Connect your iPad to your TV: Apple Digital AV adapter

1. Connect the adapter to your iPad’s dock connector.

2. Connect an HDMI cable to both the TV and the Digital AV adapter. (Note that you can also connect the HDMI cable to a suitably-equipped AV receiver rather than directly to your TV. You can then benefit from the better sound quality from the speakers attached to the receiver.)

3. Using your TV’s remote control, select the correct HDMI input (sometimes they are numbered and the side input is usually identified as such). If you’ve connected an AV receiver, be sure to select the correct input. Many have a front-mounted HDMI input labelled AUX.

4. Turn on your iPad, unlock it and launch the Photos app. You should see the selected photo on both your TV and the iPad.

5. If necessary, you might need to adjust your TV’s settings so the image displays correctly. Commonly the automatic zoom setting tries to avoid any black borders and distorts the image or zooms in and crops the top and bottom edges.

6. Launch the app you want to use. Most of Apple’s apps support HDMI output, but some catch-up TV and video streaming services don’t.

How to Connect Your iPad to Your TV

Connect the iPad to your HDTV through HDMI

Apple's Digital AV Adapter will allow you to connect the iPad to your TV through an HDMI cable, which transfers both HD-quality video and sound. The original iPad is capable of 720p video with the Digital AV Adapter, and the iPad 3 and iPad 2 support up to 1080p.

Like connecting with Apple TV, hooking up an iPad with the Digital AV Adapter supports Display Mirroring, which means you'll see your iPad's display even if the individual app doesn't support video output. This is great for watching Hulu Plus on your HDTV.

You can also stream your movie collection from you PC to your iPad to your HDTV using home sharing. This is a great way to finally switch from DvD and Blu-Ray to digital video without losing the ability to see it on your big screen TV.
The Digital AV Adapter is also a great solution for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and 4th Generation iPod Touch.

(You can also learn how to speed up your iPad to make it run faster)

Connecting the iPad to Your TV With Apple TV and AirPlay
What you need
To use AirPlay, you need these:

iPhone 4 (or later), iPad, iPad mini, or iPod touch (4th generation or later)
For videos or photos: Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)
For music: Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), AirPort Express, or AirPlay-enabled speakers or receivers

Because it's wireless and offers video-streaming extras, the Apple TV is the best solution. It's $99, and you'll most likely keep it in one spot, but freedom from fussing with cables make it the best choice. Plus, there's an awesome bonus for gamers.

With an Apple TV set up, photos, videos, music, and even some app content can be beamed to your TV from your iDevice with a few taps. And, with newer iDevices, you can even mirror your entire iDevice's display, giving you a big-screen view of everything happening on your phone. It all happens through Apple's coveted AirPlay feature.

And now more than ever, developers are adding AirPlay compatibility to their apps. To name a few, Vevo, TED, Hulu (Plus), and PBS all let you beam videos from the app to the Apple TV.
Some games are AirPlay compatible, too, letting you use your iDevice as a controller while you play the game on the big screen. At times, you'll notice lag, and video quality isn't perfect, but Ducati Challenge and Metalstorm: Wingman are just a couple games worth trying out.

Phones / How To Use Find My Iphone To Locate Lost Or Stolen Iphone by OwillyOscar(m): 12:53pm On Aug 15, 2014
What You Need:

A web-connected computer or device
An iOS device
To have enabled Find My iPhone before the device was lost
An iCloud account

1. If Find My iPhone is enabled on your missing device

You can use Find My iPhone to locate your device and take additional actions that can help you recover it and keep your data secure. Sign in to icloud.com/find on a PC, Mac or use the Find My iPhone app on another iOS device.

Turn on Lost Mode. Using Lost Mode, you can remotely lock your device with a four-digit passcode, display a custom message with your phone number on your missing device's Lock screen, and keep track of your device's location.
Locate your device. Open Find My iPhone, and select a device to view its location on a map. If the device is nearby, you can have it play a sound to help you or someone nearby find it.

To prevent anyone else from accessing the data on your missing device, you can erase it remotely. When you erase your device, all of your information will be deleted from the device, and you won't be able to locate it using Find My iPhone. After you erase a device, you can't track it. If you remove the device from your account after you erase it, Activation Lock will be turned off. This allows another person to activate and use your device.

Report your lost or stolen device to the local law enforcement. Don't forget that the law enforcement might request the serial number of your device. Find your serial number:
On the original box or receipt
On My Support Profile if you registered your device with your Apple ID

2. Find My iPhone using the web-based tool

1. Log in using the account you used when setting up Find My iPhone. This is likely your Apple ID/iTunes account.

2. Find My iPhone will immediately begin trying to pinpoint your device. You'll see onscreen messages as it works. If the device is turned off, the map will display its last known location. When it's turned back on, the map will update. If it finds your device, it will zoom in on the map and show the location of the device using a green dot. When this happens, you can zoom in or out of the map, and view it in map, satellite, and hybrid modes, like in Google Maps.

3. When your device must have be found, a window will pop up over the green dot. Click the window and you'll see the various options you have.
The first option is to have it play a sound. Sending a sound to the device is best when you think you've misplaced your device in the house or office and want help finding it. You can simply do this by clicking Play Sound.

4. If you have more than one device configured to use Find My iPhone with this account, you'll see a menu called Devices in the top left corner. Click that to see a list of all devices available to be found.

Phones / 10 Reasons To Use A VPN For Private Web Browsing by OwillyOscar(m): 10:10pm On Aug 14, 2014
1. Download and Upload P2P Files in Privacy

For reasons of both profit and legality, the MPAA and other cinema associations absolutely detest P2P file sharing want to forbid users from sharing movies and music online. They nab offenders by masquerading as fellow file sharers, or by eavesdropping on your ISP signal.

A VPN can always be a P2P user's friend. A VPN connection will slow your bandwidth by 25% - 50%, it will cipher your file uploads, downloads, and actual IP address so that you are unidentifiable by authorities. If you are a file sharer, and do not wish to risk copyright prosecution or civil lawsuits, definitely consider spending 15 dollars a month on a good VPN.

2. Defeat Search-Engine Logging

Google, Bing, and other search engines will catalog every web search you perform. Your online search choices are then attached to your computer's IP address, and are subsequently used to customize advertising and future searches for your machine. This cataloging might seem unobtrusive and perhaps even useful, but it is also a risk for future public embarrassment and social faux pas.

Don't let Google store your searches for 'anti-depressants', 'anger management', 'divorce lawyers', and 'love advice'.

