The chairman of ASUU chapter at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), in Ondo State, Dr. Busuyi Mekusi, insisted that his members were still part of the ongoing national strike, and debunked the reports about resuming lectures. Dr. Mekusi stressed that the University Chapter of ASUU was in support of the action of its national body, signed the appropriate statemet on November 21, 2013, Thursday: "We, the executives of ASUU, AAUA chapter, wish to dissociate ourselves from the purported resumption of academic activities in the university, as its members are still part of the ongoing national strike by the Union. "Members should therefore, disregard any pullout to abandon the struggle, and be steadfast until the present position is reviewed by NEC. The Union also wants to make it abundantly clear that it would resist every tyrannical propensity to intimidate and harass its members". It would be recalled that in a statement issued and signed by its Registrar, R.B Olotu, the school had ordered its students to resume for the second semester on November 25th, 2013, thereby boycotting the nationwide strik |
The University of Lagos has denied that it has pulled out on the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The strike begun on July 1st, due to the inability of the Federal Government to execute an agreement it reached with ASUU in 2009. According to earlier reports, UNILAG allegedly fixed a new date for its postponed 2nd semester examination regardless of the ongoing strike. Our correspondent gathered that the strike started a few days to UNILAG’s second semester examinations. The report, our correspondent learnt, was convincing because UNILAG was part the universities that voted in favour of the suspension of the five-month-old strike. The speculation has it that UNILAG would commence its outstanding examination for all students before the Christmas break. “The proposed exam as reported will be starting on the 9th of December and end on the 24th of December. We want to advise all students of the UNILAG to check it out to confirm,” an unconfirmed report had earlier said. Apart from the speculation on UNILAG, some universities have reportedly started pulling out of ASUU strike. Specifically, Adamawa University has pulled- out. Adamawa branch of ASUU, was said to have confronted ASUU national body without due process. However, a top management officer in UNILAG said the university does not have any plan to pull out of ASUU. The source said: “We are not pulling out. That is not possible. UNILAG is one of the strongest branches of ASUU and we will not disappoint. We have plans on ground to write the second semester exam, but that is after the strike might have been called off.” When our correspondent visited the university, there was no sign that examinations will commence soon. It was observed that dust and cob-webs have taken over most of the classes. |
Kai God wen strike don almost finish or Na ASUP U WAN talk |

There are indications that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria may end its four-month old strike on Saturday, November 16. About 120 chapters of the union have voted in support of the decision to end the strike at their various congresses held in their institutions. However, the National Executive of the body has not ratified the decision to end the strike. A Pro-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Senator Effiong Bob, urged ASUU to end the strike in honour of Late Fetus Iyayi, a former president of the union. Senator Bob, who was at the residence of the late professor pointed out that Late Iyayi died while trying to resolve the issue. “ASUU Should call of the strike so that both the union members and students can come and give him the last respect he deserves during his funeral,” he said. Late Iyayi died on Tuesday, November 12, in an auto crash on his way to Kano for a meeting of the union. In a meeting with the leadership of the union, President Goodluck Jonathan had agreed to provide 1.1 trillion Naira (about 6.9 billion dollars) in the next five years and the balance of 62 billion Naira (about 390 million dollars) and allowance to each university. The union had embarked on a nationwide strike on July 1 suspending all academic activities. Source channelsnews |

The next move of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not yet clear, even after its zonal chapters have held congress meetings to deliberate on a new offer from the federal government. The union’s National Executive Council (NEC) is expected to hold a decisive meeting tomorrow to make its final position known. Following a marathon meeting with President Jonathan last week, the ASUU leadership had briefed the zonal coordinators on the outcome and consequently directed the local branches to organise congress meetings to vote for or against the suspension of the four-month-old strike. But reports coming from the Jos chapter of ASUU yesterday said the lecturers voted in favour of continuation of the strike on the grounds that the meeting between the union and Jonathan did not achieve anything concrete. The Jos decision was taken at a referendum where 194 voted for the strike to be continued while 80 voted in favour of a suspension. Those who spoke in favour of the strike to continue wondered why it should be called off