Politics / An Exclusive Interview With Pastor Tunde Bakare by playnaija(m): 10:25am On Jan 19, 2013
Bakare - Jonathan Belittled Himself By Kneeling-down For Adeboye

Pastor Tunde Bakare, Senior Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly and former running mate of Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the last presidential election, speaks with KUNLE ADEYEMI and ADEOLA BALOGUN on some burning national issues

One year after the fuel subsidy protests, when you look back, would you say the protests achieved their goals?

When there are clear goals and objectives for any movement or protest, then you have the opportunity of judging whether those goals are attained or accomplished. We didn’t just rush out; if you recall, the increase in petrol pump price took place on January 1, 2012. Like a sadist, the President gave us a cause to be sorrowful on the first day of the year; even those who didn’t even have vehicles of their own and had to pay through their noses to move from one place to the other. The Save Nigeria Group sat down to analyse the situation and joined the protest in Ojota with its allies. There were pockets of protests here and there; there was a general strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress; then we sat down and set the objectives clearly: that the increase in pump price was not our problem but corruption. We said the time had come for us to educate and enlighten our citizens and unblock their minds as to the root cause of the continuous increase in petrol pump price all the time and the affliction and oppression inflicted on the people of this country. That’s why we came out with the watchword, “Kill Corruption and not Nigerians.” And I leave it to you as journalists to see whether or not we accomplished our objectives because immediately we began to hammer that, probe after probe, live on television came out. There is no Nigerian anywhere in this country and in the Diaspora that does not know that filthiness is in our garments. Corruption is the bane and we have unmasked the masquerade.

It was alleged that you led the protest because your party lost the election to the President’s party.

You cannot tell clueless people not to reason wrongly. Did all the people who participated in that protest run for an election? All the musicians that came there, all the artistes that came there without taking a penny from us, did they run for any election? And even if you are going to judge me that it was because you rigged an election that you said we lost, that led to the protest, did I ask you to increase the pump price? And if you are to judge me, judge me by my overall character; did I stand for you when you were being oppressed, Mr. President? Was I a politician when we led and took to the streets in Abuja and Lagos where we stood against every form of oppression and injustice because injustice to one is injustice to all? Were we sponsored by politicians when we took to the streets in January, 2010 after the prolonged illness of (Umaru) Yar’Adua? You can’t help people who don’t engage their brain to think; they are entitled to their opinion. But let me tell you the truth, there was no political motivation of any kind to that protest. We rose to protest an injustice being meted out to a people deserving not only respect, but those whose welfare should be the primary concern of a good government. Everybody is aware now that somebody is watching somebody. With all the exposure of corruption in high places, everyone is careful and they are so scared. In spite of threatening to increase the price of PMS, they couldn’t, although they are doing it illegally by allowing people to sell at any price they like. But it is still illegal and that is why I dared them three days ago to come out and increase the petrol price without cushioning the effect and providing alternative for the people. They will know that it is for the dog to wag the tail, not the tail to wag the dog; people will tell them enough is enough.

Don’t you think that 2015 is still far away for campaigning to have started?

They have signalled the campaign by going to kneel down before Pastor Adeboye (General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God). See, I am not saying that pastors should not pray for presidents, that man was representing an office; a whole nation crumbling before men of God because of political advantage they think they can get. And if the prayer will bail him out, let us wait and see. The truth is who is preparing for 2015, which faction of the PDP? Is it the (Olusegun) Obasanjo faction? Or IBB faction? Or Jonathan faction? The governors’ faction? Because PDP is a house divided against itself; it’s a chicken that has begun to eat its own intestines. By going to kneel down in the open before the pastor, the man (Jonathan) did not even recognise the dignity of his office. If it were a private thing, it is okay for you to crawl or kneel but it is a whole nation. That office has been diminished by a man who does not know the worth of it and does not deserve to stay there for one more day.

What then should be the role of religious leaders like you in the affairs of the nation?

I am not a religious leader. I don’t believe in religion; religion is deadly. Jesus Christ did not start a religion here. He began a relationship with God. Let’s separate the two. Religious leaders don’t think any more, they lose their brain. Paul said, I speak the words of truth and reason. What is the impact of the church in this country other than to pray for men who have stolen the treasury and wealth of the nation and coming back to give us different kinds of gifts; giving us jets and all kinds of things that will silence us so that we cannot speak the truth to power? I know the church that Jesus Christ is building will continue to wax stronger but this synagogue of Satan will fold up soon. I hate religion with passion.

How will you assess the Jonathan administration so far?

Under Jonathan’s leadership, Nigeria as a whole has become a titanic ship on sail to hit the iceberg and sink. Right-thinking people must rise to rescue the helm of that ship from his (Jonathan’s) hand before he wrecks the entire nation. We have promoted men who have no mental capacity to do what we ask them to do. At a meeting we had on Monday to mark the anniversary of the protest, the Chairman of Punch Editorial Board brought this to my consciousness by describing leadership of Nigeria as inept. He said we have put men who have been promoted beyond their mental capacity in position. That is our problem.