3. Access Restricted Websites

Your workplace will always prevent you from accessing your favorite site. But using a VPN means you’ll never come across another ”website blocked” message. Don’t let the administrators control what you can read or watch and what you can’t.

4. Use Wi-Fi hotspots securely

WiFi hotspots offer us a way to stay connected to the Internet in some of the most unlikely places. When it comes to technology, privacy concerns are the biggest problem with public WiFi connections. Using a VPN service for securing these connections is an effective way to use the Internet on-the-go with total confidence and peace of mind. The VPN turns any Wi-Fi hotspot into an encrypted and firewalled link for your computer or Smartphone.

5. You Believe Privacy Is a Basic Right

You are a firm believer in personal privacy and the right to broadcast and receive without being surveilled and catalogued by authorities. And that is perhaps the biggest philosophical reason you want to spend some dollars monthly on a good VPN connection service.

Computers / How To Perform A Clean Installation Of Windows 8 Or 8.1 by OwillyOscar(m): 12:32pm On Aug 12, 2014
Backup Your Important Data

Be sure to back up any data you want to keep before you begin. Backing up your actual programs isn't usually possible, so locate all the installation media and downloaded installation files that you used to install the programs so they're available to reinstall once the Windows 8 or 8.1 clean install is done.

Disconnect Unnecessary Hardware

Windows 8 should install fine with all of your hardware connected, both internal and external, but if have had trouble installing Windows on your computer before, removing unnecessary internal components (if you have a desktop) and disconnecting USB and other external devices should help. Once the Windows 8 clean install is complete, you can reinstall and connect those devices one at a time.

To perform a clean installation using a DVD or USB flash drive

Turn on your PC to start Windows normally, insert the DVD or USB flash drive, and then shut down your PC.

Restart your PC, and then press any key to boot from the DVD or USB flash drive.

If you restart your PC and your current version of Windows starts, you might have to open a boot menu or change the boot order in your PC's BIOS or UEFI settings so that your PC boots from the media. To open a boot menu or change the boot order, you'll typically need to press a combination of keys (such as Delete, F2, Esc, F12 .) immediately after you turn on your PC. For instructions on changing the boot order for your PC, check the documentation that came with your PC or go to the manufacturer's website.

If your current version of Windows still starts, try again by waiting until Windows asks you to sign in, shutdown completely, and then restart your PC again.

On the Install Windows page, enter your language and other preferences, and then click Next.

Click on Install Windows.

On the Enter the product key to activate Windows page, enter your product key.

This 25-digit alphanumeric code is required during the Windows 8 clean install process. If you've purchased Windows 8 yourself, the product key should be included with the DVD media you received or in the email confirmation you received when you purchased Windows 8 or 8.1 for download. If Windows 8 came preinstalled on your computer, look for a sticker with the product key somewhere on your desktop, tablet, or laptop device. The product key looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms, and then tap or click Next.

On the Which type of installation do you want? page, tap or click Custom.

On the Where do you want to install Windows? page, do one of the following:

In Windows 8, tap or click Drive options (advanced), tap or click the partition that you want to change, tap or click the formatting option you want to perform if needed, and then follow the instructions.

In Windows 8.1, tap or click the partition that you want, tap or click the formatting option you want to perform if needed, and then follow the instructions.

When you've finished formatting, tap or click Next.

Follow the instructions to finish installing Windows.

Phones / Repair Options For Cracked Iphone Screens by OwillyOscar(m): 1:53am On Aug 11, 2014
Find out how to get repair service for your iPhone.

Accidents happen, sometimes a screen can get cracked or shattered. If you’re facing a cracked screen that’s so damaged that it’s hard to use your device, you have a number of options for repairing it. A lot of businesses offer low-cost screen replacement. But if you’re not careful, you could end up violating your warranty from Apple and losing all the support and benefits it offers.

Have AppleCare+?

It’s more important that you go directly to Apple, since using an unauthorized repair shop will not only void your standard warranty but also the AppleCare warranty, meaning you’re just throwing out the money you spent on it. This is likely more than an unauthorized repair shop will charge, but it maintains your warranty and ensures that your repair is performed by the people best trained to do it.

AppleCare+ covers two incidents of accidental damage with a $79 service fee. You can also use our Express Replacement Service to get a replacement even before sending Apple your iPhone. You can check if you have AppleCare+ by entering your iPhone serial number.

Your iPhone is Out of Warranty?

If your iPhone is out of warranty or insurance coverage, you’ve got more options. In this case, choosing a low-cost repair shop may be a good idea since it will save you money. If you don’t have a warranty or AppleCare, you have less to lose by using one of these shops.

It’s a good idea to use a shop that’s experienced with iPhone repair and has a good reputation. Even though they can’t violate a warranty that’s no longer in effect, an unskilled repair-person could cause additional damage to the body or interior electronics of your iPhone, which will cause more problems and could lead you to needing to buy a new phone.

Out-of-warranty* cost:
iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5: $269
iPhone 4s: $199
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, Original iPhone: $149
Plus a $6.95 shipping fee. Fees are in USD and exclude local tax.

iPhone Screens

If Your iPhone Is Under Warranty

Standard warranty that comes with the iPhone doesn’t cover accidental damage, which means that a cracked screen isn’t something that can be fixed for free. But that doesn’t mean you should automatically go to the cheapest repair shop.

One important term of the iPhone warranty is that if the iPhone is opened by anyone other than an Apple-authorized tech, the entire warranty is automatically voided. Virtually all of the cheap repair shops are not Apple authorized.

If you need a repair, the first thing you should do is check to see whether your iPhone is still under warranty. If it is, get support directly from Apple or from an Apple authorized reseller. Importance of having Apple fix your phone is that as of August 2014, Apple Stores can replace screens without having to send your phone out for service.

If You Have iPhone Insurance

If you purchased iPhone insurance through your phone company, the best thing to do is for you to check with your insurance company to understand their policies around screen repair. Most iPhone insurance covers accidental damage. Depending on your policy, though you may have to pay a deductible and a repair fee in many cases, but that may cost less than replacing the iPhone entirely.
If you do have iPhone insurance, make sure to get all the facts and fees before committing to using your insurance.

How long will it take AppleCare?

After sending your iPhone for service, you’ll receive a replacement or your repaired iPhone in three to five business days. A replacement iPhone will be new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability.

Prevent Screen Damage in the Future

Screen protectors – These thin, plastic overlays generally protect the screen from scratches or dings, but they can offer a little extra defense against cracks. A case is a more comprehensive solution, but screen protectors are good add-ons.

