Nigerian Women Lead the World in Skin Bleaching – World Health Organization grin

http://africansuntimes.com/2013/06/nigerian-women-lead-the-world-in-skin-bleaching-world-health-organization/

Ugly face of skin bleaching

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin-lightening products, the world’s highest percentage. That compares with 59 percent in Togo, and 27 percent in Senegal. The reasons for this are varied but most people say they use skin-lighteners because they want “white skin”.

In many parts of Africa, lighter-skinned women are considered more beautiful and are believed to be more successful and likely to find marriage.

It’s not only women though who are obsessed with bleaching their skins. Some men too are involved in the practice.

Conceptions of beauty

Lightening creams are not effectively regulated in Nigeria where even roadside vendors sell tubes and plastic bags of powders and ointments from cardboard boxes stacked along sidewalks in market districts. Many of the tubes are unlabelled as to their actual ingredients. In a market in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, business is booming for shops selling skin-lightening products. Both local and imported products line the shelves of Rashida Lawal’s cosmetics shop.

“About 90 percent of my clients come asking for skin whitening products,” she told Al Jazeera. “I sell it to them and give advice on what product is best for them and how to use them.”

She says most of her customers are in a great haste to lighten their skin.

“Taking the color of your skin to different colour has to be gradual. It’s not something you decide one day that ‘I want to be fair, I want to be like Michael Jackson and you become Michael Jackson all of a sudden’. That is why we have to advise them first before selling it to them” said Lawal.

Rashida and her staff also mix different ointments and creams for customers “depending on the desired level of lightness”.

Famous Nigerian Musician Femi Kuti says the use skin-lightening products have given rise to their own terminology.

“When the bleaching propaganda got so negative, they had to come up with toning. Bleaching sounds too hard, now it’s toning. I don’t bleach, they say, I tone!”

“They think bleaching is gege,” he told Al Jazeera, using a Nigerian term for cool.

Femi attributes skin bleaching to a feeling that foreign products and images must, by definition, be good.

“An African will prefer to be called John-Philip. If you said your name was Chukwu Emeka Afongkudong they will say you are from the village. You are backward. How can you have such a name? We really look down on our culture and heritage instead of being proud of it,” he laments.

suffering- and-no-more-smiling country. no wonder they are desperate for Ghanaian citizenship grin

More Nigerians are claiming citizenship of other W/African countries grin

by Rachel Ogbu
http://www.ynaija.com/visa-application-more-nigerians-are-claiming-citizenship-of-other-wafrican-countries/

More Nigerians would rather be from Ghana, Senegal or Guinea when travelling around the world grin, new reports say.

THISDAY investigated these claims and discovered that it is mainly Nigerians who travel to China that take the passports of other countries in the region and the reason is because China gives about four weeks visa to Nigerians and do not extend it when it expires, but the country gives up to six months visa to Ghanaians, Senegalese, Guineans and others in the region.

According to reports, due to this discrimination, many Nigerian travellers are forced to disguise as citizens of other countries in West Africa, especially Ghana, to obtain visas for business or holiday.

A source at the Nigeria Immigration Service told THISDAY that Nigeria visa offices are now reciprocating the Chinese gesture because visa policy is usually based on reciprocity.

“We give them 14 days visa but we don’t have the enabling machinery to flush them out whenever their visa expires so many Chinese overstay their visa in Nigeria. Some of them even take transit visa and disappear as soon as they arrive in Nigeria.”

“Government officials do not want the law to operate so they intervene in the job of Immigration officials, but the Nigeria Immigration Service used to have investigation and inspection department whose duty is to check those who have over stayed their visa and also patrol the boundaries to stop illegal immigration into the country. But when these Chinese overstay and you want to do your job, these government officials will intervene and may even sack you.”

ThisDay Live reports:

When Nigerian businessmen go to China to buy, manufacture or process goods, four weeks are not always enough and if they leave the country at the expiration of their visa and instruct their agents to arrange and ship their consignments, they usually short-change them and as their goods purchased by the Nigerian is arriving the country, their dubious partners in China would export the same goods to the country and sell it at cheaper price, thus damaging the market for the Nigerian importer.

