Politics › Re: Profile Of Olabiyi Durojaiye: NCC Chairman by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 3:30pm On Aug 03, 2016 |
7thCANON: Birth and early career
Durojaiye earned a BSc (Economics) London, and an LLB, London. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1979, and is a Barrise Supreme Court of Nigeria. He also graduated from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru. He worked for 35 years in the Nigerian public sector, including 28 years as a Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the National Mint. He worked with the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve System in the U.S.A and the City University London between 1964 and 1982.
Political career
Durojayi was an elected member of the 1988/89 Constituent Assembly. In 1992 he was a candidate to run for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), losing to M.K.O. Abiola. Abiola's subsequent election as president was quashed by General Ibrahim Babangida, leading to a return to military rule. In December 1996 Durojayi was arrested by the military regime of General Sani Abacha, and was imprisoned for 560 days and mistreated while in jail. A June 1997 report stated the 63-year-old lawyer was reportedly in poor health and suffering from high blood pressure caused by his treatment. Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience and campaigned for his release.
Durojaiye was an elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999-2003). After taking his seat in the Senate he was appointed to committees on Judiciary, Establishment (Chairman) and Special Projects. In December 2002 he recommended a life jail-term for anyone who perpetrated election fraud. He won the AD primaries to represent the party in the Ogun East constituency in the 2003 elections, although he was threatened with legal action by Chief Adamo Olayinka Yesufu, a rival for the nomination. In the event, the PDP candidate Tokunbo Ogunbanjo won the election
Durojaiye's wife Florence Olufunso Adejoke died on 6 June 2009, aged 72, in Ikeja, two months after she and her husband had marked their 50th wedding anniversary. She was survived by her husband, six children and many grandchildren. In a March 2010 interview Durojaiye, now in his late 70s, spoke out against the covert way in which President Umaru Yar'Adua's illness was being handled, with the President smuggled back into Nigeria at night and no reports issued on his condition.

Politics › Re: 7 Ministers Buhari May Sack Soon by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 7:32pm On Aug 02, 2016 |
Samguine: In the spirit of celebrating Democracy day on May 29th, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari advised Nigerians to pass a verdict on the performance of his appointed officials so that he will know if he should change them.
The president was quoted as saying, “I am waiting for the newspapers to tell me the performance of my ministers and whether I should make changes”., while fielding questions from journalists at the Statehouse.
Meanwhile, here is a look at the performances of these Ministers in their various ministries and what might make President Muhammadu Buhari to have second thought on their performance, as c0mpiled by Nigerian Bulletin.
They are:
1. Minister of Housing, Power and Roads, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola: Babatunde Fashola was known for his versatile and hard-working spirit as the then Governor of Lagos State.
The minister seems over-powered due to the 'giant' ministries allotted to him by President Muhamamdu Buhari.
Since Fashola's assumption as the Minister of the three-combined ministries, it seems the glory of the Lagos born Senior Advocate of Nigeria is gradually fading away.
The President needs to help Fashola offload some of the loads on his head to allow room for optimal performance and long life.
2. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu: The Minister of Education may be on the watch list of President Muhamamdu Buhari if the president listens to the impulse and messages from the public. The controversies trailing the Ministers' pronouncement and infringement on Varsities' policy and autonomy. The issues of Post Jamb registration, battle for the survival of Vice Chancellorship in tertiary institutions and the blunder of sacking before reinstatement of the heads of Universities established by the former president, Goodluck Jonathan might be another reason why President may consider Mr. Adamu as a goner.
3. Minister of Youths and Sports : Solomon Dalung: The comrade and 'esprit de corp' Minister, who his known with his identity of wearing red beret 'cap' to functions and events which many believed might be linked to an occult group.
Without public opinion and outcry, everything portray to the inability of this Minister to make the nations proud in Sporting activities.
The pulling out of Nigerian sport ministry to provide a befitting burial arrangement for the late Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, the alleged report of Rio Olympics team to find their ways to Rio, inability of Team Nigeria to fly to various competition owing to visa issues, ticketing other embassies' stress accrued to the office of the Honourable Minister of Sports.
If Nigeria and Nigerians want to make a landmark strike in the sporting world, then Mr. Solomon Dalung might be a -no – go area for Mr. Buhari when considering dropping Ministers or changing his cabinet.
4. Minister of Industry, Trade And Investment: Okechukwu Enelemah: According to Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun during her meeting with the Nigerian Senate before recess, she said the Nigeria economy is technically in 'Recession'. What did means is that President Muhamamdu Buhari needs to gear up in doings and ensure that he has a viable team members that can salvage the economic or better put, that can rescue the dying economy from total collapse.