Many people believe that the PDP has become an albatross to Nigerians and that is why there is a clamour for an alliance among the opposition parties in order to wrest power from the ruling party. What do you think has been hampering such alliance?

You have put me on the spot and I will only be truthful. In order to steer the ship of Nigeria aright, there must be a handshake across the Niger; between the North and the South. But it must be of like minds; the best of the North and the best of the South. How that will take place is a function of many factors. An alliance is not the way forward. In a presidential system of government, there is no opposition; it’s winner takes all. If the party in power has a majority in the National Assembly, they don’t need anybody. That is the weakness of the presidential system of government. Each time they talk of opposition, I think we are so much inundated by our past experience with the parliamentary system where the prime minister can be removed from the parliament and nothing will happen because the system allows it. But the presidential system does not brook any opposition, except only when they don’t have the majority. I think the way forward is a merger of all the so-called opposition parties especially the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change. But I realised recently when the ACN said PDP is a party of rogues and thieves and criminals, the PDP replied that there are more criminals in the ACN than the PDP and there was no response thereafter. I read all that in the newspapers. If there is going to be a merger, between who and who-between rogues and criminals? Can light and darkness co-exist? Let’s pray that men and women of goodwill will rise and do the needful. However, having said all that, I am of the firm belief and conviction that there will be no election in 2015. I am of the firm belief that this house of cards will collapse before 2015. As it is now, what we have does not have what it takes to drag Nigeria along; and anything can happen anytime from now. And I pray that it would be what would be for the benefit of the entire nation. Each time we have spoken that way, some have thought we are calling for the military to take over. What did the military do for the nation before? Don’t let me be misunderstood, except we have a kind of Jehu revolution, where the worshippers of bell and the worshippers of the altar of greed are all dealt with as it happened in Ghana. Then, there may be some hope there. Our people may revolt, which can happen so unexpectedly. Remember what happened when the Shah of Iran ran away from that country and the Arab Spring? It would be worse here because they have pushed people beyond limit. Look at the level of insecurity, daylight robbery; you are coming out of the church and they are pointing a gun at you. North is not safe, there is Boko Haram; South-East is not safe, there is kidnapping; South is not safe, there is pipeline vandalism. And fire is now ravaging everywhere. People have been pushed beyond limit and there may be a people’s revolt. Beyond this, there is God almighty, who may say the cries of the people have come up to Him, enough is enough.

When you as a man of God says there will be no election in 2015, is that as a result of a vision or what?

Leave that to me but by the time this nation is 100 years old in 2014, God will answer the prayer of the people of God and there will be a new beginning. The madness that is going on everywhere now is that God is hardening the heart of Pharaoh.

The President warned a few days ago against statements that could destabilise the country such as this.

Is the nation not destabilised already? What have we said that will destabilise the country? Let’s call a spade a spade and not an agricultural implement.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also warned against a revolution recently going by the way things are going…

He said the truth but he would be the first victim that it would consume because he caused the problem; by forcing the weak and the sick on the nation. A few days ago, Adamu Ciroma came out to say that Obasanjo knew that the late Umaru Yar’Adua was sick. Just wait, the result is about to happen. He did that as a way of revenging on Nigeria for the collapse of his third term agenda but Obasanjo will be the first victim of the revolution. I presented a lecture on Sunday that Obasanjo had the greatest opportunity to put Nigeria in proper shape and to leave a legacy for generations unborn. But he chose not to do that. I had the privilege of launching a book in honour of a venerable man, Chief Akin Olugbade, an Owu, to mark his centenary birthday if he were alive. I said Owu as a kingdom had produced angels in human flesh like the late Akin Olugbade, whose generosity and philanthropy benefitted a person like me. I went there to say that this is a return on investment and I gave the little that I had. If Obasanjo dares, let both of us walk through Itoku Market in Abeokuta even as an Owu man without any aide, or the streets of Sokoto among the almajiris. That is why I told them that Owu kingdom has produced angels and demons such as Obasanjo, who incidentally is called Ebora Owu. Ebora means demon and demons are to be exorcised. Our job is to cast out demons of Owu and that we would do by God’s grace.

How do you see the rift between Obasanjo and Jonathan; probably Obasanjo has realised his mistakes and now thinks it is better to fight on the side of the people?

Obasanjo does not realise anything. I think Jonathan has surpassed him in misgovernance and he is frightened. It is only a thief that knows the footprint of another thief on a rock. How did he come by his big house? How much was Obasanjo worth when he left the prison, how much is he worth now? How did he come about his big investments? How much was he paid as President of Nigeria. Let him explain. What we have is a government of crooks by crooks.

In the last election, you tried politics. What should we expect now?

I didn’t try politics. I was invited to assist a person whom I thought was a honest man and would be surrounded by good people and then we would fight corruption. That was the only reason. I was a running mate; I wasn’t a member of any party. I was invited but I am back in my element to keep doing what I am doing. That ended there; if the opportunity comes to serve my country in any capacity, I will but I am not forming any party.

