In my opinion, it is not primarily attributed to the influence of money. Rather, I agree with @Oasis007 with regards to stats.

Today, we analyze and over analyze stats.. including irrelevant and ridiculous stats.. infact we now hear of stats that in previous past were never analyzed and these stats impact everything.
