The NYSC Management wishes to inform prospective Corps members and other stakeholders that the 2016 Batch 'B' (Stream II) Orientation course will commence on Tuesday, 24th January, 2017.

The lineup of activities for the course is shown below:

a. Tue 24th - Wed 25th, Jan 2017 - Registration/verification exercise

b. Thursday, 26th January, 2017 - Swearing-in ceremony

c. Monday, 13th February, 2017 - Closing ceremony

Prospective Corps members are advised to report to camp at the scheduled date as registration/verification will end at midnight of January 25, 2017.

All are also to note that original copies of academic credentials and other documents uploaded during the online registration MUST be presented on camp for physical verification.

In addition, all Prospective Corps members MUST present medical certificates from government or military hospitals showing their health status before they will be registered and admitted for the Orientation course.

With a less than 2 years to exit, the European Union Support to Immunization Governance in Nigeria (EU-SIGN) formally launched in Cross River State, Tuesday after 5 years of operating in the state and spending 41 million Naira to support routine immunization activities.

The Head of the EU delegation to Nigeria and the ECOWAS, Ambassador Michel Arrion stated this while addressing attendees at the launch ceremony held at Tinapa in Calabar where he described the official flag off as “A demonstration of good leadership and commitment to improved health status of women and children.”

Represented by the EU program manager on Health, Nutrition and Resilience Dr. Anthony Ayeke, Ambassador Arrion who lauded the state government for implementing the State Primary Health Care Development Act said the EU SIGN project aimed at contributing to the “Reduction of childhood morbidity and mortality due to Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Nigeria through improved governance in the health sector”, adding that, “It is a 7 year 63.5 million Euros project with two components” which he said consisted of a EUR 33.5 million component for support to routine immunization in 23 states and a EUR 30 million component to support Polio Eradication nation-wide and handled by the WHO.

Disclosing that about 41 million Naira representing about EUR 121,000 has been spent in Cross River, Arrion listed out activities sponsored to include capacity training, supply of immunization equipment at NGN28 million (or EUR84,000), provision of computer systems at NGN1.6 million (or EUR5,000) and the provision of one four wheel drive transport vehicle at NGN10.4 million (or EUR31,000) among others.
Cross River Governor, Senator Ben Ayade in his address expressed gratitude that the EU had chosen Cross River State for the EU-SIGN project after the closure of the EU-PRIME program in 2009.

Ayade who was represented by his deputy, Professor Ivara Esu said that; “I am very delighted to learn that EU-SIGN has been carrying out several activities in our state since the inauguration of the project at the federal level.”

He called on them to “Complete some of the uncompleted projects in our state. There are renovation of state cold store, and repair of CCE at the state CCE” and pledged that the state “Will continue to require help to establish our infant State Primary Health Care Development Agency while bringing primary health care under one roof. We hope you will be there and continue to answer us when we come knocking at your gate.”

Also, the Director General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency lauded the EU for their continuous support to routine immunization governance in the state since 2004 and called on them to assist the state in certain areas.

“I want to respectfully remind EU-SIGN to complete the renovation of our state cold store, commission contractor or consultant to repair faulty cold chain equipment, support meetings of Primary Health Care coordinators and CCO’s, support ISS and HF outreaches in all Local government areas and support advocacy for full implementation of Primary Health Care under one roof” Betta said.

