PoliticsFederal Govt Ask Court To Send Dasuki Sambo (former NSA) To Jail by Papilo87(op): 12:41pm On Nov 24, 2015
The federal government, on Monday, asked an Abuja High Court to revoke the bail granted the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, on September 1, and also jail him pending his trial for illegal possession of firearms and corruption.

The Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Diri, made a fresh motion of notice to the court seeking the revocation of the bail granted Dasuki.

According to Diri, the motion was made in pursuant of section 169 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

Dasuki was undergoing investigation by a committee auditing the procurement of arms in the armed forces and defence sector from 2007 to date. The motion observed that the interim report of the probe panel indicated misappropriation of over $2billion. He said the investigation revealed further facts that require Dasuki’s presence.

Nigerian Woman Rejoicing on Twitter over Abubakar Audu's Death...

The U.S-based tweeter who goes by the name “Sugabelly” started the rant even before the death of Abubakar Audu, the APC candidate in Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Kogi State, was announced. She said she didn’t want him to win.

According to her, Audu’s children and their cousin took turns to rape her back in 2007. She quoted the words they uttered while raping her and claimed they must have thought she had forgotten about it but she hasn’t. She finished by wishing them death too……

Final prayers have been said as Audu goes home. He has now been laid in the grave as Imams offer prayers and sands poured into his grave amidst tears and sorrow.

A prophet had earlier promised to revive him to life.

Seems the Prophet is now in trouble.

There was mild drama between the prophet and members of the Audu family, who had refused to let him in. The youths of Ogbonicha broke the door to the room where Audu was laid to allow the prophet gain access.

However, the prophet failed to resurrect Audu, prompting the youths to go berserk, threatening to kill him.

Business19 Most Valuable Online Tech Startups In Nigeria by Papilo87(op): 2:07pm On Oct 19, 2015
This was a research first published on Nairabrains.com

Some time ago we did a post profiling Nigeria’s 17 most valuable startups . A lot has gone on since that time – startups have improved in valuation while some have simply regressed or even gone into comatose. Such is the startup world. Valued in millions of dollars today, dead tomorrow.

In our previous profile some of the biggest casualties include Kuluya the gaming company that much has not been heard of in recent times except in a post by Jason (of Spark that invested at a $2 million valuation) showing how Kuluya was not among their cashflow positive and promising startups, Easytaxi and more.

The new expanded list of most valuable online tech startup companies in Nigeria showcases 19 of the best and growing startups in Nigeria’s ecosystem. The fact that there is no $100 million valued company in this list shows that the online startup world in Nigeria has still lots of growing to do.

In researching and coming up with this list we have used various sources, poring through pages of funding information, industry insights and gleaning as much as we can about the value of each key startup under our horizon.

This is by no means final as we are always open to newer verifiable information regarding the worth of startups in Nigeria. The 19 most valuable startups in Nigeria in 2015 – not ordered by valuation;

Jumia

Jumia is one of the big two in Nigeria’s ecommerce retailing space. Initially floated by the German based Rocket Internet Group Jumia is an ecommerce giant operating in several African countries with each country run and managed by a seperate team of Managing directors. The company is reported to have raised a total of $211 million over three funding rounds.

Konga

Konga is the other of the big two and has positioned itself as not just an online shopping mall but also a marketplace where people can purchase varied items from hundreds of sellers. Konga has raised $78.5 million over 4 rounds of fund raising.

IrokoTV

This is probably the most publicised startup in Nigeria with lots of PR love. Started by Jason Njoku as a Youtube channel for collecting and showing Nigerian movies IrokoTV has pivoted to serving local movies and series via its own mobile app.

IrokoTV has raised millions of dollars from investors mainly Tiger Global and the last reported fundraise was for $8 million.

Paga

Founded by Tayo Oviosu, Paga says it currently serves over 3 million users and has over 8000 agents across the country. Paga is a payment company that allows convenient, fast and easy transaction through sms or online in a very secure way. This is because transactions require a pin code. One of the investors in Paga is Arunma Oteh, the former head of NSE. Paga also works in partnership with telecoms company such as MTN, glo, airtel and etisalat. So far, about 6.6 million transactions have been processed. Paga also recently raised $13 million at an undisclosed valuation.

