If you've decided to switch your smartphone from one running Android to an iPhone, you're making a great choice. But if you've been using Android long enough to accumulate a decent number of apps and a good-sized music library, to say nothing of videos, contacts, and calendars, you may have questions about what you can bring to your new phone. Luckily, the answer is that you can bring most of your content and data, with a few notable exceptions.

Software: iTunes

One of the most important things you'll need on your computer for using your iPhone is iTunes.

It's possible that you've been using iTunes to manage your music, podcasts, and movies, but many Android users use other software. When you switch to iPhone, iTunes isn't optional: iTunes is how you control what content—including contacts, calendars, and apps—gets synced to your phone. ITunes is free from Apple, so you'll just need to download and install it:

Depending on how you've used your Android phone, you may have downloaded a lot of content, especially music, directly to it.

It's crucial that, before you switch to iPhone, you sync all of that music to your computer. If the music is on your computer as well as your phone, the likelihood that you can move it to your new iPhone is much higher (more on that in a minute). But if your music only lives on your Android phone, there's a good chance you'll lose all those downloads when you switch.

If you get your music through a streaming service like Spotify, Rdio, or MOG, you won't have to worry about losing music (though any songs you saved for offline listening will have to be re-downloaded on your iPhone). Just download the iPhone apps for those services and sign into your account.

In fact, you want to make sure that everything on your Android phone is synced to your computer before you switch to iPhone—not just your music, but also calendars, address books, videos, etc. If you use a web-based calendar or address book, this probably isn't necessary, but better safe than sorry. Sync as much data to your computer as you can before starting your switch.

What Content Can You Transfer?

Probably the most important part of moving from one smartphone platform to the other is to make sure that all of your data comes with you when you change.

Music

One of the things that most people care most about when switching is that their music comes with them. The good news is that, in many cases, you should be able to transfer your music. If the music on your phone (and now on your computer, because you synced it, right?) is DRM-free, just add the music to iTunes and you'll be able to sync it to your iPhone. If the music has DRM, you may need to install an app to authorize it. Some DRM isn't supported on the iPhone at all, so if you've got a lot of DRMed music, you may want to check before you switch.

Windows Media files can't be played on the iPhone, so it's best to add them to iTunes, convert them to MP3 or AAC, and then sync them. Windows Media files with DRM may not be usable in iTunes at all, so you may not be able to convert them.

Photos

The other thing that's most important to many people is their photos. You definitely don't want to lose hundreds or thousands of priceless memories just because you changed phones. This, again, is where syncing the content of your phone to your computer is key. If you sync the photos from your Android phone to a photo management program on your computer, you should be able to move it to your new iPhone. If you've got a Mac, just sync the photos to iPhoto (or copy them to your computer and then import them to iPhoto) and you'll be fine. On Windows, there are a number of photo-management programs available. It's best to look for one that advertises itself as being able to sync with the iPhone or iTunes.

If you use an online photo storage and sharing site like Flickr or Instagram, your photos will still be in your account there. Whether you can sync photos from your online account to your phone depends on the features of the online service.

Apps

Here's a big difference between the two types on phones: Android apps do not work on the iPhone (and vice versa). So, any apps you've got on Android can't come with you when you move to iPhone. Luckily, many Android apps have iPhone versions or replacements that do basically the same thing (though if you have paid apps, you'll have to buy them again for the iPhone). Search the App Store in iTunes for your favorite apps.

Even if there are iPhone versions of the apps you need, your app data may not come with them. If the app requires that you create an account or otherwise stores your data in the cloud, you should be able to download the data to your iPhone, but some apps store your data on your phone. You may lose that data, so check with the developer of the app.

Contacts

Wouldn't it be a pain if you had to re-type all the names, phone numbers, and other contact information in your address book when you switch? Luckily, you won't have to do that. There are two ways you can make sure that the contents of your address book transfer to your iPhone. First, sync your Android phone to your computer and make sure that your contacts are completely synced to Windows Address Book or Outlook Express (there are many other address book programs, but those are the ones iTunes can sync with).