THE NEW-NIGERIA PROJECT; A WAKE-UP CALL TO ALL NIGERIAN STUDENTS
In an attempt to critically examine the role of the Nigerian Student in creating a New Nigeria, analytical questions comes to mind in this process of making objective inquiry into the true state of affairs as it affects the idea or notion of the New Nigeria concept. Who is a Nigerian Student? What are the ideas of the New Nigeria Project? What are the factors that lead to the relative success of failure of similar projects? How close or how far are we as a nation in realizing this dream? Are Nigerians involved in making this a reality? These and others are many questions which this essay seeks to tackle, and at the end give a critical examination of major contending issues and draw a reasonable conclusion with emphasis on the roles of every Nigerian Students with the vision and future the nation in her hands.
A Nigerian Student is not just that young man or woman sitting in a classroom, in or outside the territory of the country, or that young boy or girl who is been told continuously that the only way of becoming relevant in the society is to be in a classroom etc. A Nigerian Student is far more than the aforementioned. To set the record straight, a Nigerian Student is the strongest, most-hardworking, smartest, intelligent, dynamic and also a goalgetter. A Nigerian Student strives to achieve greatness not minding the stumbling blocks, which seem taller than an average mountain these days. She is faced with various social, environmental and psychological factors that seek to hinder his or her quest for quality life and making practical contributions to society. In any discipline and part of the world you find a Nigerian Student, he or she always stands-out among her peers from other part of the globe such as America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Their differences can easily be identified through her academic records with other extra curricula activities such as sports, music, acting etc. Some ground breaking achievements that have been made is this regards is quite magnificent, their exploits does not only speak well for the students, but it has over the years been able to place our great nation on the world map and it’s earning us great respect and commendation among the committee of nations. The grand breaking achievement of Emmanuel Ohuabunwa who made a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.98 out of 4.0, making him the first black man to achieve this unimaginable height at John Hopkins University, USA in the Neurosciences. These singular exploit is one amongst many that shows the greatness of Nigerian Students all over the world and how best their unique brain-power can be used to build a New Nigeria.
It is a common phenomenon to see Nigeria been referred to as a nation with one of the world best social and economic plans; through her various set goals and objectives which have been put in place since the attainment of political independence till date with little or absolutely nothing to show for it. Nigeria is undoubtedly one of the most blessed nations on earth, with rich human and natural resources which have been perfectly placed by the Almighty in different locality, areas, states and regions of the country. But over the years, we have continue to dwindle as a nation, with various preventable challenges such as; poor economic performance, insecurity, corruption among the high and low in the society, youth restiveness, religious intolerance, power instability etc. all of these problems continue to steer us straight in the face, without any proper actions been taken by our leaders in all areas of life, be it political, social or even religious gathering. This they have failed in putting the country in the right path of progress in terms of economic development, social and food security, good health care facilities and improved, highly technological advancement educational resources.
With a critical examination of the past events that have led our beloved country to this wrong path, one major problem stands out, that is the non-involvement of the country’s young-minds (youth or Students) in the activities of the nation. Having correctly identified Nigerian Students as problem solvers earlier; it is unfortunate that our leaders have deem it ‘unnecessary’ to involve us in decision making and solving current challenges that affects our national life. This unfortunate position of theirs can be attributed to various erroneous reasoning such as; “they are too small to get involve”, “why should I sit down and watch my little boy lead?” These and others are some of their reasons for shooting-out the Nigerian Student from the picture of making good national policies and the implementation processes. The questions of how well we have fared as a nation with this decision of our past and present leaders has obviously been that of disaster, as such many scholars have either referred to Nigeria as a ‘failed state’ and not too good predictions about the future of the Nigeria State from within and outside the nation.
