deluxecad:
What are people advocating here? Wearing an explosive belt and walking into an in-session FEC meeting and blowing yourself up? Hurling explosives at our damned rulers and stuff? That'd be terrorist, crude and untaught. There must be a language we should've known that they understand well, we'll employ it. When Obasanjo sold our two refineries to himself and his cohorts, raised the VAT to 10% and hiked the gas price, what brought about the revocations? Comprehensive strikes! Workers' salaries can only be raised in Nigeria only when they down tools, doctors and lecturers can only have their hospitals and laboratories equipped when they strike. What other thing works for our sick rulers?
That what i am saying and not all these peaceful protest, lets walk to all the airports and seaports to completely block any activity going on there and see if they will not do things right. Let the Nigerian labor Congress go on a comprehensive strike and see if they will not sit tight or will they use the military to force us back to work.

Literature › Nwaubani Wins Commonwealth Writers' Prize by Pharoh(op): 7:51pm On Mar 11, 2010
NEXT's Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani has won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book in the Africa Region.

The debut novelist won for her novel, ‘I Do Not Come To You By Chance'. The win was announced by the Commonwealth Foundation in South Africa earlier today. South African writer Marie Heese was also declared the Africa Regional winner in the Best Book category.

Nwaubani's winning book, ‘I Do Not Come To You By Chance' tells the story of a young man drawn into the clandestine world of Nigerian advance fee fraud, better known as ‘419'.

The author will now vie with winners in the other Commonwealth regions for the overall prize, to be announced in New Delhi, India, on April 12.

SOME applicants seeking employment into the National Examinations Council have insisted that they were duped by the organisation of about N29m.

Saturday Punch had reported in its March 6, 2010 edition that over 50,000 job seekers had alleged that they were duped by NECO.

The N29m quoted by the applicants, some of whom besieged Punch office in Minna to lodge their complaints, was the amount paid by the 57, 193 candidates that were not shortlisted for the employment aptitude test into NECO.

This amount was part of the over N41m expected as proceeds to NECO from the sale of scratch cards at N500 per candidate to all the 83,990 candidates that applied for jobs in the council. This was a condition the applicants had to meet to log on to NECO’s website to check whether they were shortlisted for the test.

Investigations by our correspondent had earlier revealed that 83, 990 unemployed graduates applied for employment, out of which 57,193 were not registered for the aptitude test slated for this week. Only 26, 797 were registered for the examination.

But following the Saturday Punch story, the management of the organisation put up advertisements in some newspapers to defend its decision.

One of the applicants, Mr. Dotun Philip, who came with a copy of the earlier advertisement on staff vacancies published in some newspapers on September 16, 2009, said on Monday, “The normal practice when such vacancies are published is for the condition for recruitment to be well spelt out.

“If the organisation had stated all these conditions when the job vacancies were published, I believe the 57, 193 candidates that were not shortlisted would have read the condition and would not have bothered to apply in the first instance, talk less of paying N500 each to NECO to know whether they were shortlisted or not.

“In my own case, I graduated over five years ago with a very good result. If that condition had been put when the vacancies were published, I would not have applied; and I believe the same thing goes with some of the applicants.”

Another candidate, Mr. Aliyu Muhamed, also faulted NECO’s defence.

According to him, “If the organisation is sincere as it claims that the money collected was to offset the cost of advertisements, are they trying to say that over N42m collected was invested in the two or three papers used for the advert?

He added, “I am surprised why it is now NECO is discovering that distance is a barrier in asking us to buy scratch cards for N500 to check whether we are short listed for interview or not.

“Why didn’t they ask us to register for employment online before asking us to submit 10 copies of applications to letters from our referees and applications at their zonal offices and other offices? Most of us travelled long distances to bring our applications to their offices.”

NECO’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Aliyu, told our correspondent that on Monday the body never set out to dupe the applicants.

According to him, “Organisations atimes, in handling recruitment, try to balance federal character, national planning and so on. Candidates have no right to determine what the condition for employment should be.

“The right is that of the organisation and you keep eliminating till you get the best hands.”

He insisted that the applicants were not ripped off, adding that most of them had already been working before applying for jobs in NECO.

