yesterday that the association would
submit all the required documents to the
electoral commission, next week.
He said: “We have just entered a new year,

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday
enjoined faith-based organisations in the
country to shun rumours that the
administration of President Muhammadu
Buhari was moving to Islamise Nigeria.
He told religious leaders after receiving the
Lifetime Achievement Award of the
Student Christian Movement of Nigeria
(SCM) in his office, that they should dwell
on facts.
Recall that before the election in 2015,
Prof. Osinbajo spoke out that the All
Progressives Congress (APC) was not
secretly plotting to Islamise Nigeria if it
won the election.
Osinbajo
He again reaffirmed that stand stressing
that the rumour making the rounds about
plans to make Islam the official religion of
Nigeria were unfounded as the country
“can’s be Islamised”.
Osinbajo emphasised that it was
impossible to Islamise the country given
the 1999 Constitution that forbids state
religion.
He urged religious bodies to channel their
energies towards proffering solutions to
the numerous challenges facing the
country.
The vice president also challenged
Nigerian youths to wake up from slumber
and take advantage of abundant
opportunities in ICT, agriculture and other
sectors.
While noting that the opportunities were
far much more now than they were in the
past, Osinbajo harped on the need for
young people to take responsibility for
their future and be creative.
He also emphasised the importance of
using the internet to acquire knowledge as
well as learning a second language to
boost their global competitiveness.
Expressing appreciation to SCM for the
honour, the vice president solicited the
organisation’s assistance in disseminating
factual information about the Federal
Government’s policies and programmes.
Earlier, the National President of SCM,
Rev, Eric Ighalo, commended the
government for its social interventions
such as the N-Power initiative and the
conditional transfer scheme.
Ighalo expressed the willingness of the
body to partner with government in
several areas including serving as
government ambassadors in their
constituencies.
The SCM national president said that the
award was conferred on the vice president
in recognition of his integrity and
outstanding leadership he had
demonstrated over the years.
The award presentation, according to him,
culminated the 75th anniversary of the
organisation-source Vanguard

There are still a number of countries in this world where Christians are forbidden from celebrating the day associated with the birth of Jesus. Check them out below: 1. England Cromwell Oliver Cromwell overthrew the monarchy and oversaw the execution of King Charles I during the English Civil War, but for many the fiery Puritan leader is better known for banning mince pies. Christmas and the celebration of saints' days was discouraged – if not prohibited – in England between 1647 and 1660 as the country was ruled by a puritanical movement that considered the feast day 'giving liberty to carnal and sensual delights'. They mandated that shops had to remain open and cracked down on celebrations, leading to violent clashes on the streets of London and other cities. Life returned to normal after Cromwell's death in 1658 and the Restoration two years later. 2. Brunei Brunei banned public celebrations of Christmas and imposed fines and jail terms for those caught celebrating the festival in 2014, an edict that was reiterated in 2015 by religious leaders writing in local newspaper, the Brunei Times. "These enforcement measures are ... intended to control the act of celebrating Christmas excessively and openly, which could damage the aqidah [beliefs] of the Muslim community," they said. It specifically banned the wearing of Christmas costumes such as Santa hats, the lighting of candles, the signing of religious songs and putting up decorations such as Christmas trees. The Sultan of Brunei, a billionaire who owns hotels across the world, introduced a strict interpretation of Sharia law on the territory last two years. 3. Tajikistan The reclusive former Soviet republic country's education ministry issued a decree in December outlawing Christmas trees, the exchange of presents, fireworks and festive meals. Sky News reported that while the restrictions in 2015 are the strongest yet, anti-Christmas regulations have been getting increasingly restrictive over the last few years in the Muslim-majority country. In 2014, the Tajik government banned Father Christmas and three years earlier a man dressed as Santa was stabbed to death in the capital on New Year's Eve. Tajikistan also bans Halloween and in 2013 and 2014 police rounded up revellers dressed as zombies and vampires. 