What did you see in Maj.-Gen.Mohammadu Buhari before you joined him?

His integrity and his anti-corruption stance stood him out. He is the only head of state alive who made the public statement that in his entire public service career, as a governor, as a commissioner (now minister), as a commandant of different army formations and as a head of state, he never touched one penny in the public treasury; that he can account for everything God has given him. His mother’s house was built through a loan both in Daura and in Kaduna. The one in Lagos, he had to sell to fund the one he took a loan to build in Abuja because he didn’t know how to steal. He is very forthright and honest; that’s all I saw and if we can surround such a man with people who have the capability and the capacity to run the state and the treasury is safe and there is no more stealing and Nigeria is no longer haemorrhaging, we can salvage it. That was why we assembled a change team that we thought would be allowed but they rigged the election.

Some people believe that if somebody like you becomes the President of Nigeria, there will be more evidence of despotic actions in governance. How would you react to this?

The only way to judge that is to come to a church I have headed for more than 20 years and see whether there is any evidence of despotism. Then you come to my house and see my wife and children to see if there is an evidence of despotic actions. I am not a despot and in fact, how can you be a despot in a democratic setting? Don’t forget I am a trained lawyer; I would not violate the rule of law. No true leader should be a despot.

Apart from corruption, security is another challenge facing the country and the Presidency has had to change the head of police several times because of this. So far, how would you assess the present IG, Muhammed Abubakar?

There is nobody you put there who can accomplish anything about insecurity because the fish starts smelling from the head. If you say corruption is not the problem, what leads to insecurity if not corruption? The IG can give orders but the men at the toll gates and roadblocks are there to perpetuate corruption. Corruption and violence are Siamese twins and in Genesis, God said He was grieved in His heart that He created man, that the earth was corrupt and there was violence everywhere. You can’t find corruption and not see violence. I do not approve of what Boko Haram is doing but if you grant amnesty to those who were vandalising the pipelines because of fighting for what they claimed was legitimately theirs, and Boko Haram are saying their governors are not taking care of them, who are you to judge them? Why have they not been able to fix the problem?

But it has always been argued that Boko Haram is faceless and so it would be difficult to engage its elements

Boko Haram faceless and yet Obasanjo met with them? I don’t know them but the President of Nigeria said Boko Haram members were in his cabinet. Who are those he alleged were in his cabinet, are they ghosts? What led to the removal of the late Gen. (Andrew) Azazi as National Security Adviser? They are totally insincere. There is PDP Boko Haram. Let them not fool you. They arrested some people in Jos and elsewhere, why have they not been able to prosecute anyone with all the arrests? Do you think it is the Boko Haram that started in the Borno area that are the ones planting sophisticated bombs everywhere now? Please let’s think; there is security Boko Haram, there is political Boko Haram and there is criminal Boko Haram.

Recently the government came out to say electricity has improved a bit but the way you are talking, it’s like it has not done anything.

If a man told me a lie yesterday and I believed him but it turned out to be false; and he told me a lie a day before, how long am I to continue to believe him? Nigerians have been told of improved electricity in recent months but how many parts of the country have you travelled to? They are putting electricity where you make noise so that you don’t bother them. I still burn diesel in my house everyday up till now and my budget for diesel both in the church and in my house has increased with all the noise they are making. And by the way, how much have they invested in electricity generation and how much electricity have they produced?

But the government has been trying to put electricity generation into private hands for improvement.

I have had the opportunity of living in both Britain and America for six years each and I never met the electricity officials. All I had to do was to pay my bills; that was all. All the privatisation noise they are making is fraught with deep-seated corruption. They sell everything to themselves. They have been mentioning privatisation when I was still in my mother’s womb. Once upon a time, there was ECN and there was stable electricity. They are insincere and they sell everything to themselves.

How do you see the politicking involved in the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project, where a lot of lives have been lost? Soon after the contract was withdrawn from Dr.Wale Babalakin, he was arrested for alleged money laundering.

Evil is self-destruct. That’s all I see there. If Babalakin is being tried for something, the question is, is it true? If it is false, then the trial will fall on its face. I have told you that it is only the thief that knows how to trace the footsteps of another on a rock. They know what they are doing. If you remain in our camp and you don’t attack us, you remain our friend. Babalakin used to be the solicitor for Obasanjo, have they fallen out? Was there anything between Babalakin and the minister and is there a fall out? But the truth is, can they come and revoke a contract that I have not seen or can they come and charge me for money laundering? My accounts are in the open and if you access them, you will see that it has been regular. And every business I have done, I have gone to the banks for legitimate loans and I have paid back those loans. If you have done no evil, you need not fear no evil. So, if Babalakin has done no evil, no evil will befall him. But if he has done it, then let him find a way of reaching out to them before they wreck him completely because they are vicious. What is going on on that road is the failure of the entire nation. Leadership has failed Nigerians. That is the main road that connects the South and the North and any serious government should have done something about it. I am aware that the South-West governors showed an interest and met with the President but I don’t know why they were not allowed to do it. There is more to it than we ordinary citizens know.

