Many within the political class dismissed him as a mere extension of Wike's formidable political architecture, a civil servant elevated to perpetuate dominance rather than to govern independently. Powerful interests, including former allies of Wike and opposition figures who had long sought to dismantle his structure, worked discreetly to frustrate his emergence. Yet the profound irony of Rivers politics is that when the inevitable rupture between godfather and godson became a public conflagration, those same antagonists who opposed Fubara's candidacy emerged from obscurity to perform the role of loyal friends and strategic advisers.

The war between the Simplified Movement and the Wike political family, for all its theatrics, ended with a definitive tilt. With federal backing consolidating around Wike's camp, the structure that had built Rivers politics for over a decade reasserted itself. In that moment of defeat, one would have expected sober introspection within the Simplified fold. Instead, the same chorus of crisis entrepreneurs who had whispered rebellion into Fubara's ear resurfaced with a new script: abandon reconciliation and defect to the NDC as a platform to reignite confrontation with the FCT Minister. Their objective was never peace, but the perpetual monetization of instability.

The psychological projection is staggering.

What Rivers people must fundamentally understand is that reconciliation, whether in politics or in elite sports, is not an event but a process anchored on time and the reconstruction of loyalty. If a man you lifted from obscurity, financed, and enthroned publicly ridicules you, attempts to dismantle your political base, and orchestrates your humiliation, does reconciliation automatically restore him to the same level of blind trust as before? The question answers itself. Those who tell the Simplified group not to trust Wike deliberately invert the moral equation; in truth, it is Wike who has legitimate cause not to trust Fubara and his cohorts, given their demonstrable act of political ingratitude.

Political history offers sobering precedents. Consider the rupture between former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2019. When Ambode attempted to undermine the very structure that brought him to power, Tinubu did not annihilate him. He denied him a second-term ticket a necessary assertion of structure but retained him within the progressive fold as a party man. He was not entrusted with another sensitive elective position immediately. That is not wickedness; that is political discipline. Forgiveness does not equal instant reinstatement.

Consider even our national history. When the Nigerian civil war ended in January 1970 and the Federal Government declared No Victor, No Vanquished, did the Igbos immediately receive all the most sensitive appointments in the federation as proof of genuine reconciliation? No. The healing was gradual, structural, and conditional. The highest national office they attained in the immediate post-war decades was the Vice Presidency under Shehu Shagari, with Alex Ekwueme serving from 1979 to 1983. Reintegration required time, demonstrable loyalty to the federation, and the slow rebuilding of trust.

This is the elementary law of power: when you rebel against a structure and you are defeated, you cannot demand blind trust in the name of peace. Trust is a currency that must be earned twice after it has been squandered. Wike, to his credit, has a documented history of forgiving political enemies and absorbing them into his expansive political network. From former rivals in the old Amaechi era to repentant allies, he has shown a capacity for accommodation. But accommodation is not the same as entrusting the vault to a former burglar.

Therefore, securing certain positions, controlling sensitive political levers, or returning to the inner sanctum of decision-making cannot be automatic. Not because the reconciliation is fake, but because the loyalty ledger is now in deficit. Your previous rebellion has placed a question mark on your reliability, and only consistent, observable loyalty over time can erase that mark. That is political tact, not treachery.

The Simplified group must therefore confront reality with maturity. They are, by every political metric, conquered political foes who have been offered a pathway back into the larger Wike political family for the sake of Rivers State. Reconciliation in this context means reintegration, not restoration to pre-war privileges. Anyone within that camp who imagines that peace means having it all as before the ticket, the structure, the treasury, and the trust is living in a fantasy world where consequences do not exist and where political naivety is mistaken for entitlement.