For the Nigerian Students, we have no other choice than to get ourselves involve and stop waiting for a call that will never come through from our leaders during decision making process; this was made manifest at the just concluded National Conference organized by the Federal Government of Nigeria who deemed it ‘unnecessary’ to involve the Nigerian Students is discussing national issues that will to a great extent define our future existence as a nation. We must as a matter of necessity get involve in steering the ship of our nation to the right path and direction to progress. It is time for our dreams for a New and Better Nigeria to become manifest; a New Nigeria where there will be no more starvation, no more insecurity, no more political and religious violence, no more killings of innocent men and women, no more tribal and ethnic sentiment, no more high rate of maternal and child mortality, no more rigging of elections and imposition of unqualified candidates in areas of our national life.
This call is going out to Musa in the North, Kemi in the West, Obiora in the East and Akpors in the South-South. There’s no more time to continue to dream dreams and live our entire youthful life in the dreamland, rather it is time to share those beautiful dreams about a New Nigeria with one another and play a major role to see to it full realization. The time to wait for invitation to get involve in our own destinies is far gone, with the obvious truth of how relegated Nigerian Students have been pushed to the background over the years. Looking back at history, it is very pertinent to note the various contributions and roles that were played by Nigerian Students both home and abroad in the nationalist struggle for the independent of Nigeria. This gave the colonial masters a tough, time which left them with no other choice rather than to relinquish the mantle of leadership to Nigerians; partially in 1960 and totally in 1963 when our beloved country became a full republic. Following this historical role played by the Nigerian Students of the 1950s and 1960s in the liberation of her nation from foreign rule and exploitation. It is worthy of note that after this period, Nigerian Students have not been given the opportunity to make contributions which would have benefited the country immensely.
In order to correct these ills in our society, the Nigerian Student have a very vital role of salvaging and building a New Nigeria to play through the following but not limited means:
Firstly, the Nigerian Student needs to assume responsibilities of her country‘s affairs in all area of human endeavor. Assuming responsibilities does not necessarily mean taking-over power or managerial positions, rather it means getting directly or indirectly involve. Many Nigerian Students over the years have continue to shy away from responsibilities when they are expected to lead their peers in particular and the nation in general. The reason for this is not far fetch, so therefore, through proper reorientation, the Nigerian Student will play a major role is creating a New Nigeria by getting involve and assuming responsibilities of our country’s affairs.
Secondly, in the New Nigeria project Creation, Nigerian Students need to create an enabling environment by avoiding activities that will lead to chaos is our country, rather our energy should be channel towards making the environment more safe, beautiful and welcoming to visitors from other nations. This can be achieved through education synergy and promotion of the New Nigeria Project amongst ourselves. Using our various clubs and societies as vehicles to as a vehicle to champion this noble course, leaders of Student Union Governments (SUGs) have a very important roles to play in this regards through sensitization of her members and selling the ideas of a better future of our beloved nation through debates of critical issues and policies, pointing out its positive effects to the lives of the students in particular and the nation in general. And not shying away in engaging in political discourse, making rational contributions that will give policy makers an idea of what the people wants and not making policies based on assumptions (as we have today).
Thirdly, the Nigerian Students needs to promote the name of our beloved country Nigeria, as we do not have any other country apart from this one. They should be a high level of patriotism among us all. This will not only promote the New Nigeria Project, but it will also give us a sense of pride and responsibility knowing that we played a major part in building this great nation when we attain the New Nigeria in the nearest future.
Lastly, we have a role of taking our education more seriously, which will enable us to break more bounds and be a leading voice is the international community. Scientific discoveries that will change the world in general will be made in the New Nigeria and this will be led by the Nigerian Students.
In conclusion, the roles of Nigerian Students in creating a New Nigeria cannot be over emphasized, as she will continue to play a major role is sustaining the New Nigeria Project and see to its full realization and maintenance. Despite the current challenges we are now facing as a nation, there is a bright future ahead of us which will be led by the youths of Nigeria. For a fact, there will be no New Nigeria without the involvement of the Nigerian Students.