A case – Some cases offer screen protection, some don’t. Either way, protecting your iPhone with a case will reduce the possibility of damaging its screen.

AppleCare – For your next phone, consider buying AppleCare . It adds a bit to your overall cost, but it’s worth it to get 2 full years of support and repairs from trained experts.

What it will cost you?

Repair and replacement costs depending on your iPhone model and your AppleCare coverage. Note! Accidental damage isn’t covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.

Phones / 9 Things To Do When You Get A New Iphone by OwillyOscar(m): 11:15am On Aug 10, 2014
1. Activate New iPhone

You can do everything you need right on the iPhone and start using it in just a few minutes. The basic setup process activates the iPhone and lets you choose fundamental settings for using features like FaceTime, Find My iPhone, iMessage, and more.

2. Install iTunes

iTunes is much more than just the program that stores and plays your music. It's also the tool that lets you add and remove video, apps, photos, music, and more from your iPhone. It's also where a number of settings related to what goes on your iPhone live. It's pretty crucial to using your iPhone.
Macs come with iTunes pre-installed; if you have Windows, you'll need to download it (luckily it's a free download from Apple).

3. Set Up Find My iPhone

Open the contacts on your iPhone and click the plus sign in the upper right corner to create a new contact. Adding basic information like your name is only helpful in that Siri knows how to address you.

If you’d like the ability to simply type “Home” into your Maps app, or tell Siri “Take me home,” and get the directions you need, this is the place to specify that information so your phone can reference it later. If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see a spot to add addresses – fill in your work, home, or other address so your conversations with Siri can be more casual as you ask for directions.

After you setup your own contact record, you need to go to Settings > General > Siri > My Info and assign the contact to yourself. If you need to continue adding relatives after this, you can have Siri do the work for you – “My buddy’s name is Rooney.”
With your information setup, Siri will recognize phrases like “Remind me to take out the trash when I get home.”

Find My iPhone is also a feature of iCloud that lets you use the iPhone's built-in GPS to pinpoint its location on a map. You're going to be glad you have this if your iPhone ever goes lost or gets stolen. In that case, you'll be able to locate it down to the part of the street it's on, which can be important information to give to the police if you're trying to recover a stolen phone. But in order to use Find My iPhone when your phone goes missing, you first have to set it up. Do that now and you won't be sorry later.

4. Keep the Party Going

As with any new iPhone, you're going to want to spend plenty of time just playing around and experimenting with your new iThing. In that process, it's conceivable that at some point you'll discover something's no longer working quite right. Fixing the most common software-related problems is simple.

If you're having an issue with a particular app, try manually stopping any background processes: You should double-tap the Home button to bring up the multitasking options. Tap and hold on the offending app and click the red minus sign. Try opening it again.

If that doesn't work, you can try force-rebooting your device. Hold down both the Home and Power buttons until the unit powers down, and keep holding until you see the Apple symbol. Release the power button and you should have a cleaner-running device once it completes its power-up.

If that still doesn't fix a problem with a particular app, you can delete the app and re-install it from the App Store. You'll lose any settings or data from the app, but you won't have to buy it again; Apple's vast servers keep a record of your purchases.

For more serious or system-wide problems, you can bring out the big guns and restore to a backup that was made (automatically!) during a previous sync. Connect your device and Option-click on its name under the Devices heading in iTunes.

If all else fails, you can take off and nuke the site from orbit: On the Summary screen for your device is a Restore button that returns your iPhone or iPod to factory condition. Once you do that, it's possible you might be able to restore from a backup successfully. But if not, all your apps and media are still stored on your Mac -- so while it may be a pain to set everything up, you should be able to get back up and running.

Phones / Ipad Running Slow? Learn How To Make It Run New Again by OwillyOscar(m): 7:41am On Aug 10, 2014
1. Get ride of your most recent apps from memory. To close the application, we need to bring up a list of all running applications. You can do this by double clicking the home button at the bottom of your iPad. When you double click in quick succession, your most recent apps are shown as small windows with their connected icon below it.

Touch the window and swipe toward the top of the screen to close an app, a gesture tat resembles sliding the app off the iPad. Note: If you have not upgraded to iOS 7, you will get a different screen when double-clicking the home button. This screen has all of the application icons lined up across the bottom of the screen with no connected windows. To close an app, simply touch an application and hold your finger down until the icons become visible as wavering light. Small red circles with a minus sign in the middle will appear on the top of the icons. You can simple touch the red circle to close an app. Go ahead and close the first five or six apps and see if that helps. If it doesn't, try closing a few more.

2. You prefer Chrome to Safari? chances are Safari is just going to run faster on your device. Not only do third-party apps update and slow down over time, but a lot of Apple apps have access to certain resources that third-party apps do not. So if your device is starting to feel a little slow, it may be best to remove your downloaded apps and use the Apple's built-In apps for the mean time.

3. Update your iPhone to the latest firmware. Unless you have an iPhone 3G, in which case you might want to stick with the iOS 3.1.3.

4. Clearing a little space can improve your iPad performance. This can be achieved by deleting apps that you no longer use, especially games that you are tired of playing. Also delete your cookies and web history to speed up Safari, though this will cause you to log back into any websites that have saved your login information.

5. Remove all Jailbreaking tweaks, If you're jailbroken, some of your tweaks are probably the cause of your slowdowns. Whether you're customizing your home screen or just installing new features, it may be time to give up on them.

Computers / How To Upgrade Install OS X Yosemite On Your Mac by OwillyOscar(m): 10:35am On Aug 06, 2014
What you'll need...

OS X 10.10 Developer Preview -- Developers can grab the preview through the Dev Center. But if you are not a developer, you could sign up for the new OS X Beta Program and wait for Apple to finally send out invites, or you can download it right here by yourself.

Storage Space -- If you’re having low storage space on hard drive, you’ll need to free up to 20GB or more before beginning the partitioning and installation process.

Types of OS X Yosemite Installation Options

Yosemite supports the usual installation options; clean install and upgrade install. The clean install option has some variants, such as installing on a non-startup drive or on your current startup drive.

Clean Install: Clean install process gets its name from what it will do to your designated target drive, usually your startup drive. It will erase all data completely on the target drive and replace it with the new OS X Yosemite and the default apps that come with it. Making clean install option as your choice will leave your Mac in a similar condition to the day you got it; no user accounts, no user data, and a setup wizard to walk through to create your first administrator account.

