The Usual Things related to elections in Nigeria

1. One party will out-rig the other. They will both rig. So, rigging matters.

2. The loser will make small noise so his followers won't think he's accepting it without a fight. The rogues among them would be running around the streets killing innocent persons and destroying their property. Reprisals follow.

3. The loser and the winner will make peace and call for calm.

4. Money and contracts will be shared between the leadership of both parties.

5. The foolish followers that got injured or killed or risked their lives will not receive shi-shi from the shared kudi.

6. The Nairaland political analysts will continue analysing.

7. Has anything changed? No! Whoever wins is still recycled.

Be wise!

PoliticsNigeria’s President Prefers To See No Evil, Speak No Evil by Positivist(op): 1:28pm On Jan 14, 2015
With the world’s gaze focused on Paris last week, militants from Boko Haram destroyed the town of Baga and several neighboring villages in northern Nigeria, killing up to 2,000 people and displacing thousands more. On Saturday, at least another 16 people were killed when extremists strapped a bomb to a girl who may have been as young as 10 and then detonated it in a crowded marketplace.

You’d expect Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to condemn the carnage inside his country, particularly after he called last week’s massacre at a French satirical newspaper a “dastardly terrorist attack.” But you’d be wrong: Jonathan has yet to acknowledge that any of the Boko Haram attacks even took place. On Monday, a spokesman for the Nigerian defense ministry said the death toll from the Baga massacre had been “exaggerated” and said the government’s own count put the tally at 150. Other groups are working toward a solid tally, but the Nigerian government has a long history of underestimating and downplaying the prevalence of Boko Haram.Jonathan, who has been widely criticized for his failure to defeat the group, is up for re-election on Feb. 14, when he will face Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim northerner running on a platform of increased security.

On Sunday, Nigerian archbishop Ignatius Kaigama told the BBC that the West hasn’t done enough to counter the extremists. But it was Jonathan who ordered the cancellation of a Pentagon program designed to create a special battalion capable of beating back Boko Haram. The United States had been training Nigerian fighters, but hadn’t been arming them because of earlier human rights violations by the Nigerian army, including mass killings and rapes.Jonathan’s administration and his supporters have tried to blame the West for Boko Haram’s rise, rather than taking responsibility for the group’s growing threat. But that’s a harder argument to make now that even top United Nations officials are demanding action. On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s office said the secretary-general was “appalled” by the Baga attacks and warned that Boko Haram threatens the stability of the entire region. Leila Zerrougui, the U.N. envoy for children and conflict, arrived in Nigeria Sunday to meet with government leaders and local partners in Abuja before traveling further north to meet with displaced children and their families. The U.N. was unable to confirm whether or not she would meet with Jonathan, but a spokesman told Foreign Policy her six-day trip was planned prior to Saturday’s attacks and that tackling Boko Haram is at the top of her agenda for 2015.

Rona Peligal, deputy director of the Africa division at Human Rights Watch, told Foreign Policy that while Boko Haram’s alleged use of a young child as a suicide bomber this weekend is especially gruesome, this is not the first evidence of Boko Haram turning to children to intensify their attacks. The schoolgirls kidnapped from Chibok last spring were not only sexually abused but “were forced to serve as decoys for Boko Haram and engage in harming other people,” she said.

And it doesn’t help that on the other end of the battle, children are also being used to try to slow the group down.As the Nigerian army continuously fails to respond to the group’s attacks, children are increasingly joining the Civilian Joint Task Force, a vigilante group battling the extremists in the north. And HRW has reported that when boys recruited by Boko Haram are caught by security forces, they are often abused or killed, regardless of their age. Some witnesses told HRW that Muslim children are regularly targeted by Nigerian security forces and then disappear into secret prisons for years at a time. According to some former detainees, the conditions in holding cells have led to hundreds of deaths from dehydration, hunger, and abuse.

Nigeria’s neighbors, including Chad and Cameroon, have also suffered from Jonathan’s inability to beat back Boko Haram. On Monday, the Cameroonian military reported that Boko Haram launched the second attack against a Cameroonian military base in just two weeks. Monday’s strike targeted a base in Kolofata, 10 kilometers from the Nigerian border. Previous assaults on Kolofata have included the kidnapping of the deputy prime minister’s wife, who was rescued in an operation in June that left at least 12 Cameroonian security personnel dead.

Cameroonian government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a televised statement that the Cameroonian military lost one soldier but killed 143 militants in Monday’s attack. When militants attacked a more vulnerable Cameroonian military base in late December, the Cameroonian government was forced to respond with airstrikes.

Schools near the Nigerian border in both Chad and Cameroon have preemptively closed to protect students targeted by Boko Haram, whose name translates roughly from the Hausa language to “Western education is forbidden.”