on the basis of pleas and verbal promises by the President Jonathan when the government is allegedly reputed for not honouring agreements. LEADERSHIP further gathered that those rooting for the suspension of the strike spoke passionately on the need to consider the impact of the strike on students and the gesture from Jonathan who met personally with ASUU leaders and pleaded with them to suspend the strike. Dr David Jangkham, chairman of the University of Jos chapter, after announcing the results of the voting, said the national body which would collate the referendum from various chapters will come up with a stand on whether the strike would be suspended or sustained. The ASUU congress, University of Ibadan, failed to reach a resolution to end the strike. Although journalists were barred from covering the congress, feelers have it that members asked their leadership to commit the president to signing the resolution of FG/ ASUU meeting held last week and include a non-victimisation clause so as not to allow any contentious issue to be generated afterwards about the agreement. Also speaking in a solidarity appearance at the congress, former minister of petroleum Prof. Tam David West yesterday warned that only justice in all sectors can stop any form of strike in Nigeria. He said, “ASUU will continue to go on strike as long as there is injustice in the system. I am not congratulating the president. How can I commend him for a wasted five months? This should be condemned. You must sign what you will implement. I am saying that I will continue to support ASUU struggles.” As at the time of filing this report, members of the ASUU at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, were still holding the chapter’s congress, but sources close to the union confirmed that members had already opted for the suspension of the industrial action. Similarly, other members of the union from various other campuses including Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso; Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST, Port Harcourt; and Kogi State University, Ayingba, told LEADERSHIP that they were optimistic that the strike would be called off on Thursday after the NEC might have met between tomorrow evening and Thursday morning. Meanwhile, arrangements have been concluded for tomorrow’s crucial NEC meeting of the ASUU at the Bayero University, Kano, where the protracted strike embarked upon by the teachers’ union is expected to be called off. Investigations by LEADERSHIP revealed that some of the union’s chapters’ leaders were already moving to the venue of the meeting as at yesterday following the conclusion of their congresses earlier in the day. The chairman of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, chapter of the union, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, told LEADERSHIP that he was already on his way to Kano when the newspaper called to know the outcome of the chapter’s congress. But efforts to speak to the chairman of the NEC’s host university, Dr A. Baffa, was unsuccessful as calls put through to his mobile line were unanswered. Incidentally, some university students are already getting set to return to campuses and have appealed to ASUU not to dampen their spirits. Some students, however, said that the timing of the suspension could pose a challenge. One of the students who sought anonymity said, “I’ll be glad if the strike is called off, because it is long overdue but there might be a problem with the timing. There is every possibility that once we get back to school, we’d be rushed through the first semester and might find ourselves writing exams when we are hardly prepared for it.” Another student said, “Many of us, the affected students, have not been idle during this period. We have projects already in motion that would be abruptly cut short if we are called back to school now. It won’t be a very bad idea if we start the academic year on a fresh page in January.” A 300-level student also said that academic performances of students might suffer. She said, “Many students have become very distant from their books and, since exams might be looming almost immediately after resumption, we might not have enough time to reconcile ourselves with our academic level before the strike.” http://leadership.ng/news/121113/confusion-trails-ASUU-s-move-suspend-strike-0 |
Lecturers at the University of Jos have voted for continuation of the on-going strike by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) in the country. Chairman of the chapter, Dr. David Jankam who made this known on Monday while speaking with THE NATION shortly after the congress of the chapter said members did not see any substance in the dialogue with the federal government to warrant calling off the strike. According to Dr Jankam, “We have just rounded off our meeting, as a matter of fact our members voted overwhelmingly for the continuation of the state strike. “I can also confirm to you that five of the eight universities that made up the Bauchi Zone of ASUU has also voted for continuation of the strike, and the general saying is that the federal government has not shown any commitment so far. “We started the meeting by briefing our members on issues resolved with the federal government in their last meeting with the president of ASUU. “But in responding to the briefing, our members observed that the main issues that led to the strike were not discussed as part of the meeting in Aso Rock. “As such my members said president Jonathan is taking them for a ride by trying to divert attention from the core subjects of the strike” According to Dr. Jankam, “I will now convey the resolve of our branch to our national president in our NEC meeting scheduled for this week. If the majority of the chapter voted for call off, it will ne called off, but if majority of chapters voted for continuation, so be it” said Dr. Jankam source http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/11/latest-on-strike-we-want-ASUU-strike-to.html?m=1 |

The strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may end on or before 15th November,2013 if feelers from the union’s zonal congresses are anything to go by. Journalists gathered from reliable sources that the national leadership had briefed the zonal chapters of the union on the outcome of the recent meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan. A source close to the leadership told journalists in Zaria yesterday that “The zonal congresses where held on Wednesday 6th November, 2013. For example, the Kano Zone meeting was held at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. “At the end of the meeting the body language of ASUU chairmen that make up the zone and attended the meeting indicated that they may accept the offer of the president, but you know this depends on the outcome of the congresses of the various universities that make up each zone. “All the universities in Nigeria that are participating in the strike will now hold their individual congresses on Monday, 11th November,2013 to brief their lecturers on what the president has offered. If majority of the lecturers in every university agree to accept the offer of the federal government, it means that the national leadership of ASUU will call off the strike on or before Friday, 15th November,2013 as all the results of the congresses would have been collated latest by Wednesday. “We are optimistic but it depends on the decision that individual lecturers would make,” the source said. Chairman of ASUU-ABU Zaria chapter, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Aliyu, confirmed that ABU Zaria would have its congress on Monday next week. Source osundefender |
The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) will hold a referendum on Monday where lecturers will deliberate on the outcome of the meeting with President Jonathan and ASUU leadership. The lecturers are expected to vote on whether to continue with the strike action or return to lecture halls. Invitations have reportedly been sent out by the local chapters of ASUU to their members seeking their attendance in order for them to participate in the important meeting that bears on the destinies of tertiary students who have been out of school for the past five months. Since the 13 hour marathon meeting ASUU had with President Jonathan earlier this week, it has been expected that the leadership of the Union would soon call of the strike. Source the herald.. |

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has said it will not surrender, even if the receives the directive of the National President of the Union. Dr. David Janakam, the Chairman of the UNIJOS chapter, stated this in an interview in the capital city of Plateau State - Jos. "The National President of ASUU cannot ask us to call off just because the Union has met with Mr. President. We don't operate that way. Whatever agreement reached between the national body and Mr. President will be a subject of discussion at local branches. "We can only call it off when the local branches give their acceptance to whatever agreement reached with the Federal Government in their last meeting with President Jonathan. Dr. Janakam said ASUU members have lost confidence in the Federal Government when it comes to agreement based on the lesson learnt from the current strike adding that the minutes of the last meeting with President Jonathan will be critically reviewed. "If the local branches do not see any seriousness in the contents of that meeting, we will let our national body know of our opinion accordingly. If our response is positive, only then the national body can announce that we have agreed to resume classes. "So, as far as this strike is concerned, it is the members of ASUU nationwide that can determine the end of the strike, not the National President. Leaders of various chapters of ASUU cannot take decision on behalf of their members in this case. It is the members themselves that should say it is time to call off. So it is not a leadership thing" said Dr. Jankam. "I'm just coming back from Abuja where that National President and zonal chairmen briefed us chairmen of local chapters on their dialogue with Mr. President. Back home we will converge in our congress to discuss the issues. Whatever resolution reached in our congress will be made known to our national body. "This is going to be the processes for calling off of this strike. That was why I said this strike cannot be called off with directive of ASUU President. It has to be the other way round". He said the congress of the UNIJOS ASUU chapter has been scheduled for Monday next week. Source naij. Com |