Yes!!!
Business3 Ways To Get Rich In These Digital Times by Papilo87(op): 6:12pm On Sep 21, 2015
This was originally published on Nairabrains.com but I felt to make a summary for peeps here. To read the full version you can go here

Getting rich is no small joke. In fact it is not for everyone which is why lots of people never and will not get rich (in pure financial sense).

If you find yourself in Nigeria in these digital times however you stand a greater chance than your countrymen several decades ago. One reason – the internet has sort of tried to level the playing ground and lowered the entry level requirements to get rich. It is still very tough but the chances are slightly better now.

These days a young 20 something with a bit of strong vision, skills and some dose of luck (as always we will mention Father Luck won’t we?) he/she can create reasonable wealth utilising all the magic powers the internet provides.

3 Ways to do that...

1. Look for Problems Technology Can Solve if You are Sufficiently Skilled

Ours is not a very developed society so there are pretty several challenges and problems of life that can be solved with the creative use of technology. In the past decade technology has provided the youngest group of billionaires in the world many of them in their twenties. If you have a keen eye for spotting problems and challenges you can create valuable solutions to these challenges.

Technology has brought solutions to real estate challenges, education, buying and selling (e-commerce), academic research, communication/networking etc.

2. Turn Solutions into Products (That Can be Sold Over and Over to Millions of People)

It was several years ago that I read somewhere about how a business with products can be valued higher than businesses without products. In finding solutions to challenges around you if you want to be rich faster your solutions must be turned into products. That way you can have a business with value and that is sellable.

For instance if you live in a city or town with relative computer illiteracy you can set up a computer training business but you can even make it more profitable by creating and selling illustrative and easy to follow videos that teach people various aspects of computer usage and knowledge.

3. Become an Expert in a Big Enough Niche/Market

If you would rather not run a business managing others and coping with the all the challenges you can explore the option of being an expert in a niche big enough to make you reasonable income. From photography to writing, creative design, programming, digital marketing etc you can create substantial income for yourself working hard to build a reputation as an expert in a niche.

Education7 Things We Hated Most About NYSC by Papilo87(op): 2:04pm On Sep 17, 2015
National Youth Service was that time most peeps I knew in school looked up to but for myself and a few radical thinking friends we saw it as a massive waste of 1 year. A year that one could have used for an early start on this rat race (you know this race of survival to make it that starts right after graduation?).

So off we went to serve the fatherland and it was just as myself and my friends thought – a complete waste of time.

If you didn’t like the idea of going on youth service it could be for some reasons but here are the things we hated most about the NYSC

1. Too Much Paperwork

2. The Saintly Dress Mode

3. You Must Teach Except You are a Medical Doctor

Imagine asking an Engineer graduate with zero patience to go teach a bunch of students who were taught by their teacher in the local Yoruba language. How the hell does one do that?

4. The Camp Infrastructure and Health Risks

5. The Queues

6. The Food

Hey! The only thing I ever managed to collect during the 3 weeks camp was the occasional tea, bread and egg for breakfast. I went mostly for the egg. So each morning I waited for the rushers to go and then confirm from them on their way back if egg was on the menu.

‘Egg dey today?’

If the answer was no I skipped the ritual for that day. Lunch and Dinner? I never went near the camp food for those two.

PoliticsHow To Know When It Is Time To Quit Your Job by Papilo87(op): 5:32pm On Sep 07, 2015
We have this misconception that once we land a job, all the hard work ends, thanks to the endless time it takes to actually get a job in today’s competitive job market. But, honestly, the hard work never really ends especially when we’re faced with the dilemma of figuring out if we still like our jobs. If you are like me, you’ll feel guilty just at the thought of quitting your current position for another one, but sometimes it just can’t be helped, despite all our perfect plans and dreams. Your health and life can actually be affected in more ways than you can imagine if you remain in a position that is making you very unhappy.

