Bato93:This is the right time to do it , currently in Nigeria the demand for pork is higher than its supply. I can assure u after all this is gone there is going to be a shortage of lot of agricultural products. Most farmers are selling off there products currently and most haven't restocked as they normally do. This will lead to a huge shortage when all this is gone, I see profitable days ahead |
We dedicated at serving u better |

Invest into animal farming of ur choice, when this lockdown is over, prices of meats in the market will sky rocket. This lockdown will take at least 1- 2 months most animal farmers are not bringing in new animals or birds into there farm for the fear of the unknown. Most are scared of fall in demand. |
The Duroc pig was developed in the united states in the mid 1800s. The are the second most recorded breed of swine in the USA today. Pigs have a number of distinctive features that make it easy to recognize them among representatives of other breeds. Duroc pigs are reddish brown, largely framed, medium length, muscular growing, with partially dropping ears, broad ham & shoulder and strong dark hooves and legs, head relatively small with short neck. Boars weigh 300-360kg, 1.8-1.85m in length while sows weigh 240-300kg, 1.75-1.80m in length. Duroc are one of the fastest growing breeds of pigs when they are kept on a consistent nutritious diet. They are classified as medium size pigs although they tend to be at the high end of this category. Piglets feed on the right diet can reach 100kg in 170-180days. The Duroc breed is not aggressive, they are friendly, affectionate, and quite personable. Duroc are not very good at farrowing large litter of piglets. The sow can have 9-11 piglets per farrow, survival of piglets from sows of this breed is 93% which is not too surprising because sows of this breed have a well developed maternal instinct, have a calm character, take good care of piglets and feed them well. To get healthy piglets feed the sow properly while pregnant. Duroc are the best breeds for cross breeding of pigs, especially when you mate a male Duroc boar with other sow breeds (E.g large white and landrace) when cross with this breeds they farrow huge litter of healthy piglets. Piglets of this breeds are usually heavy from birth. Duroc pigs are excellent for free range farming, for farmers who want to rare pigs outdoor. They adapt perfectly to all weather both cold and hot weathers. The meat from Duroc pig is typically dark red in color, maintains moisture well and has good fat marbling throughout. It's one of the best taste of pork among other breeds. Note: Despite the wide distribution of this breed, pure breeds are difficult to acquire. To purchase this breed its better to turn to a specialize breeding farm where you can be guarantee pure breeds. When going to purchase this breed pls do make sure u have well knowledge of this breed or you go along with one who does. |
Thank you all to all those whom have chosen to farm with pigbarn and those referring other intended contract farmers to pigbarn. The response has been great and wonderful. |

Osinanwatabulu1:For the breeds to start with I will advice u go with the landrace or largewhite 100% pure breeds, cos the farrow more. This will help u grow faster. I will suggest you start with 7 sows 2 boars. On your presence on you farm, I will suggest u get capable hands whom have love for animals to work on your farm. On an average for feeding I will suggest u feed pigs of about 4 months and above 2kg of feed a day, sows breast feeding 2.5-3kg of feed daily. A pure breed of large white or landrace is marketable at 5 months and above weighing 80kg and above if feed appropriately. For medication, if you practice basic biosecurity guide lines on your farm you won't be needing much medication on ur farm except when given iron injection to new born piglet, multivitamins, anti biotics and deworming injections all this won't cost up to 20k a year |
zeestone99:Feeding 50 pigs to market weight with 300k is attainable by using soyabeans, dried cassava and rice bran. |
Offorcs:So sorry for the late reply. My advice will be first get a structure where ur pigs will be kept. It will be nice if you start small and grow with the right numbers of pigs u can afford to feed. Raising 10 sows will require feeds of about 8500kg a year , feeding each 2kg a day minimum. Yes you can get them on nairaland depending on ur location. Pig farming is lucrative if you farm the right breeds of pigs. |
amadasunfarm:Sorry for the late reply. On roofing. Of your pig pen and pig house in Benin city , it depends on the cost of labour and materials in ur location also the style of roofing u intend to go with. At my location a budget of 600-800k will do this including workmanship |
wolffire:So sorry for the late reply here, been so busy trying to stock feed for the pigs because of the lockdown. On local breeds of weaners, attaining market weight of 70-80kg it could take almost 9 months and above. Local breeds are very slow in gaining weight cos of the low feed conversation rate in them. The only way to attain market weight faster with local breeds is by castration of the male piglets but even at this the pork quality is usually low cos of the excess fat in them. A crossbreed will do better in. Weight at 7 months depending on the breeds crossed and how pure they are. Note: Local breeds are a waste of time for commercial pig farming. |

