Dozens killed in Boko Haram raids on NE Nigeria villages Last Updated: Tuesday, July 14, 2015 - 19:23 Kano: Boko Haram gunmen killed dozens of people in four villages in northeast Nigeria, slitting some residents' throats "Boko Haram gunmen came into our villages at night, killing 43 people," said Sheriff Kulo, from Kilwa village near Monguno, who escaped to the Borno state capital, Maiduguri. There was no corroboration of his death toll but the state police commissioner confirmed the raids, which happened late last Friday. Details have only just emerged because of poor to non-existent phone networks in the remote area. Boko Haram has mounted almost daily raids, bombings and suicide attacks in northeast Nigeria since May 29, when Muhammadu Buhari became president vowing to crush the six-year Islamist uprising. Yesterday, he sacked his entire military high command, who were appointed by his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan, in the latest sign he is making a fresh start in the counter-insurgency. Kulo said the gunmen seized food and cattle then set villagers homes on fire. "In Kilwa alone, they killed seven people, including the village head and left one seriously injured with a fracture on his leg," he added. "They then proceeded to Gwollam, Misala and Magaram, where they did the same thing. In all they killed 43. "They opened fire on residents and in some cases they used knives to slaughter their victims." Many women and children fled to Monguno but were living in the open air with little food, he said. Others made it to Maiduguri to raise the alarm. The Borno state police commissioner, Aderemi Padokun, confirmed the attacks. "From what we heard, the gunmen raided these villages. They shot dead their victims and in some cases slit their throats. They also carted away foodstuffs and livestock," he said. "We don't have details of the actual number of people killed in the attack but I can confirm it happened." Boko Haram mounted a similar raid on a nearby village in the Monguno area on July 1, killing 48. The latest deaths take the number of people killed since Buhari's presidency began to more than 625, according to an AFP count |
Twin blasts hit market in NE Nigeria, 'nearly 50 killed' Last Updated: Friday, July 17, 2015 - 07:20 Kano: At least 49 people were killed and dozens injured when twin blasts struck a market in the northeast Nigerian city of Gombe, rescue workers said. The first explosion took place outside a packed footwear shop around 0950 IST yesterday, followed by a second explosion just minutes later, said Badamasi Amin, a local trader who counted at least three bodies. He said the area at the time was crowded with customers doing some last-minute shopping on the eve of the Eid festival marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. "I was about 70 metres (yards) from the scene" when the first blast hit, Amin told AFP. "I and many other people rushed to assist the victims. While we were trying to attend to the wounded, another blast happened outside a china shop just opposite the footwear shop," he said, adding that he himself was "drenched in blood" from moving dead bodies. Ali Nasiru, another trader, said he saw "people lying lifeless on the ground". "Traders and shoppers helped in evacuating the victims to the hospital," he said. "In all, we have 49 dead and 71 injured," a top rescue official told AFP, asking not to be named. He warned that the toll could climb further as some of the wounded "are in a critical condition". "The victims include many women and children," he said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts but a market, bus station and stadium in the city of Gombe, the capital of Gombe state, have all in recent months been targeted by bomb and suicide attacks. In February, Boko Haram Islamists claimed responsibility for an attack on Gombe during which hundreds of insurgents, armed with heavy weapons, invaded the city for a few hours..... |

Three girls blow themselves up in deadly Nigeria attacks Last Updated: Saturday, July 18, 2015 - 08:06 Kano: Three girls staged suicide bombings in the Nigerian city of Damaturu on Friday, killing at least 13 people as residents prepared for the Eid festival at the end of Ramadan, police said. The attacks, in a northeastern area hard hit by the Boko Haram insurgency, came just days before Nigeria`s new President Muhammadu Buhari travels to Washington for talks with US counterpart Barack Obama. The bombings came on the day the country`s new army chief was due to visit the city to meet soldiers battling Boko Haram. Buhari is expected to use Monday`s meeting with Obama to push for US help to tackle the jihadist violence, which has surged since he took office in May, claiming more than 700 lives. Boko Haram have increasingly used young women and girls as human bombs over the past year as part of campaign of terror, which has left 15,000 people dead and 1.5 million homeless since 2009. In a sign of how the violence is spreading across the region, a soldier and 19 Boko Haram members were killed in a shootout following an insurgent raid on an army post at Lake Chad, a security source in neighbouring Chad said. Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno said he would not back down against the Islamists, vowing: "Boko Haram will disappear one day." In the Nigerian attacks, residents said twin explosions near a prayer ground in Damaturu killed two people, before a third blast moments later near a mosque that left another 11 dead. Markus Danladi, Yobe state police commissioner, confirmed 13 people were killed. "The attacks were carried out by three underage girls. Fifteen people were also injured in the attacks." Army spokesman Sani Usman however gave a toll of nine dead and 18 wounded, adding: "Troops and security agencies responded immediately to the incidents. The situation is currently under control."The attacks followed a double bombing at a market in the town of Gombe, south of Damaturu, on Thursday that killed at least 49 people who were shopping for the Eid celebrations. "There were two blasts near the Eid prayer ground," said Ahmad Adamu, a security volunteer in Damaturu said of Friday`s attacks. "The first blast went off around 7:15 am (0615 GMT) while security volunteers... were waiting for the worshippers so they could assist in crowd control," he said. "While we were attending to the victims, we heard another blast about 500 metres (yards) away." This year`s Ramadan has been particularly deadly in Nigeria, with suicide bombers hitting mosques and worshippers gunned down as they prayed. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon through his spokesman condemned the attacks at "a sacred time for families and communities to come together," saying they "constitute an assault on the beliefs of all people". Damaturu is the capital of Yobe, one of three northeastern states worst affected by the insurgency. Nigeria`s new army chief Major General Tukur Buratai was due to visit Damaturu on Friday to celebrate Eid with soldiers battling Boko Haram, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group that has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria. Buhari, a former military head of state, has made the fight against the Nigerian jihadist group one of the main planks of his administration. He has sacked the military top brass he inherited from his predecessor and Buratai was named to the post only this week. Topping the agenda of Buhari`s talks with Obama "will be measures to strengthen and intensify bilateral and international cooperation against terrorism in Nigeria and west Africa", according to the Nigerian presidency. Relations suffered in the latter part of former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan`s rule, with Abuja considering US aid to fight Boko Haram insufficient. The west African nation decided to halt a US training programme for an army battalion which would have developed into a unit to take on the militants. Boko Haram has taken advantage of the transitional period between Buhari`s installation and the deployment of a regional force of 8,700 troops, scheduled for late July, to launch deadly attacks on an almost daily basis.[/Kano: Three girls staged suicide bombings in the Nigerian city of Damaturu on Friday, killing at least 13 people as residents prepared for the Eid festival at the end of Ramadan, police said. Female suicide bombers kill 15 in Kano, NE Nigeria: Police Last Updated: Thursday, November 19, 2015 - 00:13 Kano: Two young female suicide bombers, including one thought to be aged just 11, killed 15 people at a busy mobile phone market in Kano, northeast Nigeria, police said on Wednesday. "A minibus carrying some women came to the Farm Centre GSM market and dropped off one girl aged about 11 and another aged about 18, both wore the hijab," said Kano police spokesman Musa Magaji Majia. "One went inside the market, the other stayed outside then they exploded, killing themselves and others nearby," he told AFP. "The victims were taken to hospital and it was later confirmed that 15 people died, not including the suicide bombers." Five of those who died were among 58 people taken for treatment. Most of the remaining 53 have been treated and released, said Majia. Boko Haram has previously used young girls as human bombs in its six-year insurgency to create a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria. In July 2014, Kano was hit four times in the space of a week by a spate of young female suicide bombers wearing the head and shoulder covering used by many Muslim women in the region. Police in Kano, northern Nigeria's commercial hub, have blocked entries and exits to the city as part of a manhunt for the VW Sharan minibus that dropped the two girls at the market, Majia said. It was said to have four other women in it. |
Boko Haram attacks force 12,000 pupils from Niger schools: UN Niamey: Some 150 schools with more than 12,000 pupils have been forced to close due to the deadly attacks in Niger's southeast Diffa region, the United Nations said on Friday. Most of the affected schools are near Lake Chad and on the banks of the Yobe River, which marks the border between Niger and Nigeria, the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement. The agency said 151 schools with a total of 12,631 pupils had closed due to "insecurity that has sparked the absence of teachers and panic in the population". "The pupils are now at camps for displaced people," the agency said, adding that there are no schools at the camps. Numerous local schools closed following Boko Haram's first attacks in the country in February, with more following suit following a recent surge in assaults by the Nigeria-based Islamist group, a local official told AFP. Thirteen people were killed and three injured in an attack on the Diffa village of Ala last week, local officials said. Niger's government has been working with the UN and other partners on a plan intended to allow children to go back to their studies in safer locations by the end of November. Boko Haram has carried out a string of deadly attacks in Diffa, one of its strongholds on the Niger-Nigeria border, as the army struggles to contain the group's regional advances. Cameroon, Chad and Niger have formed a military alliance with Nigeria and Benin to battle the extremists, who this year declared allegiance to the Islamic State. Boko Haram has been hit hard by the multinational offensive, losing territory, but it has launched attacks and bombings in response. |
What are they doing with a dead man's picture? Muslims problem is bigger than them..I hope they get delivered from this deadly religion. |
Suicide bomber kills 21 at Shi`ite Muslim procession in Nigeria Last Updated: Friday, November 27, 2015 - 22:19 Dakasoye: At least 21 people were killed on Friday when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the crowds at a Shia Muslim procession near the north Nigerian city of Kano, in the latest violence to hit the troubled region. The attack happened in the village of Dakasoye, some 20 kilometers (13 miles) south of the city, during a march by followers of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. "Our procession came under a suicide attack," Muhammad Turi, who was leading thousands of people from Kano to Zaria, in the neighbouring state of Kaduna, told reporters at the scene. "We lost 21 people and several others have been injured. We are not surprised that we`ve been attacked because this is the situation all over the country. "This will not deter us from our religious observance. Even if all of us were bombed the last person will carry on with this duty." An AFP reporter in Dakasoye said the road was splattered with bloodstains but the followers had continued their march. Most were wearing black and carrying flags or portraits of the Prophet Mohammed`s grandson, Hussein, and were flanked by security guards. One organiser, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP the bomber ran into the crowd before he could be spotted and detonated his explosives. "He was dressed in black like everyone else. His accomplice was initially arrested and confessed they were sent by Boko Haram," he added. "They were part of the young men abducted by Boko Haram in (the Borno state town of) Mubi last year and taken to Sambisa Forest where they were given some military training. "They were sent to Kano 11 days ago and kept in a house specifically for this attack." The bomber detonated his explosives after realising his accomplice had been arrested, the organiser added.Boko Haram, the radical Sunni jihadists who want to create a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria, has previously been blamed for attacks on Shia Muslims in the region.
