Investment / Abuja Airport’s New Terminal To Process 15m Passengers Annually—FAAN by Peter12396(m): 2:48pm On Dec 16, 2018
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)
says the newly completed terminal building at the
Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, will
process 15 million passengers annually when it
begins operations. Mr Saleh Dunoma, the Managing Director of FAAN,
told Newsmen on Sunday in Abuja that the
terminal building was designed essentially to
transport passengers. He said the terminal building would be
inaugurated on Dec. 20 to enhance the
operational capacity of the airport. The FAAN boss disclosed that the current
carrying capacity of the airport was 7.5 million
passengers per annum. He said that the inauguration of the new terminal
would bring about expansion to the airport. He said that passengers would begin to enjoy
comfort and efficient services, saying the terminal
was built and equipped with modern facilities
such as modern check-in, baggage handling and
security facilities. “Currently, Abuja is doing like 7.5 million
passengers annually in the old terminal, both
domestic and international. He said that the nation now had a terminal that
can process 15 million passengers which he
described as a great departure from what it had
before. “It is essentially designed for passengers, it is not
the kind of terminal where you have several
offices and aviances, it is just designed for
passenger purposes and duty offices only. “So, most of the offices are going to remain in the
old facility and then we will provide posts for the
agencies that will participate in the processing of
passengers. “All the passenger-handling facilities like the
modern security equipment that are important
for security are available in the new terminal. “We have modern check-in facility, we have
modern baggage handling facility, and we have
modern security surveillance gadget in the
terminal. “It is a lot of departure from what we had in the
existing facility and the arrangement is for the
passenger-flow to be more efficient than what
we had in the old terminal building,’’ he said. Dunoma said that there were plans to make sure
that the old and new terminals work together to
ensure connectivity. According to him, the authority will change its
modalities of operations by providing free
trolleys and WiFi services for all passengers in the
new terminal. He added that the new terminal would attract
more passengers and patronage from more
international airlines. He said that there had been applications for
additional frequencies into Abuja by some
airlines. The FAAN boss said that authority had decided
to delay granting such approvals because of the
limited capacity and in order not to create
congestions pending when the new facility
would become operational. NAN reports that the Abuja Airport is one of the
four new terminals being constructed at the cost
of $600 million by the China Civil Engineering
and Construction Company (CCECC) under the
Export-Import Bank of China loan. The others are in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano
and are being financed from the $500 million
loan from China-Exim bank and $100 million
counterpart funding from the Federal
Government. President Muhammadu Buhari had in October
inaugurated the one in Port Harcourt while the
remaining two are expected to be opened for
operations in 2019.

and (b) or the formation of any plan or scheme for
the development, improvement, of Ajaokuta Steel
Company project. Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who
presided, said that the Bill if signed into law would
go a long way to facilitate the quick completion of
the Ajaokuta Steel complex. The Senate also adopted the Presidential
Programme on Rehabilitation and Reintegration
(establishment and implementation) Bill 2018. The Bill provides legal instrument to implement the
Presidential Amnesty programme in the area of
disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.
Investment / Kian Smith Begins Construction Of Nigeria’s First Gold Refinery by Peter12396(m): 7:18pm On Dec 13, 2018
A groundbreaking by the Minister of State for
Mines and Steel Development held today in Ogun
State …refinery to be completed by end of H1
2019 …More than 500,000 jobs to be created in
two years …The refinery to start with production
capacity of 3 tonnes per month of 99.99%
gold and 1 ton per month production of
99.99% silver. History was made in Nigeria on Thursday, as the
country celebrated the ground breaking of its
first gold refinery by the Minister of State for Mines
and Steel Development Hon. Abubakar Bawa
Bwari. The refinery being developed by
indigenous minerals company Kian Smith Trade & Co Ltd. (“Kian Smith”) in Ogun State is scheduled
to start production in 2019, sourcing most of its
ore from miners in the country. “The present administration is determined to
develop the mining sector to act as a catalyst for
sustainable economic growth of the country,”
said Hon. Bwari at the groundbreaking
ceremony. “Part of our marching orders in the Mines and
Stell Development ministry is that we are
expected to develop the sector to increase its
contribution to the nation’s GDP, improve its
capacity to create jobs and engender sustainable
mining,” the minister added, stressing that it was in keeping with his ministry’s mandate that a
roadmap was developed for the growth and
development of the mining sector. “During the focus labs of the Economic Recovery
and Growth Plan (ERGP) of this administration, we
discovered that a well organised gold value chain
can trigger an economic revolution like it did in
India, South Africa, Switzerland and others,” he
said further. He noted that the ministry has continued to work in this light to develop a gold
value chain for the country. The refinery will start with a production capacity
of 3 tonnes per month of 99.99% gold and 1 ton
per month production of 99.99% silver. “We will be supplying the Central Bank, the
Jewellery and the Electronic Industry,” said Nere
Teriba, Vice Chairman of Kian Smith at the
groundbreaking ceremony. “We have already
secured a significant monthly supply of gold from
Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, Niger, Kaduna, Ibadan, Ile-Ife, Ilesha and about 100kg per month from
other parts of Africa. We are presently finalizing
supply agreements and terms from suppliers in
Kano. Next week, we will be securing supply
from Kogi State,” she added. According to Teriba, the refinery when
completed will provide more than 500,000 jobs
in two years as it continues to support its
suppliers in their bid to become registered
business entities in the mining sector. “There’s at presently at least 1,000,000
unregistered business participants in the
Nigerian market (considering gold miners,
sponsors, dealers, processors, aggregators and
gold-workers). The formalization, organization
and development we bring to the value chain will provide quick wins to the Nigerian economy,”
Teriba said. Also speaking, the Governor of Ogun State Sen.