The other option is to store your address book in a cloud-based tool like Yahoo Address Book or Google Contacts. If you already use one of these services, or decide to one to transfer your contacts, make sure all of your address book content is synced to them,

Calendar

Transferring all of your important events, meetings, birthdays, and other calendar entries is reasonably similar to the process you used for your contacts. If you're using an online calendar through Google or Yahoo, or a desktop program like Outlook, just make sure that your data is up to date. Then, when you set up your new iPhone, you'll have the chance to connect those accounts and sync that data.

If you're using a third-party calendar app, things may be different. Check the App Store to see if there's an iPhone version. If there is, you may be able to download and sign into that app to get data from your account. If there isn't an iPhone version, you probably want to export your data from the app you use now and import it into something like a Google or Yahoo calendar.

Videos, Movies, and TV Shows

The issues around transferring videos is very similar to transferring music. If your videos have DRM on them, it's likely that they won't play on the iPhone. They won't play if they're in Windows Media format, either. If you bought the movies through an app, check the App Store to see if there's an iPhone version. If there is, you should be able to play it on your iPhone.

Texts

Text messages stored on your Android phone probably won't transfer to your iPhone unless they're in a third-party app that stores them in the cloud and has an iPhone version. In that case, when you sign into the app on your iPhone, your texting history may appear (but it might not; it depends on how the app works).

Saved Voicemails

Voicemails that you've got saved should be accessible on your iPhone. Generally speaking, voicemails are saved in your account with your phone company, not on your smartphone (though they're available there, too), so as long as you have the same phone company account, they should be accessible. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

While one could spend significant time merely searching the open seas for frigates to overtake or islands to explore treasure chests, the story of “Black Flag” is just as engaging, and more so than any previous “AC” game. Kenway is a charismatic lead, as he rises high enough in the ranks of the pirate world that he begins to run missions with Blackbeard himself. What’s so remarkable about “Black Flag” is the way the open-world exploration beautifully intertwines with the overall narrative. Traveling from port to port, taking down enemy ships and forts with a stunningly-designed ship combat system that’s easy to learn and hard to master, killing your enemies from the shadows, and upgrading your character and ship along the way – it becomes difficult to separate the “side missions” from the major ones. A lot of open-world games are so in name only. You can’t really do much outside of the core narrative. Everything here weaves together into one, remarkable experience. M

Telling you what I think of a “Call of Duty” is like telling you what I think of McDonald’s. You already have an opinion about the Big Mac. Having said that, I have to form an opinion on this specific installment and it feels like a nice transitional title, one that successfully takes the franchise to the PS4 but doesn’t do much beyond that. One could call it treading water but it also certainly doesn’t drown. It’s a familiar, enjoyable, addictive experience that can bridge the system for millions of gamers. Mission accomplished.


Child of Light

“Child of Light” is the first PS4 game to blend it all—gorgeous, unique graphics with some of the most addictive RPG gameplay of the last several years. It is a deceptively simple game that gets more challenging and customizable as your party grows and your skill sets increase. It is the rare RPG that doesn’t feel cluttered or repetitive and yet still offers waves of second-by-second decisions that need to be made and even a bit of grinding and side missions for those looking for RPG staples. It is 25% of the cost of most PS4 games, runs for hours (and that’s without much exploration and zipping through the dialogue scenes quickly), and is so satisfying that I was actually sad when it was over. I didn’t want to leave this world.

I must say that “Second Son” looks absolutely amazing. Sucker Punch has fully embraced the potential of the PS4. Want some stats? When Delsin turns into smoke and dashes forward, he breaks apart into 11,000 individual particles before reforming. Actor Troy Baker’s face was captured to 22,321 separate vertices for in-game animations. Each raindrop is considered a separate particle to be rendered by the graphics engine and there are 30,000 of them. Every horizon, every neon sign, every NPC—“Infamous: Second Son” is the best-looking PS4 game yet.