Trade and Investment should be one of the rescue to the dilemma currently facing the present administration and the Minister and his team needs to ensure that their works and activities project the nation towards economic progression.
5. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs: Usani Uguru: With the recent crisis rocking the Delta region, coupled with the blasts of oil installations, Mr. Uguru hasn't been pro-active enough to step up his game with the Niger Delta Militants.
The president do not only need a versatile Minister in this ministry but someone that can talk down the Militants and a closer person to this region.
6. Minister of Science and Technology: Ogbonnaya Onu: The ministry of Science and technology is an evolving portfolio that needs the hands of young, talented and professional mind that can move with the global trend in technological advancement. Mr. Onu might not be living to the expectation at the moment and the President may replace him soon.
7. Minister of Women Affairs: Aisha Alhassan: Everything has pointed in one direction for the APC governorship aspirants in Taraba at the last general elections, Hajia Alhassan, common known as Mama Taraba. For the fact that Mama spent over 5 months of his ministerial position at battling with treatment at the foreign land. There is need for President Buhari to do more at appointing those capable and can really take the country to dream and aspiration of the President if only, there are not mere paper work.
In your own view, do you other Minister(s), you think President Buhari can do away with and get new and fresh mind on board? Lets have your views

Oluwabusobomi: Forex policy killing businesses — NECA
By Clifford Ndujihe, Victor Ahiuma-Young, Dapo Akinrefon & Gbenga Oke - LAGOS
Some eminent Nigerians and employers of labour, yesterday, disagreed with Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed over President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic policy.
While the Information Minister said, yesterday, that President Buhari’s administration was on the right track and that there was no alternative to what it was doing economically, some eminent Nigerians disagreed, insisting that the economy could be run better.
Speaking at a meeting with members of staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid, Spain, during his two-day official visit to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, UNWTO, according to NAN, Lai Mohammed said: “I believe that we are on the right track, there will be some pains, but there is no alternative to what we are doing.”
He claimed that the administration had fulfilled its campaign promises to address insecurity, fix the economy and fight corruption.
In the area of security, Mohammed said when President Buhari came on board, 14 of the 20 local government areas of Borno State, four in Adamawa and three in Yobe were under the sovereign authority of Boko Haram. He said the proactive measures and soft diplomacy with neighbouring African countries, the U.S., France and the G-8 had helped the country to “decisively deal with Boko Haram.”
“Today, all the major highways leading to Maiduguri are open and about two months ago, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, played a league match in Maiduguri stadium,” he said.
On the renewed agitations in the Niger-Delta and parts of the South-East, the minister reassured that the government would not marginalise any part of the country and assured that economic development would go round to everyone.
He stressed that no amount of economic reforms put in place could work unless the monster of corruption was successfully dealt with. Mohammed said the administration’s fight against corruption was not selective, and that the government was not probing the 2015 elections campaign funds of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The minister’s take on the economic strides of the government elicited sharp response from Second Republic politician, Chief Guy Ikokwu; Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed; the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA; and National President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima.
There is no economic policy in place – Ikokwu
Decrying the level of poverty in the country, Chief Ikokwu wondered the kind of economic policy that had been in place in the last 14 months.
His words: "The nation is totally confused with regard to the economic policy. If there was clear economic policy, we won’t be in recession. If the policy is market-oriented, instead of government-oriented, the private sector would have readjusted one year after the government took off, there would not have been maximum devaluation of the currency.
"It has been one year without an economic policy. Why should there be imbalance in the economy if there is economic policy? Full implementation of the budget is yet to begin. Economically, the nation is disillusioned and the complaints are everywhere."
Buhari has no economic policy — Mohammed
Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, said President Buhari and Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed should stop deceiving Nigerians that this government had any economic policy.
He said: “As far as I am concerned, President Buhari and Lai Mohammed are paying lip service to the economy by telling Nigerians they have a policy. Today, I cannot see anything and several Nigerians cannot see any policy in place.
So, why should Nigerians support this so called policy that they do not know and why should they believe Buhari and Lai Mohammed?
“They talk about diversifying the economy but I can tell you that the same fertilizer I bought for N4,000 last year is now N9,000 this year. If this is what they call diversification, then they are talking nonsense. When there is no insecticide and no better harvest, what are they diversifying the economy to. “I am not persuaded by that lie by Lai Mohammed."
