Science/TechnologySolar Eclipse Hits Nigeria (Video) by Petmax(op): 1:42pm On Sep 01, 2016
The much awaited partial Solar Eclipse also known as the annular eclipse finally occurred on Thursday September 1, 2016 as predicted.

The eclipse was captured in Lagos at about 8.35am though it was expected to have been seen in the city as at 7:14 am with a peak at 8:26 am.

At about the same time, viewers in the nation’s capital Abuja, gathered at the National Space Research and Development Agency to view the sight.

The annular eclipse was obstructed by a cloudy sky for much of the time, which made it difficult to clearly see the rare occurrence by viewers in some parts of the country.

PoliticsNigeria, UK Sign Agreement On Stolen Assets by Petmax(op): 2:19pm On Aug 31, 2016
The government of the United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to recovering and returning stolen assets to Nigeria.

It says returning the funds to Nigeria will send a clear message to all who may seek to harbour stolen assets overseas that there is ‘no safe haven’ in the United Kingdom.

The Minister of State for Immigration of the United Kingdom, Mr Robert Goodwill, briefed reporters in Abuja about the agreement shortly before signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Mr Goodwill announced that 40 jurisdictions including British Overseas Territories would share beneficial ownership information relating to companies, trusts and foundations in order to expose owners of stolen assets.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria assured Nigerians that returned assets would not be misappropriated again.

Efforts of the current administration of Muhammadu Buhari to recover Nigeria’s assets stolen and taken to the UK were heightened at the anti-corruption summit held in London where the President made an emphatic call for the funds to be returned to the oil rich nation.

President Buhari told the summit that he was more interested in repatriating Nigeria’s stolen assets than any apology from British Prime Minister, David Cameron, following sour remarks ahead of the Anti-Corruption Summit.

PoliticsNigeria's Economy Slides Into Recession - NBS by Petmax(op): 1:08pm On Aug 31, 2016
Nigeria's economy has slid into recession after negative growth in the first two quarters of the year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday.

Nigeria, Africa's top economy, has been battered by low oil prices hammering government revenues, weakening the national currency and driving up inflation to an 11-year high.

"In the second quarter of 2016, the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declined by -2.06 percent (year-on-year) in real terms," the NBS said.

"This was lower by 1.70 percentage points from the growth rate of 0.36 percent recorded in the preceding quarter, and also lower by 4.41 percentage points from the growth rate of 2.35 percent recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2015," it said.

Foreign AffairsAustralia Challenges Mugabe To Stop Harassing Protesters by Petmax(op): 12:44pm On Aug 30, 2016
The Australian embassy in Harare has challenged President Robert Mugabe to ensure law enforcement agencies respect the country's Constitution which guarantees freedom of expression.

The embassy said the Canberra government was worried about the use of force by the police against Zimbabweans demonstrating "peacefully" against the government.

Zimbabweans have lately staged a series of protests against President Mugabe's government and demanding the veteran leader's exit from power for allegedly ruing the once-promising country.

Despite being authorised by the courts, most of the protests have been brutally crushed by the police using tear gas batons and water cannons.

In a statement following last Friday's violence in Harare, Australia ambassador to Zimbabwe Suzzane MacCourt said she had been monitoring the protests great concern.

She said Harare should respect "people's democratic right to stage peaceful demonstrations which are guaranteed by the constitution".

"The Australian Embassy shares the concerns of many Zimbabweans at the violence which has occurred over recent weeks in Zimbabwe. The use of violence is not acceptable under any circumstance," said the envoy.

PoliticsNickel Discovered In Dangoma, Kaduna, Nigeria by Petmax(op): 1:35pm On Aug 29, 2016
Mining industry veteran Hugh Morgan heads a private syndicate that has made a potentially world class, and highly unusual, nickel discovery in the heart of Nigeria.

The discovery is unusual because the nickel is found in small balls up to 3mm in diameter of a high purity in shallow soils in what could be the surface expression of a much bigger hard-rock nickel field.

The nickel balls, rumoured to grade better than 90 per cent nickel and thought to be a world first given their widespread distribution, offer the potential for early cashflow from a simple and low-cost screening operation to fund a full assessment of the find that has exploration circles buzzing.

