Caf disowns Player of Year list, Glo clashes with MTN Posted On Tuesday, 28th September 2010 The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has disowned a purported list of players named for the 2010 African Player of Year which was originated by MTNFootball.com. The publication has seriously infuriated Glo, the sponsors of the event, who are archrivals of MTN in the telecommunications industry in West Africa. MTNFootball.com, which is owned by South African giants MTN, published on Sunday that 17 players were included in the preliminary list that is dominated by Ghanaians and Ivorians. The Ghanaian quartet of Kevin Prince Boateng, Michael Essien, Kwadwo Asamoah and Asamoah Gyan were named in the list. Other keys players like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Seydou Keita and Emmanuel Adebayor were named in the list with Mikel Obi’s exclusion raising eyebrows. The publication seems to have denied Glo the media publicity opportunity it gains from its scheduled events to unveil the list. Caf, the continent’s governing body, has now distanced itself from the list insisting that it did not leak the information. “CAF wishes to state clearly that the list did not emanate from its offices as there are known procedures for the listing of nominees for the awards,” Caf said in statement. “In the last five years, CAF and Globacom Limited, sponsors of the award ceremony have consistently announced the list through scheduled media events and the same procedure will be followed for the 2010 awards nominees. “In addition, such a list if authored by CAF and Globacom will be posted on the official websites of the two organizations and this has not been the case in respect of the list making the rounds. “We therefore urge the general public and the football community to disregard the said list circulating in some media circles. “CAF will in the days ahead use appropriate channels to unveil the list of leading nominees.” With only Mikel Obi and Andre Ayew exclusions as the only exception, it is hard to believe that the list to be published by Caf would be any different. Even though Caf has denied the list, it could have been leaked from the confederation’s headquarters or from some members of the body’s football committee which draws up the list. MTNFootball.com are independent of the parent company as professional journalist run their football website. But Glo officials are said to be enraged over the publication especially when their main rivals in key markets like Nigeria and Ghana published the list. MTN have made serious inroads in the African football market via their soccer news website MTNFootball.com is one of the leading websites on African football news which has given it the opportunity to enter the football sponsorship market without paying huge amounts of money. The South African outfit was the sponsor of the Caf Africa Player of the Year as well as the African Cup of Nations and Champions League. But Caf handed the award ceremony to Glo in 2008 while the Nations Cup and Champions League was given to Orange, a rival telecommunications firm mainly operating in French countries. |

John Obi Mikel claims Chelsea still have the Premier League running scared despite Carling Cup flop By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER Last updated at 6:08 PM on 23rd September 2010 Add to My Stories John Obi Mikel fears for defenders in the Barclays Premier League as Chelsea prepare to restore normal service against Manchester City on Saturday following their shock Carling Cup exit to Newcastle. The Blues crashed out of the competition when losing 4-3 to Newcastle on Wednesday night, with injuries to Salomon Kalou, Yossi Benayoun and Gael Kakuta compounding a miserable night for the Blues. The trio are unlikely to be involved in the lunchtime clash against City at Eastlands and Frank Lampard may also miss out as he is said to have suffered a further setback in his rehabilitation from hernia surgery. But Mikel believes that any defender facing Chelsea must be running scared after the Blues smashed in 21 goals in their opening five Premier League games. He said: 'If I was a defender playing against Chelsea, I would be very scared because you don't know where we're going to come from - we have Ashley Cole bombing forward on the left side all the time. 'So it is hard to know what to expect when we have all these players bombing forward all the time. If you look at our front three, none of them have a static position, they are all moving around. 'It is the same with the midfield although I tend to stay a little bit more because I cannot afford to leave that position. Playing that way helps us a lot while the other team is thinking about whether to follow Nicolas Anelka's runs, Frank Lampard or Michael Essien.' Essien reveals Man Utd snub for being too small Posted On Wednesday, 22nd September 2010 Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has revealed Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson rejected him twice – because he was too small. Essien, 27, has been in inspired form as Carlo Ancelotti’s side made a perfect start to the season – even helping himself to two goals. But it hasn’t all been all plain sailing for the Ghanaian who was deemed too short for life in the Premier League by Fergie. After missing the World Cup and much of the past two seasons because of knee injuries the former Ghana captain recently announced he was taking a break from international football. His form has benefitted greatly and he has admitted he is also relishing life in the capital. Essien said: ‘I love the city of London, as there’s always something different to do. ‘People are friendly here and they’ve always been good to me – that’s what I love about England.’ And with the Stamford Bridge club already in pole position to retain this year’s title, Essien has turned his sights on the team’s celebrations. In particular those of his African team-mates who vie to perform the best moves every time the club win a competition. ‘Some of the Chelsea players perform African dances after we win a trophy,’ said Essien. ‘I’d say mine is the best, followed by Didier Drogba’s, then John Obi Mikel.’ |

Ghana shows African nations can meet millennium goals 17 Sep 2010 10:46:00 GMT Written by: George Fominyen DAKAR (AlertNet) - Ghana's success as the only African country to have met most of the U.N. targets on poverty and hunger should inspire its neighbours on the continent whose progress on the Millennium Development Goals has so far been slow, experts say. According to government and U.N. figures, the West African country reduced the proportion of people suffering from hunger by three quarters between 1990 and 2004 and halved the share of citizens living on less than $1.25 a day between 1991 and 2006 - a stellar performance well ahead of the global deadline for achieving the eight goals in 2015. The country is also on track to attain primary education for all children and gender parity in all levels of education as set out in the MDGs. (Click here for a graphic on Ghana's MDG progress) "Ghana has witnessed a relative economic boom and the government made use of that to effect policies to reach the poor," said Mamadou Biteye, Oxfam's director for West Africa. Programmes to develop agriculture, industry, mining, and electricity networks in rural areas, provide small loans to the poor, create jobs and improve nutrition have all helped cut the levels of hunger, child malnutrition and poverty in communities across Ghana. "Ghana has shown the possibilities for dramatic progress in tackling hunger and poverty," aid agency ActionAid said in a report entitled "Who's Really Fighting Hunger?". Some analysts sounded a note of caution though, saying that Ghana's overall success hides some inequalities on the ground. "Such glowing figures of progress are not glowing for everyone," Oxfam's Biteye told AlertNet. Despite the decline in poverty nationally, the remaining pockets of destitution disproportionately affect some regions, women and people in certain types of employment. Moreover, in some areas of the country high levels of poverty persist, particularly in the three northern regions that are home to more than 70 percent of extremely poor Ghanaians. "A better distribution of the benefits of (economic) growth through safety nets for the most vulnerable is what is needed from successful countries like Ghana," Biteye said. ActionAid added that Ghana's government must do more to protect the land rights of small-holder farmers and help them adapt to climate change, as well as increase overall spending on small-scale agriculture which is vital for eradicating hunger. But the environment for achieving the MDGs remains right in Ghana thanks to the so-called "social protection" programmes set up by the government, for example monthly cash transfers for extremely poor families, a national health insurance scheme and free school meals which encourages more children to enrol, boosts attendance and improves children's health. "If the political will is there, I think it is possible and realistic to meet the MDGs in sub-Saharan Africa with the knowledge and resources available," Biteye concluded. |