As kinsmen, people would expect a kind of rapport between you and Obasanjo but you are one of his critics. Is there something personal?

Apart from answering questions about him in interviews, I don’t think or talk about him at all because he does not even occur in my thinking. If Obasanjo is my kinsman, does it mean that if he does evil, I should keep quiet? I have no personal hatred for him. Let me tell you something, I don’t know whether he knows but I am saying the truth and it can be verified. When he was in prison, one of the pastors that went to minister to him, I sent him. He was a member of our network. When he was in prison, two of his children were brought here because their school fees could not be paid by one of his wives, I paid the fees. I have nothing against him.

On a personal note, do you at times regret leaving the pulpit and venturing into politics?

Look at me, as the Lord lives and when the opportunity presents itself, because of my interest in an orderly society, I will do it again. I have no regret. When good men leave politics alone, evil men will continue to traumatise the nation. And by the way, I never left the pulpit, in all the months of electioneering, I was absent in church only one Sunday because it caught up with me in Borno and I couldn’t get back. Gen. Buhari knew that by Friday night, or latest Saturday morning, I must be back in Lagos to feed the flock.

Supposing the President chooses to come and fellowship at your church, what would you do?

Let him try it. Jonathan dares not and if he does, he will sit at the back.

What is the Nigeria of your dream?

The Nigeria that works in my lifetime, that is the Nigeria of my dream. My ears have heard about this great nation, my eyes will see it in my own lifetime. I am not an ambitious person and that is why I can come back here.

Politics / Thousands Struggle To View Islamic Inscription Which Appeared Mysteriously by playnaija(m): 5:31pm On Dec 30, 2012

Pandemonium at the Ebute Ero end of Lagos Island as thousands are struggling to view an Islamic inscription which supposedly appeared mysteriously overnight.

The insciption is written in Arabic. It was observed that thousands of people have gathered to either view or bow to the inscription. About five people fainted due to the rowdiness of the place while many hooldums have seized the opportunity to steal and commit petty crimes.
One of the people at the scene, Abdulsalam Yusuf, said the people have vowed not to leave unless the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, or the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, addressed them.
The inscription supposedly appeared suddenly on a patch of dry cement on the ground.
The Ebute Ero Police Division, which is adjacent to the place was helpless as there were fears that any attempt to disperse the mammoth crowd could cause disaster.

All workers and passengers have been evacuated while fire fighters work to extinguish the fire. An electrical fire was on Thursday morning reported at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

An eyewitness said the fire emanated from some cables, which apparently melted under heat, as some welders were working at the extension of ‘D’ Wing of the international airport.

Airport officials swiftly cut off power supply to the arrival and departure halls, in order to forestall any untoward development and isolated the scene of the spark.

Billows of smoke were observed rising to the sky from behind the arrival hall.

Politics / Electricity Workers Reject Privatisation by playnaija(m): 3:59pm On Nov 09, 2012
The National Union of Electricity Employees and Senior Staff Association of Electricity Workers have described the ongoing privatization of the power sector “as anti-people and a drawback for the economy”.

Acting President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajearo while addressing electricity workers during the national sensitisation tour of the North East Zone in Jos, observed that the country is not ripe for privatization in the sector.

The labour leader argued that privatisation is a post industrialisation process and not developmental as the nation has the resources to develop and nurture the power sector rather than leaving it in private hands to manipulate the people.

The north East Vice President of the union, Hajia Lami Mohammed urged workers to remain calm as the union is making efforts to ensure that all entitlements of the workers are paid before disengagement.

As the power reform exercise continues to generate different views, the major demand of the electricity workers is that all entitlements of the workers must be paid by the government before the privatisation exercise could be discussed.

Politics / Jonathan Sets Deadline For Complete Rehabilitation Of All Refineries by playnaija(m): 3:52pm On Nov 09, 2012
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, who disclosed this to state House correspondents on Thursday, announced that “the President has set March, 2013 deadline for the completion of the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) and complete rehabilitation of three refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri.”

Dr Abati made this known after a meeting in the president’s office which had in attendance, the Minister of Petroleum Resources with her team including the Group Managing Director of the NNPC and other directors in the oil and gas sector, who made series of presentations.

The crux of the meeting according to the president’s aide was the state of the nation’s refineries and what steps can be taken to improve the capacities of these refineries to make them perform at their optimum.

He also revealed that the President is set for the full implementation of the task force reports, beginning with the committee on the nation’s refineries in order to boost domestic refining of crude oil products to create jobs.

It would be recalled that the committee on the Refineries which was headed by Dr Kalu Idika Kalu blamed the epileptic performance of the country’s refineries on lack of proper maintenance and funding.