A clean install really is for starting from scratch. So, before you decide to make clean install option as your choice, be sure to back up all of your data in order for you not to loose them.

Upgrade Install: Upgrade install will remove the existing version of OS X completely from the startup drive. It will update all applications that Apple includes with the OS, such as Safari and Mail and it will also update all needed system files. An upgrade install won't make changes to your user data; as a result, your user accounts and any data associated with them will remain the same. When you first run an app, such as Mail, it's likely that your mail data will be updated to work with the new version of Mail included with Yosemite. This same user data upgrade may occur with multiple apps. For this reason, you should not expect to be able to go back to the previous version of the OS if you decide you don't like OS X Yosemite, at least not without using the backup you made before you installed it.

How to Upgrade Install OS X Yosemite on Your Mac

Let's Get Started
The first step in installing Yosemite is to check your Mac's startup drive for any problems, including repairing permissions. You can do this by using the instructions in our guide:

Using Disk Utility to Repair Hard Drives and Disk Permissions

When you're done, come back here and follow the upgrade install process.

OS X Yosemite is available from the Mac App Store, and is a free upgrade from OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or later. If you're running a version of OS X older than 10.6.x, you'll need to first purchase Snow Leopard and then install it on your Mac.
Download OS X Yosemite

Launch the Mac App Store by clicking its icon in the Dock.

You'll find OS X Yosemite in the right-hand All Categories sidebar, under the Apple Apps category. But, if you signed up for the OS X Yosemite public beta and received a beta access code from Apple, you'll find the download by clicking the Purchases tab at the top of the Mac App Store window.

Select the OS X Yosemite app and click Download button (the download is in excess of 5 GB, so it will take a bit of time).

Once the download process is complete, you're ready to start the installation process.
Upgrade Install OS X Yosemite

1. Install OS X Yosemite, the installer usually starts up automatically after the download is complete; if it didn't start up, simply double-click the Install OS X Yosemite file.

2. When the Install OS X app opens, click the Continue button to proceed the upgrade.

3. Click the Agree button of Yosemite license agreement to proceed.
4. A small sheet will appear, asking you to confirm that you have actually read the license agreement. Click the Agree button.
5. You'll be presented with your Mac's startup drive as the install destination for OS X Yosemite. If this is correct, click the Install button. You can also select the Show all Disks button to allow you to select a different drive to install on. If you don't wish to overwrite your startup drive with the new OS, select Quit Install OS X from the Install OS X menu.

6. Enter your administrator password and click OK.
7. The installer will begin by writing needed files to the startup drive; this process can take a few minutes. When it's complete, your Mac will restart.
8. After the restart, your Mac will display a gray screen with a progress bar for a short period of time. Eventually, the display will change to show an install window, with a progress bar and a time estimate.Once the progress bar completes, your Mac will restart again, and you'll be taken to the login screen.
9. The OS X Yosemite has been installed and you're ready to start the setup process, where you configure the OS to meet your personal preferences.

Computers / Using Disk Utility To Repair Hard Drives And Disk Permissions. by OwillyOscar(m): 8:05am On Aug 06, 2014
Disk Utility allows you to work with your hard drives. You can use Disk Utility to format, erase, partition a drive and also to repair problems that may crop up from time to time.

Disk Utility provides two unique functions. One lets you repair file and folder permissions and the other help you repair a hard drive.
Repair Disk

Disk Utility repair common disk issues like corrupt directory entries to files left in unknown states, usually from power outages, forced application quits, or forced restarts . Disk Utility’s Repair Disk feature is extremely good at making minor disk repairs to a hard drive’s file system, and it also make most repairs to a hard drive’s directory structure, but it’s no replacement for a good backup planning. The Repair Disk feature is not as determined as some third-party applications that do a better job of repairing hard drives as well as recovering files, something Repair Disk is not designed to do.
Repair Disk Permissions

Disk Utility’s Repair Disk Permissions feature is designed to restore file or folder permissions to the state the OS and applications expect them to be. Permissions are flags set for each item in the file system. They define whether an item can be read, written to, or executed. Permissions are first set when an application or group of files are installed. The installation includes a .bom file that lists all the files that were installed, and what their permissions should be set to.

Using Disk Utility to Repair Hard Drives and Disk Permissions (Disk Utility).

What You Need

Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/.
Ten minutes to an hour of your time, depending on which First Aid tools you will be using.

Disk Utility’s Repair Disk feature works with any hard drive connected to your Mac, except the startup disk. If you select the startup disk, the ‘Repair Disk’ button will be dulled out. You will only be able to use the Verify Disk feature, which can examine the drive and determine if something is wrong.

Repairing a startup drive with Disk Utility is very possible. To perform this operation, you must boot from the OS X installation DVD or boot from another hard drive that has OS X installed. Aside from the time required to restart from another hard drive an installation DVD or the Recovery HD, using Disk Utility’s Repair Disk feature otherwise works the same way and takes the same amount of time.

Repair Disk

1. Back up your drive first.

It is always a good idea to create a new backup of a suspect drive before running Repair Disk. While Repair Disk usually doesn’t cause any new problems, it’s possible for the drive to become unusable after an attempt to repair it. It’s just that the drive was in such bad shape to begin with that Repair Disk’s attempt to scan and repair it kicked the drive over the edge.

2. Launch Disk Utility (located at /Applications/Utilities/).

3. Select the ‘First Aid’ tab.

4. Select the hard drive or volume you wish to run Repair Disk on, in the left-hand pane.

5. Tick in the ‘Show details’ box.

6. Click on ‘Repair Disk’ button.

7. If Disk Utility encounter any errors, repeat the Repair Disk process until Disk Utility reports ‘The volume Bleep appears to be ok.’

Killer Password
1. Swap In Non-Alphabetic and Uppercase Characters
Password strength increases significantly when you change some of the password letters into non-alphabetic characters, and then include uppercase and lowercase letters within the password. This 'character scrambling' creatively uses the shift key, punctuation marks, semi-colons, the @ or % symbols, and even numbers and periods. These remarkable characters and numbers make your password even less predictable to hackers using dictionary database attacks.

Examples:

Htw@Win7%
Daughters10@%
PayPal5@ylc
Htw@Win7%

2. Start With a Base Word Phrase
A good password starts with a base word phrase. This means: choose a memorable catchphrase, quotation, or easy-to-remember saying, and take the first letter from each word. Choose a phrase that is memorable to you.

3. Utilize the Strength Test
Making use of a strength test can ensure that your password is top performing. Several online resources, including How Secure Is My Password, allows you to instantly see how strong your password is.

