Foreign Affairs / NATO Missile Attack On Sudan Al Shifa Factory by Paulson2020(m): 1:32pm On Aug 25, 2023
On the 20th of August 1998, US President Bill Clinton ordered a cruise missile attack on Sudan's Al Shifa factory, which produced 90% of the country's pharmaceuticals. Germany’s ambassador to Sudan at the time, Werner Daum, stated that the loss of the factory resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands from treatable diseases.

The administration of President Bill Clinton justified the attacks, based on the grounds that the al-Shifa plant was involved with processing the deadly nerve agent VX, and had ties with the Islamist al-Qaeda group of Osama bin Laden.

These justifications for the bombing were disputed by the owners of the plant, the Sudanese government, and other governments.

American officials later acknowledged "that the evidence that prompted President Clinton to order the missile strike on the Shifa plant was not as solid as first portrayed.

Officials later said that there was no proof that the plant had been manufacturing or storing nerve gas, as initially suspected by the Americans, or had been linked to Osama bin Laden, who was a resident of Khartoum in the 1980s.

Foreign Affairs / United States Readying Plans To Evacuate Drone Bases From Niger Republic by Paulson2020(m): 10:13pm On Aug 19, 2023
🇺🇸🇳🇪 US readying plans to evacuate drone bases from Niger

The U.S. is making precautionary plans to evacuate two key drone and counter-terror bases in Niger if that becomes necessary under the Niger’s new military government, the Air Force commander for Africa said Friday.

That planning includes looking for U.S.-allied nations in the Saharan and Sahel regions “that we could maybe partner up with, and then move our assets there,” Air Force Gen. James Hecker told.

Hecker stressed that there had been no decision from the Biden administration regarding whether the Niger military’s July 26 overthrow of the country’s president would compel U.S. diplomats or security forces to leave the country.

Gambian President reportedly suspends foreign trips for government officials including himself

Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has suspended all foreign travel by officials, including himself, to reduce public spending, a government spokesman announced on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

According to AFP, Barrow signed an executive order “suspending all overseas travels by the president, the vice-president, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, civil servants and employees across all government institutions and agencies,” for the rest of the fiscal year, presidential spokesman Ebrima Sankareh said in a statement.

Meetings where Gambian participation is compulsory and foreign trips entirely financed by external sources will be exempt.”

The Gambia, continental Africa’s smallest country with just over two million inhabitants, ranks 174th out of 191 on the UN’s Human Development Index, which combines health, education and standard of living criteria.

More than a fifth of the population lives on less than two dollars a day, according to the World Bank. Annual inflation reached 11.6 percent last year.
With tax revenues falling, and high state subsidies on fuel, fertiliser and grain due to the effects of the Ukraine war, the budget deficit widened last year

The budget deficit and debt levels have also risen, as tax revenues have fallen and due to higher subsidies for fuel, fertilisers and cereals as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Foreign Affairs / India Considers Wheat Imports From Russia At Discount To Calm Prices by Paulson2020(m): 12:08am On Aug 18, 2023
India is negotiating discounted imports of wheat with Russia amid sharp rise of global prices, which is a rare step aimed at increasing the supplies and curbing food inflation before next year’s elections in India.

"The imports would allow New Delhi to intervene more effectively in the market to drive down wheat prices that stoked inflation to a 15-month high in July," the agency reports.

"The government is exploring the possibility of imports through private trade and government-to-government deals. The decision will be made cautiously," revealed one of the sources of Reuters, responding to a question about import of wheat from Russia.

India has not made diplomatic agreements for import of wheat for many years. The last time that India imported a significant amount of wheat was in 2017 when private traders unloaded 5.3 million metric tonnes of the grain.

The Indian government’s plan to import Russian wheat is one of the measures that are being considered for reducing the prices of key goods, such as fuel and grains, as stated by anonymous sources.

Reportedly, the final decision may be made in a few weeks. The representatives of the Ministry of Finances and Trade and members of the government of India have not replied to emails and messages requesting to comment on the situation.

"Although India needs only 3 million to 4 million metric tons of wheat to plug the shortfall, New Delhi might consider importing 8 million to 9 million tons of wheat from Russia to have a far bigger impact on prices," another source explained.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine last year, Russia became the second largest supplier of goods to India, mainly thanks to discounts on the oil purchased by New-Delhi.

"Russia has indicated its willingness to offer a discount on prevailing market prices. There are no restrictions on the export of food commodities from Russia," one of the anonymous officials stated.