Ibikunle Amosu, who was represented by the
Commisoner for Agriculture Adepeju Adebajo
expressed enthusiasm about the refinery project
which she said was in line with the state
government’s industrialization plan. According to her, the project is a major boost to the Nigerian
mining sector. “Apart from the fact that the
strengthening of our mining industry will reduce
importation of refined products, it will go a long
way in affirming our country’s status as a world
mining power.” The vice chairman of Kian Smith Nere Teriba said
the refinery will be ready to start production by
the end of the first half of 2019.

Business / Why Ghana Cedi Look Stronger Than Naira by Peter12396(m): 8:41am On Dec 13, 2018
The Ghana cedi (currency sign: GH₵; currency
code: GHS) is the unit of currency of Ghana. It is
the fourth and only legal tender in the Republic of
Ghana. One Ghana cedi is divided into one
hundred pesewas (Gp). After it gained independence Ghana separated
itself from the British West African pound, which
was the currency of the British colonies in the
region. The new republic's first independent
currency was the Ghanaian pound (1958-1965).
In 1965, Ghana decided to leave the British colonial monetary system and adopt the widely
accepted decimal system. The African name Cedi
(1965-1967) was introduced in place of the old
British pound system. Its first president Kwame
Nkrumah introduced Cedi notes and Pesewa
coins in July 1965 to replace the Ghana pounds, shillings and pence. The cedi was equivalent to
eight shillings and four pence (8s 4d) and bore
the portrait of the President After a military coup the new leaders wanted to
remove the face of Nkrumah from the banknotes.
The new cedi (1967-2007) was worth 1.2 cedi
which made it equal to half of a pound sterling at
its introduction. After decades of high inflation
had devalued the new cedi, it was gradually phased out in 2007 in favor of the Ghana cedi at
an exchange rate of 1:10,000. In 2007 the largest of the new cedi banknotes, the 20,000
note, had a value of about US$2. By removing
four digits the Ghana cedi became the highest-
denominated currency unit issued in Africa. It has since lost about 80% of its value.

Note;ghana cedi is not stronger than naira they just removed four zeros to avoid their currency not to be like zimbabwe dollar by devaluation

Technology Market / Why We Suspended Licensing Of 26ghz, 38ghz, 42ghz Frequency Bands —NCC by Peter12396(m): 10:09am On Dec 07, 2018
ABUJA—The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Prof.
Danbatta says the Commission took the decision
to suspend the licensing of some of the potential
frequency bands of 26GHz, 38GHz and 42Ghz to
ensure that Nigeria is not caught napping when
the frequency bands are eventually harmonised for 5G deployment in region 1 by standardization
bodies. •Danbatta made the revelation at the
stakeholders consultative forum organised by
the NCC on 5G readiness and High Altitude
Platform Station Technologies, HAPS held in
Abuja. He explained that though, the 5G framework is
still being defined by the ITU, the Commission
had to take the bull by the horn to ensure
Nigeria’s readiness for the imminent 5G evolution
by putting in place necessary regulatory
frameworks so as to flow in the wave of the trend. According to him, the Commission decided to
organise the forum in order to gather relevant
inputs to be considered in developing regulatory
framework in preparation for 5G and HAPS
technologies because it considered 5G networks
as the next generation of connectivity in the telecommunications industry.

