Those dealer's who have been doing pre-orders for years now and have been doing so successfully will still be alright with or without the Forum. I will however admit that the forum is a great place to offer our services to those who look for specialty or uniqueness, it is unfortunate that some have chosen to take advantage of this. But truth be told, you can really get scammed by any forum or by anyone if you do not exercise wisdom. As it has been said many times over, IF SOMETHING SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE 9 times out if 10 IT IS. I go back to those of us who have been doing pre-orders successful and who have clients that can attest to our services. Should the "pre-order mess" be exiled or discontinued on this forum, our clients may still choose to pre-order from us and these same clients will tell their friends, colleagues, acquaintances, ect. who may choose to come onto NL to check out the vehicles that we have listed (or we all know too well that Nigeria is a highly referral-based society). Do we now say that we will close the whole Auto section of Nairaland? I think not. In my eyes, the best solution is let it be. I would willingly bet that the ratio of those who have received exceptional services through pre-ordering from dealers on NL to those whom have been scammed is heavily tilted towards the later. When one bank is robbed, other banks take notice and stay on alert, they do not go and completely change the way they do business. Now if more come and say that the scams are becoming rampant in pre-ordering, then I would say we have a means for concern. This is my humble opinion and I in no way am trying to say my heart does not go out to those whom have been scammed by scoundrels. |

I like the idea of having a "Verification Team" but my only reserves are how do we make sure that team itself does not become corrupt? For instance if members of the team are dealers themselves or even have their preferred dealers on NL, this leaves room to deny others whilst promoting others. Basically a huge conflict of interest. We have been selling vehicles through NL for over two years now, though we have been bringing in vehicles into Nigeria for about 6 years now. We have just recently started gaining traction and acquire some high level clients on NL. We felt we were taking all the proper steps by registering with the CAC of Nigeria, paying our taxes, opening bank accounts, hiring a lawyer, etc., yet some have even stated that all this means nothing in terms of proving validity. So what can one do if one is taking all these steps to ensure validity while others have not done so yet are deemed valid? I think the answer to this would be to just keep plugging away honestly and respectfully and the right buyers will come. As I have stated earlier in a previous post, scammers will always have red flags about them or their business, the objective for the buyer is to identify these red flags. Also stated before, if it seems too good to be true than more than likely it IS NOT TRUE. The heartache begins when someone so desperately wants something that they overlook the red flags (i.e. an item that is inexpensively priced in comparison to its value). BOTTOM LINE An authorization team will need to be chosen by the representative buyers (whom can verify transactions carried out on NL) and dealers on NL collectively to avoid "stacking the ballot" in favor of certain dealers as opposed to others; should the need of one be apparent. And the buyer needs to know that they MUST beware in ALL transactions. |

In the Amazon example mentioned above, there are a few "RED FLAGS" that the buyers should have been aware of. Anyone asking you to pay them so they can "avoid paying the appropriate service fees" should have been avoided. If they are trying to circumvent Amazon, don't you think at some point they will try to circumvent you too? If buyers and sellers err on the side of caution, 9 times out of 10 they will be fine. Remember, most con artist will have something fishy about them or their business. |

insight04:You are absolutely right but the fact that a company is willing to register does have to count for something. I mean how many others out there are taking the time to register; further legitimizing their business? As you know it costs money to register and further keep a current status with the CAC. Also, just because a few companies defaulted on their loans and caused the banks to be taken over I think it would be a grave mis-speak to say that all companies registered with the CAC are governed poorly. Just wanted to clarify that. Thanks for your comments though. |
