NADDC inaugurates 1st Nigeria Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Sokoto

The Nigeria Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) on Thursday inaugurated the first Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Nigeria, in Sokoto State. NADDC noted that the pilot project, inaugurated at the Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS), was also in collaboration with the institution.

In his address, Director-General of NADDC, Mr Jelani Aliyu, said that the project was part of the Federal Government’s commitment to the best Nigeria desired by all.

“This is the beginning of a new era for Nigeria as it marks the realisation of the government’s desire to build sustainable technology in the country. “Moreover, our vision and mission at NADDC are not just to enable the production of vehicles in Nigeria but also to produce the best and most advanced technology vehicles in the country. “Today, we have inaugurated the first 100 per cent solar energy powered charging station in Nigeria. “The reason for choosing Sokoto for the pilot project is in consideration of the harsh weather. “However, such weather has become a blessing for us as we can extract and power our homes, offices and even for industrial consumption,” he said.

Aliyu further said that the NADDC was partnering with three universities in the country that included UDUS, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), with the hope of advancing research in renewable energy.

“With the current development, Nigeria can power her economy exclusively with renewable energy and by the time that is achieved, the challenges of power will become history in the country,” he added. The D-G said that it was an opportunity for the institutions to utilise the very best in research to enable them to come up with more advanced technologies in the automotive industry. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of UDUS, Prof. Lawal Bilbis, described the inauguration as a historic landmark for the institution, Sokoto state and Nigeria. Bilbis, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, assured that the university would ensure more collaborative measures to enable NADDC to achieve the desired dreams.

"We are hoping that these collaborations will usher in favourable results to enable Nigerians, even in remote villages, to rely on the gift of nature for energy,” he said.

Wow...this is very impressive....in this our obodo Nigeria? Truly the era of oil is going fast.

Good to know not everywhere in Nigeria is burning. Hopefully this can be copied across the country so that we can all join the Green revolution.

Hard to say, but Fulani Amaka!

This is the problem with nigeria ...I can bet my balls the DG is from sokoto

Why not lagos ? Abuja ? This is rubbish

Same mentality of building high speed rail to Niger with a GDP less than that of anambra or akwa ibom, port Harcourt or even lagos

The thing is that they don't make noise. Silent achievers.

I was shocked the first time I visited the north, especially their capitals. Much more developed than expected.

Solar powered to take advantage of their hot sun. Pure genius.

Lagos & Enugu will be later beneficiaries of a similar project, though maybe not solar.

Sokoto was chosen as the pilot state due to the abundance of solar power due to the extreme weather.
Afterall the biggest critics of electric cars in Nigeria ask " Where is the electricity"? Well Sokoto says it's in the Sun cool.
You can even direct the guy with a TESLA that was featured on the FP yesterdat to Sokoto where he can enjoy his Electric ride without stress cheesy

Finally, what did the past southern DG's of NADDC do for themselves or you never asked?

Igbochief001:

What's the economical benefits of this project for the people of sokoto

1. Elites in the state will be encouraged to buy electric cars and go for the much cheaper, cleaner and easily available electric option of fuel. Trust me there is no shortage of capable buyers in Sokoto contrary to what the internet wants you to believe.

2. It will encourage job creation as electric car technicians will become necessary, and allied industries for parts, components, maintenance etc. are bound to arise.

3. Less dependence on oil/subsidy etc.

4. More jobs for solar technicians and interest in electric car technology

4. Cleaner environment etc.

Beremx:
By the time there are no cars to charge, people will be going there to charge phones.

Misplaced priorities

Actually you're wrong. The Hyndai Kona which is the first electric car is now assembled in Nigeria thanks to the DG's efforts is available to residents of the state and other Nigerians at a much more affordable rate than the popular TESLA electric car. The Hyundai Kona was introduced in the state 2 weeks ago and received a warm reception from state Govt officials, businessmen, politicians and other state residents.

At N24m, it is safe to say only the elites will initially be able to afford it, but like with most new technologies, prices are bound to fall with time.

Even in western advanced countries, fully electric cars (not hybrids) are still on the high side and still the preserve of the elites. This is a step in the right direction.

Typical ...there is absolutely no economic justification for federal government to waste millions on this project

Village solar powered borehole would have been far more economical

You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. You have been jumping around this thread without any positive or useful to say, just pure bitterness and jealousy.

Shouldn't you be more concerned with the insecurity and anarchy in the SE? Instead of holding our leaders responsible when you see the good strides of others, you are here badmouthing senselessly. Did they tell you they are lacking solar powered boreholes? Are you forbidden to enjoy good things? Tufia!

If it has been situated in Anambra state, we wont hear word here.

Infact, it is not even a federal government project..

Everything according to you is federal government.