Technology Market / Edo Switches To Tech-based Governance by Peter12396(m): 4:00pm On Dec 01, 2018
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has
lauded the Edo State government’s commitment
to digitising governance and enthroning a new
era that will engender open and transparent
processes in government business. Jacob described Obaseki as a genuine leader
who is committed to lasting legacies via policies
that are beneficial to the people of the state. “Under this administration we are seeing good
leadership, we can see genuine commitment and
determination; we are seeing the pursuit of
legacies via articulate policies, beneficial
programmes and initiatives.” He added that he has seen the massive “road
construction and rehabilitation works across the
state without any noise made about the
projects.” Mr Jacob explained that they were in
Government House to brief the governor on the
ongoing initiative and programme of the
commission in Edo State, called the Business
Incentive Strategy (BIS), an initiative put in place
to supplement the federal government’s policy on ease of doing business and efforts at
encouraging and developing Micro, Small, and
Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria. “It is a three-month window created for direct
registration of business names at a reduced cost
of N5,000. It is to ensure and encourage
formalisation and registration of Business names
at a reduced rate of 50 percent registration fee,
from N10,000” he said. In his response, Governor Obaseki, said his
administration has embraced digital technology
to enable it compete globally with other
progressive institutions, societies, states and
nations around the world. He further said that his administration has
entered into a partnership with reputable
organisations to lay fibre optic cables across the
state, starting from Benin City to rank among
cities in Nigeria where digital access will be wide
spread. “We are stepping up our game as a state and
moving our whole platform of governance to
digital platform for transparency and efficiency
that come with digitalisation. Any society or
institution that expects to compete globally must
embrace digital technology”. He commended the group for the Business
Incentive Strategy (BIS) programme which he
noted, would encourage small businesses to
formalise their operations and assured that his
administration would work with the CAC on the
project.
Politics / Former US president George H.W. Bush dies at 94 by Peter12396(m): 9:48am On Dec 01, 2018
Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, who
presided over the end of the Cold War and routed
Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi army died on Friday night
at the age of 94, a family spokesman said. George H.W. Bush Bush, the 41st president of the United States,
lived longer than any of his predecessors. His
death at 10:10 p.m. Central time was announced
in a statement issued by longtime spokesman Jim
McGrath. Bush lost a chance for a second term after
breaking a no-new-taxes pledge. But his son
who bears his name, came in as the 43rd
President after the era of Bill Clinton . The death was also announced by his family
Friday night on Twitter. “George Herbert Walker Bush, World War II naval
aviator, Texas oil pioneer, and 41st President of
the United States of America, died on November
30, 2018. He was 94 and is survived by his five
children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren,
eight great-grandchildren, and two siblings,” the former president’s office said in a statement. “He was preceded in death by his wife of 73
years, Barbara; his second child Pauline “Robin”
Bush; and his brothers Prescott and William or
“Bucky” Bush.” His son George W. Bush, who served as the
country’s 43rd president, released a statement of
his own from the family. “Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to
announce that after 94 remarkable years, our
dear Dad has died,” George W. Bush said. Bush was a man of the highest
character and the best dad a son or daughter
could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion
of those who have cared and prayed for Dad,
and for the condolences of our friends and fellow
citizens.” Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital
with a blood infection on April 22 — two days
after the funeral for his wife of 73 years, former
first lady Barbara Bush. He is survived by his five children, including
former President George W. Bush and former
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Bush was with his wife when she died at the age
of 92 on April 17. “He of course is broken-hearted to lose his
beloved Barbara, his wife of 73 years. He held her
hand all day and was at her side when [she] left
this good earth,” a statement from his office said
after her death. “But it will not surprise all of you
who know and love him, that he also is being stoic and strong, and is being lifted up by his
large and supportive family.”`(Reuters/ABC

Technology Market / NAIJA Are You Ready? Super-fast 5G Internet By 2020 by Peter12396(m): 8:13pm On Nov 30, 2018
“NCC is already working on the three key
factors that will drive 5G deployments,
which include infrastructure, spectrum and
regulation ahead of the 2020 rollout date" If you thought that your 4G broadband is fast,
wait until you experience a 5G connection. And that won’t be long in coming as Nigeria
has started trial of the roll-out plan of 5G
networks with the 26GHz, 38GHz and 42GHz
spectrum bands beginning with the Eko
Atlantic Project. Nigeria’s telecom regulator, the Nigerian
Communications Commission, NCC, who
disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday during a
collaborative meeting with GSMA for 5G rollout
in Nigeria, said roll-out will start by 2020. The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar
Danbatta, said 5G broadband data will drive
connectivity and allow humans to interact with
connected devices to check their health status
and remotely control home appliances. Also Read: Arm Yourself While You Can Danbatta acknowledged the deficit in
infrastructure rollout and spectrum availability
in the country but added that the NCC was
already working to address the challenges. He said NCC would begin with the available
26GHz, 38GHz and 42GHz to drive 5G rollout in
the country. “NCC is already working on the three key
factors that will drive 5G deployments, which
include infrastructure, spectrum and regulation
ahead of the 2020 rollout date. “We will rely on existing policies and regulation
and still come up with additional policies and
regulation that will address any hiccups,”
Danbatta said.