Stop importation of fuel

Speaking on the reports Dr Abati said “the president has not only commended the committee on refineries, but he also made it clear that as part of the determination of his administration to make sure that Nigeria stops the importation of fuel and he subsequently directed the Minister of Petroleum Resources to take that report and look into it and then come up with action plan as to what can be done going forward.”

Dr Abati also revealed that the President demanded for a technical report to be prepared on how to get the refineries working.

Giving a break down on the present capacities of the three refineries, the President’s spokesman stated that “what the Kaduna refinery is able to produce per day now is about 110,000 barrels per day, the Port Harcourt refineries 210,000 barrel per day and the Warri refineries 125,000 barrel per day.”

Outlining the three points the president wants tackled, the presidential spokesman said the president told the team that the interest of this government is to ensure that crude oil is refined domestically and the administration’s determination to put an end to the importation of finished petroleum products because “you can refine domestically and at the same time still import because if you don’t have enough you will bridge it.”

He also expressed the president’s desire to create jobs locally in the sector because “the president’s conviction is that if you keep importing refined products, you are creating jobs for other people in other economies.

The meeting agreed to take care of the turnaround maintenance of the refineries in the immediate term and the target is that this short term intervention will be completed by March, 2013 and if that is done, that will raise the capacities of these refineries taken together to sixty five per cent.”

“But the determination is even to go beyond that to also engage in the rehabilitation of the refineries. There is a turnaround maintenance and also plan for rehabilitation” he declared.

Implementing committees report

According to Dr Abati, contrary to believe by some people that government sets up committees then refuse to implement the recommendations of such committees, “President Jonathan has already commenced the implementation of the recommendations of the committees he set up” he stated.

“The whole point of this is to make it clear that action is already being taken on the reports of the committees. The first meeting that was held today is on this issue of refineries. What I have given you is the outline. Another meeting will be fixed where further presentations would be made on the technical details on how these objectives would be achieved.”

“I think this clarification is important because since the presentation of these reports to Mr President, there has been an excessive focus on the politicisation of the Petroleum revenue task force reports whereas on that day, there were discussions relating to the refineries, there were discussions relating to the issues of governance system in the petroleum sector.”

“It is important to clarify that actually action is already being taken and for the benefit of those who think when committees submit reports, government sleeps on those reports, you can see clearly that this is not the case”

Politics / Onitsha Wood Market Destroyed By Fire by playnaija(m): 7:04pm On Nov 08, 2012
Chairman, Carpentry and Wood Design Market, Bridge-Head Markets, Onitsha, Mr. Obidigbo Okorie, has urged the Anambra State Government to investigate the fire that gutted a major part of the market on Thursday.

Okorie told the News Agency of Nigeria after the fire was put out by firefighters and members of the public that the artisans lost shops, wood and machinery worth more than N100 million.

NAN gathered that the fire started at about 4.30 a.m. and lasted till 11a.m.

The chairman said that 99 per cent of the shops were lost to the fire.

“I call on those affected to keep calm (as) we would follow the investigation of the incident to its logical conclusion.

“I would invite the state and local governments to come close and understand what is going on here and then know how we can be helped,” Okorie said.

Reacting, Chairman, Onitsha South Council Transition Committee, Mr. Ugochukwu Ezeani, who visited the scene, described the incident as “unfortunate.”

Mr. Arinze Nweke, a wood designer, said he lost two shops and two wood designing machines worth some N200,000.

NAN recalls that a similar incident happened in the market in January 2010 during which some 60 shops were affected.

Politics / Court Begins Arraignment Of Subsidy Fraudsters by playnaija(m): 3:42pm On Jul 26, 2012
Let us watch how justice is delivered for the sake of Nigerians

Mr Alao was arraigned along with his company Axenergy by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 7 count of fraud.
The EFCC alleged that the suspect obtained the sum of two billion, six hundred and forty million naira (N2, 640, 000,000.00) being payments received from the Petroleum Support Fund for the purported importation of 33.3million litres of Premium Motor Spirit.

Counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs proceeded with the arraignment after apologising to the court for the absence of the attorney general and Minister of justice, Mohammed Adoke Bello who failed to show up again after citing “pressing state matters” requiring his attention.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Tukur son of Bamanga Tukur the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, is still in court waiting his turn to be arraigned
When the matter came up before Justice Habeeb Abiru of Ikeja High Court yesterday, Mr Jacobs informed the court of the absence of the Attorney General of the Federation, who he said wanted to personally lead the prosecution team.
Counsel to one of the defendants, who was also absent told the court that his client has not been served with the court processes but only got wind of the case informally.
Updates to come shortly.

Religion / TB Joshua Prophesied Colorado Cinema Shooting by playnaija(m): 11:55am On Jul 21, 2012
What a shocking prophecy again by Prophet TB Joshua
“In the nation of America, they should pray,” the YouTube clip showed Pastor T.B. Joshua saying on Sunday 10th June 2012 during a church service. “I am seeing a man carry a gun in a gathering of people and begin to shoot. A lot of people will be killed before the man will be arrested… This is homeland security.” The prophecy was broadcast live on the ministry’s media outlet, Emmanuel TV.