4. Saudi Arabia Little surprise that Saudi Arabia, a theocracy governed by the strict Wahhabi doctrine of Islam, is not a big fan of Christmas. In the past, expatriates had quietly celebrated in the comfort of their own homes (and will likely continue to) but rumours of illicit Christmas parties prompted state media in January to reiterate that celebrating the festival was not allowed in the kingdom. It went further by forbidding Muslims from greeting non-Muslims at Christmas, with a Saudi scholar saying: "If they celebrate the birth of God's son and you greet them... it means you endorse their faith." In 2015, it emerged that some expatriates in Saudi Arabia were going further, tweeting pictures of their Christmas trees and children dressed for the occasion. 5. North Korea Back in 2013 North and South Korea almost went to war after the latter erected a giant Christmas tree at the border of the two countries. North Korean state media said that the huge Christmas tree – which was lit up in a town close to the border and clearly visible from the North – was an act of psychological warfare. North Korea does not officially ban Christianity but is ranked among the most hostile countries in the world towards Christians. To complicate matters, December 24th – Christmas Eve – is celebrated in North Korea as the birthday of the Sacred Mother of the Revolution, Kim Jong Il's mum. 6. Albania Albania not only banned Christmas but religion as a whole in 1967, making the country the first and only constitutionally atheist state. The ban on any and all religious worship was only lifted after the fall of the Communist regime in 1990, when both Christians and Muslims were able to practice for the first time. During the Communist years many priests and religious leaders were rounded up and jailed, but the pious celebrated Christmas and Easter nonetheless in private. They would have cake or chicken at meal times as a way of marking the days. 7. USA Puritans, up to their usual tricks, attempted to ban Christmas when they arrived in the New World in 1620. They branded the festival 'Foolstide' and decreed that the only religious day that should be celebrated was the Sabbath. The Puritans managed to keep the ban going until the middle of the 18th century, at one point even arresting the Sir Edmund Andros, the Governor of Massachusetts, when he tried to sponsor a Christmas service. 8 CUBA Fidel Castro announced the Cuban government as atheist as soon as it took power in 1959 but it wasn't until 1969 that the Communist leader actually banned Christmas, as he wanted the population to stop partying and start working on the sugar harvest. It was Pope John Paul II who eventually persuaded the now late Cuban leader to lift his ban during a visit in 1998, when Castro agreed to make the day a national holiday. 9. Somalia Somalia banned Christmas in 2013 when a directive from the Ministry of Justice and Religious Affairs stated that no Christian festivals could be held in Somalia. Sheikh Ali Dhere, the country's director of religious matters, called a press conference a week before Christmas to make the announcement. "We alert fellow Muslims in Somalia that some festivities to mark Christian days will take place around the world in this week. It is prohibited to celebrate those days in this country," he said. It was the first time that the Somali government had banned Christmas since the country's government collapsed in 1991. In 2015, the government in Mogadishu went further, banning New Year's Eve celebrations and ordering the police and army to disperse any celebrations it found. 10. China Christmas and Christianity as a whole were banned in China after 1949 but you would not know that if you were to visit during the festive season today. China goes mad for Christmas, and it is not just Chinese Christians that get in on the act – while Christmas is not a national holiday it is a widely celebrated festival day, akin to New Year, with fireworks and fancy dress in abundance. While Santa Claus costumes and hats are a common sight on the streets of Shanghai or Beijing during Christmas, other costumes are less traditional – devil horns, for example, are sold widely to mark the day. Couples also like to treat Christmas as akin to Valentine's Day, exchanging gifts and going out for romantic meals. Local media reported in 2012 that, like in the West, the Chinese use Christmas an opportunity to hit the shops, with Christmas Eve the biggest shopping night of the year for some retailers. Popular Nigerian pastor and founder of Living
Faith Church (Winners Chapel), Bishop
Oyedepo has caused uproar after his video of
payment of tithes and offering hits the internet.
Bishop Oyedepo
In the video, Bishop Oyedepo disclosed that those
who pay their tithe are qualified for God’s
blessings adding that there are conditions to
receiving God’s blessings as long as one takes to
prophetic instructions.
