By Yinka Olujimi Dear readers, kindly permit me to seize this open access to congratulate Nigeria’s Governor par excellence, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, for the rare privilege and distinguished honour of shaking hands with the President of the United States of America, Mr. Barack Obama, last week.
And, at the White House for that matter!
Oh, my Governor! You are truly a great man.
Tears of joy welled in my eyes as I watched you on television stretching the golden right hand, your head tilted a little to the right while President Obama offered his right arm too, his head dangling to the left. With President Muhammadu Buhari’s approving smile at the background, my day was fully made!
I am sure every true born of Imo State must have shed a tear of joy, seeing the people’s Governor doing them proud at the world stage. It does not matter that the occasion was not for you to display before the global community Nigeria’s great advancement in space technology, stem-cell research, or anything that cerebral. Shaking President Obama’s hand is the perfect gift to humanity for which generations unborn will remember my able Governor.
It is not easy, dear readers, to have an opportunity of a handshake with a US President – a sitting one, for that matter. For our Governor to get such a rare opportunity is simply the Lord’s doing.
How best do we silence those ingrates called civil servants at home who were agitating for the payment of arrears of salaries of few months when those being owed nine months in other states are not making any trouble? The billboards of the great handshake, of course!
It will surely make the enemies green with envy.
The economic benefits that came to Imo State from the famous four-day official trip to the United States? Please don’t ask me. That handshake was enough.
Who wrote President Buhari’s Washington Post article?
It is safe to assume that the article published in the Washington Post newspaper last week, in the first person singular narrative, under the name of Muhammadu Buhari, was written on his behalf by a presidency aide.
Since the article must have had the consent of the President before it was forwarded to the US news medium for publication, it is safe to conclude that they were his words.
The writer goofed at the world stage.
Granted that this is a young administration, we must be charitable enough to concede that certain mistakes cannot but creep in, to spoil the joy of a great outing. Just note, our dear President, that kind of embarrassing error should never be repeated.
Communication experts have little difficulty overlooking speech errors, especially by non-first language speakers who most probably have to think in their local languages and translate before expressing themselves.
The process can be understandably laborious and error-prone.
It is a different ball game for written materials, because the writer has the time to cross-check his views from so many sources that modern day provides for every serious communicator. It is the age of the Internet, remember? You can get information about almost everything at the press of a button.
The written howler by “President Buhari” in the article led many to accuse the president of lying.
Justifying his decision to be thorough in picking members of his cabinet and delaying the announcement till September, the “President” wrote: “When cabinet ministers are appointed in September, it will be some months after I took the oath of office. It is worth noting that Obama himself did not have his full cabinet in place for SEVERAL MONTHS after first taking office; the United States did not cease to function in the interim”. (Emphasis mine).
That article was published in the US with American citizens as primary target readers.
An enterprising young Nigerian author, Okechukwu Ofili, whose ofilispeaks.com blog reads: “Addicted to truth … allergic to shit,” simply punched his computer and came up with these facts that contradicted Buhari: President Barack Obama was inaugurated on January 20, 2009; Hillary Rodham Clinton assumed the office of Secretary of State on January 21, 2009; On January 26, 2009, the U.S. Senate confirmed Geithner’s appointment as Secretary of the Treasury; On December 1, 2008, President-elect Obama announced that Robert Gates would remain in his position as Secretary of Defense during his administration; On December 1, 2008, Obama announced that Eric Holder would be his nominee for Attorney General. Holder was formally nominated on January 20, 2009; Ken Salazar assumed the office of Secretary of the Interior on January 21, 2009 after a unanimous voice vote on the floor of the full Senate; Tom Vilsack assumed the office of Secretary of Agriculture on January 21, 2009; Hilda Solis assumed office as Secretary of Labor on February 24, 2009; Shaun Donovan was confirmed as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development on January 27, 2009; Arne Duncan was confirmed as Secretary of Education on January 21, 2009; Eric Shinseki assumed the office of Secretary of Veterans Affairs on January 20, 2009; Janet Napolitano assumed the office of Secretary of Homeland Security on January 21, 2009; Steven Chu was unanimously confirmed as Secretary of Defense by the U.S. Senate on January 20, 2009; and, former Republican Congressman Ray LaHood was confirmed as Secretary of Transportation on January 23, 2009.
Simply put: Obama appointed 13 cabinet members out of 15 within a week, not SEVERAL MONTHS. http://dailytimes.com.ng/my-governor-my-governor-by-yinka-olujimi/