Here are some signs that would help you determine if your head is no longer in your job, if you recognize any of the signs, it might be time for you to hand in your two-week notice.

1. You Don’t Look Forward to Work Anymore

I’ll like to start by saying that we all have our off days and hey, that only makes us human; those days when we would prefer to at stay home curled up on the bed and go on a Series marathon rather than head to the office. But if you wake up every single morning wanting to cry, scream and pull out your hair at the thought of going to work, let be the first to tell you, you might be falling out of love with your current position and that simply means you need to quit. Life is too short to keep living a life of denial.

I mean, it’s time we came to the realization that we need to do meaningful work that satisfies us and that we look forward to because if we don’t, then what’s the point? We’ve got only one life to live and we should never spend even a day doing something we hate doing. Of course, there are days when we will hate some aspects of our jobs or even feel like stabbing that annoying boss. We really can’t love every single part of our jobs, trust me, there are always parts of a job that you won’t love, whether it’s organizing your thoughts and putting them in a spreadsheet form when you are a messy person or attending meetings when you’re a complete introvert. But completely hating your job is a no no. Do yourself a favor, make yourself happy and look for another position that you will love more.

2. Every Single Day stresses You Out

I can boldly say that work-related stress is today, the most common type of stress that there is. We hear daily news about people expiring as a result of heart attacks due to incredibly stressful jobs. Of course it is totally expected to we can to experience stress from time to time. Sometimes we make an innocent mistake like forgetting to do something and we end up scrambling to save a project, or we have one of those days when every little thing just goes incredibly wrong. But when you begin to feel like you’re in a constant state of stress every single day of the week, you tried every all the stress killers to no avail, then, it’s detrimental to your health, both in the long and short-term.

When we are tensed and under stress, we tackle challenges with a fight or flight approach and we experience this with anything from a beating heart, to having trouble breathing. Therefore, being in a state of stress regularly is incredibly dangerous for us. Even if you may never have a heart attack, you will still be unhealthy. Stress also leads to mental conditions such as depression and you might also notice yourself getting way too many colds. That’s because your immune system is affected too due to stress, which in turn, leads to frequent illnesses.

3. You Can Never Sleep

Insomnia is a sign of stress. You begin finding it difficult to fall asleep and it is becoming a regular occurrence, then you need to think about whether it’s your job that is causing this. It is very wrong to spend the entire night tossing and turning, unable to stop worrying about work. No job I repeat, no job is worth sacrificing your health, which includes getting enough rest every night. Without adequate sleep you won’t be able to think properly not to talk of concentrating, this will in turn, affect your job performance in negative ways.

The sad thing about insomnia is that it is a vicious cycle. You will start worrying over the fact that you can’t sleep, which will make it even harder for you to let go and slip into slumber, which will only make the same thing happen all over again the next night and the next. Even if you haven’t realized that job stress is getting to you, you’ll definitely notice when you are not getting enough sleep. Now if it is an isolated incident, then it’s okay to have a period of a month or so when we are focusing on something big at work and find ourselves less rested than usual, and it goes back to normal, then don’t worry about it. But if it’s happening all the time, it’s a surefire sign that your job has to go.

4. Calling in Sick When You’re Really Not

Do you have the slightest idea how many employees stay home from work every single day under the guise of sickness? According to the American Institute of Stress, a whooping figure of 1 million people call in sick or stressed on a daily basis. Surprised right? That’s a lot of stressed-out people if you ask me.

If you find yourself in that place where you are so unhappy at the thought of going to work that you start saying you’ve come down with a bug or something and start staying home a lot, you need to give your notice. Personally, I think psychologically draining to pretend to be sick in bed when you just can’t bring yourself to go to the office today. For someone like me, I will just spend the entire day feeling guilty for staying home, worrying about all the work that I am not getting done, and absolutely dreading having to go back the next day.

