The federal government may consider selling the Port Harcourt refinery after the planned rehabilitation which is put at the cost of $1.5 billion, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva has revealed.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television programme ‘Politics Today’ monitored by Daily Independent, the Minister who was responding to questions on why the federal government chose to repair the refinery after several failed efforts in the past, said it is improper to sell a refinery that is not working.

He also added that when functional, the refinery will not be managed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) but will be handed to a professional operations and management company to manage its affairs.

In his words “I know there has been discussion about selling the refineries. There was actually a time that the refineries was actually sold and then that decision was also reversed. in the history of the refinery, a lot has happened”.

“The thinking is that you do not sell a refinery that is not functioning. It is not every sale that led to success. For example, we sold Ajaokuta Steel plant but it did not make any difference. The people who bought it only tried to cannibalised it and then try to sell it off”.

“We believe that if you sell a refinery that is not working, the people who buy it might just decide to cannibalise it and then sell it off. And then what are you going to say since you have sold it?”

“What we want to do is to ensure that the refinery is working first before we take that decision on what step to take next. That is why we are going to fix this refinery. Let this refinery work efficiently at 100 percent”.

“Then this time, we are going to get a professional Operations and Maintenance ( O&M) company to run the refinery. This time it is not going to be NNPC or government that will run it after we rehabilitate it”.

“At that point, when the refinery is working at full capacity, the government will then take a decision what to do with it; either to sell it off to private sector or to privatize it. Whatever government wants to do with it will be done after the rehabilitation but let us ensure that we are able to give Nigerians a functional refinery first” .

Lucky buyer. FG already repaired it with tax payers money. After one year, they will say the refinery is not producing well and then sell it for $100 million

Criminals! They want to embezzle the money.TAM year in year-out but nothing have changed yet these old and moribund refineries remained great source of economic wastage. Abeg just privatize it straight away.

"The government-owned refineries, being run by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, reported a total loss of N778.71bn from 2015 to 2019, an analysis of data collated from their financial statements has shown. The refineries generated total revenue of N21.12bn in the five-year period as they operated at below their full capacities..."

This report just showed the rot and wastage these refineries have become on this nation.Hence I asked two staunch defenders of this cursed government to explain how this corruption happened under the leadership of the alleged most holy but sanctimonious anti-corruption czar- President Muhammadu Buhari as minister of petroleum within five years yet our moribund refineries are operating @ a far below full operational capacity.I am yet to get convincing answer.

Where are the activists in this nation
The amount they're employing to repair the refinery is enough to build a new one yet they want to first expend that before selling it at a paltry sum to their cronies.
Nigerians are being taken for a ride, taken for fools by the government

sad. Enough of this heartbreaking news jare, why dont you sell the majority shares and have something like the LNG pact? Do you need external battery and powerbank for laptops, phones etc. Ten hours plus guaranteed and twenty four hours of usage very possible! Recommend to your friends.

Omo, these people de take us catch cruise.

$1.5b can't comfortably mount a new refinery with up to speed facilities. Who doesn't know renovation cost more.

Then after spending such money patching old cloth with new one then you aution it to your cronies for penny.

Least l forget, where is Ibe Kanchukwu and his APC fake promise.

One of the reason l supported Atiku in 2015 was not because is wasn't a criminal but his plans were analytical and viable. Sell the refinery. Its burden on us and yet APC wants to sink $1.5b to it.

This country isn't working. Na make everybody fight to dip handle for the national treasure.