Almost 50 % of the pigs that die on a farm die before they are 14 days old. Good management in the farrowing house, where the piglets are born and kept for the first 28 to 35 days of their lives, is therefore of the utmost importance. The farrowing pen must be designed in such a way that the sow cannot lie on top of the piglets. New-born piglets are very sensitive to cold, draughts, wet bedding and floors as well as sudden changes in temperature. Ensure therefore that everything possible is done to prevent piglets from being exposed to these conditions. A farrowing crate (if u can get one if not construct a warm box for piglets) for the sows and a creep area for the piglets should be provided to prevent or reduce deaths as a result of piglets being trampled by the sow or as a result of cold, draughts, etc. Make sure that all piglets suckle a teat as soon as possible after birth to take in colostrum. The first milk produced by the sow immediately after the piglets are born is known as colostrum. It plays an important role in the protection of the piglets against diseases during the first few weeks of their lives. If a sow has more piglets than the number of teats she has, the extra piglets can be placed with another sow with a smaller number of piglets. This can only be done if the piglets of the sows are born within a few days of each other. Sometimes a sow does not accept her own piglets, usually as a result of birth shock (often seen in sows having their first litter of piglets). If this happens the piglets can be taken away from the sow for a few hours. If she still refuses to accept them they should be placed with another sow if possible. Sows that do not accept their piglets or bite them must rather be slaughtered. If another sow is not available to rear the rejected piglets, they can be reared artificially. It does, however, take time and hard work, because the piglets do not always grow and perform well. Specific treatment of piglets: Umbilical cord Disinfect the umbilical cord after birth with an iodine solution or any other suitable disinfectant to prevent bacterial infection. Tusk clipping Piglets have very sharp temporary tusks (or teeth) at birth which must be clipped to prevent injuries to the teats of the sows during suckling. Use a tusk clipper or a nail cutter and do not clip the teeth too close to the gums. The very sharp temporary tusks (or teeth) of piglets should be clipped Iron injections The milk of the sow does not provide enough iron to piglets that are reared on concrete floors. Piglets must therefore be injected with iron when they are three to seven days old to prevent them from becoming anaemic which results in poor appetite and growth until they start eating meal. In order to handle the piglets as little as possible clip the tusks and give the iron injection at he same time, about three days after birth. Injectable iron preparations for piglets can be bought and injected into the neck or buttocks. Not necessary required for outdoor farming. Water and feed Clean, fresh water placed at the back of the pen where the piglets will learn to dung is very important. The sooner they start to drink water the better. Two to three weeks after birth they will start to nibble on feed placed away from the water near the creep area. Creep feed is expensive and they will not eat much before weaning, therefore only small quantities of feed must be given from two to three weeks of age. Increase the daily quantity gradually when they start eating to prevent wastage. Do this and you will have little or no case of mortality with your weaners. |

EMMAACHILE:Camborough breeds are very good farms breeds and farrow many piglets |
wengerman:You buy exotic breeds to breed and increase you sow capacity. Advantages The farrow large litter of piglets averaging 10-16 piglets The have less or no fat in there meat The have high food conversion rate, when feed 2.5 -3kg a day per pig it gains 1kg daily The have faster growth rate for fattening. When going for this breeds u don't buy to fatten immediately for profit. You buy to multiple, grow and have enough breeding sows so that each month possible you have 5 sow giving birth to new piglets. This breed enhance better production. I will advice you go for this breeds if you intend to farm commercially and not backyard farming |
wengerman:They to can be fatten to slaughter in 6months, weighing 100kg no local breed will give you this. Modern farming is all about farming right and smart. We plant genetic improved seedlings so do we rear genetic improved animals to maximize profit. The Nigeria pork industry is so underated , Nigerian still imports pork from South Africa at this time, because most pig farmers lack the proper knowledge of the pork market. Nigeria is meant to be the highest exporter of pork to the world given the abundance of varieties for protein and carbohydrate for the formulation of pig feeds. The pork industry is a huge one.

