IBILEmayweather: I get your points and they are quite valid, but saying that good courses are highly specialized is wrong, some people will still tell you that specialist courses some how limit one's opportunities...I just feel that there's no good or bad course, it's just understanding what the market place demands and fine tuning whatever you studied to meet those demands. |

IamBroke: Sociology is about the social world. And since the world is a social place, a sociology graduate can get job in any fields known to man. It is a far better course than political science. |

Looking at Nigeria today you want to waste your money on sociology. I wonder what's wrong with people, even political science is not a good course, but just a little better than sociology. Don't let your heart lie to you, as u are studying please go learn a skill, both courses are just there for u to claim graduate. |

Social science are very beautiful to study but the truth is that there arent much opportunities their because Nigeria lacks carrea professionalism that means anybody can take your job from any side without minding i would prefer studying pure arts like cinematography, theatre arts, music (production/instruments) and so on or digital sciences though i got my Bsc/Ed in political Science and its cool. you only need to go extra mile or even out of your way in order words, you may not have to rely only on it 2 Likes |

It's a beautiful course to study but a lot of people don't know THAT. Please go ahead and I bet you will not regret you did in the near future. I didn't study sociology for my BSc but my passion led me to that field and I'm forever greatful I'm in that field today. Wish you all best! |

I would say, if you do not have a sound knowledge of a particular subject, please do not offer an opinion. My heart bleeds for most of the responses here. Sociology, like most of the social science majors, is very important for our current dispensation in Nigeria, however, this hasn't been the case. As a sociologist, there are many career opportunities one can embark on, Like Human Resources, Criminology (working with agencies of the judiciary arm of government like the police, EFCC, e.t.c.), Social Analyst, Public Relation, Social Worker, Consultant. The field of Social Science is a gold mine and it's largely untapped in Nigeria. Let's take, for instance, take a look at what BudgIT is currently doing analysing our annual budgets and general public spending. To a great extent, Africa as a continent lacks data and structured information about Human Demography because our Social Scientists have not been up to the task. This could be largely due to a lack of funding or a competency gap. To conclude, the field of Social Science is still a goldmine in Africa as a whole. |
