PoliticsGoodluck Jonathan To Be Keynote Speaker At NLA Merit Award by philchudi(op): 9:02pm On Jul 27, 2016
Dr Goodluck Jonathan is to be keynote speaker at the 2016 US Nigerian Lawyers Association (NLA) merit awards
– The ex-president will give the speech at the event which is scheduled to hold in New York
– Tickets for the event are to be sold at a $100 for members and $130 for non-members
Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) has been selected to give the keynote speech of the United States Nigerian Lawyers Association (NLA) Merit Awards Dinner.
Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is to be the keynote speaker at the US Nigerian Lawyers Association (NLA) merit award in New York.
Following an announcement by Nexus U Sea, president of the association, GEJ is to give the speech at the event which has been scheduled for October 29 in New York.
The president of the association said tickets for the event at on sale on the NLA website. “Early Bird tickets are $100 for NLA Members and $130 for Non-Members. We recommend that you purchase your tickets before Standard Rates apply. The Early Bird period will expire on August 31, 2016 at 11:59PM. Standard Rates are $130 for NLA Members and $160 for Non-Members. The ticket price for everyone at the Door will be $180,” Nexus Sea noted.
According to the NLA, the venue of the event is the 630 Second Ballroom, at 630 Second Avenue.
Mr Sea said the keynote speaker will be joining a long list of Nigerian dignitaries who have attended the event in the past.
He named such celebrities as including: “Professor Wole Soyinka, a 1986 Noble Laureate in Literature, and world-renowned writer, poet and playwright; Professor Chinua Achebe, world-renowned writer and author of the award-winning novel (Things Fall Apart); and Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former World Bank Managing Director and former Nigerian Minister of Finance.”

According to the NLA website, the annual Merit Awards Dinner are held
“to celebrate the achievements of distinguished individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the legal profession and towards the advancement of public and community service, and to give out scholarships to law students of color from across the country, based on need and merit.”
It was not immediately clear what President Jonathan will focus on in his address. Since losing the presidency last year, he has spent a lot of time abroad speaking to audiences about the success of his administration in tackling corruption and boosting democracy.
In the next few weeks, he is scheduled to launch his foundation, the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, which he announced last year in a letter to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In the letter, he said he was back to work following the taking of power by President Muhammadu Buhari, “to continue to serve and dedicate my life to promoting peace and prosperity for all,” and that he would be “devoting the rest of my life and energy to making the world a better place.”
Dr Jonathan recently canceled his speech at the Africa Peace Awards Dinner at the California State University in Sacramento due to health problems.
The information was provided by Jonathan’s special assistant on new media, Reno Omokri, who represented the ex-president during the ceremony.
The news was confirmed by Ernest Uwazie, director of the Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution, who added that Jonathan is hospitalized as of the time.
However, Sahara Reporters claimed that the former leader was malingering to avoid protests organised by the LGBT community
against the event and Jonathan in particular.
Commenting on the situation, Mr Uwazie said: “He (Reno Omokri) will be available to meet with anybody like the LGBT group that has expressed interest in meeting with him, before the awards dinner. We’re also looking at the possibility of some Facetime technology with Goodluck Jonathan at the hospital where he is.”

PoliticsBiafra Will Not Stand, Buhari Vows by philchudi(op): 8:20am On Mar 06, 2016
South-East Based Coalition of Human Rights Organizations, SBCHROs, has accused security forces of killing 80 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and their supporters between August 30, 2015 and February 9, 2016.
buhari biafra
The accusation came on a day President Muhammadu Buhari vowed that Biafra will not stand.
The coalition also estimated those maimed at 170, just as it put the total number of those arrested, detained, charged or kept in captivity without trial at 400.
In what it termed as the concluding part of its letter to the Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, and the Minister of Interior, Gen Abdulrahman Dambazzau (retd), entitled: ‘Ceaseless Killing Of Unarmed Citizens In Nigeria: Why Security Chiefs Must Desist From Provoking More Insurgencies Capable Of Plunging Nigeria Into Syrian Style (Concluding Part)’, SBCHROs alleged that the a rmy, police and navy specifically killed 22 IPOB members on February 9, 2016 in the compound of the National High School in Aba, Abia State; maimed over 30 others, murdered 13 of them and dumped their bodies inside a burrow pit located, along Aba-Port Harcourt Road in Abia State.
The group added that the army was responsible for 60 percent of the killings, police 30 percent and others including the navy,10 percent, stressing that the video clips of the Aba National High School massacre and the Aba-Port Hartcourt Road burrow pit dumping of 13 murdered IPOB members were available on request.
The letter was copied to the UN Secretary General and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, among others.
Efforts to reach the Director of Defence Information, Colonel Rabe Abubakar, last night, to comment on the coalition’s allegations proved abortive.
In a related development, PresidentBuhari stated, last night, that Nigeria would not tolerate the agitation for Biafra.“Speaking to Aljazeera television during his visit to Qatar, last week, Buhari recalled that over two million lives were lost during the Nigeria civil war between 1967 to 1970 that resulted from the demand for Biafra.“He said: "At least two millions Nigerians were killed in the Biafra war. And for somebody to wake up, may be they weren’t born then, looking for Biafra after two millions people were killed, they are joking with the security and Nigeria won’t tolerate Biafra.”
“Also speaking on the economy and the pressure to devalue the Naira, the President stated that Nigeria was prepared to go against the advice on International Monetary Fund, IMF.“He maintained that the devaluation of the Naira would not pay Nigeria, saying the country was purely an import nation.“He also stated their despite the plummeting crude oil prices in the international market, it would pay Nigeria to remain in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC. ““If it is against our national interest, why can’t we go against the IMF advice?” Buhari asks