4. Change Your Password Regularly
At home, you should change your passwords as a matter of good computer hygiene. At work, your network people will require you to change your password every several days. If you are using different passwords for different websites, you can do yourself a favor by changing portions of your passwords every few weeks or months. Changing parts of the password, not the entire passwords, will help deter hackers from stealing your phrases. If you can memorize three or more passwords at the same time, then you are in good shape to resist hacker attacks.

Computers / How To Map A Network Drive In Microsoft Windows 7 (shortcut) by OwillyOscar(m): 5:31am On Aug 04, 2014
1. Open Windows Explorer by double clicking on the Computer icon on the Desktop.

2. Click "Map Network Drive" on this menu bar. Another new window will open to prompt for Shortcut additional information.

3. In the Drive list, click a drive letter. You can choose any available letter.
Map a network Drive in Microsoft Windows 7

4. Next, specify the remote location to be made a mapped drive on the local PC. The location must be a UNC path for a device that is currently reachable over the network. The path can either be typed manually or selected via the Browse... button that allows navigating through available devices and shares on the network.

5. In the Browse for Folder dialog box navigate to the folder to be mapped and press OK

6. Click Finish button

You can also create shortcuts to Internet locations, such as websites or FTP sites.

Here’s how to do that:

Open Computer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Computer.
Right-click anywhere in the folder, and then click Add a network location.
Follow the steps in the wizard to add a shortcut to a location on your network, a website, or an FTP site.

Note: Windows 7 maintains a list of network drives each user has mapped. By default, each time a user logs in to a PC, Windows automatically makes connections to each of their network drives and maps them in Windows Explorer so that they are available for immediate use. If a user wants a certain drive mapping to be purged and forgotten when they log out, they can un-check the box "Reconnect at logon" on the Map Network Drive window when initially defining it.

Phones / Re: The 10 Best Features Of Ios 8 To Make Your Ipad Operate Like A PC by OwillyOscar(m): 1:17am On Aug 03, 2014
hmm! 3pleo
That's the complete list though
3pleo: 1. Family Sharing

Another huge step forward in Family Sharing. This allows up to six family members to share books, music, movies and (presumably) apps between their own individual Apple ID accounts. The only requirement is the Apple IDs must all link to the same credit card.
Currently, many multi-device families share the same Apple ID so they can get at the same media. But this has its drawbacks. It means each device is plugged into the same iMessage and FaceTime, essentially giving you some crossfire from the other devices. With Family Sharing, each family member's device can be on its own Apple ID, allowing them to serve as truly separate devices without sacrificing the ability to share music and movies.

Family Sharing also has a pretty neat parental function. If your kid wants to download a $1.29 game on his iPad, you can receive a Yes/No permission message on your iPhone, either allowing the download or disallowing it. This will make monitoring the apps a lot easier.
Perhaps this will open the door for multiple accounts on a single device in the future.  Currently, it is possible, but by no means seamless.

2. Better App Store

The App Store has seen some criticism in its 6 years even if it has been functioning fine. Because it is so large, it is hard to keep everyone happy. The iOS 8 has updated it to make it better and more accessible. First of all, the icons are bigger and the items are spaced better. It has also addressed one of the biggest complaints, which is discoverability.

With the new OS, looking for new apps in the App Store is easier. There is a new button, "explore", that combines the buttons from before into one area with categories and sub-divisions. Also, the search button can show you a list of trending searches without typing anything. Once you type something, the App Store displays a list of items related, improving app discovery.

3. iPhoto, iTouch, HealthKit, HouseKit and more...

These are the features that will change the landscape of the iPad and iPhone by allowing more complex applications to run faster and interoperate like they've never been able to do before iOS 8. But there's much more packed into the next big step for iOS.
iPhoto is getting the ability to apply various features to brighten a photo or bring out the color using smart analytics under the hood without the need to know everything about contrast, brightness and exposure. These smart controls will help you turn that good photo into a great photo.
iTouch is being released into the wild. Currently, its mainly used to unlock your phone or purchase apps. With the iTouch API, any developer can get at iTouch and allow you to do things such as sign in or make purchases.
HealthKit is another neat feature. Apple is building a new connectivity into iOS that will allow your device to communicate with various hospitals, with the goal of alerting them to a problem faster than before via this new layer. The various health-related accessories that take blood pressure, monitor blood-sugar levels, check heart rate and track exercise will feed into the same interface, allowing you to get a better look at your health and fitness goals.
HouseKit is something that hit the buzz feed in recent weeks. Basically, Apple is doing their part to build a smarter house by creating a communication layer that will allow iOS devices to better communicate and control various smart devices around the house. You could dim your lights, open your garage door or even unlock your front door from your device. And you can combine actions, dimming the lights and making sure the doors are locked and the garage door is closed before getting ready for bed.

4. Continuity via AirDrop Handoff

AirDrop Handoff is a cool feature that any family that has multiple Apple devices will really enjoy. Essentially, it allows your Apple devices to talk to each other, allowing you to seamlessly transition from one to another. So if you are on a website with your MacBook and want to show it to your wife/husband in the other room, you can pick up your iPad, tap the Handoff button to automatically load the website, and walk into the room with a much lighter device. Or, if you start an email on your iPhone but want to finish it with a better keyboard, you can hand it off to your MacBook.

5. Extensibility and a New Kind of Multitasking

The protective bubble that surrounds each app can now be pierced via a new feature called Extensibility. This essentially uses the security layers in iOS to allow a piece of code from one app to run inside another app. So, for example, you could load up the Photos app, tap a photo and apply a filter from an entirely different application to that photo. Or you could load a web page and use the Bing app to translate a page from German to English.
Basically, it is multitasking within apps. Instead of popping out of the app your working in and running a new app to get at a certain functionality, you run a snippet of the app within your original app. In order to apply that filter to the photo in the Photos app in iOS 7, you would need to exit Photos, launch the other app, load the picture into it, apply the filter, save the changes, go back to the Photos app and delete the original picture to keep from having duplicates. In iOS 8, you will tap a button, choose the app, choose your filter, and save, all without leaving the Photos app.

6. Metal and Swift

Metal is a new graphics engine that will reduce the overhead of OpenGL, allowing games to process graphics up to 10 times faster. This means console-quality graphics on an iPad, and it could easily open the door for the type of games that you'd ordinarily need an Xbox or PlayStation to run.
Swift is a new programming language for developers to use in building apps. Billed as "Objective-C without the C", it gives the power and control of Objective-C without the huge overhead of writing lines and lines of code to do very simple things. More importantly, it's faster than Objective-C, so apps will be able to process information faster.
Both of these combine to mean more complex and more beautiful apps and games. Which is a good thing, because Extensibility and document sharing are going to open some new doors for iOS.

