dustydee: I guess the military men in Lagos and other parts of the country that are brutalising civilians are also Boko Haram members dressed in military uniforms. Just recently we read of people who were forced to drink from a puddle of water by the military. If that could happen in a normal society, what do you think will happen at the war front? That amounts to abuse of human rights and if you are sincere you'd admit that the Nigerian military has very poor human rights record. Propaganda, lies and deceptions. Don't worry, APC's poisonous fingers will be forced into their throat this time around. |

By Festus Yinka Few years back, In the heat of our politicking, some opposition politicians in APC (one of them is a Governor now) were sending false information to the international community about the Nigerian army.
They sent videos of Boko Haram members wearing army uniforms and beheading innocent civilians and the they claimed they were members of the Nigeria armed forces killing innocent civilians. They sent some to amnesty international, thinking they were fighting Jonathan.
Some youths in Yobe beheaded an innocent operative of DSS while those of Bornu were wearing t-shirts with inscriptions like "I love Boko haram". They refused to support the military, they were supporting their brothers. The northern elites weren't left out as they openly and covertly gave support to boko haram thinking it will further their desire to take back the presidency.
Jonathan was confused but tried to be calm.
The Bornu elders brought all sort of charges against the military and Ihejirika while they were shielding boko haram and in fact a leading northern leader once said killing boko haram fighters was injustice to the North.
Petitions fell upon petitions at Amnesty international from the Northern elements. To them, they were doing politics. Jonathan must go and it doesn't matter how we do it, power must just return to the North.
Our military was accused of human rights abuses by Amnesty International while boko haram continues to unleash terror. The military lost credibility and some of our army chiefs were threatened with prosecutions of war crime while no one asks Shekau why he is killing.
United States and her allies were compelled by a particular Leahy law not to sell sophisticated weapons to militaries with human rights abuse tags like the current Nigerian army.
All efforts by the Jonathan administration to lobby US and UK governments to sell weapons to Nigerian military fell on deaf ears while boko haram continued its killing spree in the face of our poorly armed military.
And Jonathan looked eastwards after the south African mess (also courtesy opposition politicians) and found help in China, Parkistan and Russia. But time was against him. The elections are close, the deed is done. The clueless, weak and corrupt tag stuck on him. He was labelled a failure for not being able to protect his citizens. That's politics.
He got the weapons, shifted elections by six weeks amidst all sort of mischievous allegations and the military found its rhythm and in six weeks, boko haram fell and it's armies were chased tail in legs out of sambisa forest.
And he lost the elections despite that.
Now, those who destroyed the Nigerian military in the name of politics have taken over the government. Boko haram is back in full force and those who promised to lead from the front are no where to be found.
Boko haram have been able to regroup and now controls five local governments again and our press who were very active in spreading boko haram gospel back then are suddenly quiet. It was all about Jonathan before now.
The citizens now watch helplessly as the killings continue and those who have the courage to ask questions are labelled as unpatriotic by the idol worshippers who worships men like gods.
The APC led government delegation was in America but to the surprise of some, America bluntly refused to go into arms deal with Nigeria. Those who blackmailed the Nigerian army and accused them of human rights abuses are now the ones begging US to sell arms to them.
And like I wrote yesterday that "those who intend to live in glass houses should not throw stone from their mud houses because karma is a bitch, she respects no one" ----------
Personally, I urge those that created this mess to clean it up. You propagandists that allowed GEJ-hate make you sabotage your own country, please, clean up your mess, I'm not going to clean it up for you, I'm not going to help clean it up for you. Label me whatever you wish, I have no issues with it, just CLEAN YOUR MESS! You are now complaining about Leahy Law ? Drag your stupid asses to China and Russia for crissake and stop spoiling our already spoilt name further. Trust me, that last thing you need is U.S. fighting you. Unfortunately, you have started the diplomatic row by blackmailing them on their own soil. No no no no, you made a grave mistake there

Politics › Dasuki: Are We Back To The Dark Ages? THISDAY. by PhockPhockMan(op): 5:07am On Jul 25, 2015 |
The recent simultaneous invasion of the houses of the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd) in Abuja and Sokoto by men of the Department of State Services (DSS) has elicited mixed reactions among Nigerians on the propriety or otherwise of such raids even when it was carried out with a valid search warrant. Since the incident, Nigerians have been sharply divided between opinions on the true intentions of the DSS authorities and the style of operation employed in the course of the saga. Following this, the Service issued a statement attempting to clarify the issue while blaming Dasuki for the imbroglio.