During the first gun scene in the movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, Holmes, masked and dressed in black, threw a canister emitting smoke suspected to be tear gas, which partially obscured the audience's sight. He then brandished a rifle and opened fire on the crowd, picking his victims at random and only stopping to reload his weapon.

It was a scene "straight out of a horror film,"said Chris Ramos, who was inside the theatre. "He was just literally shooting everyone, like hunting season," Ramos said. "There were bullet [casings] just falling on my head. They were burning my forehead," Jennifer Seeger, one of the witnesses told reporters afterward. "Every few seconds it was just: Boom, boom, boom," she said.

This show for sure, this man of God has power.

Politics / Clash Between Fulani Herdmen And Community Leaves One Death by playnaija(m): 6:04pm On Jul 18, 2012
THE conflict that erupted between the Ishi Ozalla Community in Nkanu West local government area of Enugu State and some Fulani herdsmen which led to the death of a Fulani and two cows on Monday is said to have been brought under control following the quick intervention of security agencies.

But reports from the area indicated yesterday that tension is mounting in the area as some aggrieved Fulani youths threatened to revenge the killing of their member.

Some youth in Ishi Ozalla clashed with the Fulani herdsmen within the community for allegedly destroying crops belonging to some natives as well as raping some women in the area.

Following the disagreement between the two parties, a fierce fight ensued during which the Fulani herdsman and two cows were killed while some natives sustained severe injuries, a development that heightened tension in the community before a combined team of soldiers and policemen were drafted to the place.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said that the quick deployment of security operatives to the area prevented the escalation of the dispute, adding that both parties were summoned by the Commissioner of Police where a successful dialogue was held.
He said that the security operatives had been stationed in the community to maintain peace and order so that both parties could go about their normal businesses without molestation.

Speaking on the conflict yesterday, General Overseer of Amazing Love Assembly, Bishop Amaechi Nwachukwu, appealed to the Inspector General of Police, the Director of Security Services (SSS) and security agencies in Enugu State to use their good offices to see that peace was restored to the community.
“I do believe that dialogue is always a better way of resolving conflicts, more so in circumstances where properties have been destroyed, crops ruined with reported deaths and injuries. Everyone should exercise the greatest restraint and every form of provocative statement should be avoided at this moment to avoid stoking an already aggrieved situation,” Bishop Nwachukwu said.
The clergy, however, urged all men of goodwill on both sides of the dispute to come together to resolve their differences, advising that whatever prompted the disruption of the harmonious relationship existing between the natives and Fulani herdsmen should be nipped in the bud.

Religion / What Is Your Talk About Tithing by playnaija(m): 4:08pm On Jul 11, 2012
Saw this post from this website:

It needs to be established at the very outset here that this study does not teach against Christians giving into the work of God. It is about how they give – whether spontaneously, or by compulsion. A teaching persists in the contemporary church that Christians under grace in the New Testament are obligated to tithe as the Jews under the law had to tithe in the Old Testament. There are no defining scriptures anywhere in the Bible however, to validate such teaching. Nevertheless the proponents of tithing do use scriptures to argue their position.

The purpose of this study is to examine those scriptures in context to determine if they really can be used for that purpose. But first let us find out exactly what the tithe is (CP Lev 27:30-34). We see from this that the tithe is a tenth part. Under the law here the Old Testament Jews had to pay ten percent of the produce of the earth and the increase of their herds and flocks to God. It had nothing to do with money then, as it has today. Today the tithe is stipulated as ten percent of one’s gross income which has to be paid to the local church. Those who argue for the tithe use Mal 3:8-11 to teach that the local church, being the place where Christians are spiritually fed, is the New Testament equivalent to the Old Testament storehouse where the tithes had to be taken, and that New Testament Christians who withhold their tithes will be cursed the same as the Old Testament Jews (CP Mal 3:8-11). Nothing that God says here can be applied to New Testament Christians. God rebuked the Jews who were under the law and obligated to tithe. New Testament Christians are not under the law because it has been fulfilled in Christ, and they have been redeemed from its curse (CP Ro 10:4; Ga 3:13-14).

The tithe is first mentioned in scripture when Abraham tithed to Melchizedec – a priest of the most high God – from the spoils of war after the slaughter of the kings, when Abraham rescued his nephew Lot and the women captives, in Gen 14 (CP Gen 14:18-20). We will learn more about this tithe and how it is represented by the proponents of tithing in the contemporary church a little later when we study He 7. Another argument for tithing is said to be found in Mt 23:23 (CP 23:23). Many in the church believe that by acknowledging the obligation of the Jews to tithe here Jesus is teaching that tithing is also obligatory for New Testament Christians. Tithing is not even the issue though. Jesus was rebuking Scribes and Pharisees who were subject to the law and obligated to tithe anyway. The issue Jesus was addressing was not their tithes, but their neglect of justice, mercy and faithfulness toward others. To practice these was more important then being sticklers for the smallest detail of tithing (CP Mt 23:24-33). This is what Jesus was really leading up to in Mt 23, which precludes V23 from being used to teach that Jesus was sanctioning tithing for New Testament Christians.