People tend to be alarmed when the Nigerian Presidency takes certain decisions. They don’t think the decision makes sense. Sometimes, they wonder if something has not gone wrong with the thinking process at that highest level of the country. I have heard people insist that there is some form of witchcraft at work in the country’s seat of government. I am ordinarily not a superstitious person, but working in the Villa, I eventually became convinced that there must be something supernatural about power and closeness to it. I’ll start with a personal testimony. I was given an apartment to live in inside the Villa. It was furnished and equipped. But when my son, Michael arrived, one of my brothers came with a pastor who was supposed to stay in the apartment. But the man refused claiming that the Villa was full of evil spirits and that there would soon be a fire accident in the apartment. He complained about too much human sacrifice around the Villa and advised that my family must never sleep overnight inside the Villa.

I thought the man was talking nonsense and he wanted the luxury of a hotel accommodation. But he turned out to be right. The day I hosted family friends in that apartment and they slept overnight, there was indeed a fire accident. The guests escaped and they were so thankful. Not long after, the President’s physician living two compounds away had a fire accident in his home. He and his children could have died. He escaped with bruises. Around the Villa while I was there, someone always died or their relations died. I can confirm that every principal officer suffered one tragedy or the other; it was as if you needed to sacrifice something to remain on duty inside that environment. Even some of the women became merchants of Love Machine because they had suffered a special kind of death in their homes (I am sorry to reveal this) and many of the men complained about something that had died below their waists too. The ones who did not have such misfortune had one ailment or the other that they had to nurse. From cancer to brain and prostate surgery and whatever, the Villa was a hospital full of agonizing patients.

I recall the example of one particular man, an asset to the Jonathan Presidency who practically ran away from the Villa. He said he needed to save his life. He was quite certain that if he continued to hang around, he would die. I can’t talk about colleagues who lost daughters and sons, brothers and uncles, mothers and fathers, and the many obituaries that we issued. Even the President was multiply bereaved. His wife, Mama Peace was in and out of hospital at a point, undergoing many surgeries. You may have forgotten but after her husband lost the election and he conceded victory, all her ailments vanished, all scheduled surgeries were found to be no longer necessary and since then she has been hale and hearty. By the same token, all those our colleagues who used to come to work to complain about a certain death beneath their waists and who relied on videos and other instruments to entertain wives (take it easy boys, I don’t mean nay harm, I am writing!), have all experienced a re-awakening.
Everyone who went under the blade has received miraculous healing, and we are happy to be out of that place. But others were not so lucky. They died. There were days when convoys ran into ditches and lives were lost. In Norway, our helicopter almost crashed into a mountain. That was the first time I saw the President panicking. The weather was all so hazy and he just kept saying it would not be nice for the President of a country to die in a helicopter crash due to pilot miscalculations. The President went into a prayer mode. We survived. In Kenya once, we had a bird strike. The plane had to be recalled and we were already airborne with the plane acting like it would crash. During the 2015 election campaigns, our aircraft refused to start on more than one occasion. The aircraft just went dead. On some other occasions, we were stoned and directly targeted for evil. I really don’t envy the people who work in Aso Villa, the seat of Nigeria’s Presidency. For about six months, I couldn’t even breathe properly. For another two months, I was on crutches. But I considered myself far luckier than the others who were either nursing a terminal disease or who could not get it up.

When Presidents make mistakes, they are probably victims of a force higher than what we can imagine. Every student of Aso Villa politics would readily admit that when people get in there, they actually become something else. They act like they are under a spell. When you issue a well- crafted statement, the public accepts it wrongly. When the President makes a speech and he truly means well, the speech is interpreted wrongly by the public. When a policy is introduced, somehow, something just goes wrong. In our days, a lot of people used to complain that the APC people were fighting us spiritually and that there was a witchcraft dimension to the governance process in Nigeria. But the APC folks now in power are dealing with the same demons. Since Buhari government assumed office, it has been one mistake after another. Those mistakes don’t look normal, the same way they didn’t look normal under President Jonathan. I am therefore convinced that there is an evil spell enveloping this country. We need to rescue Nigeria from the forces of darkness. Aso Villa should be converted into a spiritual museum, and abandoned.
Should I become President of Nigeria tomorrow, I will build a new Presidential Villa: a Villa that will be dedicated to the all-conquering Almighty, and where powers and principalities cannot hold sway. But it is not about buildings and space, not so? It is about the people who go to the highest levels in Nigeria. I really don’t quite believe in superstitions, but I am tempted to suggest that this is indeed a country in need of prayers. We should pray before people pack their things into Aso Villa. We should ask God to guide us before we appoint ministers. We should, to put it in technocratic language, advise that the people should be very vigilant. We have all failed so far, that crucial test of vigilance. We should have a Presidential Villa where a President can afford to be human and free. In the White House, in the United States, Presidents live like normal human beings. In Aso Villa, that is impossible. They’d have to surround themselves with cooks from their villages, bodyguards from their mother’s clans and friends they can trust. It should be possible to be President of Nigeria without having to look behind one’s shoulders. But we are not yet there. So, how do we run a Presidency where the man in the saddle can only drink water served by his kinsman? No. How can we possibly run a Presidency where every President proclaims faith in Nigeria but they are better off in the company of relatives and kinsmen. No. We need as Presidents men and women who are willing to be Nigerians. No Nigerian President should be in spiritual bondage because he belongs to all of us and to nobody.

