BENIN -THERE was confusion
Saturday at the Benin Airport and
in what seems to be a serious
security breach on a local flight, as
a teenage boy stowed away
allegedly in the tyre hold of an Arik Aircraft from Benin to Lagos.


The Aircraft with registration
number, 5N-MJG Flight 44, left
Benin Airport at 9am for Lagos. Top officials of the Edo state
government were on board the
airline. Passengers aboard the airline were shocked when security agents found the teenager at the Lagos Airport after the aircraft landed.


Though none of the officials at the
Benin Airport agreed to comment
on the issue, but Vanguard observed that the teenager whose
name is yet to be ascertained may
have entered the airport through
the Akenzua road axis due to lack
of perimeter fencing at the Airport.

The University of Benin (UNIBEN)
yesterday gave an insight into why it sacked some senior members of staff. It said they were sacked for admission racketeering, changing of students’ grade and collection of money from students for several services.
Those affected included a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, two doctors from the Department of Mathematics, three lecturers from the Department of Production Engineering and History and International Studies, a lecturer
from the Optometry Department
and four lecturers from the Department of Microbiology.

A university source said one of
them forged signatures ofprincipal
officials to secure employment for
some persons. A statement by the institution’s spokesman, Harris Osarenren, said the officials were dismissed for misconduct.

He said the workers were sacked
after the Governing Council approved their dismissal, following recommendations of a disciplinary committee.

Non-academic staff affected
included those in the security unit,
a clerical officer and a worker in the office of the vice chancellor.

At least 78 people have been killed in the passenger train derailment in north-western Spain on Wednesday.

More than 140 were hurt, 36
seriously, after all eight carriages of the Madrid to Ferrol train came off the tracks near Santiago de
Compostela.

Media reports say the train may
have been travelling at more than
twice the speed limit around a curve. Officials say one of the train's drivers has been put under formal investigation.

It is one of Spain's worst ever train
crashes. PM Mariano Rajoy has declared three days of national
mourning. "Today is a very difficult day. Today we have lived through a terrible, dramatic accident, which I fear will stay with us for a long time. "For someone from Santiago, like myself, believe me, this is the saddest Day of Saint James of my
life."

Two investigations are being carried out - one judicial, the other
by the investigative commission for rail accidents, under the Ministry of Public Works, Mr Rajoy added.

Police parade Bishop Nwabueze
over alleged rape

PORT HARCOURT — Chairman of All
Bishops in Rivers State, Bishop
Chibuike Nwabueze, who was
arrested for allegedly raping a 15-
year old girl, was paraded,
yesterday, by the state Police
Command.
The Bishop, who confessed to the
crime before newsmen, said he was
hypnotised, adding that he was set
up by the pastor of the church
where the incident occurred.
He denied raping the underage girl,
but admitted that she removed her
clothes after he finished praying for
her in the office and before he
could shout ‘the blood of Jesus,’ he
was already all over the girl.
The Bishop said he was set up by
his fellow Bishop, who was also
contesting for the post of Chairman
of All Bishops in the state with him.
Nwabueze, who was paraded at
the Rivers State Criminal
Investigation department, SCID,
Port Harcourt, said anybody could
have fallen a victim of what
happened to him.
He described as untrue, allegation
that he made the girl abort a
pregnancy from the incident.
According to him, it was the girl’s
father that did it but he took care
of of the bill.
He said: “We have different
Colleges of Bishops. I am the
Chairman of Communion of Bishops
in Rivers State. Well, what actually
happened was a set up. It was set-
up by my enemies. The man who is
in-charge of where I went to
minister is my enemy. He is the
person that set me up.
“He invited me to his church for a
programme and afer the
programme, he set me up because
of what we are dragging. We are
dragging the chairmanship of the
communion and that was why he
set me up. But to my greatest
surprise, on the said day and after I
had prayed for her, the girl started
pulling off her clothes and before
you knew it, I had carnal
knowledge of her.”
