Former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has commended the leadership of Ohaneze Nd’Igbo, Lagos State chapter, for its resolve to join forces with the Strategic Team to ensure the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan. Tukur gave the commendation at his residence in Abuja when the leadership of the Strategic Team and Ohaneze visited him to intimate him on their resolve to work together for the re-election of President Jonathan in 2015. Expressing happiness over the coming together of the two organisations, Tukur described the resolve as not just being about the next election, but the next generation, adding that the resolve of Nd’Igbo to work for Jonathan had given him confidence in the future of Nigeria. “President Jonathan has been focused on delivering good governance and development of the nation, hence there is no point contemplating change at this point in the life of our nation. The life of the ordinary man has been impacted positively,” Tukur said. He urged Nigerians, particularly the younger generation, to support the continuity of President Jonathan who has demonstrated willingness to better the nation. Earlier, the chairman of Igbos in Lagos State, Chief Fabian Onwughali explained that the leadership of Nd’Igbo in Lagos had ex-rayed the strides of President Jonathan and had resolved to take active part in deciding who becomes the president in 2015. The organisation noted that though it was not a partisan organisation, the challenges it had gone through within the last few years had given it impetus to participate in the political space to better the lot of its members. For his part, chairman of Strategic Team, Hon. Akpan Micah Umoh hinted that the decision of Nd’Igbo to partner with them was a sign that the average Nigerian irrespective of geographical, religious and political affiliations was beginning to appreciate the genuine intentions of President Jonathan in transforming the country. He stressed that the achievement the Strategic Team had recorded so far was because of the vision of its leader, Alhaji Bamangar Tukur, adding that the membership of the organisation was in all the electoral wards in the country. http://nigerianpilot.com/tukur-commends-ndigbo-over-support-for-jonathan/ |

Bauchi State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has debunked claims that he is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing his political opponents of being behind the rumour. The governor, in a chat with journalists in Abuja, pointed out that he had never contemplated leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC. Yuguda, who described himself as a die-hard supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan, wondered how he could have left him half way into his presidency when he needed him most to consolidate his position on the political turf. The governor pointed out that since Jonathan came on board as the country’s president, he had remained one of his unrepentant supporters and would continue to work for his success. “Let it be known to those who did not know that I remain one of the unrepentant loyalists of President Jonathan and I will continue to work with him even after he might have left office as our president,” he said. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=80186 |

realborn: Defeat?? Am I in a contest with Mr President? Are you averse to a better leadership than what we have now? Or is this the best ever you have ever dreamed of? I am praying for a new charismatic leader with the right brain capacity, knowledge and understanding to do needful at the apposite time and you categories that as noise making and acceptance of defeat? The performance of the president may not be to your expectations, but the fact remains that Nigerians have never had it so good. #TeamJonathanTill2019 #BringBackOurPresident |

