BigSJ: APC governorship candidate Dr Obafemi Hamzat says businesses should know what they pay and proposes State Economic Council to harmonise charges.
Obafemi Hamzat, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for Lagos State, has pledged to end unauthorised levies and multiple taxation if elected governor in 2027.
Hamzat made the pledge on October 1, 2026, during The Platform, an Independence Day programme organised by Covenant Christian Centre that brought together Lagos governorship candidates to engage young voters.
According to reports from TheCable, Premium Times, BusinessDay and Vanguard, Hamzat said his administration would remove levies that are not authorised, not known to government and cannot be tracked.
He said the current system where businesses face different collections from different authorities is hurting small businesses and transport operators. The core of his plan is transparency. Hamzat said businesses and commercial drivers must know exactly what they are required to pay, and once they pay, they should be left alone to operate.
To achieve this, he proposed the creation of a State Economic Council. The council will bring the state government and local governments together to streamline taxes, levies and charges. The idea, he explained, is that both state and local governments serve the same citizens and should not impose overlapping charges.
He also addressed roadside collections by touts, popularly known as agbero. Vanguard reported that Hamzat said commercial transport operators deserve predictable financial obligations and should not face continuous collection points along their routes.
On small businesses, Premium Times and BusinessDay reported that Hamzat said government has a role to ensure businesses start, survive and grow. Part of that is removing untraceable levies and supporting small and medium enterprises with training on bookkeeping and staff management.
The proposal comes as cost of doing business remains a major concern for young Lagosians and business owners in the state. According to INEC final list for the 2027 governorship election as reported by Punch, Hamzat Kadri Obafemi, 62, is listed as the APC candidate for Lagos, with James Damilola Sonayon as his running mate.