And in all fairness, no company benefits from an employee that hates their job so much they fake being sick. You will be much less productive if you tow this line, and the productivity of the entire office would gradually begin to suffer because you’re not there when people need you. Your boss and even co-workers will start to notice and catch on. So you might as well be honest with yourself: isn’t it time to leave?

5. You Can’t Stop Thinking About Quitting

Now this is a crucial part of the equation. Happy and satisfied employees hardly ever think about quitting their jobs. Okay, not so true, they probably do think about it after an irritating talk with their boss, but they’re not serious about it. If the thought of leaving crosses your mind whenever you think about work, it’s a sign that you should just do it already. You will only become unhappier if you know you want to leave but stay instead.

It’s totally normal if you hate your job sometimes (I do too, especially when I think of the traffic I face every day) or don’t feel like going to the office every once in a while. But it’s wrong and not normal if you completely dislike your position, fake sickness, and actually get sick and tired all the time.

Be honest with yourself and if you recognize any of these signs, I think you know when to quit your job, so don’t hesitate. Do the right thing for your career and your health and find another job that will keep you happy and healthy.

Do you recognize any of these signs? Do you think that it is time to quit your job? Do you want to nail that dream job? Or are you looking for a change in career? Join Ngcareers now; something cool is coming up for people with 3+ years experience that want a cool way to change jobs

BusinessYou Can't Believe The Earning Potentials In Cashew Business by Papilo87(op): 11:16am On Aug 27, 2015
Agriculture is the next oil in Nigeria, if you have not yet considered Agriculture as a business, then this news might convince you to take a look. According to The National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), export of cashew nuts from the 2015 planting season had contributed about N50 billion to the economy. Who knows cashew nuts could bring in as much as $250 million USD! The interesting part is when you compare this figure 2013 and 2014 which contributed about N24 billion ($120 million USD); this shows over 100% increase in contribution to GDP.

The interesting part of this report is that demand for cashew nuts is increasing. According to Mr Sotonye Anga, the association’s spokesman:

“For 2015, because of the significant growth in pricing and increased demand for Nigeria’s cashew, what the cashew sector contributed to the Nigerian economy is about N50 billion.

That is an improvement in the export of raw cashew. Whereas in 2013 and 2014, the sub-sector contributed about N24 billion. This year, having made the N50 billion mark, the global expectation for the next season is going to increase. This figure could be more but because of export through our porous borders we could not account for those ones,”.

The price of raw cashew nut per metric ton recorded an increase, selling at N170, 000 ($853 USD) during the 2015 season.

The association continues to urge farmers to comply with high degree quality control procedure. According to Mr. Anga, Brazil is currently having huge crop shortages which means that Nigeria cannot compromise its cashew quality.

Currently, Nigeria produces about 140 metric tons of cashew nuts per annum. However, with more cashew plantations were being commissioned, especially in Kuje area of Abuja, this figure is expected to increase significantly.

LOL. Why so pessimistic? The article actually pointed out that the best way is to try and get as little as possible from each family and friend you can. Though I agree that for some people who are surrounded by majorly cash strapped family and friends it will be easier for camel to pass through the eye of the needle
Business10 Unconventional Ways To Raise Money For A Business Idea by Papilo87(op): 10:15am On Aug 13, 2015
Raising money is very hard; almost nobody wants to give you their money. How then does a young, struggling person get funds to start a new business or invest in a promising business?

This article will look at ways and methods I and a few of my colleagues have applied over the past few years to raise money for our various business ventures. Warning! The ideas here are not your usual run of the mill advice; it requires bold action and faith to raise funds.

1. Donation List (Family & Friends)

If you need N100,000 to start a business what do you think is the easiest way to get it fromyour family and friends.

Definitely not by asking one or two persons to cough out N50,000 each. To raise this amount from them you have to come up with a way that makes it easy for them to dash you little sums each and in the end you get what you want or something close to it.

Make a list of all friends and family members you know who can afford to dash you a small amount (eg N5,000 and start going after them one by one. If your persuading skills are good you would soon have your capital.

2. Competitions

Business Plan and idea competitions could help you start your business if you win. Most times a substantial cash prize plus support comes with such competitions. Find as many as you can around and enter.