Politics › Buhari Taking Credit For Jonathan’s Achievements, Says Rep. by PhockPhockMan(op): 1:58pm On Jul 29, 2015 |
Member of the House of Representatives, Linus Okorie, has flayed President Muhammadu Buhari for failure to acknowledge former President Goodluck Jonathan’s legacies and achievements while in office.
Okorie who represents Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State, said he was worried by Buhari’s pattern of appropriating achievements of the immediate past administration and called on him to acknowledge the contributions of former President Goodluck Jonathan to nation building.
Okorie also asked President Buhari to take note of the natural law that “what goes around comes around”, adding that if Buhari cannot be fair to his predecessor, he should expect the same treatment when he leaves office.
He cited examples of projects that were either completed or close to completion before ex-President Jonathan’s exit, noting that it is unfair and unjust for the Buhari administration to take credit for the achievements without acknowledging the role of the initiator and executor.
“Just like the opposition that must be constructive in criticising the government in power, the sitting government owes its predecessor, itself and the wider Nigerian public the moral and social duty of acknowledging the positive accomplishments of their predecessors,” Okorie insisted.
He enumerated some of former President Jonathan’s feats currently being credited to Mr. Buhari such as President Buhari’s acceptance in his recent visit to the United States of America that the U.S. denied Nigeria arms, technology and personnel to fight Boko Haram, which the ex-President had noted but was lampooned by Mr. Buhari’s political party, the APC.
Okorie also cited the recent launch of Kano-Port Harcourt intercity mixed rail service without acknowledging the Jonathan administration that reactivated the railway; the Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna refineries reactivation now refining up to 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day after successful turnaround maintenance initiated and completed by President Jonathan’s government.
Okorie also lamented that President Buhari has been all over the media celebrating Nigeria’s one year polio-free anniversary without any reference to President Jonathan and his policy team that achieved the feat.
“The Jonathan administration introduced cutting edge anti-corruption technology based Public Finance management tools including IPPIS, GIFMIS and TSA, which the present government is now laying claim to for ghost workers elimination and funds accountability and transparency monitoring, without giving credit appropriately.
“The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has also announced that the Abuja rail project, conceived and implemented by the Jonathan administration is 67 per cent completed. This credit should also be formally attributed to the past government.
“I hold the view that the Buhari administration should imbibe the necessary humility and courage to give credit as necessary even as it continues to put the out-gone government to task in established areas of weakness or malfeasance. That is leadership. I also appeal to the media as social engineers to also encourage the Presidency in this onerous responsibility. We owe posterity that much,” Okorie said.

BUHARI'S REPORT CARD SO FAR. **Spent N2.2B on his 4days US Visit. **Shared N2.9Trilion with with states and LGA in 7 weeks. **Shared $2.1Billion from the $5Billion from LNG Tax Income. **The List he sent to G7 and US Govts were all rejected. **His acting Ministers, Oshiomohole (Finance), Okorocha (Foreign affairs) did not perform during US tour. **Inflation rate increased by 8%, stock exchange lost N1.3Trillion in 5 weeks as Investors started losing confidence on the Govt. **Dollar increased from N197 on May 29, 2015 to N249 today. **The 1st time in 4 years, the Federal Government expenditure is not published publicly for Nigerians. **Unemployment level is at all time high. Employers are uncertain of govt policy direction. **Arresting and detention of Nigerians in Dark rooms and Underground cell without charge(s) have returned. NB: This current deplorable situation in the country will definitely not define Buhari's govt, as I am sure he will pick up around November/December. Sadly, Buhari's biggest Enemy is Himself. His attitude towards the "5%" will make or decimate his administration. He is Likely going to achieve about 17 of his 81 election promises. My Only Advise for Buhari, is for him not to use GEJ's administration as yardstick, as that will imply setting a high bar that will be impossible to surpass. On Corruption, playing to the gallery or fighting Corruption on pages of Newspaper or Television will be a bridge to nowhere. Buhari Need very Nigerian's prayer. Right or wrong, His success is our success. https://www.nairaland.com/2485488/buharis-report-card-far |

By Temidayo Akinsuyi – LAGOS National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh on Tuesday said President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to fulfill any of the campaign promises he made to Nigerians during the just concluded general elections.
He also advised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to repent from further deceiving Nigerians with fake and unfulfilled promises in the days ahead.
Metuh, who was reacting to a statement made by President Buhari shortly after his victory in the March 28 presidential election where he promised to effectively deal with Islamist terror sect, Boko Haram within two months of assumption of office said the APC only made the promises it knows cannot be fulfilled ‘just to get the votes of Nigerians’.
Buhari, in an interview on April 1 had said “we know how they (Boko Haram) started and where they are now and we will rapidly give attention to security in the country. And I believe we will effectively deal with them in two months when we get into office.”
Speaking in an exclusive chat with Daily Independent, Metuh said two months after being sworn-in, Nigerians are eagerly waiting for the ruling party to fulfill the promises it made during the electioneering campaign.
These promises according to him include crushing Boko Haram insurgency in two months, payment of N5,000 stipend to unemployed Nigerians, addressing dollar to naira ratio and on fixing the economy which according to him “is getting worse by the day”.
While calling on the APC to desist from deceiving Nigerians, he however said the PDP will refrain from playing politics with sensitive issues such as insecurity but will partner with the APC to find a lasting solution to the Boko Haram menace.
“We have insisted that the president must perform on all the promises he made to Nigerians for which he was elected. But we have only one exception. On the issue of insecurity, we do not want to play politics with security. And the PDP has insisted that we will not make any comment or interfere on the agenda that the president has for security”.
“On matters that are sensitive such as the security of lives and properties of Nigerians, we must unite behind the leader of the country , which is the president , to ensure that Nigerians send a signal to those that want us to break-up”.
“The PDP will partner and work with the government in power in Nigeria to ensure that there is oneness of purpose in fighting the war against insurgency. For that, we are willing to give Mr. President a lot more time for him to get his acts together”.
“Aside saying he will crush Boko Haram in two months, he also made some promises on the issue of the economy which is getting worse by the day. He made some promises on the price of the dollar which is getting worse. He made some promises on the money he will give to unemployed Nigerians. He has not been able to start all of these”.
“We take it that there is an acceptance by Mr. President and the APC that they just made promises to get elected, not necessarily because they believe they can achieve those promises. But we hope that right now they have repented from deceiving Nigerians. And they will no longer deceive Nigerians with fake promises as they are still doing now” he said. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/07/60-days-buhari-yet-fulfill-electoral-promises-pdp/ |