The Last of Us Remastered

If you’re on the backlash bandwagon and are one of those people who don’t get the hype, the PS4 version won’t persuade you. It is, at its core, the same story. And if the saga of survivors Joel and Ellie didn’t interest you in 2013, it won’t in 2014. But, to be honest, you and I don’t see the purpose of video games the same way anyway. For me, “TLOU” hits every box on the checklist of what we want from games. It is perfect escapism, creating some of the most intense action scenes in the history of the form. It is also something deeper thematically, a game that allows us to relate to characters and consider how we would act in the same situation. And, finally, it is an incredible visual accomplishment, creating a world that feels fully realized and lived-in.


MLB 14 The Show

The PS4 version of “MLB 14 The Show” is the best sports game ever made. Yeah, I said it. I’m on that journalistic limb, living the hyperbole, embracing the melodramatic exclamation. It’s the BEST.


Rayman Legends

The levels have attained a 3D quality with the PS4 graphics engine, approaching Hollywood cartoon-caliber animation. My 4-year-old son loves to watch me play “Rayman Legends” like it’s another Saturday morning offering and the visual polish on the PS4 version makes the graphical presentation even more impressive. This is a GORGEOUS game, one that all platformer developers should play. You know those issues that hamper your enjoyment of other platformers due to weak visuals? Bad camera angles that force you to fall; lack of depth that makes jumping impossible; inconsistent combat because of 2D scrolling weaknesses? None of that is here. None. There are a few levels that feel kind of perfunctory, I’ll admit that fact, but 80-90% of “Rayman Legends” simply works.



Rogue Legacy

Get ready to die. Get ready to die again and again and again. Reportedly inspired by brutal games like “Dark Souls,” the brilliant and addictive “Rogue Legacy,” now available on the PSN after a fantastic 2013 run on home computer systems, forces you to die. Sure, death is a common building block of all video games from Mario to Nathan Drake, but rarely has it been so cleverly ingrained into the arc and focus of a game that never falls below ridiculously entertaining. I died a lot while playing “Rogue Legacy” over the last few days. And I loved every minute of it.


Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Given my obligation to play all of the major and many of the minor games for the PS3 and PS4, I understandably don’t have much time to revisit even my favorite titles. Being able to play through even the best games of the year for a second time is a luxury my schedule does not allow. And yet I will play through “Tomb Raider” again (I’m almost halfway there already) on the PS4. Although this amazing game feels so different on the PS4 that it hardly qualifies as a replay.


Watch Dogs

“Watch Dogs” is an imperfect game that you simply must play. It is an ambitious, epic crime saga a la “Grand Theft Auto” but with a modern, tech bent for gamers who know what the NSA does and believe in Edward Snowden. It is ultra-violent, ridiculous, and over-the-top in ways that can both thrill and frustrate in the exact same moment. Brilliantly redesigning Chicago in much the same way that Christopher Nolan did in “The Dark Knight”—one block will be meticulously accurate to the real city and the next totally reorganized/fictional—it features the most fascinating and well-constructed environment yet created for the PS4. You NEED to see this game. However, seeing it and even enjoying its addictive, deep variety of gameplay can’t fix the storytelling problems or the sense that this is a title that’s more cluttered than refined. According to Ubisoft, the game is already a massive hit, selling more copies in its first day than any title in the company’s history (and, so you know, they make the “Assassin’s Creed” and “Far Cry” games so it’s quite a feat). So simply to be a part of the gaming world, you need to know what "Watch Dogs" is all about.

I have fixed the keyboard of my laptop about 3 times this year. Yeah, your guess is right, I'm a game freak. Well gaming is one sure way to relax the mind - keeping it far from the worries of life. So far so good I am going to give you a list of what games I consider to be the best games for 2015 so far. Of course you can add yours in the comments. So let's explore them.

1. Batman: Arkham Knight
The most cinematic game of the year to date came in the form of the fourth installment in the unexpectedly great “Arkham” series. Clearly inspired by Christopher Nolan and Alan Moore’s takes on The Dark Knight, “Arkham” was arguably the darkest video game featuring Batman to date. It’s also, in many ways, the most thematically dense. This is Batman at his most haunted, captured perfectly by an imaginary Joker (voiced perfectly by Mark Hamill) who taunts and teases him at every turn. Strong voice work (although some questionable dialogue at times) elevates a game that really feels like it belongs in the conversation of the great Summer movies of 2015. Heck, it’s better than half of them.

