A Glasgow church pastor is facing a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple charges of rape, physical assault, and child abuse spanning more than two decades.


Rev James Haram, 51, who served with the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing), was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow on 19 separate counts of abuse.

His crimes took place between 1997 and 2020 at addresses in Glasgow, Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, and South Ayrshire.


He was remanded in custody following the verdict and will be sentenced next month.

Pattern of Abuse Against Woman
The jury heard that Haram repeatedly raped, attacked, and verbally abused a woman in his care. He forced her into religious activities, tracked her movements, and subjected her to degrading treatment.


The victim recalled being choked until her “whole body went limp” and described how the pastor pressured her into sex while citing biblical passages.

Haram told her she must “subject” herself to him, leaving her in tears during the encounters.

On one occasion, he deliberately destroyed flowers the woman had spent time growing, as part of his campaign of psychological abuse.


Haram admitted in court to “occasional flare-ups of aggression” but claimed every sexual encounter was consensual.

‘Modesty Checks’ and Child Abuse
Jurors also heard disturbing testimony about Haram’s treatment of children. One girl described being regularly beaten, while others were struck with a wooden spoon or a rod.


He carried out “modesty checks” on young girls to examine what they were wearing and exert control over their appearance.

On one occasion, Haram reportedly flew into a rage while driving with two children, threatening to deliberately crash the car and kill them all. He later claimed the children “knew I did not mean it.”

Judge Condemns Pastor’s Actions
Judge Tom Hughes condemned Haram’s actions as “truly awful,” telling him:


“There were incidents of violence, aggression, and all sorts of difficulties, alongside the sexual offending that took place.
During that period, you appeared to be living a life whereby you were acting in an official capacity as a man of the cloth.
You have now been convicted of extremely serious offences which will obviously carry a lengthy custodial sentence.”

Haram, who had previously been on bail, was immediately remanded in custody.

Community Impact
The revelations have shocked members of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) and the wider Glasgow faith community.

The abuse spanned more than 20 years, during which Haram maintained his role as a religious leader while secretly abusing his position of trust.

He is expected to receive a substantial prison sentence when he returns to court for sentencing next month.

Youths of Agulu community in Anambra have issued a stern warning to politicians against making negative comments about their former governor, Peter Obi

(DDM) – Tension is brewing in Anambra State as youths of Agulu community in Anaocha Local Government Area have strongly cautioned politicians against making derogatory remarks about their kinsman and former state governor, Mr. Peter Obi.


(DDM) gathered that the youths issued the stern warning in a statement released in Awka on Wednesday.


The document was jointly signed by Maduagwu Eric-Kenny, Chairman of the Agulu youth body, and Mr. Chamberlain Egoh, its Secretary.

According to the group, it has become worrisome that certain desperate politicians, while campaigning in the community, resort to mocking or provoking Obi despite having benefitted from his goodwill and support in the past.


The youths described the conduct as “unacceptable” and a calculated attempt to undermine the reputation of one of Nigeria’s most respected political figures.

They emphasized that Obi’s name commands not only local reverence but also international recognition.

“Peter Obi’s name commands respect not only in Nigerian politics but also on the global stage. We will never allow anyone, regardless of position or influence, to diminish his image,” the statement read.


The youths insisted that politicians coming to Agulu for campaigns or other engagements must conduct themselves with decorum and desist from making derogatory remarks about Obi.

They further stressed that any future attempt to malign Obi within Agulu would be met with “organized, peaceful but resolute resistance.”

According to them, the people of Agulu see Obi as a source of pride and identity that has brought recognition to their community and state.


They explained that just as other communities fiercely defend their political elites, Agulu will continue to protect Obi’s image and ensure that no outsider tarnishes his legacy.

The statement also highlighted that Obi remains a leader whose philanthropic and political contributions have impacted countless lives across Nigeria.


Observers say the warning reflects the deep loyalty Obi enjoys in his hometown and across Anambra, where his political influence remains strong.

Analysts also believe the caution could reshape campaign rhetoric in Anambra, especially among politicians seeking grassroots support in Anaocha and neighboring areas.

For many residents, Obi is not only a former governor but also a presidential figure whose political journey has placed Agulu firmly on the national map.

The development has triggered reactions across social media, with supporters praising Agulu youths for standing up in defense of their community leader.

At the time of filing this report, none of the politicians accused of mocking Obi had issued a response.

