Education / 9 Nigerians Get £35,000 Scholarship by phemygee(m): 6:53pm On Aug 05, 2009
Preparation for Life (PFL) Nigeria, a UK- based career counseling firm has awarded scholarship worth 35,000 Pounds to nine Nigerian students to pursue postgraduate programmes in various universities in the United Kingdom.
The firm also opened another branch of its Nigerian operations at Eric Moore Close, a highbrow area of Surulere, Lagos. This is in addition to its existing offices in Abuja, Ibadan , Port-Harcourt , Victoria Island and Ikeja.
The nine recipients were selected out of the 24 people that applied for the offer through a draw carried out by guest at the weekend in Lagos. A breakdown of the scholarship fund shows that Miss Michelle Iyalla-Harry received 10,000 pounds, Ayodeji Adelegan, Linda Eseoghene Efetie and Ikenna Ochei received 5,000 pounds each, while five others shared 10,000 pounds.
Presenting the awards, Chairman of the company, Mr. Lawrie Green emphasised the importance of quality education, particularly in these days of global recession. “Education has never been more important, as more and more employers tighten their belts; many are reducing the numbers of staff they are employing. Only those with top quality education and skills behind them can expect to be competitive in today's employment market. So I would urge you and your loved ones to be making your investment for life right now.”
He added that his organisation was committed to assisting students who have excelled in their academics and also give back to the system it was working with. “PFL is demonstrating its commitment to excellent students coming out of Nigeria by putting back into the system and help students who are exceptional. We believe this scholarship will go a long way in assisting the selected students with their education in UK ”, he said
Green noted that his organisation does not intend to contribute to the problems of brain drain, but to encourage students to come back and contribute to the upbringing of their country.
Regional Director, Africa , Mrs. Femi Sangowawa said the organisation offers services such as visa and interview guidance; a comprehensive range of advice on studying in the UK; admission as well as scholarship opportunities in UK universities.
The Human Resources Manager, Mrs. Yinka Yomi-Edun said its expansion to the Lagos Mainland through the new branch in Surulere would further avail its numerous clients of the company's services, which is a sure way to acquire university education in the UK. “Our personnel and first class facilities in the new branch will ensure that we deliver quality services that we are known for.”
While commending the organisation for the initiative, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Sarah Adebisi Sosan said it was assisting the government in educating the students by offering them scholarships that would enable them become good citizens.
Sosan who was represented by the Director of Higher Education in the Ministry, Mrs. Abimbola Awoyinfa said, “we are aware of the civil disturbances going on in some parts of the country where unemployed youths are burning down properties, PFL is not living everything to the hands of government alone, but helping to educate the students.” The new office was commissioned shortly after the award ceremony by Green, assisted by the company's Regional Director, Africa, Mrs. Femi Sangowawa, Country Manager Mr. Godson Ideozu, and the Regional Manager Nigeria Mrs. Bukky Awofisayo.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Alonso Passes Real Medical by phemygee(m): 6:39pm On Aug 05, 2009
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has completed his move to Real Madrid after passing a medical at the Bernabeu.
The 27-year-old had let it be known that he wanted to leave Anfield earlier in the summer and has finally got his wish after sealing his transfer to the Spanish capital for a fee of around £30million. Alonso joined Liverpool in the summer of 2004 from Real Sociedad and went gone on to score 18 goals in 210 appearances for the Reds in all competitions. He almost left Merseyside 12 months ago, coming close to joining Italian giants Juventus, before returning to the fold and enjoying a fine season for Rafa Benitez's side.
Real have also signed Alvaro Arbeloa, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Esteban Granero, Raul Albiol and Karim Benzema this summer but technical director Jorge Valdano insists there will be no more new arrivals before the start of the season. He said: "With this signing, the chapter is now closed on transfers.
"Before the start of the pre-season, the coach Manuel Pellegrini told us it was necessary to strengthen two positions - the defence and the midfield, and that is what we have done.

Well, i support ASUU partial coz Federal Government can do better. Nigerian Lecturers are the least paid in Africa. Imagine a legislator's newspaper allowance is around (N350, 000). What are these people doing over there is not. PA and other hierachy official does most of their work and their own is just to say nei nei when they get to assembly, A senator earning annual will pay for the whole professors in Nigeria Universities and will still have enough cash in his pocket. This money belongs us, let them splash dis money on us. We are the leaders of tomorrow,

My brother, how do you think we can fight corruption when Politics has been turn to a business. You invest in it and make up for the investment when you won the election. That is what people do now, All we need to do is to work on ourselves individually, that is the best thing to do for now,

Politics / National Anthem by phemygee(m): 4:21pm On Aug 01, 2009
Based on my reasoning over some months now, i discovered the secret why our Ruling President has failed to rise up to expectation. I am very sure that he does not know the interpretation of the National Anthem. If he could read between the lines, then he will definitely find a solution to our problem. How do we think he can do that? When he does not even know the 7-point Agenda he has been clamoring right from the time he was appointed the President of Nigeria. Up till know nothing has been done in the agenda he has in stock, well i won't blame him for that because it was written on the paper for him to read out.