Nigerians are sick and tired of excuses - Alhaji Yerima Shettima,
Nigerians are sick and tired of the excuses made by the federal government in fixing the nation’s ailing economy.
“This is part of the excuses we have seen from this government. After coming out to state that the previous government failed, the APC promised that it was coming to make things right, but to our surprise, the party is now coming out to tell us that it did not know the extent of the damage done by the past government.
"I must tell you that Nigerians have not had it this bad and this is worrying. When the Federal Government is saying there is no alternative, is it implying that this is a case of incompetence on the part of the government or lack of experience? I see this as an excuse."
Forex policy killing business — Oshinowo, NECA boss
The National Employers Consultative Association, NECA, on its part, said the Foreign Exchange, forex, policy of the government had been killing businesses. NECA Director-General, Mr. Segun Oshinowo, lamented that the first half of the year was particularly excruciating to businesses as it was very difficult for business owners to access foreign exchange to buy raw materials and critical spare parts.
“First half of the year was horrible because the key issue was access to foreign exchange. Even for those business owners government recognize as having a right to access foreign exchange for their businesses, also found it difficult to access foreign exchange for raw materials and critical spare parts. Even for those big players, with all their muscles and influence, they found it difficult to source for their critical raw materials. Their suppliers could not access foreign exchange to honour their contractual obligations to them. So, on account of that, some of them had to shut down certain aspects of their production lines and declared workers redundant.
“With the flexible foreign exchange market, some are doing a little better than the first half. But, the problem still remains that supplies have not increased significantly. Of course, one should not expect the supplies to improve significantly over night. One advantage this current dispensation should have on this economy is significant inflow of foreign exchange sources other than the sale of our crude oil. I do know that those who are likely to make that happen will not take on the spot decisions. The tendency for them will still be to stand on the sideline and watch whether government will be consistent with its policy.
So, I really did not see an immediate solution to the issue of supply. But as we move towards the end of the year, we want to believe that the supply would improve. Because it is in the improvement of the supply that businesses will be able to have access to foreign exchange. Until that happens, one would continue to see a situation where the difficulties that businesses are going through will still continue towards the end of the year."

Politics › Re: Documents Expose Lawmakers’ Budget Fraud - Premium Times by PatrickAnyanwu(m): 6:02pm On Jul 28, 2016 |
TheTrueSeeker: To pass the 2016 Appropriation Bill, Nigerian lawmakers engaged in what appeared as massive fraud, allocating obscene amounts of money to themselves to purportedly execute thousands of fictitious ‘constituency projects’, documents made available to PREMIUM TIMES have shown.
The documents were sent to this newspaper as tension intensified in the House of Representatives over the unfolding budget padding scandal. The crisis was sparked by the removal of former appropriations committee chairman, Abdulmumin Jibrin, from his post. The Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, announced Mr. Jibrin’s departure in a statement on the floor of the lower chamber, saying he betrayed the trust reposed in him by his colleagues. But in a blistering response, Mr. Jibrin denied the allegations, saying it was Mr. Dogara who in fact attempted to smuggle billions into the budget. Mr. Jibrin also lashed out at Deputy Speaker, Lasun Yusuf; House Whip, Alhassan Doguwa; and Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, accusing them of colluding with Mr. Dogara to fraudulently insert up to N40 billion in new expenses for themselves from the National Assembly budget. After several weeks of extensive negotiation and intrigues between the executive and the National Assembly, the 2016 budget was finally passed in April and President Buhari signed it into law on May 6.
But the damning documents sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday showed how lawmakers sought Speaker Dogara’s benevolence to approve various ‘projects’ for themselves in their respective constituencies.
From provision for solar-powered boreholes in Kano to an urgent need to feed police cadets in Bauchi, lawmakers inundated Mr. Jibrin with requests to pad the 2016 budget with mainly projects they had no business canvassing for. Many lawmakers jumped on the gravy train and routed their requests for ‘constituency projects’ through Speaker Dogara, the documents showed. One of the documents showed how a whopping N2.8 billion was earmarked for just 56 of such petty projects. The documents also showed that Speaker Dogara arbitrarily approved amounts for the fraudulent projects without any systematic costing, indicating that the requesting lawmakers were never expected to execute the projects, but to pocket the allocations.
Jonathan Gbefwi, one of the lawmakers whose names appeared on the documents, did not answer PREMIUM TIMES’ repeated calls and SMS for comments. Three other lawmakers had their lines switched off. Mr. Dogara has vowed to remain silent in the face of the allegations, saying he would allow the House treat them at institutional level.
