Same system that tries to keep us busy can be modified

dairykidd:
Nice thread OP and u are very correct but its a new world system already. The best u can do is accept it but still try to keep the old family values alive.. The system keeps us all too busy overlooking the things that matters most. Conspiracy theorists say its part of the designs to destroy the importance of the family unit...Let's not go there now. A 100 years from now the situation will be worse off. Imagine some people don't even need another to start a family. They do it themselves all thanks to technological advancements. Single women having kids, same sex couples having kids and all that. I think its just part of the price we pay as we evolve. Old traditions are fast dying away whether we like it or not. Accept the new but keep the old close to ur heart.

Another contributing factor is that you can hardly watch TV for 15 minutes without encountering a sex or overtly romantic scene. Which moral you wan begin teach again in that kind of uncomfortable situation? There used to be some restraint on showing raunchy scenes during prime time which used to be family time too but these days, hmm producers have thrown caution and morals to the wind and no one us checking on those contents.

That why quality time is good, it helps in resilience. Your remembrance has made you forget your problems, that the value of quality time.

chlowi:
I remember vividly my childhood days when we sat in the living room to see tales by moonlight , wili wili , and super story , my parents take advantage of those times to instill morals in us , after each episode , each one of us would speak openly about the lessons we picked.

I recall Christmas when dad (God rest his soul) would buy crates of malt, mineral as we called it , live goat (imkpi) and have it slaughtered at home by him and any other grown up make present at the time , have us share to neighbours and friends and we all ate from a large tray on the 25th, it was like a ritual , the taste of that rice and stew was always different from the norm and satisfying , none of us ever missed Christmas even as university students; the bond , jist and laughter was something neither of us could miss for the world .

You dare not skip the parlour times , whether you like it or not and every score was settled before bed time .

Op, your thread just made me forget the current state of naija as I'm beaming with smile reminiscing on those days ... When family was family smiley

Exactly, sometimes we are not conscious of what the Children see on Television, we tend to ignore it. so if many parents ignored it, then you can imagine children will start experimenting earlier.

Especially this days, where many propaganda are on movies, and children may be overwhelmed by the narratives.

I drove into shoprite. To park car, 2 teenage boys saw me trying to park, blocked the space and started taking pictures with their phones. I blew horn and these kids started insulting me. I just called security and they bundled them out of the premise.
What arrant nonsense.

People are getting exposed to nonsense these days.
What about drug abuse?
The moment my younger brother started having red eye, he started avoiding family gatherings.

In a sense, perhaps. Though, in my day, books served the same purpose. I mean, imagine my parents sitting me down in front of Nollywood when I can be reading a good book, I know which I would prefer, just as I am certain I would prefer coming on here to read intelligent posts like yours instead of Nollywood.

I was lucky. There was no Nollywood in my days, to start with, and telly even was no more than one single NTA channel, so my dad and I got quality time discussing books and world events courtesy of the BBC World Service and Voice of America and other radio stations from around the world as received on our Blaupunkt (see photo), while ma, a nurse, was busy doing shifts

If parents listen to their kids more their kids might talk to them more, is what I think.
You must be a grandparent by now

I was opportuned to visit my family house with four of my siblings last months after few days I noticed that once it was 8 o clock we always converge at the parlor and gist till midnight.it started when we where small and I was surprised that we were able to do it unknowingly....I pointed it out and everybody had a good laugh,I made a note to make sure I continue this doctrine with my kids.

Mustiboy, You were making sense till you got to the threat. What do you mean that your child cannot have their privacy "under your roof"? Do you realise that people are different and some people like their PRIVACY? Even if you want to tell them to join, can't you do it with love and try and make them see reasons why they should?

It's your type that think because you are giving someone money you can do and undo and control them. People like you, when your kids have their own money eh, dem go show you! E go shock you!
You can close your door but not lock it. Parents should be able to access their warden's rooms at all times, no matter the gender. Of course, I'll Knock before entry, but I want to be able to come in as soon as I knocked. I don't want to be kept waiting for a minute before the door is opened. It'll make me suspect that you're not doing something right behind the door.

It's not really about the location for me say the sitting room in this instance, it is the level of connection or the effort put in by parties involved to bond and socialize often. That could happen on a road trip to church, at a wedding reception in-between-meals, or any other place else.