Fifteen out of the 16 ECOWAS countries have ganged up against Nigeria’s industrialisation even as the Federal Government has sworn not to sign any trade agreements that will harm the Nigerian manufacturers. This was disclosed by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) during their 42nd Annual General Meeting held recently in Lagos. Chief Kola Jamodu, the immediate past President of the manufacturers, had in his speech told the gathering that 15 out of the 16 ECOWAS member nations don’t want the country to be industrialised and are working frantically to frustrate Nigeria’s industrial development plans. “MAN believes that the federal government’s efforts to enlist the support of other members of the African Union to reject the Economic Partnership Agreement ,EPA in its present form to be sustained. We also appeal that the federal government should continue its effort to convince other ECOWAS member state of the potential dangers of EPA. No country can develop without protecting its industries and Nigeria stands the risk of having its market flooded with European goods with resultant negative effect on our industries and economy, if EPA is endorsed in its present form. This will also impact negatively on employment generation, which is one of the critical aspects of Government Transformation Agenda and the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP)” he said. In his response, the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, said that government has developed Nigeria’s first comprehensive plan to provide long term financing to industry and ensuring that any trade agreements signed will not threaten the Nigerian manufacturers. “We must boost our industrial capacity; create more jobs and wealth in the economy. History has shown that no nation has ever become prosperous by relying only on export of its raw materials endowments without putting in place a vibrant manufacturing sector. Therefore, value addition to primary commodities to produce intermediate and finished goods for domestic and export markets shall be one of the key areas of focus of our new industrial policy and we believe firmly that the Industrial Revolution Plan can help in achieving this goal,” he said. In cement manufacturing, he noted that for the first time ever in Nigeria’s history, last year the country became a net exporter of cement, from a country that produced only 2 million metric tons of cement a year in 2003, today, have a capacity to produce 39.5 million metric tons per annum and have started selling to our neighbours. Speaking during the event, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, said that the Federal Government had already put structures in place to reduce the cost of borrowing for manufacturers. He said, “For the first time in decades, the Nigerian government has decided to tackle the biggest challenges that you Manufacturers have faced for years. This is to ensure that Manufacturing in Nigeria becomes truly competitive. In the area of financing, Nigerian manufacturers have always struggled with the high cost of funding in Nigeria, yet nothing was done. But I am glad to inform you today that as part of the NIRP, we have put together our nation’s first comprehensive real sector funding intervention under a programme called the “Financing Value Chain Initiative”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/ecowas-members-nigerias-industrialisation-bid-man/ |
Politicians, who are eying the Presidency in 2015, are putting finishing touches to declare their intention, The PUNCH has learnt. Among them are President Goodluck Jonathan; a former military Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwanso. According to the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, party primaries will start on October 2, 2014 Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primary, investigations by our correspondent showed that the President’s declaration is expected to come up at the end of this month or early in October. Already, some governors, especially from the South-South, South-East and North-Central, are preparing for the declaration, which a presidency source said, would be “earth-shaking.” One of the governors involved in the arrangement, told our correspondent that the date for the President’s declaration was being worked out. He said it was likely that the declaration would not come before the declaration of those who are ready to contest the seat with the President either in his party, the PDP, or in the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress. He said, “The preparation is ongoing. It will come either at the end of this month or early October. “So, those who want to contest the ticket with him in either the PDP or the APC should get ready. The President and his team are ready.” The source, however, said both the President and his team are expecting stiff opposition from the a North-East and North-West, where he said the candidature of the President was not favourably being received. As part of the declaration plan, the Presidency ordered the screening of all the groups supporting the re-election of the President. Also, supporters of Buhari are eagerly waiting for him to return to the country from his trip overseas this weekend and round off his consultations in preparatory to his declaration. Buhari has contested for the position three times, but has failed to win. A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Alhaji Umaru Dembo, who like Buhari, is a member of the APC, said the former head of state would definitely contest for the party’s sole ticket. Also, a former governorship candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change in Enugu State, Chief Osita Okechukwu, told our correspondent that Buhari would meet some notable national leaders of the APC next week in continuation of his ongoing consultation. On his part, Abubakar is considering to declare his presidential ambition on Wednesday, September 24. As part of the preparations, sources close to his campaign office at Jabi, Abuja said several venues were being considered for the declaration. Some of these venues include the Eagles Square, Sheraton Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Yar’Adua Centre and the National Stadium. Atiku’s spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, refused to speak on the matter when contacted. “I can to confirm or deny any date now. But what I can tell you is that the former Vice President will definitely contest,” he said. Kwankwanso is said to have concluded arrangements to formally declare for the presidency as he is said to have nearly concluded his nationwide consultations which he embarked upon on his presidential ambition. Already, posters of the governor have been pasted in strategic locations in many states with such inscriptions as ‘Kwankwaso for national assignment.’ Already, 34 members of the APC at the Kano House of Assembly have endorsed his ambition. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-may-declare-in-october/