And while there was a momentary outburst of support for Nigeria in the aftermath of the Chibok kidnappings, very little has been done to guarantee the safety of those suffering under the group’s violent crusade in the north — or to try tackling the problem at its root, by arming troops to fight the terrorists.

EducationHow To Spend Lesser Money On Your Educational Research by Positivist(op): 5:09pm On Jan 11, 2015
Carrying out educational research is a major calling that must be answered by all students in universities before they could be awarded their degrees or diplomas. It requires devotion of time and effort.

I’m inspired to write this recalling what it took me to do my undergraduate research work. What I’m writing about here isn’t for lazy bones that depend solely on other researchers, copy their work and publish as if it were theirs. Researchers work solving certain societal problems in some unique ways. You as a young researcher can’t be any different.

Apart from the time and effort dissipated, research could cost a lot of money depending on the kind of research being carried out, the personality of the researcher and the environment in which the research is being done. Therefore, there is the need for you as a researcher to seek means to spend lesser money on your educational research work and maximise your potentials. Do you want to minimise spending costs on your research work? Seek these tips!

DO THE RESEARCH WORK YOURSELF

Rather than paying others to do the work for you, consider doing it yourself. This requires of you a vast knowledge about what you are doing. Choose a suitable topic, gather relevant related literature, determine a methodology to use, analyse data gathered, interpret them and draw appropriate conclusions all on your own. You’ll need to read wider to be able to achieve that all alone. Your internet connected phone should be used productively. Other elibrary resources for tablets and PCs are also modern alternatives to the library. The more things you can do on your own, the lesser money you’ll spend on others to get them done.

GET SOMEONE TO DO IT AT LITTLE OR NO COST

After exploring the initial option, try this. You would likely need a research assistant to handle some aspects of your field work. Let it be someone who can provide such service probably for free or charge you a little. . In my own case, my dad was available to complement my efforts with regards reviewing the content of my research work before I submitted them to my supervisor. Your friends, siblings or associates would be glad to help. Discuss it with them! I’m sure they would be glad to help.

OWN ELECTRONIC GADGETS

Are you using your own laptop to type your work? Do you equally have access to a printer or photocopier too? That saves you a lot of money that you could have spent at a vendor’s shop. Modifying and editing your work at will wouldn’t be any easier that when you own. At least, a laptop of your own would do for now.

MINIMISE MULTIPLICITY OF EXPENSES

Sometimes, minimising spending is all it takes to spend lesser on your educational research. For example, if you have to can use the same test on multiple occasions, produce answer sheets for respondents so that you would be able to use the sample question paper for others. Isn’t that beautiful?

WORK WITH A GROUP

If your project supervisor permits, working on the research as a group saves a lot of money. Members of the group contribute money as much as they contribute ideas. With the expenses divided among all, your financial burden resulting from it would be minute. Group works makes researchers learn more from one another and grow together. Group work rocks!

APPLY FOR RESEARCH GRANTS

Funding your research could be handled by some other people. Why not contact them? There are a number of local and international governments and corporate bodies ready to fund research in various research projects. Google search to get one for your work. They would be pleased to fund your visionary exploit to add to knowledge. Their funding might cover all expenses or an appreciable part. I wish you all the best as you carry out your research.

Which other ways can people spend lesser on their research work?

Education10 Things You Should Do Before Your Final Year In School by Positivist(op):
Abdussalam:
By this time in the next two years or so, you would have been rounding off your undergraduate programme. If you want to be sure you had prepared for life after campus, you’ve got to start these right from now! This is actually based on the notion that you’ve already taken a decision on what you want to be in future. As you get ready for that priced time regarded as ‘final year’, here are the top ten things you should consider doing ahead of then.

Participate in Career Advancement Events:  They are many around. From conferences to seminars, workshops to symposia and from competitions to contests, from grants to scholarships, the list is endless. It only takes discerning minds to identify one. In line with your future aspiration most especially, it is important you attend such career advancement events. Use career advancement websites or google, ask a professional in the field to keep a tab on upcoming career advancement events ahead.

Earn the trust of others: Are you the cunning type? Do you possess some character that could portray you as a dishonest person? It’s high time you started getting rid of such characters. People around you are watching you. News of your good character or otherwise would spread to a place you never imagined in the nearest future. You’d better turn a new leaf today before it’s too late!

Volunteer: Volunteering involves you providing services to people based on your skills or expertise at little or no cost at all. The world is in need of helpful people and such people should be sure that their effort is not in vain. It is important to note that volunteering could even increase your chances of getting a job. In an age when work experience is one of the pre-requisite to get a job, your volunteering experience would be helpful. For example, consider using your leadership and organisational skills, editing, writing, publicity, ICT, social media, medical and child caring skills. Give to the society voluntarily and you would succeed!