2. Bloodborne
I know a lot of people who are still avoiding “Bloodborne” because of the stories about its undeniably high degree of difficulty. Perhaps you’ve played “Dark Souls” and cried at the gamer torture held within. Perhaps you fear the gamer PTSD that comes when one commits to a game that exists primarily to tear down your defenses and kill you over and over and over again. Whatever your hesitation about this amazing game, leave it at the door. Yes, you will die. A LOT. But “Bloodborne” is a masterpiece because it completely reconfigures the way you approach a game. Death isn’t a speed bump, it is a learning experience. Yes, you will scream in frustration, but the satisfaction gained by actually conquering what first seems impossible in this game is the kind of gaming adrenalin we simply don’t see that often any more. It’s an actual accomplishment.


3. Game of Thrones
HBO’s hit drama may have been a bit down this year but the Telltale Games episodic adventure based on both it and the George R. R. Martin books feels downright revolutionary at times. I’ve praised Telltale here before and you really NEED to play “The Walking Dead” if you want to understand where games are going in the next ten years, but “Game of Thrones” is that rare experience that gets more complex and rewarding with each subsequent episode. Like the series, “GoT” is often about tough decisions in which there is no “good choice.” More so than “Tales From the Borderlands” (which I enjoy too, for the record) or the sometimes-frustrating “Life is Strange,” “Game of Thrones” feels both like a carefully-crafted experience and something over which you maintain complete authorship.


4. The Order: 1886
Don’t yell at me. I agree, “The Order” is not a great game. It’s too short and too repetitious. So why is it in the top five? Because it’s a game that all PS4 owners were talking about at some point this year. It’s essential, even if it’s imperfect. It’s a game that was clearly developed from a perspective of world creation—look at this incredible environment in which you can play! And it contains some of the most impressive graphics of the year. The fact that Sony gave us such a gorgeous playground but failed to really give us the freedom to play within it is indicative of what gamers want in 2015. It’s also simply better than you’ve heard. Yes, it’s short. But it’s also BEAUTIFUL. I find it fascinating that it’s been so quickly written off by gamers. 5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Speaking of beautiful games, if you want to show off the visual capabilities of your PS4, this is the game with which to do it. It’s the most impressive world creation on the PS4 to date, as you really feel like this saga takes place in a fully-realized, alive universe. There are surprises around every corner. There are new enemies, new treasures, new challenges. This is video game design as immersion—a place you don’t just visit, you experience. And a place you want to return to again and again to see all the things you’ve missed.

You know Android is the most popular mobile operating system on Earth: About 80 percent of smartphones run on it. And, according to mobile security experts at the firm Zimperium, there's a gaping hole in the software — one that would let hackers break into someone's phone and take over, just by knowing the phone's number. Scary huh?


So How Is This Possible?

In this attack, the target would not need to goof up — open an attachment or download a file that's corrupt. The malicious code would take over instantly, the moment you receive a text message.

"This happens even before the sound that you've received a message has even occurred," says Joshua Drake, security researcher with Zimperium and co-author of Android Hacker's Handbook. "That's what makes it so dangerous. [It] could be absolutely silent. You may not even see anything."

Here's how the attack would work: The bad guy creates a short video, hides the malware inside it and texts it to your number. As soon as it's received by the phone, Drake says, "it does its initial processing, which triggers the vulnerability."

The messaging app Hangouts instantly processes videos, to keep them ready in the phone's gallery. That way the user doesn't have to waste time looking. But, Drake says, this setup invites the malware right in.

If you're using the phone's default messaging app, he explains, it's "a tiny bit less dangerous." You would have to view the text message before it processes the attachment. But, to be clear, "it does not require in either case for the targeted user to have to play back the media at all," Drake says.

Once the attackers get in, Drake says, they'd be able do anything — copy data, delete it, take over your microphone and camera to monitor your every word and move. "It's really up to their imagination what they do once they get in," he says.