3. Gamble

This may sound weird but hold on. If the money you have is too little and you are an adept follower of any sports maybe football you can make small bets on any of the numerous sports betting websites to see if you can win and build your capital incrementally.

Of all our tips this is probably the craziest and riskiest so thread with caution. You must be very knowledgeable, do plenty of research and find a reputable bet company that pays winners without stories.

However don’t take our words for it. You could lose all the little money you have. Best to divide it and use only a very small portion. Good thing is you can start small and don’t be greedy

4. Fire Sale

Sell anything you don’t need and you’ll be surprised how much you can raise. Many rich entrepreneurs today started and raised money for their first business by doing a fire sale – selling off anything that should be sold.

5. Apply for Grants

if you do not need too much money to start or invest in your business you may want to look at the option of applying for grants. First start searching and compiling a list of foundations, government and non-governmental organisations etc that give grants to young entrepreneurs. Be sure to check if your business falls within their area of focus. Organisations like the Tony Elumelu Foundation offer grants to small scale enterprises. You can do your research and start applying.

Career12 Types Of Bosses And How To Manage Them by Papilo87(op): 2:25pm On Aug 12, 2015
This was first published by Ngcareers

Alongside salaries, deadlines, annoying colleagues and stress, bosses are one of the things that make you scream TGIF!!! In my life, I have seen and heard about different bosses, ranging from amazing to aggravating. Anyways, today, I will identify 12 shades of bosses and how you can relate with each of these characters (if your boss happens to be like one).

The Machine

This kind of boss is characterized by an empty desk, no family pictures and no emotions. They are all about business, all the time. I am not saying she’s not human (yes, it has to be a she, because you’d hardly find a man who is that stringent). This boss is the sworn enemy of fun, levity, and emotion, The machine would rather you just get to work and that means, all the time. While it is nice having someone who drives you to do your best, it would also be nice to feel some sort of emotional connection with the person from time to time, right?

Solution: You’ll probably have to conceal your own feelings and buckle down to her schedule. It may not sound like a lot of fun, but on flip side, she’ll teach you discipline and efficiency. Try making friends with your co-workers. They’re almost certainly as frustrated as you are! Inside jokes and friendly chit-chat can make the day seem brighter.

The Screamer

This kind of boss is characterized by a high-pitch voice, a superiority complex, and belief that others are wrong. The screamer is of the opinion that he will get his way if he raises his voice to an unconscionable level: the higher the volume, the higher the commitment. The screamer is a very edgy character by nature, he doesn’t like to dwell on ‘any’ reason behind a problem, but instead takes solace from the fact that he has scolded someone, and hence, he has prevented the mistake from re-occurring. Many of you may have certainly come across such bosses.

Solution: All in all, screamers just want to know that they’re being heard, and they want recognition. If you can get along with your screamer boss, and gain his respect and trust, perhaps you can help guide him to lower tones.

The Scaremonger Boss

This kind of boss is characterized by breeding fear and uncertainty in the minds of subordinates. People would scramble to do what a “fearsome” boss says because they’re afraid of him and what he might do. This in turn actually encourages him to dish out further intimidation. He always has a threat for any failed assignment, and he constantly follows through with that threat in order to keep his employees in line.

Solution: do what you are supposed to in the right way and at the right time. Oh and yeah, develop a thick skin to his threats because fear has a way of making you do the wrong thing despite your right intentions

The Manipulator Boss

This boss is characterized by his Machiavellian ways. Also known as the deceitful boss, Mr. Manipulator is very intelligent and if you ask me, one of the most dangerous. The manipulator boss is extremely focused, motivated, and always has a secret (evil) plan. He looks at the people around him as a means to an end. People he touches or runs over on the way to the top are casualties of his quest and he writes off without a backward glance.

Solution: If you work for a manipulator, watch your back! Your best bet is to be open and honest with him. Don’t ever make the mistake of believing that anything he does is for your benefit.