Mop up your social media: Watch what you post on the social media. Your first job might be lost as a result of one status update in the same way another could get you a job right before you graduate. Remove that gangster picture of yours. Be equally careful of those who tag you in their status updates, especially if such wouldn’t present you in a good light. If it requires you ‘unfriending’ or ‘blocking’ such people, please do! Be as modest as possible in your posts. There is no crime talking about religion, politics, ethnicity, gender or other topics of diverse views. But if you must, you should thread the path with high level of intellectuality based on facts and avoid maligning other people indiscriminately.

Study Smartly: Studentship isn’t all about working hard to get the highest of grades but studying smartly. Smart studying emphasises you understanding the course content beyond examination situations. More often than not, most students read just to pass exams. Yours should be an exception! Irrespective of what the course is, it important you can apply its contents beyond examination situations. You don’t want to open your over five hundred page engineering textbook when asked to determine solution to a mechanical fault!

Learn some skills: A skill-based personality is the ideal professionally-prepared personality. Go beyond the lectures to learn new skills applicable in the industry generally. It is possible that that step could place you above your peers in future. Skills learnt should be however relevant to contemporary times. Your skills are your selling points!

Engage in fruitful journeys: Before you decide on embarking on any sojourn as a student, weigh the benefits. Ask yourself what you stand to lose by not participating as much as you consider what you stand to gain. You don’t want to found in the midst of street urchins nor would you want to be caught in the web of some controversy betraying your sparkling good character.

Get yourself a mentor: Career mapping comes to play here. Your career should be plan-based. You would need a trustworthy professional in the field to be your mentor. He is more likely aware of current trends relating to achieving career success. He can easily help you in material and technical support where necessary. Your mentor should be your adviser in making professionally-inclined decisions. There is no need for an aspiring lawyer having a physician as his mentor. Choose your mentor wisely!

Start practicing before graduating: Do you want to be a teacher? Start acting as one directly or indirectly. Clinch with a professional in your field of choice and request being his assistant/intern Don’t expect to be paid since you are not yet a graduate. They could consider paying you if they have the resources to cater for that. You know what? Practice makes perfect!

Be prayerful: God is the one who makes our plans materialise. Whatever we have in stock can only be successful combining dedication with prayer. There are stories of dedicated people who yet failed. That’s as a result of lack of God’s blessings in their acts. Think God first!

People generally see tertiary institution life as being full of freedom. Yes, it is! Everybody is free to do whatever they wish. Why not do something personally worthy of reverence and reference against the future? Choose to do something beneficial for yourself. Your future starts now!

FamilyFaceless Islamic Doll For Children Launched In Britain by Positivist(op): 9:55am On Dec 16, 2014
A doll with no nose, mouth, or eyes has been launched for Muslim children in Lancashire, UK. The faceless doll was created by Ridhwana B, a former teacher at a Muslim school. It is aimed at children living in strict Muslim families. In order to adhere to Islamic rulings regarding the depictions of facial features, the doll has no eyes, nose or mouth. The doll comes in just one design, it wears a traditional hijab headdress and red dress. The toy took four years to create and is being sold for $40. There is a limited number of them now but
Ridhwana says she will be ready to create more if demand for them is high.
She said, “The Islamic range in kids toys is quite limited at the moment with few choices. Although this project took a while, I am looking at researching other ideas in the future. I am looking at compiling a book for the Islamic upbringing of children in the future too.” Strict Muslim teachings rule against the representation of humans and animals in other forms, and specifically Muslim gods and their companions. That means the depiction of facial features of any kind, including pictures, sculptures and even dolls are forbidden.

Politics2015: Age Shouldn't Be An Issue In This Election by Positivist(op): 3:14pm On Dec 15, 2014
by George Onmonya Daniel
-----------------------------------
Muhammadu Buhari is 72 years old. 72 is not too old to become a president. The reason why age has been an issue in Nigeria is that the old people who hold this country hostage since independence are still in power raping and looting the nation blind without thinking. It is only in Nigeria that you see an old man, someone like Tony Anineh and Olusegun Obasanjo still building doing contracts and building estates. Our old men have become old men without wisdom. What can they teach us? Nothing. That's why the young people are saying we need young people to take over. However, over the years the old men have trained indisciplined, spoilt and ungrateful children and successors that even if these people take over power, they will become worse than the old crooks.

What we need today is a discipline man, a leader who will bring respect to our nation. A man who would stand for us and we would all be proud that he represents us. Who cares if he or she is forty years old or eighty years old.

I must tell you brothers and sisters. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself who is worthy of becoming the president in 2015? Who will represent me better. Forget religion and tribe. Yes, a lot has happened and some of us are angry that these things happened. People were killed here and there and some people didn't talk about the matter when they should have talked. I have written about this over and over again over the years. I have said my mind and I don't care what anyone thinks of what I says about it. I say my mind because I am convinced about whatever I say and have said all over these years. And this is not the last thing I will be saying here but I want you to remember this one thing I am saying right now.

