Christianity EtcPope Makes Surprise Phone Call Home To Argentina by Patuwa(op): 5:36pm On Mar 19, 2013
Pope Francis surprised crowds of
Catholic faithful who waited
through the night for his inaugural
Mass with a telephone call from the
Vatican to the cathedral in Buenos
Aires where he used to be
archbishop.
Latin America’s first pope
inaugurated his papacy on Tuesday
with an address to an estimated
200,000 in St. Peter’s Square in
Rome, calling for the defence of the
weakest in society and of the
environment.
In the hours before the Mass was
due to start, thousands of faithful
gathered around large television
screens set up in the central square
of Plaza de Mayo, overlooked by
the cathedral and the famous pink
presidential palace.
In his telephone message at 3:30
a.m. local time, Francis, or Francisco
as he is known in the Spanish-
speaking world, thanked the
crowds for their prayers.
“Thank you for praying, for your
prayers, which I need a lot,'' he
said. “I want to ask you a favour
that we walk together, that we
look after each other look after life,
look after the family, nature. “Don’t
forget this bishop, who though far
away, cares so much for you. Pray
for me'', he said, drawing cheers
and applause from the crowd.
Some of the worshippers slept
outside wrapped in the yellow and
white flag of the Vatican. Others
prayed inside the cathedral. “We’re
so happy to have an Argentine
pope, someone full of humility,
intelligent, and who cares about
everyone,'' said housewife Mariana
O’Connor, 51.
`I think this will mean a big change
in the country, it will transmit
peace and harmony, which is what
we need in Argentina,'' she told
Reuters Television. Jose Maria Di
Paola, a priest who works in the
slums and a friend of the pope, said
Francis was popular with the
millions of Argentines who live in
poverty.
“Lots and lots of good memories of
him and how he accompanied us
come to mind,'' he said in Plaza de
Mayo.
“The people in the slums love him,
they feel he is one of them.''
Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge
Bergoglio, took his name in honour
of St. Francis of Assisi, a symbol of
poverty, simplicity, charity and love
of nature.
Known for travelling by bus and
shunning the luxuries of high
Church office, Bergoglio lived in a
one-room apartment next to the
cathedral and grew up in a middle-
class family in Buenos Aires.

Nairaland is not always fair in handling matters. I am very sure that nairaland will soon come to a close. Nairaland gives Islam the opportunity to intimidate Christians, both on land and on the cyber space. Mr Seun, be fair in ur dealings.

vedaxcool: While it remains condemnable and abhorent and underscores the weak state Pakistan is, militant are literally over running the country more disturbing though is seeing some brainless assertion here, christians are oppressed in Palestein what does the christian do, Nothing the same way they did nothing when christians murdered each other in Rwanda to the tune of 900, 000 people the same way they do nothing while Congo christian women suffer rape, children being murdered etc! The same way the catholic church that frosbel calls the LovePeddler of babylon murdered and pillage the middle east killing, and funy enough its priest(many homosexuals) molest and destroy lives of the young, am I being unfair? We can sit here and say bad stuffs about each other! It isn't hard to do, islam is a bad religion to the extent that shameless christians have to forge their own word and try hard to pass as the Qur'an, seeing catholics make statements here makes the word mockery highly inadequate to describe their condition, the most disgraceful church and religious institution that have shamed religion remains urs truly the Catholic church and its unholy "see"!
The Islam claim to worship the merciful and benevolent God, where is the mercy there? The islam is the religion of peace...... Can any body in the world, even a day old baby point out an atom of peace demonstrated by Islam in any part of the world? Open ur brain, put on ur thinking cap, understand other people's freedom to worship and stop typing with yarnsh.

ad84ada: Patuwa, you dey vex o, Britain ke? Chai NYSC don vex some people sha.
Bros, every body de vex O. Here is an advice to current and prospective corpers still in camp,
they ll try and brain wash you with sweet tales to stay, some gullible ones ll oblige, but when orientation camp closes in 2 weeks time, you ll discover the whole experience is a mirage.
You are an investment, lots has
been spent on you, don't let a
trigger happy alimanjiri put your
people in sorrow.. The north is not
safe at least for now, we hear tales that some North East states like Taraba, Kebbi, Katsina and the likes have no history of violence.. Yes its true, same was said of Potiskum and Damaturu 2 years ago, when this savages begins, you won't get an advance mail

Conclave 2013: Sex abuse
victims’ network names Dirty
Dozen would-be popes

AS Catholic cardinals begin the
process to elect a new Pope who
will succeed Pope Emeritus
Benedict XVI, a sex abuse victims’
network has named a “Dirty
Dozen” of cardinals who are
contenders for the role of next
pope.
The list, compiled by Survivors’
Network of those Abused by
Priests (SNAP) and based on each
individual’s actions and
statements re-child abuse and a
Church cover-up in the church,
includes some frontrunners for
the position.
The cardinals on the list have
not responded to it. Vatican
spokesman Federico Lombardi
said: “It is not up to SNAP to
decide who comes to conclave
and who is chosen.” SNAP’s
executive director, David
Clohessy, said the group had
focused on candidates who had
the best chances of being
nominated pope.
The following 12 papal
candidates are the ones that we
are most worried about
becoming the next pope. These
12 were chosen based
exclusively on their actions and/
or public comments about child
sex abuse and cover up in the
church. Sources include
mainstream media accounts,
legal filings and victims’
experiences. The names are in
no particular order.