Religion / I’m A Descendant Of Abraham – Buhari by Peter12396(m): 5:43pm On Nov 30, 2018
Ahead of the 2019 general elections, President
Muhammadu Buhari has advised politicians not
to politicize the election by introducing division
between the two dominant religious groups in
the country, the Christians and Muslims. President Buhari in an opinion piece published in
Church Times of UK described himself as a Muslim
and descendant of Abraham, stated that Nigeria
has the largest Christian population in the
continent. He said that he had come under heavy attack as
someone that wants to Islamize Nigeria despite
the fact that the Boko Haram sect has accused
him of being against Islam, adding that the Vice
President, Yemi Osinbajo that is a devout Christian
has also been accused of being lukewarm by selling out his religion in support of him (Buhari) The President said, “In 1844, the Revd Samuel
Ajayi Crowther returned home to Yoruba land
(now part of modern-day Nigeria). Twenty years
earlier, he had been kidnapped and sold to
European slave traders who were bound for the
Americas. He was freed by an abolitionist naval patrol, and received by the Church Missionary
Society. There, he found his calling. “Crowther made his voyage home to establish
the first Anglican mission in Yoruba land. He came
with the first Bibles translated into Yoruba and
Hausa languages. He opened dialogue and
discussion with those of other faiths. And his
mission was a success: Crowther later became the first African Anglican bishop in Africa. “Today, Nigeria has the largest Christian
population on the continent. The messages and
teachings of Christianity are part of the fabric of
each person’s life. “Along with the millions of Christians in Nigeria
today, I believe in peace, tolerance, and
reconciliation; in the institution of the family, the
sanctity of marriage, and the honour of fidelity; in
hope, compassion, and divine revelatio. “Like Bishop Crowther, I am a descendant of
Abraham; unlike him, I am a Muslim. I believe our
two great religions can not only peacefully
coexist but also flourish together. But Muslims
and Christians must first turn to one another in
compassion. For, as it says in Amos 3.3: “Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to
meet?” “As they are People of the Book, I believe that
there is far more that unites Muslims and
Christians than divides them. In fact, I believe that
the messages of the Bible are universal: available
for anyone to exercise, and instructive to all. “We must resist the temptation to retreat into our
communities, because, if we do, we can only look
inwards. It is only when we mix that we can
reach new and greater possibilities. “Whichever religion or religious denomination
they choose to follow, Nigerians are devout.
Anything that Nigerians believe will place
impositions on their practice, and belief is
therefore sure to cause widespread alarm. “And, unfortunately, there are those who seek to
divide Nigerians — and our two great religions
— and to do so for their own advantage. “I stand accused — paradoxically — of trying to
Islamise Nigeria while also being accused by
Boko Haram terrorists of being against Islam. My
Vice-President is a devout man, a Christian
pastor. He, too, is accused of selling out his
religion, because of his support for me. “This is not the first time that I — or, indeed, my
Christian-Muslim evenly split cabinet — have
been the subject of such nonsense. Fortunately,
the facts speak differently from the words of
those who seek to divide us from one another. “Since my administration has been in power,
Boko Haram has been significantly and fatally
degraded; I have befriended church leaders and
church groups both within and outside our
country; my Vice-President has addressed and
opened dialogue with Muslims up and down our land. “In all things, we seek that which all well-
meaning Christians and well-meaning Muslims
must seek: to unite, respect, and never to divide.
