As someone who has spent a lot of time in the goal post, here is my experience.

Headed shots are mostly close ranges. The closer, the more difficult.

Heading a ball alters it's direction and adds more force to it in a blink, a change in direction that no keeper can ever guess so you only have your instincts, agility and good luck.

Leg shots are different because the direction of the ball can be guessed/calculated from the movement of the player's legs. Wrong guess will send you the wrong direction. But if you guess/calculate rightly then the only thing that will stop you from saving the ball is the speed of the ball, your own speed and how close you're to the direction it is going.

Headed shots are like "deflection pro max" you're never ready for it.

Two things are involved: the power exerted on the end of a shot or header. The other is the aerodynamics involved when the ball travels after it's hit.In simple terms, the way the ball swerves in motion.

Re: Why Are Headed Goals More Difficult To Save In Football? by OyinO: 12:54pm On Mar 22, 2021
Very simple. The head doesn't give the keeper a clue of the direction or path the ball will travel unlike leg shot that you can anticipate or calculate the direction it is going because of the backward momentum gathered by the leg which shows or exposes its possible forward direction.

Well the brain is in d head
Re: Why Are Headed Goals More Difficult To Save In Football? by Nobody: 12:56pm On Mar 22, 2021
Because

1. it’s more difficult for the keeper to tell what direction the ball will go based on body positioning of the attacking player. Sometimes even the attacker himself can’t control exactly where it will go.

2. The ball is coming towards the keeper at a much higher altitude than if it was a shot.

3. Headers are usually much closer to the goal line than shots hence less reaction time for the goalkeeper to attempt a save.

It's because a heading ball has no direction while the leg shot has a direction.

Good morning people.

Having watched over a 1000 football matches, I've come to notice that headers are almost impossible to save.

I've regularly seen keepers save leg shots from point blank range, but once a striker gets a header on target, 9 times out of 10 it ends in the back of the net, even if it's from some yards out.
So why is it difficult for keepers to save headers? And yes I've checked Google but didn't get satisfactory answers.

You just need to be at the goal post as a goalie to have first hand verdict.

Exactly about the scissors kick, I’ve been wondering about that too most especially this kick swears no player ever try kick the ball in the way without it enter the goal net!

the only explanation is that the header can hit the ball in any direction unlike the leg shot where the keeper can think like the player and act accordingly to his posture

It is easier for goalkeepers to save shots becos they can always see it coming most of the times as their eyes are on the player and the ball but headers are more difficult becos the keeper doesn't know who's going to end up heading the ball. When a cross comes in, so many players make an attempt at the ball to try and head it at the same time. At that point the keeper on has his eyes on the ball and not the players and whoever gets to the ball first decides where the ball ends

I agree with you 100&, goal keepers hardly see the header of the ball so is quite difficult to adjust for a quick reflex...
Re: Why Are Headed Goals More Difficult To Save In Football? by Whatshallido: 1:20pm On Mar 22, 2021
The reason is that, when the ball is kicked, there is a force applied to the ball (Kinetic force) which makes the ball to undergo kinetic energy and potential energy.
K. E (energy due to motion) and P. E(energy when the ball is above the ground).
While the ball is moving with full speed, if an attacker heads the ball, the ball will change it's direction (acceleration), at this point the keeper can't save the ball.

Funny but true, heading a ball doesn't guarantee where the direction of the ball is going to which makes it hard for the keeper to determine the main direction cheesy cheesy

This is the answer. All those force over area talks no follow at all. Imagine someone saying the force of the ball from the head is greater than that from the the leg. Isnt that ridiculous?

quote author=espn post=100098382]In the case of leg shots, you have to apply pressure on the ball. While in the case of header the ball is coming with a force already and you are also applying another force by heading it. It is always super fast.[/quote]

Wrong. The force from the leg is greater than that of the. Head. All footballers know this na. If not all the head balls will be tearing nets and the ones that misses should be hitting spectators .

Reason is that a head ball isnt easily predictable by the keeper. It happens at close range mehn...

If you're really a football lover or maybe you do go to the pitch at your leisure time, you ought to know.
Most times you can easily know which direction the ball will go when hit with the left or right foot unlike the Head you can't predict which side it goes. Sometimes when you head the ball you will be surprise to see it go another direction.