“Everybody believes that God has an open
heaven full of blessings for his people but it
takes your tithe to open the file for you. So if
you only know the promise and you don’t know
the conditions, you will die frustrated. Christ has
redeemed us from the curse of sin, poverty,
death but what does it take to get there, it takes
faith in the demand. People just believe the
problem but not the demands. It is believing in the
demand that entitles you to the fulfilment of the
promise. There is no provision in the scriptures
without conditions attached. Even as free as
salvation is, you need to repent before you can
be saved. There is nothing provided for without
conditions to make .”-Naij.com

Sixteen members of the European parliament have asked the European Union High Commission to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari on the detention of Nnamdi Kanu. The Members of European Parliaments called for independent investigation into the alleged killing, torture and illegal arrest of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra by security operatives. Some members of the European parliament (MEP) have risen in support of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu. The MEPs – 16 in number in a joint letter have asked the European Union High Commission to take action on human rights abuses against members of the IPOB. The letter addressed to the High Representative and vice president of the EU high commission Federica Mogherini said the unlawful detention of Kanu and the violence against IPOB members by Nigerian government must be looked into. The letter which was dated Monday, December 19, said Kanu has been illegally imprisoned since October 14, 2015, despite being acquitted of all charges brought against him by the Department of State Services. It was signed by Julie Ward, Ana Gomes, Bart Staes, Beatriz Becerra, Brando Benifei, Catherine Stihler, Ernest Urtasun, Eva Joly and Hilde Vautmans. Others signatories to letter include: Jude Kirton-Darling, Kati Piri, Miapetra, Kumpula-Natri, Michèle Rivasi, Nessa Childers, Pascal Durand and Philippe Lamberts. The letter read in parts: “The authorities accused Kanu and his two co-defendants, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, of trying to overthrow the Nigerian head of state by broadcasting secessionist propaganda on the underground media outlet Radio Biafra, which campaigns for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria. Kanu, Madubugwu and Nwawuisi deny all charges brought against them.” “On 19th October in Abuja, the Chief Magistrate, Honourable Shuaibu, discharged Kanu of all criminal charges including the allegation of managing and belonging to an unlawful society, criminal intimidation and of criminal conspiracy. Shuaibu granted Kanu bail, of which all the conditions were met, but the Department of State Services refused to release him,” the letter said. The MEPs said charges of criminal conspiracy, engaging in unlawful society and criminal intimidation were then withdrawn on December 16, 2015, but still Kanu, Madubugwu and Nwawuisi have not been released. “On 17th December 2015, Justice Adeniyi Ademola ordered the unconditional release of Kanu from the custody of the Department of State Security Services, but this was not enacted. “Kanu’s counsel has since appealed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to help ensure his safe release, but to no avail. A court case on 5th October 2016 was later adjourned to 8th November, which has now been amended to 9th February 2017, due to the Nigeria Department of State Services failure to bring Kanu to court,” it said. It also accused the Nigerian government of sending warnings to the ECOWAS community court sitting in Abuja not to intervene in Kanu’s continued detention and trial. “It is clear that the fundamental human rights of Kanu, Madubugwu and Nwawuisi are being grossly violated. Human Rights Watch have reported of the violation of the defendants’ rights, including their right to a fair trial. “What is more, the Nigerian Government is also reportedly violating the human rights of Biafran activists. Scores of Biafrans are in detention for attempting to hold or participate in peaceful assemblies,” the letter added. It further accused the Nigerian government and security forces of using excessive force against pro-Biafran activists who have embarked on peaceful protest in Nigeria. Referring to Amnesty International’s reports on cases of arrests, disappearance and torture of IPOB members by security operatives, the MEPs said, it is unfortunate that no investigations have been carried out. “The right to peaceful assembly and association, as well as the right of freedom of expression, is protected by the Nigerian constitution. International human rights standards also require that law enforcement officials must, as far as possible, apply nonviolent means. “It is clear that the Nigerian authorities are not operating with respect to the Nigerian constitution or the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. The letter also said: “On behalf of the European Union, especially in respect to the EU-Nigeria partnership, the Nigeria EU Joint Way Forward, the developments of the 6th Nigeria-EU ministerial dialogue and the fact that Nigeria is a recipient of EU aid, we call upon you to: "Advocate for the immediate and safe release of Nnamdi Kanu and co-defendants Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi," They also called on the EU High Commission to challenge the actions of the President Muhammadu Buhari, and the DSS in regards to the detention of Kanu, Madubugwu and Nwawuisi. They called for an impartial investigation into the arrest, enforced disappearance, torture and killing of supporters and members of various pro-Biafran groups and denounce the unacceptable violence against Biafran supporters by Nigerian security forces. They also urged the EU to do more to push the Nigerian government to safeguard human rights in Nigeria by calling for guarantees on the freedom of expression of all Nigerian citizens, including their right to protest without harm, and the termination of violence towards Biafrans. |
