Good day nairalanders,

Someone close to me is in a state of dilemma and needs advise.

He has been a contract staff in one of the leading commercial banks in Nigeria and was recently converted into a full staff. The issue now is he has been deployed from South West to extreme North (Maiduguri). He has tried every means to get redeployed but all efforts proved abortive.

Considering the fasting rise of unemployment in the country, he feels it's unwise to reject the offer. Still, he's in a state of dilemma.

Should he take the job offer, even though national security is at the lowest there?

Please advise.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any contact that can help, I'll be in the comment section.

Dear Mods, please kindly push to the front page.
let her go. Maiduguri is as calm as Lagos.

I wish her well.

The question is, is the road to Maiduguri safe?

I did not suggest that he travels to Maiduguri by road. Read up, I did write that the Airport in Maiduguri is operational.....

OP Maiduguri city is relatively peaceful they let all this junk journalism make you lose the opportunity. BH only operates in the outskirts of the town (few villages).

Take the offer and travel by flight, make friends with both military men and educated indigenes also make friends with few uneducated ones (their need will come in handy).

Rent a house in old GRA, Damboa road, New GRA or any other high brow areas.

What's junk journalism about the unrest in Borno

You now single out Maiduguri

You are callously funny

1. What do you mean by extreme North?
Maiduguri township is alot safer than most states in Nigeria today.
2. the challenge is only the road leading to Maiduguri than sometimes can be unpredictable, but he has options of flying which is about expensive, but planning ahead can be ok.
3. Are people not surviving in Maiduguri?
you all may just be surprised, once he start working there, he will not like moving out of the city again.that I can assure you from many guys I know.
Above all he should seek the face of God in all that he does, and he will need nobody's opinion on anything.
remain blessed

@op

maiduguri is even one of the safest cities in the country.

It's an irony sef.

The villages are where the terrorists attack mostly.

The city is bubbly and expensive Sir to so many aid agencies settled there.

fly down and continue your work, you will be dazzled at the reality on ground as the media exaggerates the scenario as usual

I will demand for a pay rise and a life insurance and if none is forthcoming then I would rather remain a contract staff.

Bokoharam attacks villiages 20kms from the capital city and you say it is safe? Even Bame is safe, only that bokoharam never reason some places, the greatest mistake you will make is to believe in Nigeria security, even the security personnels do not believe in themselves.

No mind them, Maiduguri that you cannot walk any how at night, you cannot travel by road to other when it past 3pm.

That is the question!!!!

If there is flight, he should go by flight! No matter the cost!
If you travel to Maiduguri by road through Potsitkum after 3pm, you are mandated to sleep over wherever you are, you don't dare cross that road after 3pm.
Re: Should He Accept The Job Offer Or Not? by aniblue(m): 5:50pm On Apr 05, 2021
If boko haram could attacked the Governor, then I'll advice you to let go the offer.
Its safety first!

If i was the one, I would gladly go. So tell that your friend to go and resume there. Even for the non-maiduguri places when we dey, we still dey read of insecurity and killings for our own backyard, but we never pack comot.....

If it were to be Maiduguri of 2009 or earlier, then by all means, he should go but Borno state of today especially since 2019 till date is like a war zone, even the Prof. Governor of the state has cheated death twice on account of Boko Haram attacks in less than 6 months interval inspite of his heavy security entourage.

The question is how much priority do you place on yourself and your life. The same people who transferred you there will never accept such posting. My advice is that, thank the HR guys for the conversion to full staff, also tell them in writing that due to security concerns, you can not take up the Maiduguri posting and finally ask alternative posting.

Once it is in writing, HR will sit up and consider it professionally within the company 's policy and considered your concerns, but if they reply in writing and insisted that it is either Maiduguri or you take a walk. Kindly take a walk, your life is not valued in that organisation and if anything happens to you, you will be replaced in a twinkling of an eye.

5years time, you will look back and pat yourself on the back for not selling yourself short. It is not all jobs that is for you, Sometimes you have to walk away from good jobs to get better onces, talking from experience.

May God guide you and be with you.

The only reason he should go is if he gets a flight there, let him not dare travelling by road as he may not even make it there! As a matter of fact, he's better off raising cash to start a business if he won't get a flight there

I beleive things are not as bad in Maiduguri as we are being made to believe on social media. Getting a job these days in Nigeria is harder than ever. Sitting at home jobless in Nigeria Can be very depressing.

I would say it is worth the risk.

First Bank conversion I guess. Advise your friend to resume duties, then he should quickly apply and claim his relocation allowance which runs in million.

He may choose to resign after that, or he may lobby for swap back to his location.

This year's conversion is a scam.

There's no place more dangerous than the North right now! I personally would prefer to enter a lion's den than go to the North at this time.

I would prefer being jobless and alive than being dead due to my employment.

If he's someone who loves taking risks and the bank assures his safety (by actually providing security) and adds a fat bonus (for the risk) to his salary, then he's good to go.

This isn’t a joke. I repeat. No jokes. It depends on the location of the branch. He has to do a security assessment of the location and gather opinions of those already working there or currently familiar with there. If the journey to the place is safe possibly by flight and branch location is safe as well, Accomodation is provided and nearby and he has No better alternative he can go. Then work a transfer or resign shortest possible time.

Bt as for me I will never go there not in a million years.

Please my sister, tell that person to go. If Maiduguri the capital of Borno is where he was posted, he should go. Maiduguri is pretty safe. Unemployment problem in Nigeria is bad. He should go please, maybe he should just get a safe place to stay there, and live a quiet life, minding his business.