Do we Nigerians really make use of this National Anthem??
Religion / Islamist Militant Leader, Mohammed Yusuf, Captured, Killed by phemygee(m): 3:37am On Aug 01, 2009
After five days of sectarian attacks, the Islamist militant sect, Boko Haram, has finally succumbed to the firepower of security forces as its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, 39, fled his Maiduguri base.
Yusuf did not, however, go far as he was captured and shot dead by a combined team of army and police personnel, which had been trying to contain the sectarian unrest which had claimed at least 600 lives across five northern states.
Daily Sun gathered last night that Yusuf was seized after a manhunt involving military helicopters and armed police.
There were conflicting accounts on how the Islamist leader was arrested. One claimed he was arrested hiding in his in-laws house after fleeing his enclave, while another said he was seized on the outskirts of the Borno State capital.
“Mohammed Yusuf has been arrested. He is now at the Giwa barracks (in Maiduguri metropolis),” Borno State Police Commissioner, Christopher Dega, confirmed to reporters.
However, Assistant Inspector General of Police, in charge of Zone 12, Moses Anegbode, later told newsmen Yusuf had been killed.
Also, Yusuf’s Deputy, Abubakar Shekau, was killed along with about 200 of the sect’s followers in the all-night raid on the sect’s base on Wednesday.
At the end of the operation, which lasted several hours, scores of corpses of the sect’s members littered the roads leading to Bayan Quarters, base of the Islamic extremists and the building in the compound.
A source at a Maiduguri hospital described the casualty figure as ‘countless’. “Some of them are still lying in the streets and around the police headquarters.
Our hospital mortuary is full, while those injured in the fighting are lying on the floors of the hospital for lack of space.” Recovered from the building, which also houses a mosque, according to Colonel Ahanotu, who led the operation were, about 20 cars, including a Sport Utility Vehicle, one Toyota Camry, Honda cars and about 200 motorcycles. Other items found in the residence were, sewing machines, deep freezers, food items, and home-made petrol bombs.
Borno State Governor, Ali Sheriff, also visited the scene to assess the comfort in which the self-styled anti-West sect leader lived. “How can a man who condemned western lifestyle be watching cable satellite, eat canned food, produced and packaged by technologists who attended Western schools?” A senior government official who accompanied the governor asked.
Unarguably the bloodiest sectarian crisis in the country since the Jos mayhem, last November, the Boko Haram disturbances which started in Bauchi last Sunday and spread to Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Sokoto and Kano states have so far claimed at least 600 people, with about 3,000 residents already displaced.
It would be recalled that the Taliban leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was once dragged before a Maiduguri High Court for public incitement, but he challenged the Borno government through his counsel for alleged infringement on his freedom of expression.
Lanky Mohammed Yusuf, a Hausa descent from Yobe was described as a quiet man, who could hardly hurt a fly.
Those who encountered him claimed he was schooled in the Islamiya sect Quranic School in the old city of Maiduguri. He was said to have attended the Maiduguri Arabic Teachers College (although this claim has been faulted). By 2000, Mohammed Yusuf became noticeable in Borno with his radical preaching on Islam. He set up a camp on the border with the Niger Republic, from where he launched series of attacks on the police.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Football Honours Sir Bobby Robson by phemygee(m): 3:27am On Aug 01, 2009
Leading figures from the world of football and politics have paid tribute to Sir Bobby Robson after his death at the age of 76 following a long battle with cancer. Robson was a renowned and revered figure in football and led England to the World Cup semi-finals at Italia 90, the closest they have come to repeating their 1966 success on home soil.
Fellow managers, his former players, Prime Ministers past and present, and the presidents of Fifa and Uefa were among those saluting his life and achievements. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson mourned the passing of a "great friend, a wonderful individual and tremendous football man." Former Prime Minister Tony Blair called him "one of the nicest, most caring and genuine people I ever met - a real Geordie gentleman."
Here is a selection of the tributes paid by the football fraternity and others to one of the game's most respected and popular figures.