Details on the find are sketchy. When asked to comment last week, Mr Morgan would only say it was for the Nigerian government to make an announcement.

Nickel is no stranger to the Liberal Party bulwark and former Reserve Bank board member. Between 1990 and 2003 he was chief executive of Western Mining Corporation (taken over by BHP Billiton in 2005) when it was Australia’s biggest nickel producer.

What is known is that Nigeria’s Minister for Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi, is listed to speak at the three-day Africa Down Under mining conference at Perth’s Pan Pacific Hotel next month, with past conferences drawing bumper crowds.

Dr Fayemi is to speak first on Wednesday September 7, and Mr Morgan will follow along with consulting geologist Louisa Lawrance. Mr Morgan is listed as speaking as a director of the private company Comet Minerals.

The discovery, Titan, is rumoured to be close to Dangoma, a small farming town about 160km northeast of the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

Dr Fayemi is one of 13 African mines ministers to attend this year’s Africa Down Under, reflecting the importance African nations place on attracting Australian mining expertise and funding for mining.

Nigeria itself has a stated ambition to grow its mining sector as an offset to its dependence on the oil industry, which has been ravaged by the slump in prices.

It has said it wants to attract billions of dollars of new investment in the sector, a push that could benefit from likely international interest in the Titan find by Mr Morgan’s private syndicate.

Earlier this month, Dr Fayemi told Bloomberg that about $US5 billion would “kickstart the mining sector”.

“In two to five years, we want to have started production of iron ore, lead, zinc, bitumen, nickel, coal and gold at a serious scale,” he said.

A chief on Saturday evening collapsed and died at a popular bar in Nyahururu Town in Laikipia County, Kenya.

Confirming the incident, Nyandarua North Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Timon Odingo said that the man identified as Mr Samuel Mangu Kahiru, 50, who was the chief of Madaraka in Ol Joro Orok Constituency, Nyandarua County collapsed as he stood near the entrance of the bar.

Scotland and Canada will allow police officers to wear hijabs on the job in a bid to attract more Muslim women to join their forces.

Both countries announced their policy changes this week amid controversy over a French town’s ban on burkinis, which was overturned by the country’s highest administrative court on Friday.

Scotland police said in a statement it hoped the policy change “will contribute to making our staff mix more diverse and adds to the life skills, experiences and personal qualities that our officers and staff bring to policing the communities of Scotland.”

Foreign AffairsAmerica Are Within Striking Range Of North Korea - Kim Jong-un by Petmax(op): 2:06pm On Aug 25, 2016
The U.S. mainland is now 'within striking range' of North Korea after a successful ballistic missile test, the authoritarian nation's state news agency said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un hailed yesterday's submarine-launched missile test as the 'greatest success' and was seen celebrating with generals shortly afterwards.

The missile was fired from a submarine submerged off the northeastern port of Simpo, flying 300 miles towards Japan - far exceeding the range of any previous tests.

The UN met last night but is yet to publicly condemned the launch, which is effectively a test of Pyongyang's nuclear strike capability.

Kim was reported by North Korea's state news agency KCNA as declaring the test 'the greatest success' and said it put the reclusive nation in the 'front rank' of nuclear powers.

'A test-fire of strategic submarine-launched ballistic missile was successfully conducted under the guidance of supreme commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Un,' the report said.

'He appreciated the test-fire as the greatest success and victory. He noted with pride that the results of the test-fire proved in actuality that the DPRK joined the front rank of the military powers fully equipped with nuclear attack capability.

'I do not guess what ridiculous remarks the U.S. and its followers will make about this test-fire, but I can say their rash acts will only precipitate their self-destruction,' the KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

The UN Security Council met for two hours last night to discuss the latest provocation by North Korea, which is likely to lead to further economic sanctions.

Earlier this month, North Korea fired a land-launched ballistic missile directly into Japanese-controlled waters for the first time, drawing outrage from Tokyo.

InvestmentSwitzerland Enlists Robots To Help Deliver Mail by Petmax(op): 2:49pm On Aug 24, 2016
Swiss Post, the national postal service in Switzerland, will test robots next month in three cities to deliver food and medicine. The robots, which are small, six-wheeled pods, travel slowly on sidewalks. They're designed to avoid obstacles, including pedestrians, animals and cars.