The same official added that India is also importing sunflower oil from Russia, is conducting transactions in dollars and plans to continue using this approach.

"India can easily secure a discount of $25 to $40 per ton from Russia. This will ensure that the landed cost of wheat remains significantly below local prices," a Mumbai-based dealer representing an international trading house stated.

Wholesale prices of wheat have increased by approximately 10% in two months and reached their seven-months maximum in August amid limited supply.

As of 1 August, 28.3 million tonnes of wheat were stored at the state storages, which is 20% below the average 10-year index.

Foreign Affairs / Brazil Binges On Russian Fuel Like Never Before by Paulson2020(m): 11:19pm On Aug 17, 2023
🇧🇷 🛢 🇷🇺 Brazil is poised to import a record amount of Russian fuel this month, consolidating its position as the Latin American country’s top supplier as Moscow builds new markets following a European Union ban.

➡️Imports of Russian petroleum products is set to rise 25% from July to about 235,000 barrels a day, data from energy analytics firm Kpler Ltd. show. That far outstrips the US, which used to be Brazil’s top foreign fuel supplier.

➡️Brazil started ramping up the purchases sharply in February, the month the EU banned imports and joined other Group of Seven nations in imposing a cap on Russian fuel prices. The US and its allies are trying to limit the flow of petrodollars into Russia to reduce funding for the nation’s war in Ukraine. The measures have reduced Russian fuel prices which need to price attractively in order to compete in new markets.

Foreign Affairs / Russia Special Military Operation On Ukraine 17th August, 2023. by Paulson2020(m): 11:10pm On Aug 17, 2023
🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦 Special Military Operation on August 17, 2023 -

Russian forces delivered a precise missile strike, hitting a Ukrainian ammunition train at the Mezhevaya station in the Dnepropetrovsk region. The impact led to a large fire on the target.

On the Starobelsk front, Russian Armed Forces units expanded their control zone southwest of Olshana and partially encircled Synkovka. Currently, the AFU only hold the southwest outskirts of the settlement.

On the Soledar front, Ukrainian Armed Forces attempted an attack towards Zaliznyansk. Russian military personnel effectively thwarted the attempt with artillery fire. The situation remains somewhat tense near Klescheevka, despite a general decrease in combat intensity in the sector.

On the Vremyevsky front, Russian forces continue to repel Ukrainian attempts to breach defenses in the areas of Zavetnoye Zhelanie and Priyutnoye. Meanwhile, near Orekhovo, Russian Armed Forces units valiantly withstand Ukrainian Armed Forces' pressure along the Ratbino - Verbovoye line.

Foreign Affairs / The United States Approves Sending F-16s To Ukraine From Denmark And Netherlands by Paulson2020(m): 10:54pm On Aug 17, 2023
The United States has approved sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands to defend against Russian invaders as soon as pilot training is completed, a U.S. official said on Thursday.

Ukraine has actively sought the U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to help it counter Russian air superiority.

Washington gave Denmark and the Netherlands official assurances that the United States will expedite approval of all necessary third-party transfer requests of F-16s to Ukraine so that Ukraine will get F-16s when the pilots are trained.

Denmark and the Netherlands, the two countries leading the training coalition, had recently asked for those assurances.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent letters to his Danish and Dutch counterparts assuring them that the requests would be approved, the official said.

"I am writing to express the United States’ full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors," Blinken said in a letter to the two officials, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

Blinken said, "It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty."

He said the approval of the third party requests would allow Ukraine to take "full advantage of its new capabilities as soon as the first set of pilots complete their training."

U.S. President Joe Biden had endorsed training programs for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s in May but no timing for the supply of war planes had been given so far.

Could that be the reason why Tinubu's supporters never ever said they will WASTE their vote?! grin

It is only when you are consciously and subconsciously very, very sure that the candidate you intend to vote for is going to lose, while the one who we all consciously and subconsciously know will win but we were so willing NOT to vote for an obvious winner because we hate him so much that we prefer to waste our vote on an obvious loser that is when we choose to waste our vote. The losers didn't come as a surprise at all.

Tinubu's win is neither a surprise. It is like Mancity win against Inter at the championship league final. Mancity win was too sure. Tinubu win was too sure since after he won the APC presidential ticket which was the only challenge for Tinubu, the rest was a free pass to victory.

Among those who wasted their votes, some are still wasting away in their loss while others are becoming more and more endeared to the winner, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu wanting to be part of his success. Tinubu's government will so successful there is no doubting this.