Compulsory tithing under the law in the Old Testament does not translate to giving under grace in the New Testament. The New Testament does not compel Christians, but rather invites them to give generously in response to the needs of others, and as an expression of their love for God (CP 1Cor 16:1-2; 2Cor 8:1-15; 9:1-15; Ga 6:6-8; Jas 2:13-17; 1Jn 3:16-19). We learn from these scriptures that New Testament giving is voluntary, spontaneous and freely given, not from a sense of obligation nor with an intent to merit blessings. Giving is to be seen as a privilege, not an obligation. 1Cor 16:1-2 is used by those who promote tithing to teach that the money the Corinthians were to put aside each Sunday represented the tithe. 2Cor 8:2-4 is used to encourage Christians to tithe, yet in V8 Paul clearly states that he was not commanding the Corinthians to give; he only wanted them to prove the sincerity of their love for their brothers and sisters in Christ. In V7 he calls their giving an act of grace, which is the exact opposite of mandatory tithing. In 2Cor 9:5 Paul stresses the importance of the collection being seen as a willing gift, not as money that has been extorted from them (CP 1Cor 16:3-4 with 2Cor 8:2-4, 7-8 and 9:5). The clear teaching in all these scriptures is that New Testament giving under grace comes from what one has, not from what one does not have. Christians are only expected to give according to their means, and although there must a readiness and eagerness in giving, Christians do not have to run themselves into debt or reduce themselves to poverty level in order to give into God’s work. This is acceptable to God. The issue is one’s willingness to give – not the amount (CP Lu 11:41; 2Cor 8:11-12; 9:7). Christians must not feel bad if they are ever unable to give (CP 2Cor 8:13-15). This teaches that Christians who are well off should meet the needs of those who are not. In this way none will lack, and there will be equality for all, just like God directed the Israelites with the manna in the wilderness (CP Ex 16:16-18).

There are four things Christians must do in giving: they must give willingly from the heart, they must not give grudgingly; they must not give of compulsion; they must give cheerfully (CP 2Cor 8:12; 9:5, 7). Christians who give what they can to those in need will find that the grace of God furnishes a sufficiency for their own needs, and even more, in order that they may abound in good works for others (CP Psa 41:1-2; Pr 11:24-25; 19:17; 22:9; Ecc 11:1; Lu 6:38; 2Cor 9:6, 8-15). At the heart of all Christian giving is the acknowledgement that God is the creator, the owner, and the giver of all things, and what we give back to God is only a part of what He has given to us in the first place (CP Gen 1:1; Ex 19:5; De 8:7-20; 1Chr 29:10-16; Psa 24:1; 50:10-12; Hag 2:8; Jn 1:1-3; Jas 1:17; 2Pe 1:3). Everything Christians have belongs to the Lord. No one has anything that they had not first received from God.

Those who hold that tithing is obligatory for New Testament Christians also use He 7: 1-10 to teach that, as Abraham was the antecedent of all New Testament Christians and paid a tithe to Melchizedec, it is incumbent upon all New Testament Christians to tithe. They contend that Abraham was the representative tithe payer of all his seed to come, which Christians are (CP Ga 3:29). Now let us look at He 7:1-10, but in the context of the whole chapter to see what it really means (CP He 7:1-28). When kept in the context of the whole of Ch 7 it is plain to see that tithing, as being obligatory for New Testament Christians, is not being taught in V1-10 at all. Melchizedec is the subject, not Jesus, and tithing is mentioned only in the context of demonstrating the superiority of Melchizedec over Abraham and Levi in the first place, and the superiority of Christ’s eternal priesthood over the temporary Levitical priesthood in the second place, which makes the New Covenant superior to the Old. That is the theme of He 7, not tithing. Tithing is only incidental to proving that the New Covenant, of which Jesus is the mediator, is by far superior to the Old Covenant, and it cannot be made to mean anything else (CP He 7:19, 22-28; 8:6-13; 9:11-15). We also learn in these scriptures that the Old Covenant has been made obsolete in Christ and done way with in its entirety. That was how God designed it: the Old Covenant was only temporary; the New Covenant under Christ is everlasting (CP Hos 2;11 with Ro 3:21-22; 10:4; 2Cor 3;7-14; Ga 3:19-26; 4:21-31; 5:1-4; Eph 2:13-16; He 7:12, 18:22; 8:6-13; 9:8 -15; 10:1-10).The clear teaching in all these scriptures is that the Old Covenant, which includes the law on tithing, has been completely abolished in Christ and has no relevance for New Testament Christians. Yet those who stand for tithing argue that the tithe itself was not abolished, because it was established by Abraham four hundred and thirty years prior to the law when he tithed to Melchizedec in Gen 14:18-20, which we looked at earlier, and therefore it should be carried on by New Testament Christians. They use Ga 3:17-18 as their proof text. Let us see what it says, but also in context (CP Ga 3:13-18). This scripture cannot be used to teach that Abraham’s tithe to Melchizedec should be continued. This has nothing to do with tithing, or Melchizedec. It is about the Covenant God made with Abraham. Paul is using the analogy of God’s Covenant with Abraham, and a legal agreement made between humans, to show that once the parties to it ratify an agreement, it stands forever – it cannot be annulled or voided. What Paul is teaching here is that the blessings God promised Abraham stand forever too. They were not affected by the law in any way (CP Gen 12:1-3, 7; 13:14-18; 15:1-18; 17:4-8; 22:15-18; 26:1-8; 28:1-4, 10-15 with Ro 4;1-25). This is the Covenant God made with Abraham. The purpose of the law was to keep a sinful people in the way of salvation until the seed of Abraham – Christ – came to inherit the promise, and distribute the blessings to all who receive Him by faith as saviour (CP Ga 3:6-16, 19-29). Everyone in Christ, regardless of nationality or sex, is the seed of Abraham and heir of God’s Covenant promise.