The robots, which come from Starship Technologies, are already being tested in Britain and Germany. They will also be tested in Washington, D.C. this fall.

But don't expect deliverymen across Switzerland to disappear anytime soon.

"We don't believe in substituting the human being part," said Claudia Pletscher, the head of development programs and innovation at Swiss Post. Pletscher added that the ground robots will be delivering dummy packages for now -- not your prescriptions just yet.

InvestmentMIT Scientists Think They Can Make Your Wifi 10x Faster by Petmax(op): 6:17pm On Aug 23, 2016
Getting good WiFi at a sporting event isn't easy. But researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory think they've solved this problem.

In crowded areas -- be it a concert, airport, conference hall or sports stadium -- a bunch of wireless routers need to be installed to deliver Internet access to everyone.

Having so many routers can create interference, leaving a frustrated crowd with painfully slow Internet access.

In a new paper published online, the MIT team described a method for managing networks that causes the routers to collaborate better.

The researchers developed algorithms that process a router's signal so that multiple routers can send information on the same wireless spectrum without causing interference. In their tests, the MIT researchers found data transfer speeds that were 3.3 times as fast as usual.

BusinessYou Can't Use This App If You're Over 21 by Petmax(op): 8:33am On Aug 23, 2016
Facebook recently launched yet another app targeted toward the demographic (teens) called Lifestage. The video-only social network, which is now available for download only via the Apple App Store, looks and works a lot like Snapchat.

Want to share a video of your meal? Lifestage encourages you to take a video of it and slap a picture frame-like design on top. You can also take videos that fall into other categories such as Likes, Dislikes, Music and Books.

But unlike Snapchat, you don't share the videos with friends -- instead, they visit your profile page for your latest clips, and the videos don't seem to disappear after 24 hours.

Facebook Lifestage
Facebook is going back to its roots by permitting only a certain demographic to use the platform, too; users must under 21 to access Lifestage. However, we were able to fudge our age when signing up and were able to use it with no issue.

PoliticsFG Opens Apapa-ijora Bridge In Lagos by Petmax(op): 11:13am On Aug 22, 2016
The Federal Government of Nigeria at the weekend opened the Apapa-Ijora Bridge in Lagos State to light traffic, as the emergency repair works on the bridge are almost completed.

It was shut on Monday, August 8, for emergency repair works on its failed sections and temporary coverage of the failed concrete bridge deck section.

The decision was taken after an inspection tour and a meeting with stakeholders by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola.

With consistent attention from the contracting firm, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and supervisory work by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, work on the temporary coverage of the failed concrete bridge deck section was completed on Saturday including the approach to the bridge.

Also completed was the placement of height restriction gantry in order to ensure only light traffic could access the bridge.

The bridge is now open to light traffic while repair works continue on the diversions.

Motorist, who work in and around Apapa axis, could now use the Apap-Ijora bridge after it was closed for rehabilitation.

Many of them had thought that the repairs would take some time, considering the nation’s revenue base that has continued to dwindle with the drop in crude oil price.

After the initial worries about the failing concrete deck of some parts of the bridge, Mr Fashola said the construction company had carried out a reinforcement work which is capable of supporting light vehicular traffic.

He insisted that it was better for Nigerians to endure the pains that the closure had caused than for tragedy to occur.

It was danger waiting to happen and would have, in its wake, been colossal.

The reasons were not farfetched, as the bridge had over the years been subjected to daily heavy load of container bearing trucks and petroleum products tankers.

The 40-year-old bridge remained, for a very long time, the only major entry and exit from Apapa and the consequence became very evident.

After concerns were raised about the deplorable state, the Federal Government took a tough decision to shut it down for emergency rehabilitation work.

Foreign AffairsChina Opens Longest Glass Bottom Bridge In The World by Petmax(op): 8:30pm On Aug 20, 2016
Tourists who suffer from vertigo need not apply. The world’s highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge opened Saturday in China’s spectacular Zhangjiajie mountains — the inspiration for American blockbuster Avatar.

Some 430 metres (1,400 feet) long and suspended 300 metres above the earth, the bridge spans the canyon between two mountain cliffs in Zhangjiajie park in China’s central Hunan province.