However, on taking a closer look at the press release by the DSS, one can say that as noble as the cause of the Service might be made to look, there are some elements that portray the exercise as a witch hunt and the press release by the security outfit was only an after-thought.
The gravity of the offence upon which the Service acted was too dangerous to toy with. To claim to have had credible intelligence linking Dasuki with treasonable felony against the Nigerian State only to find seven high caliber rifles, (high assault weapons), several magazines and military related gears and twelve exotic cars five of which were bullet-proof makes a caricature of the seriousness of the whole exercise. If, indeed, the DSS had such credible intelligence linking the former NSA to treasonable felony against the Nigerian State, why did they go to his houses with only a search warrant and no arrest warrant.
When did suspects of treason start enjoying the liberty of freedom even for a minute after being linked to such a grave offence? Who were the suspected accomplices? Or did Dasuki plan to overrun Nigeria alone and with weapons not even anywhere enough to overthrow a rag-tag local government not to talk of the Nigerian State? Why do we make a mess of serious issues in this country either out of overzealousness or the appetite to be seen to be working while in actual fact we are not doing anything but only putting up an image of ourselves like a people in a clownish circus show?
The DSS’ claim that Dasuki was not supposed to have military guards two days after he was removed as NSA and that such guards should have been withdrawn from him after he left office was just another shocker.
Whose responsibility was it to withdraw the military guards? Was it Dasuki’s responsibility to withdraw the guards or that of the military authorities? Did the military authorities order the withdrawal of the guards and Dasuki stopped them from obeying the order? Why did the DSS portray Dasuki as if he deliberately refused to withdraw the guards when he had no such powers? Let it also be made abundantly clear that Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) was entitled to military guards as National Security Adviser. The military guarding his house were not there because Dasuki was a colonel in the Nigerian Army, they were there because the man was our NSA!
Agreed that it is over the board for one man to “own” twelve exotic cars, it is equally preposterous to categorically claim that such cars were “being kept for possible sinister enterprise”. Without holding brief for the former NSA, what the DSS is trying to make Nigerians understand is that the numerous millionaires who own fleet of cars running even beyond twelve are keeping them for “possible sinister enterprise” which in this case meant treason.
While Dasuki may have questions to answer for his actions or inactions while in office as NSA, it is totally unfair and smacks of vengeance and vendetta, the invasion of his houses in the manner the DSS did. To accuse him of treasonable felony and yet allow him to walk free after invading his house with only a search warrant without an arrest warrant shows that the real intentions of the DSS are clouded.
We urge the DSS and other security outfits to be professional and exercise the highest level of restraint and respect for the rights of citizens as expected in a civilised and democratic society like ours as no one is guilty under our law until proven so by competent courts. The razzmatazz with which our security agencies carry out such exercises as the one against Dasuki is part of what makes them lose cases in their numbers when they eventually get to the courts. Instead of them to carry out painstaking investigations against suspects they rather delight in wielding their guns in bravado manner only for their cases to fail repeatedly like packs of cards in court the EFCC style.
Finally, the reason adduced by the Service for that exercise which is “to be proactive and pre-empt individuals with penchant for impunity and lawlessness from putting back the nation to the dark days” in reference to Dasuki is most uncharitable. No matter the issue, those who helped in chasing Boko Haram out of Sambisa forest before their recent renewed incessant attacks deserve some respect and rights even if eventually found guilty by the courts.
That is the norm in civilized climes; that is the least expected from agents of government. I just hope we are not being driven back to the dark days when some of our security forces were used for some sinister enterprise against the citizens who dared to disagree with them and speak out against the government of the day and or its policies! http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/dasuki-are-we-back-to-the-dark-ages-/215532/ |
