Politics › Re: Nigeria Is Deeply Divided - UN Report by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 9:52am On Sep 05, 2016
timosky1:
The UN has described Nigeria as a “divided society on the basis of the plurality of ethnic, religious and regional identities that had tended to define the country’s political existence.”

This was made known to the public during a consultative meeting on the formulation of the UN Development Assistance Framework IV (UNDAF IV) for the South-East geo-political zone in Awka.

The report noted that for decades, different segments of Nigeria’s population had, at different times, expressed feelings of marginalisation, of being short-changed, dominated, oppressed, threatened, or even targeted for elimination.

The report also painted a gloomy picture for the country as most of the development and social indices in Nigeria recorded much below acceptable standards.

It noted that the major challenges facing Nigeria were constraints of economic growth and social development and lack of good governance.

https://www.unitednaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Barack_Obama_chairs_a_United_Nations_Security_Council_meeting-696x464.jpg

Part of the report read: “Nigeria is one of the poorest and most unequal countries in the world, with over 80 million or 64 per cent of her population living below poverty line. “Poverty and hunger have remained high in rural areas, remote communities and among female-headed households and these cut across the six geo-political zones, with prevalence ranging from approximately 46.9 per cent in the South-west to 74.3 per cent in North-west and North-east.

“Nigeria’s economy is currently in a recession and it is estimated that government revenues have fallen by as much as 33 per cent, which has further resulted in the contraction of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 0.36 per cent in the first three months of 2016.

“The vulnerable macroeconomic environment in Nigeria is affecting investors’ confidence in the domestic economy.” The report also revealed widespread cases of violence against women and girls, including physical and sexual assault, even as it noted that 42 per cent of Nigerian youths were unemployed. “Nigeria faces humanitarian and emergency crises of considerable proportions fueled by a combination of factors including climate change, inter-communal conflicts and violence, insurgency, recurring floods, heavy handed tactics of security forces in combating crime and insurgency.

“The overall consequence is the situation of systematic and chronic internal displacement that has given rise to different humanitarian crises that include the most egregious and dehumanising human rights abuses,” the report stated. The report however noted that transforming and diversifying Nigeria’s development paths needed a radical and new approach.

It recommended investing in people and in a strong more dynamic and inclusive productive informal sector.

Last week, the UN regional humanitarian coordinator, Toby Lanzer rated the growing humanitarian crisis in Borno as being at level with that of war-torn regions across the world. Lanzer gave the sad rating during a visit to Bama, the largest Borno town to come under the siege of the Islamist militant sect, Boko Haram.

“Having worked in Darfur, Chechnya, and South Sudan, this is about as bad as it gets,” Lanzer was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund has warned that if timely aid is not availed, 49,000 children will lose their lives in Nigeria’s North-east region.

Politics › Re: Buhari Has No Solution To Economic Crisis - APC Chieftain by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 3:36pm On Sep 02, 2016
Ibunma:
– A former APC governorship aspirant in Benue state, Nath Apir, says the Buhari led government has failed to do the needful to sustain the level of economic growth recorded by the previous administration

– Says Nigeria is in shambles, adding that the people can hardly feed and that the naira has crashed to over N400 to the dollar

– Apir casts doubts on President Buhari’s ability to proffer solution to the economic crisis.

Apir says President Buhari cannot assemble a group of yes sir people and expect good results because there is no one to challenge him.
A former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Benue state, Nath Apir, says Nigerians are currently regretting voting for President Muhammadu Buhari at the last general elections.

Apir, reacting to the declaration by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) that the nation’s economy has gone into recession, lamented that the APC led government had failed to do the needful to sustain the level of economic growth recorded by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

Vanguard reports that the social critic who spoke on Thursday, September 1, in Makurdi said the Nigerian economy was performing above average during the last administration.
He said it took the President Buhari-led administration six months to appoint ministers in a country which was rated by the World Bank and the IMF as Africa’s largest and number one economy.

He complained that Nigeria is in shambles, adding that the people can hardly feed and that the naira has crashed to over N400 to the dollar.
He said the administration talks of recovering money from looters but Nigerians have not seen where the revered monies have gone to.

He said: “He has just aggravated our economic situation in the country. Six months no Minister and the country was drifting and has not recovered till today and he has brought us to this level. Nigerians are regretting voting Buhari, that is the truth.
“All his policies had been anti corruption, by the time he came in as military ruler in 1983 we resorted to the purchasing of essential commodities. We are back to that vicious circle. We are back to anti corruption war without real economic policies.”

Apir said Buhari has no solution to the economic crisis, noting that the experience of the finance minister is low.
He said the president cannot assemble a group of yes sir people and expect good results because there is no one to challenge him.

