CareerWAEC To Approve New Allowances For Examiners by oyindamini(op): 4:19pm On Jul 14, 2015
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said on Sunday that it would soon approve new allowances it pays to examiners toward fulfilment of the council’s mandate.

The council’s Head of National Office (HNO), Dr Charles Eguridu, disclosed this in an interview with NAN in Lagos.

Eguridu spoke against the backdrop of claims by some examiners that the council was not paying them allowances that were commensurate with the volume of work they did.

“We at WAEC laud our examiners for their commitment, sacrifice, support and contribution to the overall work of the council.

“The work they actually do is of high value to us and they are one of our critical stakeholders. One cannot really say that their complaints are misplaced.

“We appreciate their contributions a lot and wish that we have all the monies to express this appreciation in the much they deserve.

“But the fees we charge are highly subsidised by government. Our fee is not an economic one and to that extent, we are limited in terms of resources at our disposal, to pay examiners.

“I, however, assure them that we are already looking into their complaints with a view to increasing their allowances in the soonest,” Eguridu said.

He said the council would continue to take necessary actions to the benefit of all its stakeholders.

One of the examiners who preferred not to be mentioned told NAN that there was the need for WAEC to review its welfare package to all of its ad hoc staff.

He said that it was risky for WAEC to lose the services of examiners because of poor allowances. “The allowances we get are not encouraging and are not commensurate with the job we do for the council,” he said.

Another examiner, who also did not want to be mentioned, told NAN that other examination bodies in the country paid better allowances than WAEC. “The stress associated with the logistics of examination materials involves much risk and it is painstaking.

“We spend so much on transportation during the marking exercise and at the end of the day, you discover that it is not worth the trouble. I have been marking for the council for the past eight years and I can tell you that the allowances are poor.

“It is time WAEC looked inwards to do the right thing in order to get better results from us,” he added.

HealthVictim Of Deadly Disease In Ode Irele by oyindamini(op): 10:43am On Apr 17, 2015
The strange disease outbreak that has claimed more than twenty five lives in Ode Irele in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, still fears people dead. In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the community leader, Ayodele Omole, stated that the “strange ailment” broke out on Wednesday morning and had already created panic among residents, adding that many people were fleeing from the community. In a radio broadcast, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dayo Adeyanju, confirmed the outbreak, but assured residents that it was not Ebola. Even though the source of the epidemic has not been determined, Mr. Omole stated that many residents had blamed it on an “evil spiritual attack.” He stated that, in addition causing blindness, the unknown disease also caused victims’ tongues to swell abnormally, rendering the victims incapable of speech, prior to death within a few hours. Mr. Omole said many in the community saw the ailment as having “a spiritual cause,” adding that they believed it was beyond the control of state health officials. He added that the residents were hoping that some traditional healers would quickly come in to help. A young resident in the town said the gods in the community were angry because “some section of the shrine was recently destroyed and some sacred objects stolen by unknown people.” He said some worshipers of the deity and traditional priests were meeting to discover those behind the theft. Meanwhile, the state government has confirmed the outbreak of the “unknown disease,” adding that it was on top of the situation. In a broadcast on a state-owned radio station in Akure, the state capital, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Mr. Adeyanju, said the ravaging disease was not Ebola as some feared. The commissioner stated that health officials and equipment had been deployed to the community to curtail the spread of the strange disease.

The health commissioner disclosed that investigations had commenced to determine the cause and source of the strange epidemic stressing that blood samples from some victims have been taken to a laboratory in Lagos for tests.

Disease Worse than Ebola Infects and Kills People of Ondo State “We noticed the strange ailment Wednesday,” said Mr. Omole. “Several people lost their sight before they died instantly. “As at the last count, in the early hours of today (Thursday), more than 27 dead bodies were counted in the streets of Irele. “Unlike yesterday, people are now scared of carrying the bodies because of fear of infections. Some residents have fled the community for Ore town while others are planning to leave for Akure for total safety.” "