Politics › At Last: Yar'adua's Mother, Hajia Dada, Sets Eyes On Her Terminally Sick Son by Pharoh(op): 8:38pm On Mar 08, 2010
At last: Yar'Adua's mother, Hajia Dada, sets eyes on her terminally sick son, weeps like a baby

After months of hide and seek, sick President Umaru Yar’Adua’s mother, Hajia Dada Yar’Adua was allowed access to him on Friday by the restrictive cabal led by Her daughter-in-law, Turai and Chief Security Officer (CSO), Yusuf Tilde.

Pointblanknews.com source in Abuja revealed that few minutes after setting eyes on her son, shocked Hajia Dada broke down and wept like a baby, repeatedly calling him “Babangida, Babangida” her choice name for President Yar’Adua.

The President never responded to his mother as he sat and looked at her in a manner that suggested he may have lost memories of her, according to a source.

“Hajia was so shocked at his state of his health and the most painful was that even while she called him Babangida, the name she gave him from birth by which family members know Mr. President, he did not respond, he was just there looking at her like he doesn’t know who she is,” a source told Pointblanknews.com

For months Turai and her co-travelers restricted access to the sick President. They did not even allow his immediate family including his mother to see how he is doing. It was against this background that Hajia Dada called on the PDP, General Ibrahim Babangida, and Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo to prevail on Turai to allow her access.

According to our source, on setting her eyes on her son, she repeatedly called out her favorite name she calls him. She named him Babangida after his paternal grand father. Our source said she kept calling “ Babangida, Babangida” , but her son just starred at her and could not utter a word.

Pointblanknews.com source said after several minutes of trying to establish communication with her gravely ill son, with stone-faced Turai watching, Hajia Dada was taken away by security operatives.

It was leant that the President’s mother returned to Katsina later Friday night, with the possibility of not seeing her son again, at the back of her mind.

Our source also hinted that several times Hajia Dada had asked that her son be brought back to Katsina, where is expects marabouts to perform a miracle.

Sources say shortly before Yar’Adua was evacuated to Saudi Arabia, the sick President had requested audience with his mother at the Presidential Villa. But Hajia Dada spent two days with the President and did not know why other brothers and sisters of President Yar’Adua never came around to see her.

According to sources, Turai, wife of the President had instructed security operatives in the villa not to allow any of the President’s siblings around. An operative who is said to be very close to the Yar’adua’s had hinted the President’s mother.

The President’s mother, it was gathered had told the president and for the first time, President Yar’Adua, according to a source “tongue lashed his wife and immediately ordered than his family members be granted unrestricted access anytime they want to see him.”

Where hav al d past protests and fights achieved for us and wat wil this protest achieve
Thank you my brother because as for me anything short of a prelude leading to a revolution or a total change to the status-quo does not interest me. So we should just protest for goodluck to be president and that's all. When are we going to protest about the other problems facing us a nation?

This article shows how brave Nigerians used to be in the past.Like Eyodad said we need to mobilize and fight again but this time our enemies are the political parties and politicians. We do not need to fight a full scale war ,we just need to fight a covert war like the Mossad of Isreal.

Assasinations is the ANSWER.
You have just hit the nail on the head, careful and secret elimination of these elites is the way to go now. From the local government chairman, to the governors and ministers they should just be simply eliminated in the mossad way.

@Eziachi It is really good to hear from a participant like you and i really salute you.

I honestly think he should run and run vigorously

If he fails so be it.

The man was up for it in 2007, Nigerians simply refused to hope.
Maybe we may hope better this time, he should throw himself in the ring for one last time and give it a full go. Regardless of what PDP thinks.

All he needs is a Nupe or Tiv Muslim VP.

I personally believe that a Presidential candidate can win elections in Nigeria by being strong in the South and winning the rest of Taraba, Adamawa, Benue, Plateau, Niger and Abuja.

You must not win in Kano and Sokoto or Katsina to win elections.
Only if the south and middlebelt can come together to form a united front which i think is not even possible.
Politics › Re: Declare State Of Emergency In Plateau Now by Pharoh: 10:31pm On Mar 07, 2010
I think the federal government should carry out a vote in form of a referendum in all states of the federation and let the indigenes decide which settlers they don't want in their state. So those settlers could simply just move back to their state.
