I think it'll good for you to know that the newer version of FORTRAN (Fortran 2003) is highly recommended for Computer Science students even in 2021. You think computer science is about learning the latest technologies? No, man. It's about giving students solid background in computing which will enable them learn with ease the technologies of their interest.

Let me pause here and refer you to this thread on quora: https://www.quora.com/Shouldnt-Fortran-be-the-first-language-that-undergraduate-CS-students-learn-in-college

Nice words
But all those lecturers won't teach you properly so God punish who's still teaching it, you can gain a solid background just by reading a book ('forgot the title') not learning this shit in 2021.

There are still many stacks to learn, time can be wasted, people need to be job ready, Nigeria no play.
Peace

Well then the problem isn't Fortran but the lecturers. A well taught Fortran course should prepare the students to learn about any other language of their choice.

I thought I read somewhere that NUC replaced BASIC, Fortran, and Pascal with some other programming languages?

Maybe old school, but I'm of the opinion that virtually any general purpose programming language can be used to introduce students to programming. In fact, a language as simple as BASIC helps them focus more on problem solving/algorithm development and worry less about syntaxes. But it would have been much better if the introductory languages were taught at the secondary school level. That way, the university would have enough time to teach languages frequently used in production.

Actually, we'd be doing C++ when we resume for second semester 200L in my school. I'm gearing up for it already.

Most Nigerian state and federal universities will still be doing it. Can't say of the private universities.

Every programming language is structurally the same. The difference lies in what they can do and the level of abstraction that it can take. If you know Pascal and C very well, learning a truly object-oriented language like Java will be a walk in the park for you; you only need to learn to start thinking in Objects and Classes.

Pascal is still very relevant today and Pascal programmers are a rare gem. For instance, Skype was the best messaging platform on earth until Microsoft bought it for $8.5 billion. And yes, Skype was written in Pascal.

The people who laugh at Pascal do so from a point of ignorance.

I always wonder why people think Fortran is outdated? If you are in data science, you will discover that you could do tonnes of things with Fortran.
There are many powerful computer models that are based on Fortran, though most of them are run on Linux!