The Pal

This boss is characterized by Hugs, warm smiles and high-fives. The Pal wants to be your friend, not your boss. Sadly for him you’ve already got friends and you don’t want to hang out with him anyway. From “dry gist of his glorious years” to unfunny jokes that you’ve just got to laugh at (or else!) The Pal has a way of making fun into a chore. And please don’t get me started on his habit of trying to start questionable relationships with subordinates.

Solution: Laugh at his funnier jokes, but don’t stoop to laughing at everything that comes out of his mouth in the name of a joke. Say a polite ‘no thanks’ to all the invitations you can, and keep your own interactions with him on an extremely professional level. Protect yourself with a thick layer of decorum and common sense.

This was first published on NairaBrains.com, a Nigerian blog that publishes resources, ideas on business, technology and interesting people

That Nigeria is a deeply religious country is not in doubt. However whether that translates to our character as a people is up for debate as a lot of people will argue that our deep religiousity has not impacted on the conduct of both leaders and followers.

The entrenched place of religion in the lives of Nigerians mean that the men who hold sway in some of the religious sects command a high level of influence. Their words alone determine or influence the action of hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of people. In fact some of these religious leaders hold so much influence on the masses that their words are believed verbatim.

So we distil down to bring you the list of the most influential rabbis, ayatollahs, canons, preachers etc who command the most influence and have the most following

Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar IV, Sultan of Sokoto

The Sultan is the numero uno of the Islamic world in Nigeria and heads the approximately 74 million Muslims in Nigeria.

As head of the Nigerian National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Sultan Abubakar is the leader of the Qadiriyya sufi order and the spiritual leader of the Muslims in Nigeria.

Enoch Adeboye, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)

Enoch Adeboye, fondly called Daddy GO, by the numerous followers of his church, is the Senior Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. After being appointed General Overseer of the church, taking over from Papa Akindayomi in 1981 Adeboye oversaw the growth and rise of the church to its current status of the church with arguably the most number of branches and stations scattered across all nooks and crannies of the country.

David Oyedepo, Living Faith Church Worldwide

Oyedepo is the founder and presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide (popularly known as Winners Chapel). Seen as one of the most powerful preachers in the country Oyedepo has, for some years, been top on our list of richest Pastors in Nigeria.

T.B. Joshua, Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN)

Temitope Balogun Joshua is the leader and founder of The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) and also runs the popular Emmanuel TV. He has been recognised as one of Africa’s most influential people by Pan African publication ‘The Africa Reports’ and is a recipient of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).

He also appeared in our list of wealthiest pastors in Nigeria. Despite having only one branch in Ghana aside his massive synagogue in Lagos, Nigeria T.B. Joshua’s influence spans across many parts of Africa and the world due mainly to his Emmanuel TV network.

Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, Nigeria Islamic Movement

Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky is a Shi’a Muslim cleric in Nigeria, and head of Nigeria’s Islamic Movement. Sheikh Ibraheem has been described as the de facto leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and was jailed several times on charges of sedition by successive Nigerian regimes in the 1980s and 1990s.

Ayo Oritsejafor, Word of Life Bible Church

Ayodele Joseph Oritsejafor is the founding and Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, located in Warri, southern Nigeria. He makes this list by virtue of his positions as President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Pastor Ayodele was at the peak of his influence during the immediate past tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan where his position as CAN President saw him very close to the seat of Power.

CareerDo These To Boost Your Chances 15 Minutes Before An Interview by Papilo87(op): 12:29pm On Jul 28, 2015
Interviews are like examinations.

We’ve all been there before. We know that the few minutes before the interview starts can be one of the most mentally and emotionally gruelling moments we would ever encounter. Examinations are even better in some respects. At least, you have an idea of what you’ll write and you won’t be facing anybody to talk. But here, you’re relying basically on guts feeling.

I have seen able bodied candidates going jellylike just before they are ushered into the interview room. I had literally melted, myself, on several occasions. The sweaty palms and the heartbeats that threaten to rip your chest apart are signs of a diminished confidence.
This poses a grave danger to your performance at the interview. It presents you as a caged, bottled and suffocating candidate begging for the mercy of the interviewer. Once your confidence has taken such a big bashing, marketing yourself to the interviewer becomes an almost lost battle.