Now let me go back to the spiritual dimension. A colleague once told me that I was the most naïve person around the place. I thought I was a bright, smart, professional doing my bit and enjoying the President’s confidence. I spelled it out. But what I got in response was that I was coming to the villa using Lux soap, but that most people around the place always bathed in the morning with blood. Goat blood. Ram blood. Whatever animal blood. I argued. He said there were persons in the Villa walking upside down, head to the ground. I screamed. Everybody looked normal to me. But I soon began to suspect that I was in a strange environment indeed. Every position change was an opportunity for warfare. Civil servants are very nice people; they obey orders, but they are not very nice when they fight over personal interests.

The President is most affected by the atmosphere around him. He can make wrong decisions based on the cloud of evil around him. Even when he means well and he has taken time to address all possible outcomes, he could get on the wrong side of the public. A colleague called me one day and told me a story about how a decision had been taken in the spiritual realm about the Nigerian government. He talked about the spirit of error, and how every step taken by the administration would appear to the public like an error. He didn’t resign on that basis but his words proved prophetic. I see the same story being re-enacted. Aso Villa is in urgent need of redemption. I never slept in the apartment they gave me in that Villa for an hour.

Former special adviser to then president Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, has revealed that every principal officer who served in the Nigerian Presidency suffered one tragedy or the other, describing the Aso Rock Presidential Villa as a hospital full of agonizing patients suffering from cancer to brain and prostate surgery etc.

In an essay published on Friday with the title: ‘The spiritual side of Aso Villa’ the former presidential spokesman called for the nation’s seat of power to be converted into a spiritual museum, and abandoned, adding that if he were to become President, “I will build a new Presidential Villa: a Villa that will be dedicated to the all-conquering Almighty, and where powers and principalities cannot hold sway”.

He stated that while he was in service he could not breathe properly for about six months and was on crutches for another two months, yet he considered himself far luckier than the others who were either nursing a terminal disease or lost their lives.

Abati revealed that the wife of his former principal, Dame Patience Jonathan, who underwent many surgeries as First Lady, was stripped of her ailments after her husband lost the 2015 presidential election and conceded victory to his opponent in that election, as all scheduled surgeries were found to be no longer necessary and since then she has been hale and hearty.

He stated that even the then President wasn’t spared as there was a time he got so panicky after the helicopter they were travelling in almost crashed into a mountain, adding that the president and those he was travelling with had survived a bird strike in Kenya.

All 2016 Batch B Prospective Corps Members who had earlier seen their names on the NYSC Portal, but can no longer see it, should not panic, it means their schools are still uploading because of approval given to them to upload additional records. Once the upload is completed, you will be able to check your names on the NYSC portal.
3. In addition, Prospective corps Members are to note that passport photograph size requirement to be uploaded during the on-line registration must be 2x2 with off-white background colour. Imagine this: An average Nigerian Youth spends 2 years after Secondary School hustling for Admission into Higher Institutions, he/she also spends 5-6 years in school for a four years Degree Program (all thanks to strikes).
After graduation he/she spends another 2years waiting for NYSC Mobilization... Before spending a year 'serving' your nation with little stipend called allowance.
Is this not worse than slavery