Six metres wide and made of some 99 panels of clear glass, the bridge can carry up to 800 people at the same time, an official in Zhangjiajie — a popular tourist destination — told the Xinhua news agency.

Tourists can walk across the bridge, designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, and the more adventurous will be able to bungee jump or ride a zip line.

“I wanted to feel awe-inspired by this bridge. But I’m not afraid — it seems safe!” Wang Min, who was visiting the new structure with her husband and children, told AFP Saturday.

InvestmentThe Investing App Military Families Love by Petmax(op): 9:36pm On Aug 19, 2016
Wall Street banks prefer clients with millions -- if not billions -- to invest. Soldiers, nurses and construction workers typically aren't anywhere near that wealthy.

That's why a growing number of average Joes are turning to an app called Stash instead. On Stash, you can start investing with just $5. The company's motto is "investing for real people."

"Lots of our users start investing with less than $100. For us, that's great because they've taken that first step. They're learning," says Brandon Krieg, co-founder and CEO of Stash.

Stash launched last fall. It already has over 150,000 users. About 10% of those are active-duty military, says Krieg. It's a high percentage considering less than half a percent of the U.S. population overall currently serves in the armed forces.

SportsArsene Wenger’s Failed Transfer Targets List by Petmax(op): 3:49pm On Aug 17, 2016
If there is one constant theme running through the second half of Arsene Wenger's 20-year reign at Arsenal, it's been the difficulty in signing top talent to replace to talents when they leave Arsenal, in the case of Robin Van Persie and Cesc Fabregas.

This season (2016/17), Arsenal are faced with the dilemma of improving their squad which placed second last season (2015/16). They've had bids rebuffed by Leicester, Lyon and Valencia for Riyad Mahrez, Alexandre Lacazette and Skhodran Mustafi respectively.

It may feel like history repeating itself with Wenger having a long list of previous transfer targets who haven't ended up at the Emirates. Take a look at some of Arsene Wenger's transfer targets who they failed to sign in the last three years:

GONZALO HIGUAIN (2016)
Wenger identified Napoli's Argentine striker as potentially the final piece in Arsenal's jigsaw this season. But whereas Arsenal valued Higuain around the £50m mark – which would have been a club record – Juventus moved in with an astonishing £76m bid to get their man. This move failed because of Arsenal's inability to pay such an high amount to get their man.

JAMIE VARDY (2016)
Wenger triggered Vardy's £22m release clause at Leicester City only for the England striker to use the interest to negotiate a new deal to stay at the King Power Stadium rather than join Arsenal. This deal may have have failed because Arsenal refused to offer him higher wages.

SportsFernando Torres Blasts Liverpool, Reveal Reasons For His Exit by Petmax(op): 12:36pm On Aug 17, 2016
Athletico Madrid Striker Fernando Torres has opened up on his frustration at Anfield before switching to Stamford Bridge in 2011.

For the first time, Fernando Torres has revealed actions that led to him been sold to Chelsea in for a 50 million British record fee in 2011. The Spaniard blasted Liverpool for labelling him a traitor which was not the truth behind the sale.

Torres revealed in Simon Hughes’ new book titled “Ring fire”, he said: “Comolli told me that the new owners (FSG), they had an idea of how to spend their investment. They wanted to bring in young players, to build something new. I was thinking to myself, this takes time to work. It takes two, three, four, maybe even 10 years.”

“I didn’t have that at the time. I was 27-years-old. I did not have time to wait. I wanted to win.

“Here we are five years later and they are still trying to build – around the same position in the league as when I left. “It was presented as if I was a traitor. It was not like this in the discussions. Liverpool could not admit they were doing something wrong with the whole team. They had to find a guilty one.”

Although, Torres admitted to have spoken with Kenny Dalgish but not after discussions had already begun between Liverpool and Chelsea.

CrimeFG Sacks 23 Prison Officers Over Jailbreaks by Petmax(op): 3:35pm On Aug 16, 2016
Twenty-three officers of the Nigeria Prisons Service have been relieved of their jobs for their alleged role in the jailbreaks that occurred recently at Kuje Medium Security Prison in the Federal Capital Territory and Koton-Karfe Prison in Kogi State.

