FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE UNION In respect of the announcement of resumption yesterday certain questions were raised which necessitated the following clarifications. After the closure, certain associations and personalities were out of their concern to stymie the apparent consequential effects of the closure which management was scheming to explore such as merging of two sessions among others, waded in to mediate for peaceful resolution. However, our conditions for peace are as enunciated at the Tuesday's meeting. As at the dialogue on Tuesday among NANS Zone D, the S/Union and the management, six(6) demands were tabled which are: i. IMMEDIATE resumption ii. downward review of the fees. iii. extension of normal registration as against current threat of late registration. iv. instalmental payment, work study programmes, scholarships, etc. v. non-victimisati on vi. November mobilisation for NYSC. It should be noted that in the history of OAU the moment struggle against increment in fees leads to closure, several consequences follow and as such the above comprehensive demands and certain strategies are being presented & employed to prevent management's anti- union and anti-students plots normally invoked in times like this. As a matter of clarification, in a varsity system, the above demands can only be met at various layers of the management to wit the DSA, the senate, the administrative body and the Council. In other words, while senate can reopen school being the body which earlier on closed the varsity and/or approve final year students' results for NYSC mobilisation, it is the Council, on/without the recommendation of the administrative body, which can reverse or reduce the current regime of fees having ratified same in the first instance. The senate does not have the power in this instance. Thus, the fact that the senate does not pronounce on the review is not an issue! The demand for immediate resumption is to thwart the management's unholy plan to merge two sessions, a move that will deny thousands of promising students admission to their dream varsity. This demand was met yesterday by the senate which HAS THE POWER to reopen the school being the one which closed it. It should also be noted that demand for mobilisation for NYSC in November has also been met at the administrative level as circular has been issued to various faculties to submit the immediate past final year results for subsequent senate approval. For now two of the demands have been met, remaining others. The one which is most significant and symbolic to us is the review! Our mediators are aware of this and we have their assurance and we await pronouncement on this in the coming weeks. Great Ife! Pls massively re-share this for proper orientation and reassurance of our students to prevent apostle of doom and mischief-makers from exploiting the current situation just as they did during the late registration threat. At least, we have now been proved right on the matter. Until further development, accept our best assurances... La lucha sigue! Signed by Bamidele Oludare PRO Shittu Olatayo Gen-Sec.