Meanwhile, the APC has reacted to attacks by the opposition party, claiming that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to be blamed for Nigeria’s recession.
APC on Thursday, September 1, launched an acerbic counter-attack on the opposition PDP, accusing the party and Nigeria’s past presidents produced under its platform of bringing the current economic recession upon the nation.
The ruling party said the 16 years misrule of the PDP plunged Nigeria into the current economic chaos.

Politics › Re: Presidency Reacts To NBS Report, Insists Economy Performing Better. by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 6:00pm On Aug 31, 2016
tritt:
Despite the economic recession that the country is presently facing, the Presidency on Wednesday declared that the Nigerian economy is performing better than the predictions of the International Monetary Fund, IMF.
It, however, admitted that the inflation and unemployment rates in the country had remained high despite efforts by the current government.

The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, stated this in a statement while reacting to the Gross Domestic Product figures for the 2016 second quarter by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

Dipeolu noted that the report, while confirming a temporary decline, has also indicated what he called hopeful expectation in the country’s economic trajectory, stressing that there were clear indications that the second half of the year will be better.

“Besides the growth recorded in the agriculture and solid mineral sectors, the Nigerian economy in response to the policies of the Buhari presidency is also doing better than what the IMF had estimated with clear indications that the second half of the year would be even much better,” he said.

The presidential aide assured that the current administration would continue to work diligently on the economy and engage all stakeholders to ensure that beneficial policy initiatives were actively pursued and the dividends delivered to the Nigerian people.

Quoting the recently released data from the NBS as showing a decline in GDP by -2.06% in the second quarter of 2016 on a year-on-year basis, he attributed the outcome to a sharp contraction in the oil sector due to huge losses of crude oil production as a result of vandalisation and sabotage.

Politics › Re: Nigeria Will Be Among Top Investment Countries In 2019 - Buhari Assured by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 10:52am On Aug 29, 2016
Igbofirstlady:
Nigeria will be one of the most attractive and easiest places of doing business in the world by 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari has assured.

Speaking at a plenary session on “Dialogue with the Private Sector” at the ongoing sixth Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD VI), in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday, President Buhari, said his administration was implementing policies and measures to create the right environment for investors and businesses in Nigeria.

Nigeria is currently ranked 169 out of 189 countries by the World Bank according to the Bank’s 2016 Ease of Doing Business report.

President Buhari told the session, which was attended by several African leaders, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and international business executives that his administration’s vision and objective was to make Nigeria one of the top investment destinations in the world within the shortest possible time.

‘‘We believe government has a particular responsibility to create the right and attractive environment for businesses and economic activities to thrive.

‘‘In furtherance of this vision, we have launched the Presidential Enabling Environment Council (PEEC) and Inter-Ministerial Council to oversee the efforts of government to remove various bottlenecks that stifle businesses and economic activities and thereby create economic activities and the right enabling environment and investment climate in Nigeria.

‘‘The secretariat will include strong private sector representation that would be led by experienced business professionals from the private sector.

‘‘We are committed to moving up the ranking of the World Bank’s ease of doing business index 20 places in the first year and be in the top 100 within the next three years,’’ he said, according to a statement by his senior special assistant, media, Garba Shehu.

He further stated that the federal government will take concrete measures to diversify the economy by devoting more resources to agriculture in the 2017 budget, pointing out that African countries had a lot to learn from Japan in developing their agriculture.

“Japan has greatly advanced in technology, particularly in solar power, infrastructure to spur growth in medium and small-scale industries. Because of the advanced use of technology, farming and agriculture can become competitive,” he said.

The president, however, noted that Nigeria was making steady progress in agricultural development.

“This year, in Nigeria, we started an aggressive farming programme that entails organising farmers into cooperatives in the second and third tiers of government.

“We intend to put more resources in our 2017 budget, especially in the procurement of machinery for land clearing, fertilisers, pesticides and training of less-educated farmers by farm extension instructors.

‘‘We have already registered some success this year in a number of states; we identified some 13 states that will be self-sufficient in rice, wheat and grains before the end of 2018.

‘‘We are very positive that soon, we will be able to export these food products. We are also lucky that the farming season in the northern part of the country has been very good and we are expecting a bumper harvest this year,’’ President Buhari said.

On his expectation from TICAD, the president said Japan’s story of rapid economic growth, hard work and advanced technology should encourage Africans to strive harder and solve its development challenges.

‘‘Japan has the knowledge, technology and capital to assist African countries to develop and Japanese firms are in a very good position to successfully compete for the development of infrastructure in Nigeria,’’ he added.