Does it not say “There is no compulsion in
religion” (Qur’an 2.256)? Does it not say “Forbid
him not: for he that is not against us is for us” (Luke 9.50)? This, surely, is the path that
followers of both our two great religions must
walk “Unfortunately, those who wish us all to walk
apart have recently found another focus for their
efforts: the tragic clashes between nomadic
herdsmen and settled farmers in the central
regions of Nigeria. “For generations, herders have driven their cattle
from the north to the centre of our country; they
tend to be predominantly Muslim, although not
exclusively. The farmers, in certain areas of
central Nigeria, are predominantly Christian. “The causes of this conflict are not religious or
theological, but temporal. At the heart of this
discord is access to rural land, exacerbated both
by climate change and population growth. “Sadly, there are some who seek to play fast and
loose and so make others believe that these are
not the facts. When religion is claimed as the
cause — and by those who know that it is not —
it only makes finding a resolution more difficult. “The government has taken action to mediate, to
bring the two groups together in peace and
unity. But we also need all parties to follow the
teachings of the scriptures, and encourage
reconciliation rather than cause division. As it is
said: “Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear?” (Mark 8.18). “As our constitution codifies, politicising religion
has no place in Nigeria; for it makes us turn away
from one another; it makes us retreat into our
communities and walk different paths. “I believe that there is a better way. To those who
seek to divide, I still hold my hand out in
brotherhood and forgiveness. I ask only that
they stop, and instead encourage us to turn
towards one another in love and compassion.
Nigeria belongs to all of us. This is what I believe.”

Crime / Ringleader Of Yahoo Plus Gang That Kidnapped, Killed DELSU Student Slumps, Dies by Peter12396(m): 7:14pm On Nov 29, 2018
THE mastermind of the Yahoo Plus gang that
abducted and murdered a 300-level student of
Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Elozino
Ogege, has slumped and died However, there is an unconfirmed report that
gangsters beheaded a 12-year-old girl, Eguono,
at Oghara, the country home of former governor
of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, Thursday, less
than two weeks after suspected Yahoo Plus boys
decapitated a woman. The gang leader of Elozino’s murder allegedly
slumped and died when police detectives
trapped him at his hideout in Abraka, but four
other suspects, including an herbalist, two
private security guards are in police custody at
the Police Headquarters, Asaba, Delta State. Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Delta
Command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the
death of the mastermind to Vanguard. While two of the suspects, a private security
guard and internet fraudster, who spoke to our
reporter, admitted they participated in the crime,
the herbalist and private security supervisor
spoke tongue in cheek. DSP Aniamaka disclosed that police arrested a
sixth suspect, a little girl used by the mastermind
as red herring to make phone, but the police
believe she is a victim. “The mastermind known to be a fraudster just
returned from Ghana, we made efforts to pick
him, but it was not easy, but what was in our
favour was our promptness, the speed with
which we worked. Between the Thursday that
incident happened and Saturday, we have got most of the suspects. “Yes, one of them slumped; in fact, the master
mind knowing that we have got him slumped
and gave up the ghost. “Quickly, the second fraudster, Desmond, was
caught and he told us he had been engaged in
four previous cases. He identified the herbalist
that they take the body parts of female folk to for
ritual,” he said. Desmond admitted to Vanguard that he is an
internet fraudster and it was the herbalist that
asked them to get the eyes, breasts and hearts of
their victims for charms that will make any white
man accept whatever they tell them in their line of
business. The herbalist denied the allegation, but Desmond
insisted they bring body parts to him after killing
their victims. The security guard, Onos who was in possession
of Elozino’s phone that enabled the police to
track him, confessed that his supervisor engaged
him to work for the gang, but the supervisor,
Nwaosisi, denied the charge. However, Onos said his boss tactically deployed
him to work with the gang and was sorry for
participating in the crime.

Education / Buhari Reduces Cost Of UTME, SSCE Forms by Peter12396(m): 4:09pm On Nov 28, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has reduced the cost of forms for some terminal examinations like the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, organised by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Examination Council, as well as the Basic Education Certificate Examination. This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, after the Federal Executive Council meeting in State House, Abuja. According to Tolu Ogunlesi, the Head of Digital Communications for President Buhari, on his Twitter handle, @toluogunlesi, who shared the news, the reduction will take effect from January 2019. He tweeted, “President Buhari has approved the reduction in the cost of Forms for JAMB UTME, NECO SSCE and the Basic Education Certificate Examination. With effect from January 2019, the cost of JAMB UTME Form will drop from N5,000 to N3,500. NECO will drop from N11,350 to N9,850. “Minister of Education Adamu Adamu announced this just now at today’s #FECBrief. He said President Buhari directed the Ministry to look into the reduction following the significant improvement in revenues being remitted to the Treasury by the Education Agencies. “The Exam Agencies are not meant to be revenue generating bodies, they’re only supposed to cover costs/operating expenses. The sharp increase in remittances by JAMB(from less than N60m in 2010–2016 to >N15 BILLION in 2017/18) have shown that the fees being charged could be reduced.”
