A first degree in sociology or most courses, is basically an avenue to broaden your mind and make you more adaptable to any kind of career. Assess your interests in life - could it be the media? Could it be marketing? Could it be air travel, Customer Care, etc. Or perhaps you are into social policy? Your life interests , and not necessarily what your certificate reads, could pave way for your career.

It is a versatile discipline that is worth studying for a first degree. But you should look outside the box while on it.

My dear there are many ignorant people here
Don't be discourage I studied political science but presently I am an accountant I would soon be a chartered accountant.
If you study sociology and get a good grade u may get job through graduate trainee the company would fit you in a department they know you could do well
For me I would advise you to pursue a career in human resources. To move faster I will also advise as an undergraduate get human resources certification Such as CIPM so that before you graduate from the university u should be certified.
Lastly get a LinkedIn account where you will see different professionals that can give you advise and willing to mentor you as you pick a career

If you are planning to study the following courses, please don't think that you will end up in your field. They are almost useless in Nigeria

Political Science
Sociology
Psychology
Microbiology
Biochemistry
Parasitology
Public Admin (very useless course)
Economics

Nigeria is gradually moving from what you studied to what skills you have and what you can do with them
You must be mad to include economics, something the world needs at the moment

I see many comment and thank God I studied social psychology. Nigerians don de yab sociology.with them shallow thinking.

Everything is always in relations to food and survival in Nigeria. Imagine thinking if you graduate you go find work. No be wetin you learn and how him impact your thinking suppose shape your world.

If you graduate and you still go find job as a first break out thinking, You did not graduate am afraid. Education liberate thinking enough to unpack or unstructured even the most complex of social structure for one thought to act freely as though the system is a barren field.

That's said, ociology is an advance discipline. The last emerging science. August Comte argue that it will be able to generate laws that will govern human social interaction using the methods of science.

For those of you who don't know what am saying. Check your thoughts slowly and carefully if they are actually yours.

You have no ideal to what extent the social world is structured by the Apex scientific authorities.( Social thinkers). How many of of social psychology is in psychography and how many of it are in adverts and the things you buy that you don't even know if you need. Again how many of you thoughts do you think are yours?

Just think of what you think whenever you hear " according to new research" or "according to scientist. It's the same submissive effect people in controlled Religiouse or traditional society gets when they hear ' God said or the gods has spoken"

Social science has control of your thoughts more than you think.

Don't be scared Sha. Na good thing.

How else do we expect to keep or control this crazy social world with all its diversities. If not through a pitch way of scientific rigorouse thinking.

That's thinking is what is called sociology.

It's better you to go and learn hand work. The job situation is very bad even for those that read professional courses.

I remember back then in school, our lecturers kept lying to us that as a sociologist you can work anywhere and everywhere, here we are after graduation, anywhere and everywhere will even ask you what sociology is all about like they have never heard of it before or it’s kind of strange course, you will start asking yourself if you haven’t made the wrong choice of coming for the interview......

There's no valuable course now that will grant u a sure job after graduation... Even Law don dey useless one Kain...

Just make sure to learn important skills during ur time in school... It'll help u a lot

This is true.
I know some guys that are lawyers, most of them no get shishi grin na suit dey cover their wretchedness, imagine them working under one boss for 15k per month, law no be sort after course again unlike before, in Nigeria! Learn any course you can practice on your own but most universities would give u one course like that to change your destiny, now after graduation u go dey wear suit up and down like a pregnant sheep looking for its missing offspring, learning skill is the more important than getting school certificate but the the latter is more necessary.

Sociology is beautiful to study, I would strongly advise that you consider taking professional courses and try as much as you can to spend your free time learning outside the walls of the school, You can take up marketing, sales or even social media marketing courses online while you are in uni.

Sociology creates a very vast foundation for you. As a sociology graduate, you would have understood the basic concepts in numerous fields, Politics, Marketing, HR, Economics, Psychology, Criminology, Town planning, Accounting, even to some extent Medicine, and lots more. So if you do not intend to further streamline your study in any of the fields Sociology must have prepared you for, Just try to graduate with at least 2.2. So you can submit your CV everywhere like we all do in Nigeria.

Sociology is a very good course to study. U will be looking at venturing into HR field by going for HRM certifications. HR is a nice field and u will fit in perfectly. Those telling u engineering and d rest are not telling u d real truth, there are very thousands of engineering graduates in this country roaming the street. So I will advise u to go for that course and be ready to pad it up.with certifications. Certifications can make u equal and even give u more advantage than someone that studied in dat field.
Eg am an engineer dat did certifications in procurement, I got jobs dat many persons dat studied supply chain and business admin couldn't get

I'm presently studying Sociology,. In my finals. And I can tell you that sociology is a good course, because it provides a solid foundation in both understanding people and systems. So the skills students develop can be used in a wide variety of careers and industries.. everyone knows it is very hard out there in the job market.. the truth is that no one with any kind of degree is going to walk into a job.. it takes grace and favour these days to secure a really good job..

because Nigeria lacks carrea professionalism

that means anybody can take your job from any side without minding

What are the chances of getting employed as a political science student

i would prefer studying pure arts like cinematography, theatre arts, music (production/instruments) and so on

or digital sciences

though i got my Bsc/Ed in political Science and its cool.

you only need to go extra mile or even out of your way

in order words, you may not have to rely only on it

bunch of you work revolves around parastatals and other state institutions and private offices

you can work with the embassy, the force institution or security agancies

you might lecture with your Masters and research

on a lower lever you can teach government, civic or social studies in secondary schools