On Valentines Day, February 14th, 2015, two months from now, vote people because you believe they can not because of all the fight we have fought. Vote a man, a woman, because you believe in them. Don't vote for any other reason than that. Believe me this is not about age and it shouldn't be. This is not about religion and it shouldn't be. This is not about tribe and it shouldn't be. This should be about I like Nigeria as it is right now or I want to do something about it. That doing something about it maybe your vote for Muhammadu Buhari or Goodluck Jonathan. For whatever reason you vote make sure it is something revolutionary. I personally don't like the gang up on Goodluck Jonathan by a cabal who feel they can change Nigeria or destroy it. Goodluck Jonathan's winning will be destroying the cabal's ego. If Goodluck Jonathan wins I will love to see their faces. But who wouldn't be excited by Muhammadu Buhari winning this one? I will.
PoliticsWhat If Buhari Loses The Apc Primaries? by Positivist(op): 8:44pm On Dec 02, 2014
In the past few weeks, I've seen a lot of over-hype of Gen Muhammadu Buhari, a Presidential Candidate of the APC. Here in the middle belt, the hype is so much that you'll think some people would commit suicide if he doesn't win in the primaries. In the last three days, I'd seen photoshopped pictures of GEJ, Obama and other notable personalities holding placards that call on the viewer to vote Buhari. As much as I respect this man's decision to contest once more, I don't see any appropriacy in overhyping of a man yet to win his party primaries. Some had said APC is Buhari or Buhari is APC. Does he have the resources to win? What would happen if Buhari loses the APC Primaries?

PoliticsRevealed: The Nigerians Aboard Jet That Smuggled $9.3 Million Arms Money To SA by Positivist(op): 10:16am On Nov 23, 2014
A private jet that conveyed $9.3 million cash from Nigeria to South Africa for an arms deal between the two countries, had Nigerian crew members, and passengers from Israel and Austria, new documents obtained by PREMIUM TIMES in Johannesburg have shown.
There were three Nigerians aboard the plane, the documents show.
PREMIUM TIMES obtained the manifest of the jet that transported the huge sum, and has confirmed the identities of the passengers and crew who delivered the controversial package.
South Africa seized the money early September, accusing the Nigerian government of violating its laws regulating the transfer of cash.
Another payment by the Nigerian government for arms to combat the extremist Boko Haram sect, was also confiscated. The second transfer, totalling $5.7 million, was wired through the banks.
The South African ambassador to Nigeria was later quoted as saying the money had been returned to Nigeria, a claim that has yet to be verified.
Details of the first transaction, revealed by a South African newspaper, City Press, said an Israeli and two Nigerians were aboard the airplane that transported the sum to Lanseria airport in South Africa.
The first tranche of the money was conveyed to South Africa on September 5 in two plastic bag suitcases and two hand luggage aboard an airplane belonging to Ayo Oritsejafor, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN.
While the Nigerian government confirmed the transactions, it denied violating any foreign law. The government also refused to provide the names of those aboard the airplane.
In its report, widely quoted in the Nigerian media, City Press said the Israeli passenger, Eyal Mesika, had the key to the combination lock of the suitcases. The paper also said two Nigerian passengers were aboard the plane. It quoted South African law enforcement officials.
The report however did not reveal the identities of the Nigerians, and South African officials also declined to provide those details to PREMIUM TIMES when contacted from Nigeria by telephone.
In an investigation that involved visiting South Africa, PREMIUM TIMES has obtained documents showing details of the transaction, including the flight manifest of the airplane.
The listing shows that beside Mr. Mesika, the only Nigerians on board the aircraft were crew members.
The other two passengers who conveyed the cash were Austrians, the manifest shows.
The two Austrians are named, R. Wolfgang and M. Michael.
The flight crew members of the Project Eagle Air jet with flight number: N808HE were Ojongbede R.T (captain), Fejoku U, (flight officer) and George E.E (flight attendant).
The listing contradicts reports that the other passengers were Nigerians, a claim that set off an intense controversy after the All Progressives Congress, APC, accused a former militant leader, Dokubo Asari, of being one of those aboard the plane.
The APC relied on unverified reports by some news websites [not PREMIUM TIMES] in making the false claim.
Mr. Asari denied the allegation and threatened legal action against Lai Mohammed, the spokesperson of the APC.
In an interview with PREMIUM TIMES at the time, Mr. Asari threatened to physically assault Mr. Mohammed if he failed to get justice in the courts.
“After all the South Africa People have given the names of people on the plane and if by next week we go to court and the court is being manipulated not to give me justice, I will resort to self-help,” he said.
“I have the capacity to resort to self-help. I will not give anybody any apology because if a man has mouth to malign me then I can use what I have to fight for myself.”
