Brilliant composure from Flamini, keeping Toure busy all through without commiting himself. He is about to give Coquelin a run for his money. Setback for Sanchez |

Spy360: I have cleared it already.
The Emirates project began in 2003, then Arsenal had stopped signing big players - our only signing in 2004 when we own the league unbeaten was Jens Lehmann (a goalie).
By 2006 almost all of the invincible set were gone. Arsene could only sign academies, then Chelsea already had a 'sugar daddy' and Man Utd was the richest club in the world.
That was the period Wenger was accused of operating 'brood and sell'. Some of those academy guys like Fabregas and van Persie, also Hleb, Cole, were sold out.
If you were not a fan then please don't ask me. Ok..You win |

coded01: My take on this is... Pep should go to Arsenal to prove those doubters wrong!
Let's look at the stats here... Pep has only coached Barca n Bayern... 2 great clubs... 1 literally don't have a competitor while the other hardly goes without winning at least a league title in 2 seasons...
As much as I like Pep... He should go to clubs like Arsenal, even Man Utd don turn potato...
I am not saying Pep isn't fantantic as a coach but I noticed coaches like him n mourinho hardly produced anything special after 3 seasons with a club...
We need him to re-invent other ways to play with teams not the same way...like some people on Chelsea thread noted... There is much a style can work b4 being found out...
I know Pep has more in the tank only if he decides to re-establish himself... As for Mourinho... He re-invented the "pack the bus" and people says he is world's best...
He left Chelsea the defending champions - 16th after 15 games...
Like someone pointed out... He suffers from inferiority complex n chooses to insult or blame everyone for his woes but himself...
It's never Mourinho's fault but it's Pep's fault... Pep does not need to prove himself He is a legend already |

Spy360: Yes but then there was SAF's United. Fergie usually dealth with Arsene. I remember one season like that; I think 2002/03 when we were 15pts clear in March only to lose the title to United by 1pt after drawing the last game. Which is my point He was not ruthless enough |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by pickabeau1: 2:07pm On Dec 19, 2015 |
Spy360: You forget too early.
You forget that immediately after the team was formed, Wenger had to lose his biggest stars - Overmars, Henry, Vieira, Cole, then later Fabregas, Nasri and van Persie. All these without being able to sign top replacements.
Klopp suffered the same at Dortmund, which eventually led to his resignation. But AW stood by sacrificing his personal ambition for a club he loves.
If the same had happened to Jose, after 06/07; take away Drogba, Lampard, Terry, Cole, etc... The legend status would have been worse that it seems now. Nope you are the forgetful one Vieira left 2003 Henry 2006 You have not answered my question I asked you did wenger optimise the invincibles They won 2002 and 2004 How come United cleared all titles bar arsenal in 98 and Blackburn in 1994 Very simple question This is prior to Emirates project |

barackohandso: it's an opinion thats drier than the sahara, and it's getting stale for those that still use it. Pep was average, alves is average, pique is average, busquets is average, messi is nothing without xaviesta, now enrique is average.
Yet these people keep winning awards and trophies for fun; I'm sure a lot of a people will give their balls to be in these people's position if this is what being average entail
Dont worry, come January the average Luis Enrique will mount the average podium in Zurich to receive his average award Chop knuckle |

Spy360: I do not rate managers by the number of titles they have won, I rate them based on what achievements they make with the available players.
For example, I have great respect for Ferguson because he won titles with not so fantastic squads. Ferguson doesn't spend much (as LvG), but he gets the best out of his players.
I respect Klopp, Ranieri, Pochentino, Pardew etc.
I have little respect for Pelegrini, LvG (he was great but seems to have fallen), and of course Jose.
For someone like Pep, he plays good football with excellent tactics, his problem is that he still needs big players to execute his tactics. I rate him for his tactics.
For Enrique, take away Messi, Neymar and Suarez and Barca will not be better than Espanyol.
Jose is more pragmatic in approach, which helps him a lot. His defensive 4-2-3-1 formation, requires big stars to execute. Unfortunately it has become outdated, and his inability to upgrade tactically led to his downfall.
Arsene like Ferguson vary his tactics to suit his available players. He has transformed from an initial 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 to 4-1-3-1. The good thing about him is that, his teams play good attacking football, whether they are average or big stars. Also his ability to groom (just as Fergie) is a big plus. Once with a complete team, Wenger went unbeaten a whole season- the only one to have accomplished that.
So if you ask me, based on current performance, how do EPL coaches rate?
Top 4 1. Ranieri- Leicester 2. Flores- Watford 3. Pardew- C Palace 4. Wenger- Arsenal
Bottom 3 1. Martinez - Everton 2. Van Gaal - Man Utd 3. Mourinho - Chelsea Let's even accept this flawed theory of yours Achieved with players he has? Do us think arsene optimised the Invincibles 2 titles only... Do us think arsene optimised the 2008/9 set th led for so long... Ditto 2013/4... Tell me your answer |

Spy360: We can not be more worried than Chelsea presently.
Piers dislikes Wenger's transfer policy. The fact is, every Arsenal fan including myself dislikes Wenger's transfer policy.
But inspite of that, one thing has been remarkable, we are making steady progress. We haven't won the title for 10years but we are making progress. And with this progress, we have the believe that we will get there. That we are back to back FA cup champs is a huge sign.
And I personally feel Wenger should finish this process and be judged by it. Can he win us titles? I believe he can. He was a winner before.
He won 3 titles between '96 and '04, that's 9years in between. He did that despite the dominance of Ferguson's Man Utd. When you realise that Man Utd then was the biggest club in the world, you have to respect that.
I have always pointed out that if not for the financial restructuring, Wenger would still have won many more titles. He had to sacrifice he best players every year. No other manager with ambition will tolerate that, not more than Jose. If Wenger was more ruthless he will have won more than 3 titles before the rich kids came in |

Barcelona haven’t been all that solid at the back. They already conceded 4 goals in a match this season. Tactically, Arsenal have been improving. Kudos to Wenger on this.