This decision was approved at an emergency meeting of the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board in Abuja on August 11.

A statement from the Nigeria Prisons Service indicates that 17 junior staff of the Kuje and Konton-Karfe prisons have also been sacked in connection with the jailbreaks.

In addition, the officer in charge of the Nsukka Prison in Enugu State, Mr Lawrence Okonkwo and 10 other staff of the facility have been suspended, to allow for an investigation of the escape of 15 inmates from the prison last week, though six of them were said to have been re-arrested.

The sack comes on the heels of the three jailbreaks that occurred between June and August in Kuje, Koton-Karfe and Nsukka prison facilities, all in Nigeria.

Two inmates escaped from the Kuje prison while 13 others fled the Koton-Karfe prison.

The Nsukka jailbreak was the recent where 15 prisoners escaped, just as six escapees were rearrested.

Christianity EtcNorthern Christians Break Away From CAN by Petmax(op): 4:15pm On Aug 15, 2016
Northern Christians said they have broken away form the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The Christians under the groups identified as Concerned Christians of Nigeria and Northern Nigerian Christians said recent political happenings and ‘corruption’ in the apex Christian body, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), forced them to revert to the pre-independence Northern Nigerian Christian Association (NNCA).

In a joint press conference in Jos On Sunday, Rev. Luka Shehu of Concerned Christians of Nigeria and Peter Luka of Northern Nigerian Christians, said the decision to revert to the Northern Nigerian Christians Association became necessary following what they described as the ‘travesty of justice, lies and manipulation’ that led to the emergence of Rev. Supo Ayokunle as CAN President.

They accused the past CAN President, Ayo Oritsejafor, of deliberately frustrating the candidature of Rev. Jeremiah Gado of the TEKAN/ECWA bloc to prevent the emergence of a northerner.

Rev. Shehu and Hon. Luka said billions of naira had been donated to CAN nationally and internationally to support Christians suffering from the activities of Boko Haram in the North-East but said, “Not a single kobo has been given.”

The groups said it will on Monday begin registration of the northern Christian body and will situate its headquarters in Abuja.

SportsUsain Bolt Wins, Sets Another Record by Petmax(op): 4:50am On Aug 15, 2016
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt had a slow start but a marvelous finish to create a record nobody is sure would be surpassed or even matched any time in this generation and some say in this life time.

With 9.81 seconds he won the 100m gold medal at the Rio Olympics. It was his third consecutive 100m gold, having won in Beijing in 2008 , London in 2012 and now in Rio 2016. Nobody in history has ever done so.

The big man of track and field did in Rio what will be talked about for ages. He thrilled the crowd with his strides and their ovation was tremendous. Justin Gatlin of USA won the silver with 9.89 seconds. He was also in line for history if he won.

Nobody had performed that feat 12 years apart. He won the gold in Athens Games in 2004 and at 34 he was the oldest man on the block for the final.

He had a blistering start and led the pack up even beyond the 50m mark before Bolt overtook him and finished in style.

Canada’s Andre De Grasse won the bronze with 9.91 seconds.

SportsRio Olympics: Nigeria's U-23 Beats Denmark, Cruises Into Semi-final by Petmax(op): 2:14pm On Aug 14, 2016
Team Nigeria Captain, John Obi Mikel, scored a goal and also provided an assist on Saturday as the Dream Team VI cruised into the semi-finals of the men's football event of the Rio Olympics with a 2-0 win over Denmark.

The Dream Team, who had before now been enmeshed in wrangling over unpaid allowances, came out smoking against the Danes.

Chelsea star, Obi Mikel, put Nigeria in front in the 15th minute after he connected to a cutback pass by Imoh Ezekiel.

Ezekiel, who provided the first goal, had the chance of his own moments after but the hardworking forward failed to bury the ball in the net as his effort went over the bar.

The Danes did give a brave fight but goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel was up to the task, posting some impressive saves.

The Nigeria U-23 team continued from where they stopped at the restart of the second half as they continued to push for another goal.

Their efforts finally paid off just before the hour mark when Mikel, with a well-delivered cross, found Aminu Usman who connected with a header which put Nigeria 2-0 up.