EducationNigerian Professor Delivers Ground-breaking Research At University Of Sussex by philchudi(op): 10:29pm On Feb 21, 2016
On Thursday, 11th February 2016, the Sussex Nigerian Society hosted Professor Isa Hussaini Marte, a Professor of Pharmacology, University of Maiduguri, a visiting Professor, University of Virginia, USA and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
In an event titled “Meet the Nigerian Scientist” organised by the Society, Professor Isa discussed with the Nigerian students in Sussex about their discovery of Nigerian traditional herbs that show substantial efficacy against cancer, better than the currently used cancer drugs.
He described to our community how he moved to the US in the late 90’s after his Ph.D. and eventually developed to a competent scientist that received over $5 million of research funds for research into cancer.
Prof. Isa came to the University of Sussex on invitation by the School of Lifesciences of the University, to present his team’s discovery of the potential anti-cancer traditional herbs.
On Friday, 12th February, he was received warmly by the Vice – Chancellor of the University of Sussex, the Head of School of Lifesciences and other Professors, following which he was given a gift by the Vice – Chancellor.
Later in the Friday evening, Professor Isa delivered his research findings at the University’s Genome Damage and Stability Centre to experts and young scientists, in a talk that was brilliantly fascinating, titled – “Exploitation of medicinal plant compounds in the search for novel cancer therapeutic agents.”.
His talk explained how his team investigate the scientific rationale for the tradition uses of Nigerian Medicinal plants.
How they now discover novel plants with anti-cancer properties.
They have isolated and characterised the compounds from these plant sources and tested them against many cancer cell lines.
He said “We are working to develop cancer therapy from Nigerian traditional plants. We have conducted an extensive screening of many plants with anti-cancer properties, tested them in cell and animal models. Our research has created an evidence base to demonstrate that eight naturally growing medicinal plants in Nigeria have strong anti-cancer properties, especially against breast cancer.”
Professor Isa also praised the “world-class facilities” at the University of Sussex and discussed possible collaboration with the School of Lifesciences regarding research.
The Nigerian Ag. High Commissioner in London, also attended Professor Isa’s research talk and was very impressed that such research is conducted in Nigeria.
He praised Professor Isa and encouraged him to continue his research as it shows promise for solving world problem and positively influences the global reputation of Nigeria.
The Ag. High Commissioner also held a Question and Answer session over Lunch with the Nigerian students in Sussex where he advised them to work hard in their studies and acquire useful skills that can drive the development of Nigeria.
Inspired by Prof. Isa’s talk, the Sussex Nigeria Society have launched a campaign to raise money for the Breast Cancer Association of Nigerian “BRECAN” to help disadvantaged women access free clinical breast examination and towards BRECAN’s awareness-raising campaigns.
Details of Professor Isa’s visit has been published in the weekly bulletin of the University of Sussex “Nigerian High Commissioner & cancer specialist visit Sussex.

Lagos Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who disclosed this at a media parley with Judiciary Editors and Correspondents in Alausa, said the Mobil Courts will operate in full compliance with the rules of natural justice, equity and good conscience.

Kazeem also pledged to introduce the use of information technology to enhance judicial reforms in order to accelerate dispensation of justice.

Science/TechnologyHow The Dream Of First African Car Z-600 Of Nigerian Extraction Died.(photos) by philchudi(op): 1:27pm On Dec 08, 2015
In 1997, a brilliant Igbo Electrical Engineer and Lecturer at the Federal polytechnic Nekede, Dr. Ezekiel Izogu designed and developed the Izuogu Z-600, the first African indigenous manufactured car.
The car was described by the BBC as ‘ the African dream machine’ as 90% of its parts were sourced locally . At a projected sales cost of 2000 dollars, it would have taken the world by storm and become the cheapest and most affordable car on earth. With mass production planned under Izogu Motors plant in Naze owerri, the prospects of an industrial revolution in Igbo land and Nigeria, was in the making.
The car was equipped with a self made 1.8L four cylinder engine that got 18mpg and allowedthe car to achieve a top speed of 140 km/h. Front Wheel Drive (FWD) was chosen over Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) because a transmission tunnel, which RWD would require, would be more expensive to fabricate.
So 90% of the car’s components were made locally. General Sani Abacha set up a 12 man panel of inquiry made up of professionals to ascertain the road worthiness and authenticity of the car and after several days of probing, the committee gave Dr. Izuogu’s car a clean bill of health recommending that some of the bumps on the body of the car be smoothened. It is worthy to note that this was five years before India built their first car known as the Indi.
At a well organized unveiling ceremony which had General Abacha represented by Oladipo Diya, over 20 foreign ambassadors and thousands of people in attendance, the federal government promised a grant of 235 million naira to Dr.Izuogu.
An excited Dr Izuogu is still waiting for that grant till today. No dime was released to him. In 2006, th monetary terms, but also time (about 10 years) and the energy it took to design and produce the moulds. “To worsen the matter, our design notebook was also stolen,” he stated.
He regarded the incident as a national economic disaster because the nation had lost a technological and intellectual property. This Press was quiet about this story. The set back and governments attitude frustrated Izuogu and his dream died.