7. WidgetsWidgets

Are actually a byproduct of Extensibility, but they deserve their own mention. By using Extensibility and extending code to the Notification Center, apps can have their own individual widget. For example, the ESPN app you feed current scores and news from your favorite teams. Instead of launching the ESPN app, you just pull down the notification center and check for the latest news. This is a great way to get at multiple sources in one location, and because the notification center works from the lock screen, you don't even have to unlock your iPhone or iPad.

8. iCloud Drive and Document Sharing

iCloud Drive is more than just Apple's answer to Dropbox. It's Apple's answer to a central repository of documents for your iOS devices. That's huge. Currently, each app lives in its own bubble. One app can't touch documents or information from another app without permission, so working on a document in Microsoft Word and then opening it in Pages requires jumping through a hoop. That will change with iCloud Drive. You'll be able to store all of your documents in a single spot and modify them from multiple applications.
iCloud Drive will also be a huge boon to those who take a lot of photos. iCloud Drive can act as a photo and video repository, storing all of your pictures from all of your iOS devices in one central location. You'll be able to get at iCloud Drive from your iPad, iPhone, Mac or Windows PC.

9. Predictive Texting
According to Fast Co Labs, there will be a row of words that appear right above the keyboard. This is really handy when it comes to replying to text messages. There is a quick-type feature that lets you put in a few letters and will predict the word that you are typing. Surely many people will ignore it because they are used to typing the entire words, and may find it faster to do it the traditional way. This really becomes useful when it comes to replying to messages.
For example, a person will ask another individual if he or she wants to go out for dinner or go see a movie, the choices will be pre-populated. This will make it easier for the user to reply, and will no longer require them to type their reply. The predictive element will also allow for tailored responses based on how you speak to different contacts like your parents, kids, or friends.

10. Automatic Hotspot and Phone calls

Apple introduced a way for an iPhone to automatically become a hotspot for your computer and then also give you the ability to answer or make calls through your computer. You are thinking it is Google Voice, Hangouts and hotspot apps already on Android right? But see, that’s the thing – this is all seamless integration that doesn’t require launching an app or signing up for Google Voice. With Apple’s new voice call and hotspot integration, everything is just ready to work.
With the Hotspot idea, your computer recognizes that your iPhone is near and then lets you connect to it via hotspot to use your phone’s data connection. It just appears in your list of WiFi options to connect to without ever turning anything on on your iPhone. On Android, you could tap on a widget or icon to load up your hotspot, then activate it, but automatic is automatic, and something I think we would all prefer.
With voice calls on iOS 8, you can answer or place calls on your computer as long as your iPhone is attached (likely tethered) to your computer. Now, you can do this with Google Voice/Hangouts integration on Android, but that’s another app or service you have to sign-up for. Apple is allowing you to do all of this without signing up for something separate. Google seems to be moving this direction with Hangouts (or has at least promised that it’s coming). While iOS 8 has been announced, it won't be released until sometime in the September to October time frame.

Without going into too much detail, i bet you would like to see Android adopt the interactive notifications system that lets you respond to messages directly from your notifications center without having to open up other apps; more seamless mobile hotspot and phone call integration with your computer that doesn’t require signing into other services; faster ways to access the people you call and message the most; basically all the new features that Apple brought to Messages in iOS 8; the Family Sharing feature that lets you share things you’ve bought on up to six different iOS devices as long as they’re all registered with the same credit card; and the new App Store feature that will let developers bundle their apps together and sell them at a discount.

5. Strong VPN

Strong VPN is one of the most expensive high quality choice out there, but readers in the Pacific Rim and Asia say that Strong VPN performs very well for them when compared to its marketplace opponent. The price point varies with your part of the world, but expect in the range of $20USD per month. The Strong VPN owners promise that there is no logging or scanning of their customers' data, and many readers recommend Strong VPN. Try it for a month and let me know if Strong VPN works for you. Strong VPN cost: $55/year, $8/month. Good support for users in Asia. Offers L2TP and PPTP protocols.
6. Private Internet Access

Privacy matters to you but you want a US based solution right?, then private internet access (PIA) offers a incredible service. It keeps no logs, uses shared IPs, and accepts unamed payment via Bitcoins. It also has newly implemented strong OpenVPN encryption with up to 256-bit AES OpenVPN, with 4096-bit RSA handshake encryption and SHA-256 hash authentication, a very attractive aspect of Windows and OSX client with DNS leak protection, port forwarding, IPv6 leak protection and an internet kill switch, is happy with P2P downloading, and allows up to five devices to connect simultaneously. Compared to VyprVPN and ExpressVPN lots of complaints that private internet access is not very non-techy friendly, but for experienced users not worried about it being based in the US.

One particularly interesting privacy feature of PIA is their 'shared IP addresses'. Because multiple subscribers will be assigned the same IP addresses while they are logged onto PIA, it makes it impossible for authorities to match individual file transfers to any individual on the service. With near-perfect anonymity services, PIA has some very beneficial features, like auto-disconnecting you when the VPN cloaking goes offline, and concealing DNS leaks from hackers and authorities.

Positives sides: no logs, fast, uses shared IPs, up to 256-bit AES OpenVPN encryption, client features port forwarding, 3 simultaneous connection, Android app, P2P: yes, accepts Bitcoin, VPN kill switch and DNS leak protection
Negatives sides: No free trial, based in US.
7. Overplay
Overplay is a UK-based service and is definitely worth looking at. Overplay does not have the server size of HideMyAss or Witopia, the performance is strong, and readers comment that they average over 6 megabits-per-second speeds. The basic service is very reasonably priced at $5.00/month. Premium service is $10/month.
Overplay cost: $60 yearly and $5.00 monthly. Supports PPTP protocols and OpenVPN, access points in 12 countries and high speed servers.

A Network Attached Storage device (NAS) can store your media library of movies, music and photos so that your network media player can access it easily. NAS is more fully featured than a simple external hard drive you can think of. A Network Attached Storage device can serve as a backup drive for all of your networked computers. You won’t find a demo of a NAS in your local retailer. To go for the best, read reviews before purchasing.