Holycity:Keep the questions coming that's the reason why am here: Pig farming is not a get rich over night business to be frank with you. If u want to fatten to slaughter I will advice u go for the local breed but if u intend to farm properly in a commercial way you go for the better breeds( landrace and large white) you can start with 10 sows 3 boars and grow fast. Exotic breeds are been sold per kg, this breeds can weigh up to 350kg, in my location we sell 1000 naira per kg ( live weight) and 1200 per kg for dead weight. |
Holycity:It depends on the type of breed. Local breed 8-15k Landrace&large white (100% pure) 50-60k Duruck 60-70k Depending on the farm you buying from and how pure the breeds are. |

Extraordinaire8:personally, I advice the size of pen depends on your size of land and your vision of growth. For formulation of feed, please contact me privately. |
shoskid:shoskid, on building your pig pen, I will advice you get your budget known and identify the type of pen you intend to construct if concrete or wooden because both differ in cost. For the breeds, i will advice you go for 100% pure largewhite and landrace growers, because weaners will cost you much more to feed to slaughter or mating stage. Note: Ensure you buy from the credible farms * very important* |
aisolae:sorry for the late reply, am actively involved at the farm. Nairaland is not an instant messenger so we might all experience this from both sides. Building a pig pen for 100 Pigs, it all depends on your budget and the materials you intend to use. we have concrete pens and wooden pens. concrete pens are more durable but expensive and requires 24 hrs water supply for bio-security, a septic tank to store all waste product to ensure minimal odour pollution. wooden pens are less expensive but not good for a scale of 100 pigs, pigs are so destructive, 100 growers will destroy a wooden pen in less than 6 months talk more of full grown pigs (finishers) this will require constant repairs that will amount to the budget of a concrete pen. The cost of building a pig pen depends on the type of pen you intend to build and your vision for it (breeding or slaughter). 50 sows (female pigs) for breeding can produce a minimal of 500-1500 piglets each year, this has to be taking to consideration. will contact you privately to know your specifications and type of facilities you intend to you e.g nipple drinkers, farrowing creates, feeders etc. |
Juliana7:Sorry for the delay everyone my sow farrowed, been attending to it. I will advice u leave the practice of flushing because if done wrongly it will increase embryo mortality. To prevent diarrhea for weaners, it starts from the moment piglets are born, you have to make sure your piglets are been breast feed heavily the first 3 days so they can take enough colostrum, colostrum is the first milk that comes out of the breast of a sow when it gives birth, it contains antibiotics piglets need to survive weaning stage. Make sure an iron injection is been injected to each piglet the 3rd day of its birth. Make sure ur pig pen is clean always and you have clean water for them. And if all you done all this and you still have case of diarrhea then its the feed. You have to reduce the quantity of feed and give more water. Note: Preferably feed weaner with yellow maize and soyabeans . |
whyom09:A weaner is a piglet that has stopped taking breast milk and separated at 4 weeks old - 2 month old A grower is pig of 2-4 months old |
Juliana7:A gilt comes at heat properly at 6months, normal I advice gilt should be crossed at 7month at the stage the reproductive system is well formed and strong enough to farrow large litter of piglets. A gilts ability to give birth to large number of piglets also depends on some factors like: Its good to buy gilts from farms that keep good records of there pigs, so as to know if the mother of the gilt you buying farrowed much piglets. If it does not farrow an average of 10 piglets each time it gives birth then you buying a bad gilt, it won't farrow much piglets. You should ensure you count the number of nipples on the gilt stomach you buying, it shouldn't be less than 14. The boar plays a very important role when it comes to mating of a gilt. Serve your gilt a boar that is not too heavy and not too temperamental, since that's going to be her first time. A boar that is too heavy and too temperamental won't be comfortable for the gilt and this may cause little penetration and low semen intake by the gilt reducing the chances of it having much piglets. Ensure you take the gilt to the pen of the boar, to avoid distraction for fight of dominance. The boar feels more comfortable when his been served and won't spend time trying to explore its new environment. Ensure the boar mating the gilt its not been exposed to the sun to avoid sperm weakness in the boar. The floor of the pig pen shouldn't be slippery to avoid the boar from sliding away when it climbs the gilt. Signs: When a gilt or a sow comes on heat the vulva of the gilts swells out, it becomes pink red in colour for 2-7 days maximum within this days I advice the boar and gilt be left alone to sleep in same pen for 7 days or until she goes off heat. There is also a heat stand check done on gilts by one standing behind the gilt and pressing his too hands on the gilts waist, if she is on heat she will stand still but if she's not she will walk away. Note. A gilt comes back on heat 21 days after counting from the last day of its last heat. |
zeestone99:Minimal Budget. |
Sunday66:Your average budget for a 100% pure breed largewhite or land race should be btw 45-55000 depending on the farm you buying from , durocs cost higher |
