The proposed zones will initially cover three major corridors: the Lagos axis; the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano corridor; and the Enugu–Port Harcourt corridor. This means Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu and Port Harcourt are among the locations being considered.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, held discussions with selected distribution companies as part of efforts to address challenges at the distribution end of the electricity value chain.

The Federal Government says the initiative is aimed at ensuring that electricity generated and transmitted through the national grid can reach consumers more efficiently. It is also expected to improve power supply to commercial and industrial clusters, unlock economic activity and strengthen the revenue and collection performance of DisCos.

The government says it will support infrastructure development in areas with high electricity demand, particularly locations where reliable power is critical to manufacturing, businesses and other productive activities.

However, the Federal Government has not announced a specific commencement date. It has also not disclosed the amount of electricity to be supplied to the proposed zones or the exact infrastructure projects required to deliver uninterrupted power.
