The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has said on Saturday that about 96 of its members involved in cases of misconduct are to appear before its investigative panel.

Among the cases under investigation by the panel is the one involving a National Youth Service Corps doctor in Ondo State, who used a practice certificate belonging to another doctor in Jos.

Also, in Cross River State, a doctor working in a government establishment was said to have stolen the certificate of a friend who, he claimed, was dead.

Immense pressure from the North and the House of Representatives forced President Goodluck Jonathan to sack his former National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi (retd) and Minister of Defence, Dr. Haliru Bello on Friday.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that Jonathan removed Azazi, who also hails from Bayelsa State like him, in order to appease power brokers in the northern part of the country and angry members of the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

The House had on Tuesday summoned Jonathan and his security chiefs to address it on the worsening state of insecurity in the country.

Ronaldo may miss Tottenham tie

When Jose Mourinho and his boys file out at the Santiago Bernabeu today, the players may still be thinking about their 0-1 loss to Sporting Gijon on Saturday. Victory and not conceding a crucial away goal to Tottenham will also be one of the challenges facing Real Madrid, including the loss of top goal scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese captain may miss the game because of a thigh problem even though Mourinho has said the Portuguese star could be risked if the player agrees to play.

Mourinho also just lost his record of not losing a league match at home for nine years to Gijon -so will the Real players be motivated to win this tie that could see them meeting their fiercest rivals, Barcelona in the semi finals? But that is jumping the gun.

Karim Benzema and Marcelo could also miss out, which means that Mourinho must exact the best from his threadbare squad. The good news is that Gonzalo Higuain is back even though he showed signs of rustiness in the match against Gijon.

Tottenham as always will be expected be at their exuberant best in this their first foray into the Champions League quarter finals. They have already beaten AC Milan and Inter Milan but today's match is against the grand heavyweight of the tournament -nine-time winners at one of the hallowed grounds of football - Santiago Bernebeu. Will the players be frightened unto submission or will the atmosphere lift their game?

Left to Harry Redknapp, their manager, this tie holds no fear, apart from the raft of injuries that Spurs are suffering from presently.

Defenders Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Younes Kaboul were joined by Alan Hutton, who needs surgery for a knee injury on the treatment table. There are also doubts over the fitness of William Gallas but Tom Huddlestone and Gareth Bale should be fit.

Inter have to be careful

Brazilian defender Lucio will sit out the match due to suspension and should be replaced by Ivan Cordoba. Andrea Ranocchia, his partner has been showing his inexperience in recent times so it is left to old warhorse - Raul and the speedy Jefferson Farfan to find the gaps.

Tempestuous meeting almost leads to Jega resignation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Attahiru Jega, came close to resigning on Saturday following a highly charged Security Council briefing, sources say.

According to a source, who was privy to the Saturday night meeting, Mr. Jega had to endure accusations from the security chiefs of failing to utilise their logistical expertise in the botched elections.

The meeting was hastily called after President Goodluck Jonathan returned from Bayelsa State following the news of the initial postponement of the elections.

Also present at the meeting were the vice president, Namadi Sambo, the justice minister, Bello Adoke, the national security adviser, all the military service chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and the director general of the State Security Service.

The source, who did not wish to be named, revealed how tempers began to flare after the security chiefs "ganged up" on Mr. Jega. The INEC chairman is reported to have immediately offered his resignation, which was instantly rejected by the president.

"Not that anybody wanted him to resign, but they wanted to take over the whole logistics but Jega refused outright; that if the job he is doing is not good enough, he will step down," the source said.

"Mr. President did not even want to hear anything like resignation, especially not at such a crucial time."

According to the source, the security chiefs were also dissatisfied with the lengthy accreditation system which they felt would put an unnecessary strain on their deployed staff. The joint chiefs reportedly pushed for a revised system in which accreditation and voting could run simultaneously, but Mr. Jega steadfastly refused.

The overwhelming feeling was reportedly to have a shift in the original Monday date but Mr. Jega said he could only agree provisionally until he had a meeting with political parties and other stakeholders.

The source said that the meeting ended on a lighter note with Mr. Adoke and Mr. Sambo reiterating that everyone felt the INEC chair was doing a good job but should consider outside help for the logistics.

A separate source revealed how Mr. Jega has been resistant to any intervention from security bodies.

"Jega does not want total collaboration; he thinks he knows it all. What I expect Nigerians to ask is where are the vehicles budgeted for? The police have bought theirs, SSS have bought theirs. Where is INEC's?" the source said.

When asked to confirm whether the commission's chairman truly threatened to resign his position due to pressure from the security chiefs and the presidency, his spokesperson, Kayode Idowu, responded, "Did he offer his resignation letter to you?"

He, however, confirmed that there was a Security Council meeting, saying, "there was a meeting. Maybe you should ask those that said he wanted to resign. I wasn't at the meeting and I don't respond to rumours.

"Yes, there was a meeting with the National Security Adviser, a Security Council meeting, but I don't know what they are talking about and I don't talk about rumours."