Bring Back the Winning Memories

Can you recollect those times you did things that made you feel capable and respected? It could be as simple as giving some constructive advice to someone who came back to tell you how helpful the advice was or it could be as grand as when you successfully lead a team on a project. At that time, you felt on top of your world – reliable, resourceful and effective.
Bring back the memories. They prime you for the interview ahead. They puff up your confidence.

Don’t Be Late. Don’t be too Early

Assuming you’re the best candidate for any interview on earth, I rejoice with you. However, the day you’ll know that the mighty do fall is the day you arrive late to an interview. You will be rattled out of your cage and you will be left completely out of steam.
So, don’t be late to an interview.

Don’t rehearse. Go Over Your Notes

Ok. It’s fine that you practise your delivery but let it stop just before you leave your house or office for the interview venue. One thing you must know is that interviewers know when you’re sounding programmed and robotic. Lest I forget, your chances of making silly mistakes increase when you’re bent on rehearsing into the interview room.

Career5 Superb Ways To Get Noticed By Any Company You Want To Work For by Papilo87(op): 8:58am On Jul 16, 2015
This is a well received blog post on the Ngcareers blog

That the job market is overcrowded is an obvious statement. A lot of people, whether looking for their first job or looking to get a better one than their present job, are on the look out for opportunities.

And the worst part?

Everyone is looking to get hired by the big, established firms in their industry. And the problem is too many people are looking to get the attention of the recruiters for these big firms. Even the not so big but ok companies also do look a lot of consideration from anyone looking to get hired. As long as the pay is good or the organisation is known for a good work culture and working condition.
So in brief – The competition is stiff!

How Do You Get Ahead of All the Noise and Get Noticed by the HR Managers of Your Target Companies?

We’ll walk through practical steps you can take to stand up, get noticed and get hired.

Get Your Acts Together

You have to be deliberate; like an army general going to war you should plan and leave very little to chance. It starts with becoming coordinated in terms of what you want to achieve. What sort of work do you want to be considered for in the company/organisation? How Much do you know about the organisation?
You basically should start your homework. The more you know about the task at hand the better your chances of winning.

Start to Create the Right Presence and Pool of Information About You

While a lot of people will send in CVs and drop unsolicited application letters you should tow a different, not so obvious path. This starts with building the right sort of image you envision for yourself. List all your social media profiles and start a through professional makeover (or surgery if you like). It’s of no use if you succeed in getting the attention of the right HR executives and one look at your web and social profiles sends the door shutting against you.

Starting from your career profiles to your social media handles draw up an articulate summary of who you are, the skills you have, the work achievements you have made and your passion for the types of job you are interested in.
To show you are a valuable resource and talent in your discipline you will need to start getting visible, publishing well researched insights at the right places. Using all social tools at your disposal (including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Online Communities and Forums etc) you can start engaging with others in similar line of interest. You do not even need to have a blog; as occassionally you can get your opinions published in respectable blogs if they are good enough.

Jobs/Vacancies5 Tips To Turn Your Internship Into Full Time Job by Papilo87(op): 3:28pm On Jul 09, 2015
culled from the Ngcareers Blog - a career, workplace and professional devt blog by Ngcareers.com

During industrial attachment and NYSC many lucky interns find themselves in companies where they had wished all their lives that they’d work for. For many, even though that they have the proverbial foot in the door of such a firm, they do not really realize how close they are to getting a full time job there and many end up messing it all up.

It is like walking kilometers in a desert in search of water, getting close to an oasis and walking away without realizing that the water they are looking for is staring them in the face. Many of those never get another chance of coming close to such firms in a lifetime. Below are few tips that may help in turning internships into full time jobs.