Computers / The Best VPN Service Providers, 2014 by OwillyOscar(m): 4:46pm On Jul 29, 2014
Private Encryption to Cloak Your Online Data Activity
Best VPN Service Providers
VPN speeds: expect your internet speed to be reduced by up to 75% while you are using your VPN. VPN speeds of 2 to 4 Mbps are common for cheaper VPN's. Speeds of 5 Mbps per second are very good. VPN speeds over 15 Mbps are excellent.

VPN encryption protocols: there are 3 common written code options for VPN's: PPTP, L2TP/IPsec and OpenVPN. But for most desktop users, OpenVPN is the strongest encryption and fastest data transfer. L2TP may be an even better option than OpenVPN in two special circumstances: you want to use multiple mobile devices on your VPN; or if you live in a country with highly stressful government rules on internet use (e.g. China). While not as fast as OpenVPN, L2TP is also very difficult for authorities to block, and it generally offers more assistance for mobile devices.
1. Witopia
Witopia is a well respected name in the VPN arena, notwithstanding that users do say that the software can be frustrating to install and configure. The speeds that you can expect on Witopia are also similar to other VPN's: in the range of 2 Mbps to 9 Mbps but anything above 5 Mbps is good, depending on your closeness to the Witopia servers. As added reassurances for those seeking to cloak your browsing and file sharing habits: Witopia promises never to disclose, scan, record or sell logs of your information. Witopia comes recommended by several readers who do serious file sharing, so if you're tech shrewd enough to install and configure some advanced software, Witopia can be an excellent VPN choice and it cost: $6/ month; $50/year. Supports OpenVPN, L2TP and PPTP.
2. VyprVPN

VyprVPN is a very big provider run by global consortium Golden Frog who has legally moved to Switzerland, giving them more freedom and non-US jurisdiction, with servers in 38 countries worldwide. It has simple but effective Windows and OSX clients, and very nice Android and iOS apps. Linux is also supported. 2 or 3 devices for the premier package can be connected at once, and 160-bit to 256-bit OpenVPN encryption. Note that these comments apply to the Pro service, not the PPTP-only Basic plan, which is not really secure and so should be avoided. They do keep connection logs, but no usage logs.

VyprVPN own their own networks and data centers, which is not something many VPNs can be excessively proud of, giving them extremely good speeds and control over their service. They’ve also built their own protocol called “chameleon” which can hide the fact that you are using a VPN entirely, which is very useful in places like China and Egypt.

Positive side of VyprVPN: fast, 160-bit and 256-bit OpenVPN encryption (Pro only), servers in 38 counties, 7 days money back guarantee, Android app, iOS app, up to 3 connections at the same time, P2P: yes
Negative side of VyprVPN : a bit expensive

Computers / VPN Troubleshooting Guide For Remote Workers by OwillyOscar(m): 6:06pm On Jul 28, 2014
1. Determine if you are having performance problems. Sometimes, you may find that although a VPN connection is functional, it is very slow. When this happens, you have to do some performance monitoring on your basic organization servers to ensure that they are not experiencing performance delay in progress.

Public service or system servers are the source of performance problems, you will usually have multiple users complaining about poor performance. If only a single user is complaining, the problem is likely to be related to that user's Internet connection. I at a friends place whose Internet service was so slow that I hardly checked my email. If that happened to an end user, he or she might assume that the hotel's Internet service was running at a normal speed but that the VPN server was having problems.

2. Double-check the VPN settings. If you're an employer, you IT Department will have provided you with instructions and login information for the VPN, and possibly a software client to install. Make sure the configuration settings are entered exactly as specified; re-enter the login information just in case.

3. Test connecting to resources by IP address rather than server name. You should try connecting to network resources by their IP address instead of their name. If you can access previously difficult to get resources by using IP addresses, you can bet that a DNS problem is to blame. If that happens, you should check to see which DNS server VPN clients are configured to use.

4. Make sure you have a working Internet connection. Launch your browser and try visiting different sites to make sure your Internet access is really working. If you're on a wireless network and have Internet connection or signal strength problems, you'll need to first solve wireless connection problems before you can use VPN.

Computers / Why You Need A Personal VPN Service by OwillyOscar(m): 11:06am On Jul 27, 2014
You need a personal VPN service because it create a huge barrier for hackers trying to access your computer. This barrier is essentially a wall of strong encryption that protects all the network traffic entering or leaving your computer. By having your personal VPN, you're simply frustrating the hacker's ability to hack your computer network secretly.

Benefits associated with you having your personal VPN service includes:

1. Encrypted connection prevents hacking. Most VPN services allow you to encrypt your traffic when traveling with your mobile or computer devices so that everything you do is encrypted and private, even when you're on an open public Wi-Fi hotspot. It is easy for a hacker to jack your connection since most hotspots do not use wireless encryption and thereby allowing him to see what you are up to if you are using the wide-open in store Wi-Fi. But let me ask you a question, have you ever been at a coffee shop and saw a creepy looking guy (though they look innocent at times) with a laptop? He could be using a special software to listen secretly on anyone in the area who is using the wide-open in store Wi-Fi.

2. Anonymous Browsing. One of the stylish features of a personal VPN service is anonymous browsing. We most times use intermediate VPN servers to connect to the internet, the websites you visit under normal circumstances can't see your true IP address. They can only see the address of the VPN proxy server that you are connected to. If not all, but most VPN services allow you to switch this IP address multiple times per month and some may automatically switch it for you every so often.

But this doesn't give you a free pass to do illegal things or visit illegal sites as digital forensics type hackers could still track you down and potentially subpoena ISP and VPN service provider records to see your actions.

Phones / How To Automatically Backup The Photos And Videos On Your Mobile Phone? by OwillyOscar(m): 8:49am On Jul 19, 2014

10 Home Networking Problems and Mistakes to Avoid
Published by Owilly Oscar on Monday, 7 July 2014 | No comments

1. VLAN false belief. VLAN is one basic networking concept that lingers as a dark unknown to most people. The three most confusing concepts seem to be: try understanding when to tag and when not to tag, when and where to extend VLANs in the network. Note that when something is being switched at Layer 1 on a VLAN and routed at Layer 2 from a VLAN with an IP. Try as much as possible to master these three issues and you’ll have very few VLAN grief when scheming and troubleshooting.

2. Expecting Too Much Too Quickly. It is important to not ask for what we want from networking contacts right away. We’ve got to give before we get. Firstly, get to know your contact, and see what skills or services you can provide for that person and also try not to think about what they can do for you just yet. The goal is to widen your network and make meaningful connections so that they can or may help you later.

