A Nigerian man identified as Ifeanyi Onukwubiri has publicly denounced his position as the first son of his family.
According to Ifeanyi, in a letter dated May 7th, revealed he is willing to be the last born of the family as being the first son of the family is a thorn in his flesh, adding that his immediate younger brother should take the position.

In his words: "The position is a total liability to me, a setback and a thorn in my flesh. Hence I am writing to formally inform you that I have renounced my position as your first son, and I am willing to allow my immediate younger brother, Ikenna, to take over the position if he so desires". “By this letter, I am also relinquishing all my entitlements and heritage as your first son to Ikenna and Victor, and they are free to treat these entitlements as they wish. “I will therefore plead that from now on I should no longer be addressed as the first son of your family, I am willing to become the last born if possible.”

This first son burden is only common in some parts of Nigeria
The whole family burden is only common in some part of Nigeria, in the north one can have as many children as possible when the child is 5 yrs old, send them to almajiri n that’s it.
One can easily divorce one of his wife n marry a new one instantly.

Igbo people with their archaic cultural beliefs system. ....when the young man discovered that the pressure and responsibility of becoming a firstborn are bigger than what he can bear....he quickly reclines.
There is much pressure and pressure in observing all these Igbo cultures because some Igbo elders are sitting down idle somewhere waiting to impose stupid and archaic cultural norms on one innocent son who demands their consent...
I want to say that since most southeastern states are Christians while can you jettison all these sardonic laws and culture and completely embrace cultural belief in the Bible as most of the northern states do...
Igbo people are the people that value their cultural heritage most than their religion Hausa /Fulani are not so.... the majority of these people in the northern inculcate Sharia into their belief system which is Islamic and Quran belief...I dare Igbo nation to the same in the southeastern States

He must have seen terrible things for him to go this extent.
Nevertheless, there are certain decisions that we should be very careful before taking action.
Birthright is not what you toil with. The effect goes way beyond you. It could have consequences on coming generations.
The Reason we don't Hear GOD of Abramham, Isaac and Esau is because Esau relinquished his Birthright.

Did Esau relinquished his Birthright or he was scammed by his beloved mother and brother??

He can write all the letters in the world. He is still the first son and no amount of civilization or his personal opinion can change that.

In this harsh and unfavourable economic situation, baba decided to let go off the burden on him. All the same, he shouldn't have made such nasty decision. It's more of a spiritual thingy.

Before I even open the thread, I knew it must be Igbo. Igbo culture and tradition is very complicated and you won't understand unless you are Igbo. They have many rules like in the bible. The first son in Igboland comes with both benefits and responsibilities. You will inherit the family estate in the village and many others but comes with heavy responsibilities too, not for free! You can't even denounce it because the land will come after you wherever you run to.
they don't know, sometimes girls will refuse to date you because you are first son

Being the first son and first child is both beautiful and sacred.
Whosoever that tries to desecrate it will be dealt with by the gods, the land and mother nature too.

To be candid some of our culture need modification in order to meet today's reality. In this bad economy, no body dey Simeon again. You just have carry your load lite or heavy...

Ancient culture putting most responsibilities on first child/born cater for that position not in capitalist economy that don't recognize position except "Affordability" Nothing is static and our culture should be dynamic.