Few days ago I sat in the living room with my parents and three siblings. The TV was on and I kind of noticed after about 30 mins' silence since the last person spoke that we all tapped away at our phones. Seeing everyone's face illuminated by their phone screens got me amused at some point. The world has sure changed!
The bolded made me sad honestly. That's the reality now. I've noticed it too

World over people greet the elderly first, warmly and politely. Not the other way around. It's a respect that will be reciprocated one day in old age.
You'd be surprised that some elders will begin to see it as their birthright if not offered greetings first. That's the point I am tryna make. Do not see it as a biggie if a 'smallie' doesn't greet you first. They should jettison the godamn entitlement o.t and embrace humanity by offering first. Selah bruv.

I will forever be grateful to my mum because of the role she played in our upbringing. The communication/bond was top notch.

When we were kids she likes serving our food (rice) in a big tray and asked us to eat together. I didn't like it much then but as I grew older I understood the message she was trying to pass. I can't stay a day without hearing from my siblings, we communicate like boyfriends/girlfriends.

There are some things people do easily without conscience that I find difficult to do and they wonder why and tag me as being weird.

Would you be happy if someone doesn't greet your parents.
That is disrespectful
see my parents are not entitled to greeting from anyone they didn't train. Nor will they take panadol on the matter. They have better things to do.

You are thinking from a gynocentric Egalitarianistic-Equalism frame of mind working with these secularism dogma as your dominant ideology, sure western societies that don't have Culture have shifted from poliltcal conservativism to radical liberalism

We can see the results
1) Moral decadence via hook up culture
2) Decline in marriages and child birth
3)High rate of Divorce at 50% rate and women initiating about 75% of the divorce
4) 40% of children are born out of wedlock and In black American communities it's 60%

These all lead to the destruction of family values and units and children from single motherhood households tend to be criminals, drug addicts, strippers, illiterate, commit suicide, etc

At least our elders have kept family values intact and there is no incentive to divorce because our laws are still Patriachal
if you ask me, the elders should have kept our economy and future intact

Seems most nairalanders grew up in a rich home.

Who dash us TV back then?

The family fun was best during rainy seasons. My Dad would give my mom extra money to buy custard rubber bucket full of fresh ground nut. She and my elder sister would hide everything about the ground nut from us.

Late in the evening, when we returned from playing football and Dad was back from work. Sisters and mum would dish the food on the table, most of us would eat excess. Not knowing that something bigger is coming. Those that know would eat little and pretend to be OKay, whereas they are reserving space for the hot groundnut coming.

After the food, the groundnut will be poured in a big tray on top the table. Those of us that already ate to the brim will start changing face. How do we deal with this groundnut when we already ate full.

That's how we will be eating and telling tales, discussing till some of us who were little then will fall asleep on top groundnut. Once you sleep, you done belle full. The rull is that, nothing is reserved for anyone unless the leftover.

Chai good old days.

Rest in peace DAD. I'm grown now but I still miss you.

God please, bless my mum with long life and good health. She's my everything now. Provide for me so I can always take good care of her.

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING.
Baba see how u take remind me of the good old days, who dash us TV, our best bet na novels of all kinds both the one school recommend and the one they didn't.

Things have really fallen apart big time.

Wow!

Nice to see someone like me here.

I also grew up listening to BBC and VoA with my Dad.

We had TV, but I listened to the radio more.

Now I have an internet radio app on my phone and still listen to BBC.

Rest on, Dad. I miss you loads!
Bad you! Lol. I miss my dad too and often find myself having full blown conversations with him in my half sleep.

I do CSpan too these days, radio and not telly. Do you like listen all night like I do?

Most people talking here are mostly adults with kids, now you're saying u were all in your living rooms growing up, bonding etc. The kids that we have these days won't bond unless they're told to do so. If their parents grew up bonding with their siblings while growing up, what changed? One thing I believe is most of the irregularities we see today are due to the parents we have these days. Most of them were trained but didn't adhere to such training.
Or they just forgot to train their own children in the way they were trained.

I hardly ever do BBC World during the day as I get it on telly 24/7, plus Aljazeera and RT and CNBC and Bloomberg.

BBC Radio 4 is my go to during the day as it does a lot of culture that interests me. I'm that person walking down the road with it in my ears if I'm not listening to a book.

You have a point.
The Globalists who are pushing the NWO down our throats are hell bent on destroying the Family Unit. And God our Creator so much value the family unit.
It is a subtle fight against the Creator and every standards/norms He gave to us via the Holy Bible and our conscience.
