Education › Re: Nairaland Interschool Debate:: FUNAAB VS IBADAN POLY. WINNER: IBADAN POLY. by papindinho(m): 10:13am On May 31, 2015 |
pseudonomer: School: FUNAAB Every universities has their own standards , the Post-UTME can be a way for some universities to test their prospective students if they will be fit enough to survive the school workload. For example, JAMB exempt some science students from taking Mathematics in their UTME, Which is always part of their workload in the first year, the post-UTME is another test if the prospective candidate have the required knowledge of Mathematics to survive in the school.
Another case is the Post-UME screening examination conducted by the University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti (TUNEDIK), particularly in essay writing, exposed inadequacies in most of the candidates. A total of 500 candidates were randomly selected for this study from five departments of the three foundation faculties of education, science and information technology and arts, social and management sciences. 200 out of the 500 candidates (40%) scored 200 marks and above in JAMB, 125 candidates (25%) scored 190-199, also 125 candidates (25%) again scored 180-189 and 50 candidates (10%) scored 170-179 in JAMB. Ironically, only 87 out of the 200 candidates (43.5%), who scored 200 and above in JAMB, passed the Post-UME essay while the remaining 113 candidates (56.5%) scored below 40%. Without screening, candidates who scored 200 marks and above in JAMB would have been automatically admitted on merit, whereas many of those candidates in the score ranges of 190-199 and 180-189 did better in the Post-UME essay.
@bolded should be something like "every university has its own standard(s)" I think. By the way, both schools did well. Citing cases like that gives you a PLUS and I didn't expect the second speaker to repeat what the first speaker had said (FUNAAB). That was like two or more paragraphs. |

A note of correction to both schools.
I think one of the judges in one of the just concluded rounds mentioned the need to write the full meaning of acronyms. Pseudonomer gave one full meaning i.e. Post-UTME and shunned the rest. The others didn't even blink at it.
This forum is accessed by many foreigners who are oblivious of JAMB, SSCE, et al..... It's advisable you take note of that. |

Obinoscopy: Nice presentations guys. You guys did good. I certainly learned something today. Actually I had thought "Political Decamping" wasn't a debatable topic, but I now know better .
Microflux Nice piece, however there were several hitches here and there: 1. Inappropriate use of certain words: In your quest to show us your vocabulary proficiency, you ended up using some words that were inappropriate in certain sentences. An example is "...period they are imminent in office." The word imminent is inappropriate in that sentence.
2. Use of Bible to prove you point: There's nothing wrong in using bible instances or quoting bible verses. However it's advisable not to dwell on them or use them as your main argument premise. This is because Religion is based on faith and not fact.
3. Spellings and Grammatical Errors: There were many repeated spelling errors. Most notably was that of "permanent"
4. Examples/Illustrations: You didn't spice up your writing with much examples/instances.
Nevertheless, I still say weldone. You did great.
Danjuma827 Danjuma you had good command of English. Love the examples and instances you gave. However I frown at the use of the "hmmmm" word. This is a formal platform. Also I think your piece is too short. Microflux's was 971, yours could have been in that range too.
All in all, you were superb.
Miracy I tried several times, albeit unsuccessfully, to find the loopholes in your piece. Weldone Miracy, you've done OAU proud. However your piece is too short. You could have elaborated more on your points. kudos sir... |

boxypane: Not at all my eloquent Colleague, let us not dissect the heart because the head feels feverish. Democracy(in igbo) is well defined to suit "Decamp", whatever part of the nation we hail from, the party doesn't matter as long as we have the interest of the nation at heart. If it pdp doesn't suit my agenda for country n self, and I feel APC has that platform for my furure analogy and achievement, it is only imperative for me to fullfil my goals by choice of decamping. lol at the dissection analogy.. Coast cleared |

Miracy dear, you did a nice job there but I would like you to note this little adjustment in the inital part of your writing.
You wrote "In politics, it is believed that whoever aspires to hold a public office do so because he/she wants to improve the quality of life of his people."
The modern trend in English language has directed more effort at desexing some words used in favour of the male gender. Now, a look at that would suppose you to have written that part thus: "In politics, it is believed that whoever aspires to hold a public office do so because THEY want to improve the quality of life of THEIR people."
Nice one dear... Happy Sunday |