1. Distinguish Yourself.

Usually interns don’t feel pressured to go to work early or do much work, but as an ambitious intern with a mission you should go to work early and focus on your responsibilities. If your manager is too hesitant to give you any responsibility, ask for it; because if you don’t get given meaningful and important tasks how then are you going to prove to them how useful you can be as a potential full time team member. Let your sincerity, diligence and character convince them. Talk to the boss about the projects they do, the skill they appreciate the most, ask him how you’d learn it. Let them see seriousness in you from day one.

2. Create Good Relationship with Other Employees.

This right here is to your advantage. When you have good rapport with employees, they are more likely to volunteer certain internal information that would place you a feet ahead of your colleagues when it comes to employment related matters. There are many interns who ended up getting a permanent position in the company where they did their internship mostly because they got vital tips on how to get hired by top management.

3. Ask for Career Advice From Your Supervisor and Senior Colleagues.

By simply asking your supervisor to advise you concerning your career options, you are indirectly telling him that you are smart and would like to work in the firm. Many senior employees would be more than glad to answer this question and if you have played your card well and your supervisor is on your side, he will begin to mention and recommend you in the right places. Senior colleagues can also hint you on people that got employed after their internship programs (now you know those people, you can actually walk up to them and ask for tips on how to do same). If you build the right relationships with others at the firm you can actually use to your advantage the ‘insider information’ that thousands of others seeking to work at the firm do not have access to.

4. Go Easy on the Office Internet.

We all know that the internet can be addictive and that everyone needs it but using six out of the eight work hours stuck on an office PC doing this or that online is totally unacceptable; in fact were you in the HR manager’s position, you wouldn’t have hired yourself. So go easy on the internet, you are there to learn, learn all you can, add value where you can, work hard (yes it is time to work hard) and you might be well on your way to getting that dream job after you internship.

5. Don’t Let Money Stop You.

Many of these companies make it clear that they don’t pay interns. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are not interested, many are interested in serious ones, since the unserious ones would turn back once they learn that they’ll not be getting paid.
I learned of a man this morning that was even asked to pay some money to be accepted as an intern. Painfully he paid the money and began learning. He worked for one year without pay and when he got finished, he was hired. Now he’s like a project manager in the same firm where he wasn’t paid for a year. If they refuse to pay, it is okay, just learn and do your best, you’d be glad you did.

Every advice posted on blog.ngcareers.com is distilled from the original Nigerian viewpoint. Several young people actually get job offers not from applying but from being found by the people in those organisations.

First consider the fact that over the past 5 years it has become easier to get the attention of company executives as more and more people come online. This is advice for the very few and of course not something everybody can do. It takes ambition.

Make a List of Important and Relevant Persons in the Organisation (easier if it is a small or medium organisation)

Remember we said this is a deliberate action. This means you do all you can to place yourself in a better situation to win. You plan carefully and execute methodically.

Now you are done with cleaning up your image on the web to present a professional look you move on to finding out who you need to attract to your profile. Every company has people responsible for finding new potential hires. With the tools at your disposal you can start looking for the persons who have a say in recruiting new hires. This involves recruiters as well since many big firms outsource their recruitment to agencies and consulting firms.

Start Connecting Smartly

It is one thing to have the information on the right Managers, CEOs, HR Executives of your target companies and it is another (much more difficult thing) to connect smartly with them and get their attention without appearing like a nuisance.
Start by connecting from the point of a) giving value and b) stimulating thought
When you try to see things from the perspective of the person whose attention you are hoping to get you begin to come up with ideas and information that will get them to pause and look you up and possibly reach out. Things like politely asking them to check out an insightful blog post you wrote or pointing out an interesting link to something you read and know will be of value/interest to them etc will give you a better chance than outright sending them a message asking to be employed.

Dig Deep; Find out Ways to Help the Organisation Meet and Surpass Their Goals

If you are ever able to do this and convey your ideas to the right people in that organisation while still not appearing to ask them to employ you most likely they will approach you. The key lies in utilising your skills and knowledge to look into ways to provide more value to an organisation. And then convey these to the right persons in the organisation free of charge without making any request.
In otherwords; engage, provide value and never ask for anything in return.
And watch the magic happen!
