Police nab Lagos airport robbers LAGOS—LAGOS State Police Command’s manhunt for the robbery gang that, three weeks ago, raided Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, killing two policemen and injuring several others, has led to the arrest of some members of the gang, Vanguard learnt yesterday. Information available to Vanguard revealed that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, who took over investigations, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar. The operatives, who acted on a tip-off, as gathered, arrested the bandits from their respective hideouts within Lagos. So far, the suspects were said to have confessed during interrogation on how they planned and carried out the operation. Vanguard gathered that the suspects first raided the airport in February 2012, where N700 million was carted away. It would be recalled that a 10- man robbery gang, armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded the airport on March 13, 2013 at 9am and headed for the Bureau De Change, BDC, operators centre near the car park, firing indiscriminately. During a shoot-out with a team of policemen attached to the airport, two policemen were reportedly gunned down while a member of the gang was also killed. The fire fight, however, prevented the robbers from reaching their target. Vanguard gathered that the suspects may be paraded today. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/police-nab-lagos-airport-robbers/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
Abandoned Buildings, Terrorists’ Hideouts MUCH has been made about the discovery of improvised explosive devices, bombs, and guns in an abandoned Lagos building belonging to the Bayelsa State Government that the impression could be created that the ownership of the building was more important that the import of the discovery. Terrorists and other criminals find comfort in abandoned buildings. We had so warned in an editorial earlier in the year about the waste and illegal uses of abandoned buildings, many of them belonging to governments. Abandoned buildings pose a combination of risks. Their use for criminal activities is only one of them. There are hundreds of thousands of uncompleted or abandoned buildings in Lagos and our other towns and cities, some on the verge of collapsing. They belong to federal, state, local governments, corporations, or individuals. In the case of governments, the buildings form part of a bigger national malaise of unplanned projects, their poor funding, and supervision. At the individual level, ambitious developers who run out of funds, die, or are otherwise incapacitated also account for abandoned buildings. If construction stops, within days, the building is stealthily occupied, first at nights, and later, it becomes a rooming house for all kinds of characters. Illegal immigrants, vandals, vagrants and criminal elements find abandoned buildings useful as bases for their nefarious activities. They are hardly challenged. Abandoned buildings also accommodate illegal immigrants who pour into our country assured of free accommodation. Many unemployed people, who have lost means to secure housing, use these buildings. What is certain is that crimes are never far from those surroundings. The search for criminal hideouts should include vehicles, many of which their owners abandon for years and nobody cares how others use them. Criminals would remain unrelenting in inventing new ways of protecting their activities. Legislations and effective planning regulations could be helpful in dealing with abandoned buildings. The statutes should be enforceable. Given our current security conundrum, there should be an all-out effort to ensure that uncompleted buildings are properly policed to avoid their being used as criminal hideouts. The recent arrest of nine suspected terrorists, including a Chadian, in the Ijora Badia area of Lagos metropolis, in the Bayelsa abandoned building – they had lived there for years – again shows the security challenges abandoned building pose. Security agencies should remain ahead of criminals. For now, the best efforts of the security agencies are still behind the criminals’. Security agencies therefore need more intelligence to uncover the tracks of the criminals. It would be more effective to block supplies of arms to criminals than discovering where they hide their arms. All these call for a more intensified approach to the war against terror. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/abandoned-buildings-terrorists-hideouts/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
9-year-old sold drugs at school Pretoria - The availability of drugs at primary schools has come under the spotlight after a 9-year-old boy from Centurion was caught selling drugs to primary and high school children. “The pupil was selling drugs for his mother and father,” Tshwane metro police inspector Sidney de Wet told Beeld. He said Grade 7 learners were often culprits at primary schools where drugs were used. The most popular drugs for sale were dagga and nyope. Inspector De Wet said many primary schools were naïve about drug problems. "The schools often don’t know which signs to look out for – like dagga, which makes eyes turn red, nyope which brings about sleepiness and Cat, which makes users aggressive.” He said teachers and parents should look out for plastic bags that can be sealed as well as containers and even sorbet bags which are used to carry drugs. An educational expert from the University of the Free State confirmed that many primary school children used drugs. “What I have seen is that many primary schools have children who use drugs. It is not all the primary schools,” said Dr Lynette Jacobs. She said a study of high school pupils in Gauteng, the Free State and the Eastern Cape revealed that 58% regularly used dagga at school while 38% said other drugs were used on school property. www.m.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/9-year-old-sold-drugs-at-school-20130402 |