The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has fired back at Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, over what it described as a “deliberate distortion of political reality” regarding Peter Obi’s influence and the growing strength of the new opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Keyamo, while speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics programme, claimed that Peter Obi cannot penetrate the North, that the ADC-led coalition is going nowhere, and that Obi’s 2023 votes were the result of temporary demographics that would collapse under a merger with Atiku Abubakar.

In a strongly worded response released Monday by the COPDEM National Media Team, the group accused Keyamo of “wishful thinking and nervous projection,” stating that “Tinubu’s camp knows what’s coming, and they are panicking already.”

“Let it be clear: Peter Obi didn’t ride on religious sentiment, ethnic bias, or youthful anger,” the statement said.

“He rode on performance, integrity, and a vision that resonated across Nigeria, including in the North.”

COPDEM reminded Keyamo that Peter Obi won in key Northern areas without political structures, state governors, or billion-naira campaigns, yet still pulled over 6 million votes with the Labour Party, a platform many dismissed as “structureless.”

“Obi beat both Atiku and Tinubu in Abuja. He defeated APC in Nasarawa.

“He polled high numbers in Taraba, Plateau, Southern Kaduna, and parts of Bauchi. Was that demographics too?” the team asked.

On Keyamo’s claim that Obi cannot penetrate the North in 2027, COPDEM said such thinking ignores the growing anger in the North over insecurity, economic collapse, food inflation, and mass poverty, all of which have worsened under Tinubu’s government.
"What Tinubu calls ‘structures’ in the North are now liabilities,” COPDEM declared.

“Structures that cannot protect lives, cannot provide jobs, cannot feed the people, and cannot offer electricity are not political assets, they are vote-killers.”

The team also dismissed Keyamo’s talk of religion and ethnicity as “old, expired political tools” that failed in 2023 and will fail even harder in 2027.

“If religion and tribe were decisive, why did Obi defeat candidates from dominant Muslim regions in areas where Christians are minorities?” COPDEM asked.

“Obi’s appeal in the North grew because of his character, not his church.”

Regarding the new opposition coalition under ADC, COPDEM stated that the merger has put the ruling party in a state of silent panic, noting that combined Obi-Atiku votes in 2023 already surpassed Tinubu’s declared total by over four million.

“With the ADC platform now uniting top figures like Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai, Amaechi, Aregbesola, David Mark and many others, Tinubu’s second-term dream just became a nightmare,” the team said.

COPDEM urged Nigerians not to be distracted by propaganda from Tinubu’s ministers, adding that 2027 will not be decided by media spin but by hunger, fuel price, insecurity, and broken promises.

“Keyamo should face aviation safety, not play prophet on politics,” the statement concluded.

“The North knows who failed them, and they’re ready to vote differently.”

The Labour Party (LP) Senate caucus has strongly condemned Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for his recent threat against Peter Obi, demanding an immediate withdrawal of his remarks and a public apology to all Nigerians.

Governor Okpebholo had on Friday warned that Peter Obi, LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, must not enter Edo State without first obtaining security clearance.

He made the statement during a public event, claiming Obi’s previous visit led to violence, including the killing of three individuals.

“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped N15 million.

Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed,” the governor alleged. “For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance.”

However, in a joint statement issued on Saturday, LP Senators Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Tony Nwoye, and Ezea Okey described the governor’s statement as “executive rascality and abuse of office.”

They said the remarks not only violated Peter Obi’s constitutional rights but also amounted to a threat against his life and personal liberty.


“We humbly urge the Executive Governor of Edo State to quickly withdraw his unguarded statement threatening Mr Peter Obi’s life, freedom of movement, and personal security,” the senators said.

“He must tender an unreserved apology to all Nigerians for violating the Nigerian Constitution, which he swore to uphold.”

The lawmakers cited Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees every Nigerian the right to move freely throughout the country.

They stressed that Obi, as a respected figure in Nigeria’s democratic space, deserves both protection and support.

“Mr Peter Obi is a citizen of Nigeria, and his movement is guaranteed. It should not be curtailed by sheer executive lawlessness and impudence,” they stated.


“As a champion of democracy, nation-building, and sustainable development, Mr Obi deserves to be treated with dignity, not threats.”

The senators also urged the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the governor’s comment, which they described as dangerous and unconstitutional.

According to the LP lawmakers, the current state of Nigeria’s democracy does not have room for “executive recklessness” and must not allow public officers to abuse their positions for political intimidation.

They concluded by warning that continued impunity at the state level poses a serious threat to peace, democracy, and national unity.