It is patently obvious from the scriptures studied thus far that none of them can be legitimately used to promote tithing as a New Testament Christian obligation. As stated at the outset of this study, there is no defining scripture anywhere in the bible to validate any teaching that it is incumbent upon New Testament Christians to tithe. As also stated previously, compulsory tithing under the law in the Old Testament does not translate to giving under grace in the New Testament. New Testament giving is centred entirety around stewardship – Christians giving of themselves completely to the work of God – which includes their time, their finances, and their material possessions (CP Mt 10:37-39; Mk 8:34-38; Lu 14:26-35).

None of this is teaching against New Testament Christians giving in to the work of God through their local church. Scriptures are very clear on the subject of giving – only those who sow into the Kingdom will reap the Kingdom benefits (CP Ga 6:6-10). Paul is defining God’s law of sowing and reaping here. It applies to every aspect of the Christian walk: Christians giving of themselves, their finances and their time to others; their financial support of the ministry, their moral behaviour, and their Christian service. Ga 6:9-10 teaches that while ever Christians keep doing good, in spite of the opposition they may encounter, in due course they will reap the fruit of the harvest. And notwithstanding that they are to do good unto all men, they are to be particularly concerned with the well - being of other Christians (CP Mt 25:31-46). All Christian giving has to be as to God, the Christians’ source, for whatever Christians do they are doing it as unto Jesus. Jesus equates Christians’ treatment of those in need with their treatment of Himself: what Christians do for them, they do for Him. The Christian walk is not only a spiritual walk, it must also serve the material needs of others, especially other Christians (CP Jas 2:13-17).

Here Christians are presented with the real test of their faith. Christians are not justified by works, but because they are justified by faith, they do the works. This proves their consecration to God’s service and confirms their love for God and for each other (CP 1Jn 3:16-19). The only faith that saves is that demonstrated by works out of Christians’ love for God. This scripture is the exact counterpart of Jn 3:16: “Whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. 1Jn 3:16-19 is the acid test of Christianity by which Christians know whether they are following the example of God’s love to others. If Christians are not willing to give of material things to others in need, they certainly would not lay down their lives for them. It is not enough that wealth and material possessions are acquired for self-gratification. They must always be made available for the work of God (CP Mt 6:19-24; Lu 12:13-21; 2Cor 9:5-6). Although God’s law of sowing and reaping dictates that blessings will always be returned for generosity, Christians must never give in order to receive. Giving must always be motivated by love.

It is the duty of all who are taught the word to help provide material support for those who teach the word. Those who minister the word are entitled to live off the word (CP 1Cor 9:7-14; Ga 6:6; 3 Jn 5-cool. No workers of the word should have to seek help in any form outside the church. Christians have a duty, which should be seen as a privilege, to contribute to the needs of every worker of the word. They must not be treated like beggars, but received, sent, and supported in a manner worthy of God (CP Mt 10:40-42; Lu 10:3-7; 1Ti 5:17-18). In Mt 10:41-42 Jesus promises that “he that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward”. This teaches Christians how important it is in God’s purposes to receive and support true messengers of the gospel.

In bringing this study to a close here it needs to be re-stated that while there is extensive teaching on Christians giving into the work of God in the New Testament, there are no scriptures whatever that teach tithing. What they do teach is that Christians belong to God and what they have is held as a trust for him. Their giving is done to help those in need and to advance the Kingdom of God. They are only obliged to give in accordance with their means, out of what they have, and the amount they give is not as important as their willingness to give it. Giving is seen as proof of their love. It is done sacrificially and voluntarily. In their giving Christians sow not only money, but also faith, time and service. To sum up, their giving is characterized by what Paul said in 2Cor 9:7, “every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