Three Reasons to Avoid Canned Vegetables For convenience, coming home after a tough day's work, throwing your briefcase on the chair and opening up canned vegetables to cook in the pan with some other quick-cooking ingredients seems just great. Canned vegetables may not be such a great idea, though. Consider the following three reasons to ditch the cans and opt for frozen or fresh vegetables instead. 1. Bisphenol A (BPA) Bisphenol A worries health practitioners because of its possible link to serious health problems. BPA is an industrial compound, but food manufacturers use BPA to protect food from metal corrosion and bacteria. BPA may affect neural development in fetuses. BPA is also linked to endocrine disorders, heart disease and cancer. Canned foods have high amounts of BPA that some study groups find unacceptable. One group of scientists discovered levels of BPAs in canned foods that were 200 times the level proclaimed by the U.S. Government as safe. Research also shows that BPA leaches from the liner into the food of canned goods. In a study's random sampling of 50 cans from the U.S. and Canada, researchers found BPA in 46 of the 50 food products. The highest level was found in a can of green beans. 2. Sodium You need not worry about the sodium content of fresh vegetables, but canned vegetables pose a sodium risk if you are on a low-salt diet for health reasons. Check the ingredients of canned vegetables because they carry high levels of sodium. Fortunately, food manufacturers, in response to consumer awareness about sodium, have responded with reduced-sodium varieties. Unfortunately, not all canned vegetable products have low-sodium versions that you can find easily in stores. One state health agency concerned about the amount of sodium in commercial food took a look at canned tomatoes to illustrate the difference. The agency found that regular canned tomatoes had 15 times as much sodium as reduced-sodium canned tomatoes. Still, you can salvage your cans of vegetables by rinsing the food from the can first in water before putting the veggies in the pot, oven, pan or microwave. That will remove some of the salt content. 3. Sulfites Sulfites are sulfur-based compounds added to food as preservatives. They are found in canned vegetables. About one out of 100 people is sensitive to sulfites, and reactions can be deadly. Sensitivity varies from person to person, but the reaction manifests itself in respiratory problems. Signs of a bad reaction develop in just 15 minutes to a half-hour after eating foods with sulfites. They take the form of shortness of breath or wheezing. Food labels on canned vegetables may not say "sulfites" per se, but look for any of these ingredients which have sulfites in them: sulfur dioxide, potassium bisulfite, potassium metabisulfite or sodium sulfite. Although these are three strong reasons to avoid canned vegetables, vegetables in general are the right choice for healthy eating. The perspective recommended by nutritionists is easy to live by: choose fresh or frozen vegetables first and canned vegetables second. A university study found that fiber and key vitamins in vegetables that underwent the canning process were not compromised as a result of canning. Just limit your use of canned vegetables if you are concerned about BPA, and look for reduced-sodium choices too. www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/3-reasons-to-avoid-canned-vegetables.html |
The first commercial flight between Egypt and Iran in 34 years took off on Saturday, the latest step towards normalizing ties broken following the 1979 Iranian Islamic revolution. Egypt and Iran agreed to resume direct flights in October 2010 before President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power, but no flights were made. "A flight by Air Memphis, owned by Egyptian businessman Rami Lakah, took off from Cairo to Tehran earlier on Saturday carrying eight Iranians including diplomats," one airport official said adding that the airline could later carry out more tourist and business trips between Egypt and Iran. Diplomatic relations between Iran and Egypt were cut in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Tehran when the government in Cairo gave sanctuary to the deposed shah. But ties improved over the years, and have become significantly better since the election of Islamist Mohamed Mursi as president of Egypt in June 2012. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Egypt in February, the first visit by an Iranian leader to Cairo in more than three decades, and called for a strategic alliance with Egypt and offered a loan to the cash-strapped Arab state. Mursi visited Iran in August to attend an international summit where he initiated a quartet committee that included Egypt, Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia to discuss ways to end the Syrian civil war. Saudi Arabia later left the group. www.africaeagle.com/2013/03/first-commercial-flight-between-egypt.html?m=1 |
The stealthy, nuclear-capable U.S. B-2 bomber is a veteran of wars in Iraq and Libya, but it isn't usually a tool of Washington's statecraft. Yet on Thursday, the United States sent a pair of the bat-winged planes on a first-of-its-kind practice run over the skies of South Korea, conducting what U.S. officials say was a diplomatic sortie. The aim, the officials said, was two-fold: to reassure U.S. allies South Korea and Japan in the face of a string of threats from North Korea, and to nudge Pyongyang back to nuclear talks. But whether North Korea's young new leader, Kim Jong-un, interprets the message the way the White House hopes is anybody's guess. His first reaction, according to North Korean state media, was to order his country's missiles ready to strike the United States and South Korea. A senior U.S. official said Kim's late father, Kim Jong-il, was at least more predictable: He would issue threats that got the world's attention without provoking open conflict, and then use them as leverage in subsequent diplomatic negotiations. This time, U.S. intelligence analysts are divided over whether Kim Jong-un is pursuing the same strategy. "It's a little bit of an 'all bets are off' kind of moment," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity,. The official said the idea for the practice bombing run, part of annual U.S.-South Korean military exercises named Foal Eagle, emerged from government-wide discussions over how to signal to Seoul and Tokyo that Washington would back them in a crisis. It is less clear whether Washington informed China, North Korea's neighbor and only major ally, in advance. The plan was approved by the White House and coordinated with South Korea and Japan, the official said. www.africaeagle.com/2013/03/us-b-2-bombers-sent-to-korea-on-rare.html?m=1 |