So for the Nigerians to stay till they are able to get their goods, they need visa that allows them longer time, hence they go for Ghanaian and other countries’ visas.

The Immigration official said the body needs logistics to be able to effectively carry out its responsibility, including patrol vehicles at the borders, communication equipment and others.
“In the 1980s Nigeria Immigration Service was patrolling the nation’s borders and preventing people of other countries from gaining entry. Today, the Boko Haram menace would have been checked if Immigration is adequately equipped. Now, these Chinese are having easy run in Nigeria because government is protecting them and those menial jobs that should be done by Nigerians are being taken over by the Chinese who are now flooding into the country.”

Nigerian High Commissioner: The Ghanaian is too civilised to be involved in terrorism grin
http://edition.myjoyonline.com/pages/news/201309/113715.php

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ademola Oluseyi Onafookan says he does not foresee the emergence of militant groups such as Nigeria's Boko Haram or Somalia's al-Shabab in Ghana.

According to Ambassador Onafookan, Ghanaians are generally calm, civilised grin, and law abiding and therefore not predisposed to violence.

Speaking Tuesday on "Inside Afrika" – a Pan-African Development programme on Radio Universe, the Nigerian High Commissioner was of the view that the level of maturity displayed by Ghanaians before, during and after the Election petition hearing, is enough indication that Ghanaians would not involve themselves in violence and terrorist attacks.

At least 62 people were killed at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, when suspected terrorists seized the place last Saturday. The dead included Ghana's intellectual and former Chairman of the Council of State, Prof. Kofi Awoonor. His son Afesti however, survived gunshot wounds.

“It takes a mad group of people to come out of nowhere and create problems for everybody,” Ambassador Onafookan told Yaw Acheampong, host of the programme.

The Nigerian High Commissioner however noted that no country could be completely immuned from terrorists’ attacks because, even in the case of Boko Haram in Nigeria and Al Shabab in Kenya, some of the perpetrators were foreigners.

He also expressed his condolences to all the affected families and paid tribute to the late Professor Awoonor.

Hoodlums may take over Nigeria – Afenifere

BY DAYO JOHNSON

AKURE—AFENIFERE, a pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Wednesday, challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to rise and act fast to stem the spate of insecurity and the wanton destruction of lives and property or face the possibility of hoodlums completely taking over the country.

Secretary-General of the group, Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa, said the rate at which kidnappers abduct prominent Nigerians and the Boko Haram menace had not only put the lives of people at risk, but also scared away prospective investors.

Arogbofa listed the recent abduction of the mother of Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the wife of former Governor of Western Region, Gen. Oluwole Rotimi (rtd), as examples, which had brought bad publicity to the country.

According to him, “nobody is any longer safe in the country. Just a few days ago, it was the elderly Prof (Mrs) Okonjo that was kidnapped; only yesterday it was the wife of Gen. Oluwole Rotimi, former governor of Western Region.

“In the Northern part of the country, the Boko Haram is in charge and kills with reckless abandon.”

Beware Of "Pillows Sellers In Lagos Traffic" by PayWell: 5:27pm On Dec 11

I just bought two pillows from an aboki, got home, took off the nice plastic wrappings and then PERCEIVED a nasty smell, not what i expected of a new product.

Became curious, took a razor blade and cut it open.

What i saw was undecipherable, pieces of very old and dirty foam.

Ouch!!! The Stench. I guess the very old and dirty foam was taken from the dustbin.

I am dump-folded. I have just been swindled of my hard earned cash and what about the health hazard posed by such a product.

LAGOS BUYERS BEWARE!!!

The Toilet Named Nigeria grin grin grin grin grin grin
http://washafrica./2011/07/12/the-toilet-named-nigeria/

In his latest column, government critic and Professor of Creative Writing at Trinity College (USA) Okey Ndibe, voices his disgust at the practice of open defecation in his homeland Nigeria.

