Crime / Nigerian Arrested In Biggest Bust Of Cocaine Traficking In India On New Year Eve by Philipponzaghi: 3:49am On Dec 14, 2023 |
Days after the Central Crime Branch (CCB) Police made its biggest-ever drug haul in the city, more details have emerged on the kingpin who stored and distributed banned substances across the city. The police had arrested a Nigerian national from whose possession, 16 kg MDMA and 500 grams cocaine was seized. The Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda on Tuesday said that the seizure was the biggest ever in the history. 16 kg MDMA worth Rs 16 crore and 500 grams cocaine worth Rs 5 crore was seized. Accused Leonard Okwudili, a Nigerian citizen had come to Bengaluru on a business visa. He had claimed that he was in the country for the garment business. But, he was involved in procuring and distributing drugs across the city. When the police raided his rented house in Ramamurthy Nagar, the police found a huge quantity of MDMA drugs in various forms like powder and crystals. The accused had stored the drugs in soap boxes, chocolate boxes, and in covers between new dresses. How the accused procured drugs The accused had developed a network of drug peddlers in several areas of the country. According to police sources, the accused used to procure drugs from Delhi. Through his associates, the drug was then transported from Delhi to Bengaluru via trains as the security checks were almost nil. Once the drugs reached Bengaluru, Leonard used to store the drugs in soap boxes, chocolate packets and in between new dresses to avoid detection. The accused rented several houses in the city from where the drugs were distributed to several peddlers. He reportedly earned more than a lakh rupees per day which was sent back to Nigeria. The accused owned several posh bungalows back home. The accused had procured more drugs this time as he had planned to distribute them in the New Year parties to be held in the city. The police have got his custody and are interrogating him to find the details of his associates.

In a late-night operation on Saturday, a team from the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police apprehended three Nigerian nationals who were found to be in possession of drugs, including 554 grams of mephedrone (MD) and 2.6 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) in Nallasopara. The collective value of the contraband is pegged at Rs.55.92 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Tulinj police station, under the instructions of Senior Police Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar, laid a trap and rounded up the suspects from the terrace of a building in the Pragati Nagar area of Nallasopara (east) at around 3 am. The information proved to be accurate, as upon frisking, the trio identified as Onyekosi Chibuzo Daklane (38), Nwaobasi Chibueze (38), and Onye Ikenna Bennth (36) were found to be in possession of the drugs. The police also recovered a packing machine and plastic pouches, revealing their involvement in active drug peddling. Apart from verifying their documents, including passports and visas, to ascertain the authenticity of their stay in the country, the police are scanning their activities and antecedents to find out if they have any criminal cases registered against them in the past. An offense under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, has been registered at the Tulinj police station against the trio, who have been remanded to police custody till November 30 after they were produced before the court.