3. Network Won't Reach Certain Areas. Sometimes, networks won't easily reach all the areas in your office or home as the case may be. Stringing network cables directly to your office or room may not be able to work effectively. But even with wireless networks, "cold spots" where Wi-Fi radio signals won't reach corner of your bedrooms or even the fully enclosed windows in your office. Be ready to make a few concessions in your network installation plan.

Phones / How Can The Wi-fi Signal Range Of A Laptop Computer Be Improved? by OwillyOscar(m): 7:23am On Jul 05, 2014
Check transmission power settings. Most network adapters support adjusting their transmission power. This setting can be change slightly through the adapter's driver interface program, along with the other settings for wireless profiles and Wi-Fi channel number. The transmission power should be set to maximum to ensure the strongest signal possible. If your laptop is being running in a power saving mode, this setting can automatically decrease the adapter's range and signal strength of computer.

Troubleshoot your Wi-Fi. Your network's wireless manner of functioning can sometimes seem like a puzzling exercise, there are two factors to consider mainly range and speed. You can choose to have one and leave the other. It's always a great thing to have a screaming-fast wireless network, but in the condition where you only have good speed when your laptop is right next to the router, then the speed isn't worth much. The best thing you can do to help yourself out is to boost your signal's range. But in the case where you can barely launch your social apps like Twitter or even view your profile on Facebook when you're right next to your router, then the problem we're be talking about here should be speed.

Phones / How To Sync Your Data Across Multiple Devices by OwillyOscar(m): 6:36pm On Jul 04, 2014
This "not restricted" mobility means having access to the crucial information you need regardless of where you are or what device you're using, its more crucial than ever that you’re able to access important files across devices, platforms and apps.

Follow these guild to help keep your documents, address book, email, event calender and files updated wherever and whenever your business leads you.

Sync Your Data Across Multiple Devices

Documents and files. It is necessary to shuttle documents between computers on thumb drives or other external storage. Luckily, we have cloud services such as the SugarSync, Mozy, Box and Dropbox to store files for easy access from any Web-connected device.
One occurring mistake we made when using cloud storage is that we sometimes don't even care to save newly created files in synchronized folders properly. It is possible to synchronize the entire desktop or default document folders to prevent this. But the possibility is to discipline yourself to create all new documents in a synchronized “catchall” folder. I'm going to explain how to use Dropbox as one of the cloud service for a better understanding.

Dropbox Sync

Starting with Strip for iOS 1.6.0, strip creates an encrypted faithful copy of your data and stores it in your Dropbox account. No encrypted data is stored in plain text, on every later attempt to sync, Strip downloads a copy of the encrypted faithful copy, exchanges all changes between the replica (the faithful copy) and your local database, and then replaces the copy out on Dropbox with the updated ones.
Steps on how to sync with Dropbox in Strip for iOS:

Launch Strip for iOS on your iPhone, iPad or your iPod Touch
Tap on the sync tab
Set the Operation row to “Sync” ( not overwrite or restore)
Set the Mode row to “Dropbox”
Tap on the Account row to to let you sign into your Dropbox account
Tap the Start Sync button
Wait for Dropbox to perform sync on your device background

How to Sync Calendar Events, Contacts, IM and
also keeping Emails.

Account setup in email programs: Before performing this operation, make sure your email host or web allows you to choose between IMAP and POP protocols for accessing your email, IMAP is the easiest for multilevel-computer access: it keeps a faithful copy of all emails on the server until you decide to delete them, you can also access the same emails from different devices. If you're using POP: which downloads your emails directly to your computer, note that most email programs have a setting where you can leave a copy of messages on the server until you may decide to delete them. As a POP user, you automatically enjoy same benefits as IMAP user, don't forget that you would have to find and select this setting in your email plan of action (program).

Phones / How To Back Up Your Android Phone Or Tablet by OwillyOscar(m): 12:50am On Jul 03, 2014
Simple Backup for your Android
At the Home screen, touch the Apps icon >> Choose Settings >> Display your Google account information >>
On the stock Android version of the Settings app, swipe down the screen until you find the Accounts heading. Choose Google >> On some Samsung tablets, choose the General tab to find the Accounts item. Choose Google from the right side of the screen >>

Touch the green Sync icon by your Gmail address >> The Sync icon, although it may appear slightly different on your tablet’s screen >> Ensure that check marks appear by every item in the list >> Sure!, there are a lot of items.

Each one needs a check mark if you want that item backed up >> Touch the Back icon twice to return to the main Settings app screen >> Choose Backup & Reset >> The command may also read as Back Up and Reset, or some such similar variation >>
Ensure that a check mark appears by the item Back Up My Data.

A backup of the data stored on an Android tablet would include all data, including photos, videos, and music. Specifically, the folders you should copy are Download, DCIM and Music. Other folders that you would want to backup include folders named after apps you’ve downloaded, such as Kindle, Aldiko, Apk, Layar, and other folders named after the apps that created them also.Read more...http://trendymediablog.com/2014/07/how-to-back-up-your-android-phone-or-tablet/

Phones / Tips To Save Ipad Battery Life by OwillyOscar(m): 2:03pm On Jun 30, 2014
Turn off Bluetooth. Unless you are typing away in front of your iPad 2 with a Bluetooth keyboard, it's highly likely that you can do without Bluetooth for a time. Go to Settings > General and Bluetooth will be the fourth item listed. Set the slider to Off.

Turn off Push Mail and fetch data manually. The more frequently email or other data is pushed or fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To turn off Push and to fetch new data manually, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and set Push to Off. Then set Fetch to Manually. Messages sent to your push email accounts will now be received on your iPad based on the Fetch setting rather than as they arrive.

Turn off GPS.
Applications that actively use location services, such as Maps, may reduce battery life. To monitor location usage, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. You can see which applications have recently used location services (a key at the bottom of the preference pane explains each icon). If you see an application that you do not expect to be consuming battery power by using location services, you can disable by setting the switch next to the application to Off. To disable all location services, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and set Location Services to Off.

Disable ping.
Ping, Apple's social networking music service, is enabled by default in iOS 4.3. It has been widely accused of adversely affecting battery life. To turn it off, go to Settings > General and enable Restrictions. Enter a four-digit passcode, and slide Ping to off.

Adjust your iPad brightness.
Managing the screen brightness is the best way to extend iPad battery life. Auto-Brightness adjusts iPad screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions, therefore minimizing battery drain. Adjust your brightness when indoors in a nonbright environment by going to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness and dragging the slider to the left to dim. After making this change, turn Auto-Brightness off and then on again to reset to the default behavior.