If you want to gauge how badly Nigerians have been animalized, then pay attention to how, and where, many of them defecate. Just recently, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that 33 million Nigerians have no access to decent toilets grin. As a consequence, said the report, these citizens of Africa’s most populous nation answer the call of nature in the open. grin grin grin grin

Is it really only 33 million Nigerians? One is afraid that here’s one occasion when statisticians have pegged the figure too low. Nigeria – as I wrote three years ago – may be described as one vast toilet. Anybody who has traveled from Lagos to Onitsha by road knows that there isn’t one single rest area with toilet facilities along the route. At stops in Ore or Benin City, pressed passengers must hurry off into the brushes, gingerly skating around others’ feces, in order to relieve themselves.

In Ndibe’s eyes the “habit of doing in public what ought to be done in private” points to a deep cultural crisis. grin grin grin

Long habituated to inhuman conditions, many Nigerians have ceased noticing those peeing or defecating in the open. Or, when we notice, too many of us have lost our sense of outrage at the oddity. Public acts of pissing and defecation have become – more or less – normal, part and parcel of our social experience and landscape.

The associated health risks of Nigeria’s insanitary conditions have made Ndibe feel uneasy about shaking hands. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

For me, it’s often a dilemma. I know how scandalous it would be to refuse to offer one’s hand. Yet, I can’t help wondering where the hands I shake have been, and whether they’ve been washed. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Ndibe retells an revealing anecdote about local government staff who staunchly opposed a plan to build staff toilets. They told the local government administrator to “just give them a share of the public funds – and to leave it up to them to decide on toilet matters”.

it is worse

NIGERIAN NO LONGER MUMUDON, BUT EVILDOM grin
http://chatafrik.com/articles/nigerian-affairs/nigeria-is-not-mumudom-but-evildom

This essay is in response to Okey Ndibe’s essay calling Nigerians mumu and calling the country Mumudom. Mumu implies that one is a fool that others take advantage of. Nigerians are not fools, Mumu and no one is taking advantage of them. Nigerians choose to do the wrong things rather than the right things. The right name for Nigeria is Evildom! grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Nigeria Is Not Mumudom But Evildom

Ozodi Osuji

Last night, at around 2AM, actually, I read an article by Okey Ndibe in which he characterized Nigerians as Mumu and called their country a kingdom of mumus hence mumudom grin. I laughed until I feared waking those sleeping in my house and restrained myself.

Mr. Ndibe’s argument is that Nigerians are party to the abuse of their leaders. He carefully described how ordinary Nigerians allow their leaders to turn the country into a kleptocracy, a place where the leaders are elected to steal from the people. His point is that if the people had stood up and opposed their thievish leaders that Nigeria would not be the empire of thieves it is today.

Apparently, Nigerians are afraid of harm and death and when they try to oppose the criminal gang ruling them some of them disappear and fear of experiencing similar fate disposes the many to keep quiet as the bandits at Abuja rob the country down.

Mr. Ndibe supposes that given Nigerians ready acquiescence to being robbed that the criminal roadshow would go on until there is no longer something to rob. He feels that until oil wells dry up and there is no money to pay military goon squads to subdue the people that the highway robbers at Abuja would keep doing their thing. In other words, Nigerians would not be freed from their gangster rulers until the gangsters no longer have money to pay goons squads to corral the people and keep them in line.

An empty treasury is the only hope for ridding Nigeria of her criminal leaders! Left to their own devices Nigerians cannot have an honest government.

What an indictment of his fellow countrymen, I thought.

Ndibe’s essay made sense to me. Thus, all day today I thought about it. The more I think about it the more I realized that he is mistaken. Thus, this evening I decided to correct his mistake hence this essay.

The term mumu implies a simpleton who is easily taken advantage of by others; a person so trusting that unscrupulous persons hoodwink him. Is this what Nigerians are?

Could anyone ever call Nigerians fools? I do not think so. All Nigerians have PhDs in how to steal; they are all ingenious in figuring out ways to swindle other persons. grin grin grin Take a look at their 419 scams relieving Westerners millions of dollars yearly; their Social Security number scams (they use your social security number to obtain credit cards and use the money to live well and in the meantime have spoiled your credit); their bank scams (they borrow money from banks and vamoose with it).