Too much salt in the diet, which is marked by high sodium content, can deeply impact almost all biochemical pathways in your body. As a standard, your dietary intake of sodium should not exceed 2,000 milligrams per day. Any excess of this amount can inhibit the proper absorption of nutrients and disrupt normal body functions. The following are seven dangerous health consequences of eating too many salty foods. 1. Hypertension The number one medical consequence of high salt intake is hypertension. High intake of salt causes water retention and promotes abnormal influx of water molecules into your blood vessels. This action instantaneously increases your blood volume and blood pressure. Sudden rises of blood pressure can trigger life threatening cardiovascular emergencies like strokes and heart attacks. Reducing your sodium intake through diet can lower your blood pressure by as much as 25%. 2. Abnormal Heart Development A habit of eating salty food can also heighten your risk of non-blood pressure related heart diseases. Having higher than normal blood volume means that your heart has to work much harder to provide proper circulation. Over time, your heart can become abnormally large and your heart valves can become thinner. An enlarged heart is significantly weaker and can lead to symptoms like chest pains, breathlessness and chronic fatigue. Fatal cases like sudden cardiac arrest and heart failure can also occur. 3. Osteoporosis Sodium inhibits your body’s absorption and utilization of calcium, leading to a loss of bone mass and increased porousness of your bones. Women after menopause, diabetics and elderly people who are already at high risk of osteoporosis should be especially careful about salt intake. Having a high salt diet can drastically heighten your chances for fractures and other skeletal deformations. 4. Kidney Disorders Excess calcium and sodium that are not used by your body goes into your urine. This can increase the filtration load of your kidneys and increase the likelihood of crystal formation. Elevated blood pressure and blood volume are also extremely damaging to your kidneys. 5. Dehydration and Swelling Feeling thirsty is a direct response after having salty food. This happens because excessive sodium in your blood draws water out of your cells and into your tissues. Dehydrated cells signal your brain for water. Having fluid filled tissue makes you look bloated and swollen, and these symptoms are especially severe in the lower parts of your body. Reducing your salt intake is an effective way of preventing swollen feet, ankles and calves. 6. Digestive Diseases Sodium regulates the acid-base balance of blood and body fluids. Too much salt can trigger acid reflux and cause heart burn and long-term damage to your upper digestive tract. Studies have shown that habitual intake of salty foods is a strong risk factor for duodenal and gastric ulcers and cancers. 7. Electrolyte and Hormone Imbalance Excessive sodium can impact both your electrolyte and hormone balance. Too much sodium can severely hinder the conduction of nerve impulses and induce symptoms like dizziness, muscle cramps and shakiness. You can also have impaired sensory response, feel disoriented or develop other depressive symptoms. Source: www.3fatchicks.com/7-health-risks-of-eating-too-much-salt/ |

One issue of canned food in Niegria is that it is cheaper than the fresh or unprocessed food. Another issue is the safety of the canned food. Pls lets get ur opinion on this. |
Independent research undertaken by the Breast Cancer Fund has uncovered harmful levels of Bisphenol A – or BPA – in a range of popular canned goods. Conducting the study using tinned foods commonly consumed throughout the festive season, including cranberry sauce, corn, green beans and evaporated milk, scientists found significant doses of the potentially dangerous chemical, which has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. A common component of polycarbonate plastic used to make food containers, microwave ovenware, kitchen utensils and some baby bottles, BPA is also used in the epoxy-resin linings of tin cans to form a barrier between the metal and the food and prevent bacterial contamination. However, the toxic chemical can leach from the resin and make its way into food. Conditions connected to regular consumption are varied and range from breast and prostate cancer, infertility and early puberty in girls to type-2 diabetes, obesity and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. "The tests showed that single servings of almost half of the products had levels of BPA comparable to levels that laboratory studies have linked to adverse health effects," reported Shannon Coughlin of the Breast Cancer Fund. "When combined in a meal with other canned foods – even those with lower BPA content – the result could be a holiday meal that delivers a very concerning amount of BPA. Advertisement "Just one plate of your holiday favourites could deliver a potentially harmful dose of BPA. Then you get seconds. Then there's the leftovers. And then there's the rest of the year – most of us eat canned foods daily or weekly. Even if we don't use them much at home, canned foods are used in a lot of restaurant and cafeteria food. When you think of this daily exposure, you start to see the urgency of getting this chemical out of food cans." Though this particular study was conducted in the US, Australian watchdogs have long been lobbying for change. Last year, a similar study by consumer group Choice found that 33 out of the 38 products they tested contained BPA. And just one serving of 29 of them delivered a dose that exceeded a safe daily level of exposure for a 70kg adult. Caving to international pressure to ban the use of BPA, the Australian Government has implemented voluntary deal with major retailers. From last July, a gradual phase out of baby bottles and tinned baby food containing the chemical has been in effect. But the program was not extended to other products, citing the fact that Food Standards Australia New Zealand said existing levels were low and of no public threat. This view is disputed by researchers, with both the Choice and Breast Cancer Fund studies finding varying levels of BPA in the same brand of food after multiple tests. www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness/the-cancer-danger-in-canned-food-20111208-1oksm.html |
