Thanks for the response. I am Mechanical PhD. My dept in OSU have accepted me and even organised a webinar where they sent me $25 meal ticket BUT I am yet to receive any formal admission letter stating funding (as they subtlely promised).....I guess I should wait till "end of March" just as you said for your dept.

The resolution on Council of Graduate schools has an April 15th deadline so I believe all of us should get feedback on/before that date, hopefully.

I just sent a mail to GC of Pittsburgh(rolling) and another. They said my application is still under review (but I am not too trusting). I guess I keep my fingers crossed.

Hopefully, they'll keep to the April 15th deadline, because the pandemic really slowed a lot of schools down.

I don't think they they'll lie that your application is still under review though... from what I have seen, most people haven't gotten admitted for the Fall semester, especially if the school has a high number of applicants.

and I still guess it's early to start sending out applications because, you are not meant to get your visa until up to 120 days before school starts...and it's about 160 days at the moment...we should be patient and hope for the best.

...about the admission letter, I don't think you have any problem since they said they've accepted you. You can also check the application portal and see if there's anything like accepted there (to ease your mind). The formal letter isn't totally important, the VO might not ask for it....You can always send a reminder email to your department about it in about a month to your interview date and tell them about the urgent need. Worst comes to worst, you can print the email that shows you have been accepted & your funding...your I-20 should have all this information though.

For your preparation, kindly go through this thread https://www.nairaland.com/5233208/general-usa-student-visa-enquiries-part

It contains past transcripts of many F1 applicants. Look at the approvals and learn from the denials too. Practice and gain confidence, but have it at the back of your mind that not everyone gets the visa at first trial, some finally do get it after their 4th attempt - knowing this will relieve tension and not make it look like a do or die affair for you.

The money will not do much for him though except his housing is waived too. If it were to be an RA he got, the stipend would be more. Lab assistantship does not pay much. I will advise he waits for the other school and make the best decision for him. A lot of factors will still be considered.

But his tuition is waved ..... so how can the money not do much for an international student.

You expect completely full ride?.... if given ok but to think its not enough .... hummm ok. Hopefully he doesn't wait for other schools and miss out on this

My dear, before I got an offer to the school I'm going to for my MBA, I also had other schools that gave me full-tuition. They are all top 30 schools. Granted, the best funding most get for a top MBA is usually full-tuition, that's if you get any substantial funding at all. So I was kind of happy. One of the schools eventually gave me their highest scholarship award which was full-tuition plus $10K stipend, and that was still not enough. because the estimated living expenses for an MBA is over $30K per year. Where would I have gotten the balance of more than $20K(and I didn't wanna run around to family, friends et al)? We don't earn that much here, even though most economic statistics would place me among the top 2-5% of earners in Nigeria. You can earn 650K per month and still not have substantial savings cos maintaining a decent life here is expensive. Had I not gotten my current school (also a top 30), which gave me a stipend that covers everything plus more, I would have not attended despite full-tuition and $10K stipend. Sometimes full-tuition ain't enough. Depends on the person's situation.

Good day, Fellow Nairalanders,

I have been passively following this trend.

I would be glad to receive your responses to the below questions regarding F-1 visa application.

I am nearing the completion of a master's degree at a University in South Africa and I intend to resume a doctoral position at an American University in the Fall. My question is, will applying and interviewing for my F-1 visa in South Africa (as opposed to Nigeria) reduce my chances of securing the visa?

Since all my family members are in Nigeria, how can I convince the VO of my home ties (if I am applying from South Africa)?

Also, is it okay to tell the VO that I will resume work in Nigeria or South Africa after my doctoral study?

Is there anything else I need to know?

Thank you for your time and invaluable responses.

From my experience, I will tell you to return to Nigeria to apply for your visa. Atleast you will show to some extent that you have some home ties.

Think about it, you finish your MSc in a foreign country, why cant you return to your home country when you are done with the purpose of staying in foreign country? This must be one of the questions your VO will have at the back of his/her mind. I am not an expert but I will advise you to return to Nigeria to apply for the US visa.

I agree with this 100% shows you finished your education and returned home.
Which is basically what F1 visa is about making them feel you are not planning on migrating

Hi Abdullahi,

Applying and interviewing for F-1 VISA from South Africa will not reduce your chances of securing a VISA. Resuming your Ph.D. immediately after your master's degree shows you're ambitious, but you would have to convince the VO why a US School is the next move in your ambitious journey.

If you maintained a good travel history between Nigeria and South Africa, you need not worry about home ties.

That you would be back in Nigeria or South Africa for work should not be the first thing you'd say when asked what you'll do after your Doctoral program. What if there are specific areas in the US where your research breakthrough would significantly boost their economy? I would start by highlighting the importance of evaluating sectors (around the world) where your research would be useful. Obtain buy-in, and contribute to the improvement of the sector. Tailor your responses around being an ambitious researcher and be consistent.

Goodluck.

Hi Iire,

I would advise you to go through some of the interview transcripts that someone shared with you earlier. There is enough information in the transcripts for embassy preparation. Draft a unique transcript and share it for review. When you are ready for a mock interview, please send me a PM.

Yes, you can. Look for schools that offer conditional admission.

You may also want to evaluate your CGPA on a 4-point scale as well.

Hello everyone,

Can the gurus in the house, please guild me. I have interview next month. In my appointment portal, I used my old passport details which has expired since last year because I already had gone for interview before.

My question is, will I have to change it to the new passport number or I should live it still with the former. I tried to edit it but it is not responding.

Also in my DS160 application, is it the new or old passport number I should put.

Thanks
